News/Politics 1-19-13

Lately all the news, especially where politics is concerned, seems to be bad news. After all, if it bleeds, it leads, or so they say. I’m sure you’ll agree, it does get tiring sometimes. I think I should spend a little more time on good news for a change. I’ll try to remember to include more going forward as well. Today I’m just going with nothing but good news stories. Feel free to share your own too, or whatever else you find interesting.

🙂

And if you want some nice ones to lead off with, you can’t go wrong with puppies. I mean who doesn’t love puppies?

If it barks, it leads.

First, a loyal dog.

From TheDailyMail

“A heartbroken dog whose owner died two months ago is missing her so much he is attending services at the Italian church where her funeral was held patiently waiting for her to return.

Loyal Tommy, a seven-year-old German Shepherd, belonged to Maria Margherita Lochi, 57, and had been her faithful companion after she adopted him when she found him abandoned in fields close to her home.”

“Following her death at San Donaci near Brindisi, a funeral service was held at which Tommy joined mourners and since then he has been a regular at the church arriving on time when the bells ring out to mark the start of services.”

Then next we have a fun one for anyone who likes “Where’s Waldo?” Or if you’re British, 🙄 “Where’s Wally?”

Finding Momo, via TheDailyMail as well.

“Spot the dog is the challenge being laid down  by the pet owner behind these Where’s Wally-style photographs.

Andrew Knapp is hoping eagle-eyed viewers  will have lots of fun finding Momo – his black and white border collie concealed  within the images.

The graphic designer originally produced the  series of pictures as a gift for his  nieces and nephews.”

This one is pretty cool.  🙂

From DailyGood.org

“He’s a world record holding sprinter from South Africa. She’s a spunky 5-year-old from Essex, England. In an inspiring series of images that have recently gone viral, the two strangers, united only by a stubborn refusal to let double amputations stop them, race each other in a friendly bionic foot race.

Oscar “Blade Runner” Pistorious, 25, was just 11 months old when doctors discovered he had no fibulas, requiring below-the-knee amputations of both his legs. Ellie May Challis lost both her hands and legs at 16 months, after contracting a severe case of meningitis.

Although Ellie was originally fitted with standard prosthetics, the toddler found them difficult to walk with. More sophisticated carbon fiber legs — the kind worn by Pistorious — were expensive, but Ellie’s community rallied behind her, raising the $15,000 needed for the replacements. In 2009, the 5-year-old became the youngest person ever to be fitted with carbon fiber prostheses.

This is from TheTelegraph

“When 11-year-old Cade Scott threw his message in a bottle into the North Sea he had no idea what kind of 17 month travail his postcard would go on.

Cade’s bottle ended up finding dry land just in time for Christmas 2012 – all the way down in Australia.

The Sunderland schoolboy wrote a short message on a Dr Who postcard in August 2011 saying: “I love Dr Who. If found, please send back with your name and address and how old you are. Cade.””

How cool is that? 🙂

And one more, from NBCNews

“Airport cleaner turns in lost iPad with $13,000 in case, gives away reward.”

  1. AJ- I like the good news, for once. Especially since everything this weekend seems to center on the coronation, I mean, inauguration. I don’t remember, has the media ever made such a big deal about a second inauguration before?

Looking for Momo is a challenge in two of the picures. I finally found him in the picture of the van with a snowy background. It took a lot longer finding him in the pile of trash bags. What a great idea this guy had in helping his nieces and nephews exercise their brains!

  2. The dog story is quite poignant, I spotted that the other day and still need to find time to post it on the blog at work.

AJ’s right about the political news, though. The president’s new take-no-prisoners I’m-the-boss-over-you tone has made me completely turn off and tune out for now. 😦 Wake me when his term is over.

  3. I don’t trust the Algerians on the killing of the terrorists and hostages in this thing. I suspect they also had something to hide and killed all the evidence.
I don’t trust any of the governments over there.
    Not one.
Every operation, military and civilian should have trained protection.
Former US military men could make good money protecting chemical plants.
A dozen well armed and trained men could have held off the Benghazi attack.
No, you can’t trust locals to do it.

  4. I must be really really smart! I can see a few problems coming down the road for people on the bottom rungs of the job ladder. This year is the beginning of ObamaCare. I know, it really begins next year but this year is when it will be decided who will get ObamaCare paid for by businesses and who will get it paid for by the government.

People on the bottom rungs of the job ladder will get less than 30 hours a week of paid time. 30 hours is the cut-off for company paid healthcare. Those workers who get less than 30 hours will have to get health care paid for by the government.

Will WalMart keep many above 30 hours? How many people will be able to live on less than 30 hours? $7.25, the federal minimum wage, for 29 hours is $210.25. $210.25 for 4 weeks is $841. That works out to $10,933 for a year!

And that is before taxes!! $10,933

This proves that Democrats are evil and stupid, and Obama is their leader.

    I know, “It’s all Bush’s fault!”

  5. PerterL. I’ve heard that rumor about every president since Reagan. People will say they are going to declare martial law or do away with the term limits and become a dictator. When it finally happens it will be our fault for giving them the idea. Also every president since Roosevelt and a few before him has been proven to be the anti-Christ.

  6. kbells — I was going to say the same thing — the left said that about Reagan and Bush Jr. and the right will say that about Obama but thats par for the course in American politics. Originally written in 1964, The Paranoid Style of American Politics by Richard Hofstadler is still relevant today.

This essay fits people like Alex Jones to a tee; stricter licensing and information sharing (not much different than driver’s licenses) does not lead to black helicopters and FEMA concentration camps.

  7. Chas — I don’t think the Algerians have anything to hide or more accurately I won’t think they have anything to hide unless there’s evidence as opposed to supposition or suspicion. Instead, the Algerians have far less concern for “collateral damage” than we do. This isn’t an exclusive Arab or Muslim trait, the Russians exhibited the same lack of concern in the Beslan school hostage situation and the Moscow theatre hostage situation. The desire not to be insulted or bested by any terrorist group is more important than civilian lives. They rather kill everyone than admit they have a problem — these societies still contain remnants of a traditional honour based society.

The West has at least progressed to think about civilian lives to a certain extent but this is probably due more to domestic democratic concern than better moral principles of their leadership. The lives of Pakistanis receive little consideration when predator drones are used to hunt down Taliban/al-queda in the frontier regions. Collateral damage is very common here but the desire to defeat terrorists overwhelms any concern for civilians in this theater of war. This isn’t racism as some leftist claim but rather instinctive political calculation that voting electorate care more for domestic safety and troop causalities than the possibility of civilian causalities elsewhere especially when the news media is rather mute on real foreign news. (The Kardashians qualify as foreign content on some networks — they are Armenian)
