On this day in 1453 France defeated England at Castillon, France, which ended the 100 Years’ War.

In 1867 Harvard School of Dental Medicine was established in Boston, MA. It was the first dental school in the U.S. 

In 1941 the longest hitting streak in baseball history ended when the Cleveland Indians pitchers held New York Yankee Joe DiMaggio hitless for the first time in 57 games. 

In 1945 U.S. President Truman, Soviet leader Josef Stalin and British Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill began meeting at Potsdam in the final Allied summit of World War II. 

And in 1997, after 117 years, the Woolworth Corp. closed its last 400 stores.

On this day in 1790 the District of Columbia, or Washington, DC, was established as the permanent seat of the United States Government. 

In 1845 the New York Yacht Club hosted the first American boating regatta. 

In 1950 the largest crowd ever gathered in sporting history amassed. The total was 199,854. They watched Uruguay defeat Brazil in the World Cup soccer finals in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. 

In 1964 Little League Baseball Incorporated was granted a Federal Charter unanimously by the United States Senate and House of Representatives. 

And in 1985 the All-Star Game, televised on NBC-TV, was the first program broadcast in stereo by a TV network

In 1798 the U.S. Congress passed the Sedition Act. The act made it a federal crime to write, publish, or utter false or malicious statements about the U.S. government.

In 1868 Alvin J. Fellows patented the tape measure.  

In 1933 all German political parties except the Nazi Party were outlawed. 

And in 1946 Dr. Benjamin Spock’s “The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care” was first published.

On this day in 1798 the U.S. Marine Corps was formally re-established by “An Act for Establishing a Marine Corps” passed by the U.S. Congress.

In 1864 Confederate forces led by Gen. Jubal Early began an invasion of Washington, DC. They turned back the next day. 

In 1972 U.S. forces broke the 95-day siege at An Loc in Vietnam. 

And in 1998 U.S. Air Force Lt. Michael Blassie, a casualty of the Vietnam War, was laid to rest near his Missouri home. He had been positively identified from his remains that had been enshrined in the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington, VA.
