Good morning!
This is the daily thread. What would you like to talk about?
Quote of the day
“The highest gift and favor of God is a pious, kind, godly, and domestic wife, with whom thou mayest live peaceably, and to whom thou mayest intrust all thy possessions, yea, thy body and thy life.”
Martin Luther
The sun has “riz” and it is a new day. I am still a little overwhelmed with all the technology I have at my fingertips as work. This company takes continueing education seriously and I am getting a brand spanking new agent today that I can train. I am sort of liking that.
I keep reminding myself that life is good. It’s not always great, but it is always good.

Youngest GD, Jennifer, called last night. She was really excited. Elvera says “Jennifer was ‘wound up'”.
Jennifer says she is pregnant.
Well, she hasn’t been to the doctor yet. And she expects the baby to be born in May.
Of the three, Jenn was/is the impetuous one. Becky didn’t announce until she was about three months along.

Is Jennifer the baby? Do her two older sisters already have children? It time for her to catch up and get a little attention for herself. What she doesn’t realize is that this will be the LAST time in her life she will be the center of attention. 😉

Thanks for the quote, AJ. Those qualities in a wife are good for me to focus on: Am I pious, kind, godly, domestic, peaceable? [cringe]
Excellent food for thought as I start the day. Thank you. Have a blessed day, everyone. 🙂

Kim,
Here’s a tip for you. If you know any folks who bowl in a league, you could ask them if they have any free game passes you could have. In our league they give them out like candy and most people never use them all. They are transferrable. Usually each one is good for three games. If you could get your hands a few, you could take BG and friends for bowling for just the cost of shoes and snacks.

Jenn is the baby, 26. But she has been married two years. Becky, the oldest (30) has been married several years and has three. She says that’s all. Becky is the one with the blog.
Mary is a year older than Jenn, but just got married last June.
That little blob of whoever is in Jennifer has already been prayed for.
It makes us more sad to think of some situations like those Mumsee gets, where nobody ever cared.

Chas – I know exactly what you mean. When our granddaughter was first born, I would look at her and think how terribly sad it is that there are other babies just as precious as her that were being neglected or abused.

Good morning all, my youngest daughter now has a boyfriend. Well if you can call it that with group dating restricitions, etc. She is over the moon as she has had a crush on this kid since she was 12. Ah infatuation, it has affected her moods, her hearing and her appetite.
I was thinking of this because our church’s marriage retreat is this weekend and the blurb talked about returning to romance and reigniting the fire, blah, blah, blah. Here is a QoD: Would you want to live in a perpetual state of being in love? Why or why not?

Pay attention. Don’t harass. It’s not PC to say, but it happens both ways. In my last job before I retired, I was directed to take one of those modules. Then my supervisor met with me and said, “Steve, this is very imporant. If you ever feel harassed, let me know. And if you don’t feel comfortable speaking to me, speak to X [Head of Department].” She looked into my eyes with a very sincere expression.
The trouble was that she was harassing me at the time. I don’t know if “sexual harassment” is quite the right term, as she wasn’t lusting after my tired old body, so perhaps “gender harassment” would be a better expression to use. And the problem with reporting it to the department head was that she was complicit in the same harassment (and perhaps the main instigator). Said department head is now a very high administrator in the organization. I thought that perhaps I was being unfair. I happened to chat recently with a very experienced and well-resected employee and asked about X. He replied with a scowl, “Oh, you mean the ‘Wicked Witch of the West?’ She’s the same as ever.” So I still continue to think bitter thoughts, but there’s no point in dwelling on it.

cbadwjh, Being in Love is far different that being infatuated or being passionate with your husband or wife. Love is an action, not a feeling. Classic point: “For God so Loved…” As far as the household texts in the NT are concerned, the husband is commanded to Love his wife. The Greek imperative tense is used in both Ephesians and Colossians. When a Christian man loves his wife the way Christ loves the church, there is more peace and harmony in the home. That is not to say that there will be a fairy tale happy every after marriage, it will just mean that if the husband is following the Lord, it is more likely that the marriage will survive the pitfalls of life.

Chas: Random, what will you do when you have to preach a funeral? .
First, I don’t “Preach.” Mostly I listen and try to make sure that everyone listens to the quiet people in the group. We are sort of like inverted Quakers.
Secondly, I am the oldest in the group. So I am probably the first in the group who will die. Both my wife and I detest funerals, and we have added to our wills that we want to be cremated and have no service. But as for me, I don’t care. They can bury me in our five acres of woods, or throw my carcass out for the coyotes, or let the chickens peck at it. If my daughter wants to hold a service, I am not going to care, am I?
My neighbor, who is very devout, 1/4 Sioux Indian, assured me that the pastor of his ELCA Lutheran Church even delivers sermons for the atheists who belong to their church and would be glad to do the same for me. Then he had the grace to chuckle and say, “Well, I guess you won’t really care, will you.”
Hate to tell everybody, this, but “There’s no there, there.”

Revelation 8
Seventh Seal: Prelude to the Seven Trumpets
8 When He opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. 2 And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and to them were given seven trumpets. 3 Then another angel, having a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne. 4 And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, ascended before God from the angel’s hand. 5 Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and threw it to the earth. And there were noises, thunderings, lightnings, and an earthquake.
6 So the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound.
First Trumpet: Vegetation Struck
7 The first angel sounded: And hail and fire followed, mingled with blood, and they were thrown to the earth. And a third of the trees were burned up, and all green grass was burned up.

I have a (physically) easier assignment today, covering the adoption of a kitten who had somehow stowed away in a shipping container from China, landing in L.A. It took the shelter some time to make kitteh would be OK, some rehab time, but now she’s ready for a home — more than 80 people signed up to adopt her, she’s going to a family who lives in one of our local beach cities.
I don’t think there are any steel ladders or hatches involved in this story so I am happy enough with that.

This morning I read an interesting article by theologian Roger Olson. He begins by talking about the recently deceased “Rev. Moon” who was so popular back in the ’70s, then goes on to point out that the Moonies are only one of the many new religions/cults that are gaining a following in America today, and he asks why this is. Olson is not a Calvinist, which might not sit well with some of you, and he is not as conservative as I would like, but this is a good read.
Excerpts:
America has become a mission field. “Rev. Moon” was one of the first missionaries from another culture to us. Many have followed in his footsteps. It’s not that we’re not religious; we have many religions and are, like the ancient Romans, increasingly open to anything and everything. It doesn’t have to make sense or be rooted in any great tradition of belief. If it feels good, adopt it. Add it to the pantheon of new gods and religions.
The question it raises is where has traditional Christianity gone wrong that so many odd religions could come here, be accepted and gain a foothold? (The Unification Church owns a major daily newspaper in a major American city.) Of course, many “new religions” have been born here as well.
The answer is obvious. Traditional Christianity has failed. Failed to be so attractive (and by that I don’t mean entertaining) that new religions have no space to gain a foothold. Traditional Christianity has failed to be so reasonable that irrational religions have no ground to stand on. Traditional Christianity has failed to be so unified (I don’t mean institutionally, but spiritually) that diverse religions can’t find a crack to wedge into.
…
In my humble opinion, for what it’s worth, the plurality of novel religious messiahs and movements, many of them totally lacking in anything resembling truth, beauty and goodness, flourishing in America is evidence of a failure of traditional, orthodox Christianity–Catholic and Protestant. We have become captivated by our own culture, consumerism. We have watered down the gospel to powerless “spirituality” or turned it into an ideology. We have fought with each other so vehemently, demonizing each other, that outsiders want nothing to do with us or or our Christianity.
…
The thing most lacking in contemporary American Christianity is any sense of the importance of truth–truth in the classical sense of what is revealed as real and is a matter of life and death. It’s the only thing that will begin to inoculate Christians against cults and new religions and secular ideologies.

Drivesguy, Yes love is an action that most married couples settle into. My answer to the question would be, no, I don’t want to live in a constant state of infatuation or “being in love.” I call that phase of life God’s great cosmic joke. It gets us married, but then real loving begins. CS Lewis has some great stuff on this. I’ll have to find the quote and give it to The Real.
