What’s interesting in the news today?

Open Thread, what’ve ya’ got?

Here’s a few to start.

Remember folks, this is the same people charged with enforcing the border. If the new amnesty/immigration plan goes thru, DHS will decide when the border is secure. This is their idea of secure. But of course, it’s not.

From CNSNews

“The men and women charged with enforcing federal  immigration law are being prohibited from doing so by the Obama  administration, according to Chris Crane, president of the union that  represents officers and agents employed by the Department of Homeland  Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

“I think most Americans assume that ICE agents and officers are  empowered by the government to enforce the law,” Crane said on Wednesday  at Senate Judiciary Committee meeting on immigration reform. “Nothing  could be further from the truth.”

““If an alien is arrested by local police and placed in jail, again,  ICE agents may not arrest them for illegal entry or VISA overstay,”  Crane said. “New policies require that illegal aliens have a felony  arrest or conviction or be convicted of three or more misdemeanors.”

““ICE is crumbling from within,” Crane said. “Morale is at an all time  low as criminal aliens are released to the streets and ICE instead  takes disciplinary actions against its own officers for making lawful  arrests.”

I find this one odd . Notice he’s not worried about porn and all the other garbage out there. He’s only concerned because he was personally mocked. Free speech and press is OK, as long as you leave them alone. Don’t get me wrong, I agree with him that it’s vulgar. But why limit it to just stuff that photoshops porn? Why not go after all of it?

CONTENT WARNING!!!! Adult subject matter!!!!

From FoxNews

“A Georgia state lawmaker with an unconventional grasp of the First Amendment  is backing a bill that would make lewd photoshopping a crime punishable by a  $1,000 fine.

Rep. Earnest Smith pointed, as  proof of the problem, to a picture of his head that was recently edited  onto a pornstar’s body. That image was created by a blogger who used the image  to mock Smith.

The Augusta-based legislator said he was not worried the bill would step on  First Amendment rights.”

Sorry kids. I know it’s Spring Break and all, but the President needs you at school. It’s for the good of the country photo-op.

From TheWashingtonExaminer

“President Obama, following his call for preschool for “every child in America,” will visit a pre-kindergarten class at College Heights Early Childhood Learning Center in Decatur, Georgia, this afternoon.

Ironically, the students are on spring break this week, according to the school’s website. But parents have been invited to bring their kids to school today for the president’s visit, according to a letter to parents obtained by CNN.

Ego and props, nothing more. 🙄

The media couldn’t find much to say about the content of Rubio’s State of the Union Rebuttal I guess. (Even Fox played along with the stupidity) Why else would they focus on something so silly?

From HotAir

“Say thanks to Jeff Poor and the Daily Caller for enduring the Ludovico-ish process needed to tally these numbers. The “200 times” figure comes with an asterisk: Turns out Rachel Maddow alone accounted for more than half the replays by putting the clip of Rubio reaching for the water on a loop, tucked into a corner of the screen, for 13 minutes while she and Steve Kornacki were hashing out the particulars of his speech. (Seeing is believing.) Jon Stewart once chided her and MSNBC for beating the “teabagger” joke into the ground, but in hindsight he should be glad she never resorted to a push-button morning-zoo-style soundboard for the T-word. She’s always been touted as a more civil, substantive alternative to Olbermann, and in fairness this episode bears that out. If Olby were still on the air, he would have run the clip for the full hour.”

“What’s interesting about the Maddow segment is that she actually does engage with the specifics of Rubio’s speech yet still felt obliged to have the water clip running over and over onscreen, which ends up distracting from the commentary. But then, why limit yourself to convincing the viewer with your argument when you can condition them to view Rubio as a ridiculous figure with visual cues too? She might as well have skipped the clip and simply delivered her commentary over a flashing banner, “DO NOT TAKE MARCO RUBIO SERIOUSLY.””

Pathetic.

And again, about that nomination………

From HotAir

“He was one vote short. Republicans Cochran, Collins, and Johanns had all already committed to voting yes so the only mystery was whether Reid could find two more GOPers to cross the aisle. He found one: As expected, Murkowski ended up erring on the side of bipartisanship. Orrin Hatch voted present, which may or may not be his way of signaling that he’ll vote for Hagel when they try this again in a few weeks but not right now. But wait — what about Rand Paul? If ever there was a SecDef nominee whom the Ron Paul paleocon fan base could sort of dig, it’s a guy known for lamenting the “Israel lobby” and opposing Iran sanctions.”

“Philip Klein, tongue in cheek, calls him today’s neocon hero. Paul’s going to catch endless crap for this from his dad’s supporters so I assume he’s a soft “no” on Hagel, not a hard “no” like Ted Cruz, and will vote yes next time once Hagel/the White House fulfills whatever condition he’s set for switching. That would be in keeping with his M.O. lately in trying to triangulate between mainstream righties and Paulworld. He’ll vote for Hagel, but only after he’s voted against him. We’ll see.”

Update: As expected, Rand’s got some triangulatin’ to do:

That explanation wasn’t good enough for Justin Raimondo, editorial director of Antiwar.com and a strong supporter of Ron Paul. “It’s time for libertarians to treat Rand Paul like the turncoat he is: boycott,” Raimondo tweeted. “No $$, no support, & start calling him Paul the Lesser.”…

🙄

  1. OK, I believe I posted this but it did not show up lets try this again.

Plans for prom barring gays rocks Ind. community

    http://xfinity.comcast.net/articles/news-general/20130215/US.Indiana.Anti.Gay.Prom/

I do not believe they should barred people who gay from the prom, but what concern me is how the GLBT Community are demanding the teacher to be fire and how they attacked Sullivan First Christian Church fax machine and website with hate mail and pornographic messages. You also see that the Southern Poverty Law Center had no comment on the attack on the teacher and Sullivan First Christian Church

  3. I missed both the state of the union and the rebuttal speeches the other night (dog show! I have my priorities).

But in the replay of the infamous “water sip,” it did strike me that they should have at least placed the water next to him and level so he wouldn’t have had to do that weird, awkward reach down, all the time staring into the camera. It actually was kind of funny.

Frankly, I doubt it had a big viewership and if anything in politics can blow over, this incident surely will. Sigh.

It’s still too early in my mind to say whether Rubio will make a good presidential contender in ’16. But that will be decided by a lot weightier matters than this. Sheesh.

    Amusing ourselves to death, indeed.

Do not be shocked in then near future that companies will start asking people what is their views on the GLBT Community because of fear of being attack, over the persons comments on his facebook page, or given money to protect marriage, or comment made in a church setting, or on line somewhere.

  5. The Obama administration’s Equal Employment Opportunity Commission says it should be a federal crime to refuse to hire ex-convicts — and threatens to sue businesses that don’t employ criminals.

In April the EEOC unveiled its “Enforcement Guidance on the Consideration of Arrest and Conviction Records,” which declares that “criminal record exclusions have a disparate impact based on race and national origin.”

The impetus for this “guidance” is that black men are nearly seven times more likely than white men to serve time in prison, and therefore refusals to hire convicts disproportionally impact blacks, according to a Wall Street Journal opinion piece by James Bovard, a libertarian author and lecturer whose books include “Freedom in Chains: The Rise of the State and the Demise of the Citizen.”

LOL — I’m a couple of years removed from draft age, but being a lady, love the compliment! 🙂 If there is a draft, and it is hard to fathom that Rangel’s legislation will go through, but if there is one then all people who are of an eligible age should sign up – that’s equal treatment.

I observe that you seem to like to gay the thread. The only response I have is that LGBT community activists are doing exactly the same thing that conservative Christian activists have done for years. It is the reverse of what was done. Hot kitchen, isn’t it?

The guidance counselor in Indiana proposed to have a Prom that excluded some kids. While I don’t think she should be greeted with hate mail or job threats — I’d wish that LGBT community could demonstrate tolerance and love in the face of such people as the guidance counselor, it is also hard for me to gin up sympathy for her.

    For all

you know I was tempted yesterday to answer the q’s on the main thread on how you met your significant other — I didn’t mostly because I have no confidence that any of you would have anything to say other than disdain. That’s what I’ve learned over the years on WMB.

  7. Sorry Christian’s did not ask for people who gay to be fired. What is happen is the GLBT Commuinities are bullies that desire to force the values onto people. If you object, you are then targeted by the bullies…

You did not read the story because she was not guidance counselor she was a special ed teacher.. An it was in respond of the Community force themselves on to the school.

  8. What is happen is action and reaction in regard to the Gay Right Issue…

    Action

“David Springer, the principal of Sullivan High, said talk of the “traditional” prom began in January after a student began circulating a petition demanding that gays be allowed to participate in the grand march at Sullivan’s April 27 prom. The grand march is when couples are presented at the dance.”

    Reaction

“A quiet Indiana community known for its parks and corn festival has become the latest setting for the debate over gay rights and bullying after several area residents, including some high schoolers, proposed holding a non-school sanctioned “traditional” prom that would ban gay students.”

    Action

“Dale Wise, the church’s senior minister at Sullivan First Christian Church, said his church turned off its fax machine and took its website offline Tuesday because both were the target of hate mail and pornographic messages.”
“Neither Medley nor Northeast officials returned calls seeking comment. The district issued a statement earlier this week saying Medley was “expressing her First Amendment rights” to free speech and that “the views expressed are not the views of the Northeast School Corporation and/or the Board of Education.”
Northeast’s superintendent, Mark A. Baker, said in another statement issued Thursday that he “cannot emphasize enough the extent to which we are dismayed and disappointed with the statements made by a school employee.”

Reaction – A teacher job now is in trouble.

  9. Right, sorry Roy. A special ed teacher who doesn’t teach at Sullivan which pre Mell would have quietl had an inclusive prom. But since the special ed teacher started the campaign for tatally straight prom, we reall should balme teh gays for raising it … I get it. If the gays did not exist well, it would all be just dandy … its their fault she campaigned to exclude them. If only those libs weren’t so divisive…

  12. Thanks Karen – that was interesting take on it. I appreciate the consistency of the libertarians on social issues — they want gov’t out, period full stop.

    Roy

“People” would probably have left it alone as gay students had attended the dance in prior years. The special ed teacher from another school just had to stick her nose in and stir the pot. That’s divisive — intentionally so. Good thing that she follows Jesus’ example by associating with the sinners … oh, wait. Nevermind.
