Tomorrow we have 3 things happening. I’m not sure of the exact times, so I’m posting this today so those interested won’t miss anything. As you know, tomorrow is the Spring Equinox, but there are two other rare celestial events occurring as well, a total solar eclipse, and a new super moon. I plan on having my camera out and will hopefully see something.

On this day in 1628 The Massachusetts colony was founded by Englishmen. 

In 1687 French explorer La Salle was murdered by his own men while searching for the mouth of the Mississippi River, in the Gulf of Mexico.  

In 1822 the city of Boston, MA, was incorporated. 

In 1915 Pluto was photographed for the first time. However, it was not known at the time. 

And in 1945 about 800 people were killed as Japanese kamikaze planes attacked the U.S. carrier Franklin off Japan.

In 1756 St. Patrick’s Day was celebrated in New York City for the first time. 

In 1776 British forces evacuated Boston to Nova Scotia during the Revolutionary War. 

In 1917 America’s first bowling tournament for ladies began in St. Louis, MO. Almost 100 women participated in the event. 

And in 1966 a U.S. submarine found a missing H-bomb in the Mediterranean off of Spain.

In 1802 Congress established the West Point Military Academy in New York.

In 1913 the 15,000-ton battleship Pennsylvania was launched at Newport News, VA.  

And in 1984 William Buckley, the CIA station chief in Beirut, was kidnapped by gunmen. He died while in captivity.

In 1864 Samuel Baker discovered another source of the Nile in East Africa.

In 1914 Henry Ford announced the new continuous motion method to assemble cars. The process decreased the time to make a car from 12½ hours to 93 minutes. 

And in 1943 FDR became the first U.S. President to fly in an airplane while in office.

In 1933 President Paul von Hindenburg dropped the flag of the German Republic and ordered that the swastika and empire banner be flown side by side.  

And in 1974 “Wonder Woman” debuted on ABC-TV.

On this day in 0049 BC Julius Caesar crossed the Rubicon and invaded Italy.

In 1656, in the American colony of Virginia, suffrage was extended to all free men regardless of their religion.  

In 1804 the formal ceremonies transferring the Louisiana Purchase from France to the U.S. took place in St. Louis.

In 1876 Alexander Graham Bell made the first successful call with the telephone. He spoke the words “Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you.” 

And in 1969 James Earl Ray pled guilty in Memphis, TN, to the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. Ray later repudiated the guilty plea and maintained his innocence until his death in April of 1998. Today is also his birthday.
