  1. I’ve been awake…just otherwise occupied. College boyfriend sent me a FB message this morning about my father teaching him to shoot. They went somewhere and fired at old appliances. He said he resisted the urge to ask my dad if they could mount the washing machine over the fireplace. He also said my dad was quite the jokester that day. They had been shooting squirrel shot until the last round when Daddy put 00 buck shot in the gun. I had to reply that I thought it was about more than my dad being a jokester. It may have been an alpha male sort of thing. I DO think my dad would have found it hysterical if College Boy had asked about mounting the washing machine though.

I love it when people share their stories about my father. He had the dryest sense of humor and a lot of people missed out on just how funny he was.

  2. Mumsee and others when you show up. I was fixing breakfast for the Baby Girl this morning and was thinking about nutrition. Suddenly I remembered speaking last week with a man who runs and alternative school. He has been in education for 30+ years and I asked him why we were seeing so much more autism these days than we used to. He said it was a two fold answer. First a lot of autistic children were diagnosed with something else years ago and that he really felt a lot of it had to do with the chemicals, steroids, and preservatives in our food. He said when he was a young teacher there was an aid at the school whose husband left her and their autistic child. A lot of people in the community helped her out by sharing their wild game and garden produce with her. As time went by her son became more manageable. The man I talked to said he has seen this over and over in the last 30 years.

Perhaps Mumsee is on to something Up There On The Prairie?

  3. Monday morning metal…Whooo! that was quite a jolt!

Kim (4), I have a lot to say about that subject, but no time to discuss it right now. I’ll be back later.

On the subject of autism and other special needs, though, I should briefly mention right now that the Pro-Active Development Interview Series that was held online a couple weeks ago has replays of their sessions available through midnight tonight (Eastern time). The first session, with Kari Kindem, outlined dietary and homeopathic remedies that reportedly can help with healing in autism. Here’s a link to all the sessions and recordings that were in this interview series.

  4. kathleena, I don’t know which version of Windows I have, it came with the computer, but I have a problem with it. I can’t open links on it.
i.e. If I get an e-mail with an atttachment, I can’t open it.
I took it to the computer guru who spent an hour and a half with Microsoft on the phone. Still doesn’t work. As a fix, he installed Chrome which gives the same internet page as Window. I get all my attachments through Chrome.
Idon’t especially like it, but it works.

  5. Kathaleena, those are two different categories. Windows XP is a very (in terms of electronics) old operating system—what makes your computer go, regardless of whether you use the internet. Google Chrome is the “doorway,” so to speak, of how you get on the internet. Internet *Explorer* is its counterpart, which many folks dislike (susceptible to viruses, crashes often, etc.).

If you’re using IE to get on the internet, I second the recommendation to switch to Chrome or a similar option like Firefox. Both of these are fast, but Chrome takes less memory to run.

  6. Thanks, Chas. We are having problems with slowness and freezing of the computer. I did just see a message pop up that our version of XP has to be upgraded or we should go to Chrome. I am not sure if that is ‘official’ or an advertisement type thing, though. I guess we will have to bite the bullet and make the change. It just takes more time at the beginning and I hate to take the time to do it.

  7. Monday Morning Metal (6 arrows), now there’s a new category for us!

OK, gotta get the animals fed & me ready for the inevitable return to work.

  8. Kathleena,

I use IE mostly. But we have found certain things just run better on Chrome. Webkinz being one of them. It’s much faster and displays the graphics better too. We also use Firefox, again, because it’s faster, for school. IE has more bugs to it. It seems like every couple weeks we get the dreaded “Internet Explorer has stopped working” message. Within a few days there’s a fix, and it starts all over again. That can be very annoying. If you’re unhappy with IE, I’d recommend either Chrome or Firefox.

  9. For those of you who enjoyed the August Burns Red video, I have another. Donna will remember it from years past. It’s still my favorite version of this song.

Carol of the Bells, with Christmas lights too!

If this doesn’t wake you up, you’re probably in a coma and should seek medical care.

  10. Good Morning!
Oh my word…I must be old or something…I find two of those videos very annoying…I was invited to a Women’s Christmas Tea last week and that was the music they were playing…really???? Ugh…you couldn’t even hear one another talk and that annoying music just scrambles my brain!
Now Kay’s video is more to my liking…. 🙂

  11. My husband didn’t want to use google Chrome for what sounded to me like a very good reason: Google already tracks too much of our internet use! We use firefox and have been happy with it.

  12. Cheryl, Google’s privacy issues are definitely a problem for a lot of people. I was trying to keep my answer above pretty simple. Firefox’s other issue is that it is a memory space hog, so sometimes webpages run more slowly on a older/smaller system. My netbook is an XP and FF got too slow about a month ago and had to switch, partly for Grace’s therapy needs.

  13. Internet Browsers:

If I’m using an old operating system like XP, I’m going to use Chrome- it’s just faster. If I’ve got a current operating system and a decent PC, I’m going to use Internet Explorer. Despite all the naysaying, IE 8 and IE9 are the most stable browsers out there, by far, bar none.

    Caveat: DON’T. USE. TOOLBARS!

If you use toolbars throw all I said out the window.

I won’t use a toolbar just because they gunk up the works no matter what browser you are using. And, no matter what toolbard you’re using, they still gunk up the works.

If someone installs one here at work, the first thing I do is uninstall them, then I go to the person who did it, and slap ’em with a wet noodle.

  14. Our town where we go to church is a town of about 1300 people. They claim that seventy eight percent of the high school students claim to drink alcohol at least once per week. Some begin their drug and alcohol use at age 8.

  15. Tonight, the American Heritage Girls troop I run is going to sing Christmas carols at a nearby retirement home. We sing in their greatest care section, including the Alzheimer’s unit. Afterward, we have our annual Christmas party at the church.

Prayers for things to go well. All the girls to be safe. Everything to run well, and me not to get too stressed. It is supposed to be fun, but it doesn’t always feel that way to the person running it until it’s all over!! 🙂

  17. JoeB, glad you had safe travels and are together with your wife again.

Kim, I was going to remark on the autism/nutritional/environmental connection you mentioned, but I’m absolutely beat tonight. Maybe another day (or week).

    Good night, everyone.
