On this day in 1606 Guy Fawkes was executed after being convicted for his role in the “Gunpowder Plot” against the English Parliament and King James I. 

In 1865 the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives. The amendment abolished slavery in the United States. It’s also the day General Robert E. Lee was named general-in-chief of the Confederate armies.  

In 1876 all Native American Indians were ordered to move into reservations. 

And in 1982 Sandy Duncan gave her final performance as “Peter Pan” in Los Angeles, CA. She completed 956 performances without missing a show.

In 1850 Henry Clay introduced in the Senate a compromise bill on slavery that included the admission of California into the Union as a free state. 

In 1856 Britain’s highest military decoration, the Victoria Cross, was founded by Queen Victoria. 

In 1916 Paris was bombed by German zeppelins for the first time during WWI. 

And in 1940 the W. Atlee Burpee Seed Company displayed the first tetraploid flowers at the New York City Flower Show.

In 1807 London’s Pall Mall became the first street lit by gaslight. 

In 1915 the Coast Guard was created by an act of Congress.

And in 1986 the U.S. space shuttle Challenger exploded just after takeoff killing all seven crew members.

In 1880 Thomas Edison patented the electric incandescent lamp. 

In 1900 foreign diplomats in Peking, China, fearing a revolt, demanded that the imperial government discipline the Boxer rebels.   

In 1945 Soviet troops liberated the Nazi concentration camps Auschwitz and Birkenau in Poland. 

And in 1973 the Vietnam peace accords were signed in Paris.

On this day in 1788 the first European settlers in Australia, led by Captain Arthur Phillip, landed in what became known as Sydney. The group had first settled at Botany Bay eight days before. This day is celebrated as Australia Day. 

In 1802 Congress passed an act calling for a library to be established within the U.S. Capitol. 

In 1870 the state of Virgina rejoined the Union. 

And in 1905 the Cullinan diamond, at 3,106.75 carats, was found by Captain Wells at the Premier Mine, near Pretoria, South Africa.

On this day in 1848 James W. Marshall discovered a gold nugget at Sutter’s Mill, California, which led to the gold rush of ’49. 

In 1908 the first Boy Scout troop was organized in England by Robert Baden-Powell. 

In 1955 the rules committee of major league baseball announced a plan to strictly enforce the rule that required a pitcher to release the ball within 20 seconds after taking his position on the mound. They will re-examine that this year. The plan is to have a pitch clock in one of the minor leagues to try and speed up the game, then make a decision for all of baseball based on those results. Should be interesting.

And in 1978 a nuclear-powered Soviet satellite plunged through Earth’s atmosphere and disintegrated, scattering debris over parts of Canada’s Northwest Territory.

On this day in 1793, during the French Revolution, King Louis XVI was executed by guillotine after he had been condemned for treason. 

In 1861 the future president of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis of Mississippi, resigned from the U.S. Senate. Four other Southerners also resigned. It’s also Stonewall Jackson’s birthday.

In 1908 the Sullivan Ordinance was passed in New York City making smoking by women illegal. The measure was vetoed by Mayor George B. McClellan Jr. 

And in 1954 the Nautilus was launched in Groton, CT. It was the first atomic-powered submarine. U.S. First Lady Mamie Eisenhower broke the traditional bottle of champagne across the bow.
