  1. AJ, my prayers go to you and yours, as you are close to the epicenter of this dangerous storm. Take care.

Just now in a coastal town south of Boston, winds are averaging 30-to 40 with occasional gusts up to 55. I expect a power outage anytime, though with a good fireplace and temperatures about 60, we should weather this well. My only serious concern is a few large oak trees.

  2. Part of our little town here in northeastern Connecticut has already lost power, due to a tree falling on power lines. We’re in the part of town that still has power – for now.

  4. KBells, they have never left the post.

The two former seals in Benghazi didn’t have to go to the compound either. But they saw a duty, and did it.
In Washington, they were worried about something else.

  5. At 4:15 we were on the phone with a vendor who’d been waiting days to have a phone conference with us with a web demo of some software we’re evaluating. The salesman doing the presentation is in coastal Massachusetts, south of Boston. His voice suddenly disappeared in mid-sentence. His colleagues on the line from other locations got a text message from him letting us all know he’d lost power. So even 1000 miles inland we’re starting to feel the effects.

  6. Last I heard, daughter was doing just fine with her friends. They had lost power early in the day but it was back. I suggested her uncles run over and rescue her (they are here in Idaho) but they suggested her brother could get there more quickly. He is a wizzo on an F15 so qualified to fly one. I presume he has already been there and back and all are safe and sound. After all, if we are willing to fly everybody to Hawaii for Christmas, we must be willing for a brother to go rescue his sister.

  7. Wow, that sounds like some crazy storm.

I spent the day working on a story about a woman who died in the sinking of the HMS Bounty, a tall ship that’s been no stranger to the west coast as it participated in our tall ship festivals and was often used for filming (Pirates of the Caribbean, etc.) — it was actually built as a replica to be used in the 1962 film Mutiny on the Bounty.

The woman who died (14 of the 16 crew members were saved when the ship went down off the coast of NC) was a usc grad (currently 42 years old), a former Miss Teen Alaska — and she’d lived in one of our beach cities for a number of years before joining the Bounty crew in May. 😦

Stay safe everyone — I haven’t heard back from my friends in NY, they’re on a farm an hour or two north of the city.

Hope NJL is OK. New Jersey’s really getting hammered from the looks of it.

  9. Since the “30” threads aren’t up yet, I presume AJ is without power.
    I hope that’s all that’s all thet’s wrong.

Those who are in touch with NJL, let us know as soon as you find out.
Karen is north of the biggest part and not near water. Probably power outtage.
We, of course, are OK, not even a power loss, which is strange in this part of NC.
We’re still under wind advisory, but it’w quiet now.

37 degrees with heavy clouds, that’s all.

  10. It is difficult to watch the news this morning and see what people are going through in the hard hit areas. At least so far there have not been such a large number of deaths as there could have been, but I know the numbers will rise as time goes by.

A two year old boy at Cribs to Crayons daycare center in this area was playing in the yard and a tree limb fell and hit him in the head. He has brain swelling and is fighting for his life. Prayers for him and his family.

Atlanta is at 42 degrees with 16 mph winds. It is suppose to be in the 30s tomorrow morning. Yesterday we turned on the heat for the first time this year. I decided it was time when it was down to 59 degrees in our house.

  11. Morning all,

Feeling lucky in the DC area, at least so far it is looking like we’re ok in this area and the weather folks are saying that the worst has definitely passed.

New York and New Jersey though, wow. Keeping them and the rest of the northeast and the mountain areas in my thoughts.

  12. My sister in Maryland (Calvert County) reported yesterday around 5:15 pm that their power had gone out in the early afternoon, but had come back on around 4:15 and stayed on with no flickering.

She also reported that their area (PAX River) had received more rainfall than other areas of Southern MD and Virginia, a total of 4.25 inches at that point, with predicted levels of 5-10 inches, and more rain expected overnight.

They just moved to Maryland and have lots of furniture and boxes in their basement (my sister and her husband and four children moved from a larger house to a smaller one), and are hoping flooding doesn’t get to be a problem. They are in a low-lying area, though, so continued prayers for them are most appreciated.

  13. All’s good in California. 😉

Seriously, though, what a storm. 😦 … I’m waiting still to hear from my friends in NY, but the assumption is that there are sufficiently widespread power outages to explain any silence.

That’s the first thing I noticed here, too — no AJ.

CB, glad all is well, you too LSchaffer.

  14. Ah, got an email from my NY friends (they’re on a farm north of Poughkeepsie) and all’s well there — they seem to have been out of the path of the storm and didn’t lose power, which she says is unusual as they often go dark during these events.

I have NJL’s email but my guess is she’s without power and likely wouldn’t get it. But I’ll try go look it up and send on a note anyway.

  15. To add a little lightheartedness to the discussion…I texted my sister in D.C. repeatedly, to check on her…found out that this is the week they are visiting the Mediterranean. Thought that was next month…I guess they’re ok, then…

Praying for all the East Coasters.

People in Boone and other places in NC mountains are happy because they are opening the skiing season early. This is big for them.

  17. Yup, I’m here. So grateful we didn’t lose power. Last year at this time we had that freak October snow storm that knocked out our power for 5 days, & our internet for 10 days.

Prayers for those suffering because of this storm.

  18. Karen, like you, we are most grateful for not having lost power in a town where many did lose it. During the last storm we lost it for eight days.
