On this day in 1815 Napoleon Bonaparte set sail for St. Helena, in the South Atlantic. The remainder of his life was spent there in exile.

In 1899 the refrigerator was patented by A.T. Marshall.

In 1945 the United Nations Charter was signed by President Truman.

In 1966 Michael DeBakey became the first surgeon to install an artificial heart pump in a patient.

In 1974 President Nixon announced that he would resign the following day.

And in 1999 some guy I never heard of named Wade Boggs got his 3,000th hit of his major league baseball career. 🙂

On this day in 1789 the U.S. War Department was established by the U.S. Congress.

In 1782 George Washington created the Order of the Purple Heart.

In 1934 the U.S. Court of Appeals upheld a lower court ruling striking down the government’s attempt to ban the controversial James Joyce novel “Ulysses.”

In 1942 U.S. forces landed at Guadalcanal, marking the start of the first major allied offensive in the Pacific during World War II.

In 1974 French stuntman Philippe Petit walked a tightrope strung between the twin towers of New York’s World Trade Center.

And in 1990 President George H.W. Bush ordered U.S. troops and warplanes to Saudi Arabia to guard against a possible invasion by Iraq.

On this day in 1787 sixty proof sheets of the Constitution of the United States are delivered to the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

In 1862, during American Civil War, the Confederate ironclad CSS Arkansas is scuttled on the Mississippi River after suffering damage in a battle with USS Essex near Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

In 1965 US President Lyndon B. Johnson signs the Voting Rights Act of 1965 into law.

And in 1988 the Tompkins Square Park Riot in New York City spurs a reform of the NYPD, held responsible for the event.

Today is Lucille Ball’s birthday, and since we’re fans around my house….

Not many birthdays to choose from, but this guy performed this song on TV (American Bandstand) for the first time on this day in 1960. I couldn’t find that one, but I did find one from 2 days later on Dick Clark’s Saturday Night Show.

And on this day in 1833 the village of Chicago was incorporated.

In 1861 the U.S. federal government levied its first income tax.  The tax was 3% of all incomes over $800.

In 1884, on Bedloe’s Island in New York Harbor, the cornerstone for the Statue of Liberty was laid.

In 1923 Henry Sullivan became the first American to swim across the English Channel.

In 1944 Polish insurgents liberated a German labor camp in Warsaw.  348 Jewish prisoners were freed.

And in 1974 President Nixon said that he expected to be impeached.

On this day in 1492 Christopher Columbus left Palos, Spain with three ships. The voyage would lead him to what is now known as the Americas.

In 1900 Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. was founded.

In 1914 Germany declared war on France. The next day World War I began when Britain declared war on Germany.

In 1923 Calvin Coolidge was sworn in as the 30th president of the U.S. after the sudden death of President Harding.

In 1933 the Mickey Mouse Watch was introduced for the price of $2.75.

In 1949 the National Basketball Association (NBA) was formed.

In 1958 the Nautilus became the first vessel to cross the North Pole underwater.

And in 1981 U.S. traffic controllers with PATCO, the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization, went on strike.  They were fired just as President Reagan had warned.

On this day in 1776 members of the Continental Congress began adding their signatures to the Declaration of Independence.

In 1790 the first US Census was conducted.

In 1858 in Boston and New York City the first mailboxes were installed along streets.

In 1921 eight White Sox players were acquitted of throwing the 1919 World Series.

In 1939 Albert Einstein signed a letter to President Roosevelt urging the U.S. to have an atomic weapons research program.

 Also in 1939, President Roosevelt signed the Hatch Act. The act prohibited civil service employees from taking an active part in political campaigns.

In 1943 the U.S. Navy patrol torpedo boat, PT-109, sank after being attacked by a Japanese destroyer. The boat was under the command of Lt. John F. Kennedy.

And in 1990 Iraq invaded the oil-rich country of Kuwait.

On this day in 1801, during the First Barbary War, the American schooner USS Enterprise captures the Tripolitan polacca Tripoli in a single-ship action off the coast of modern-day Libya.

In 1876 Colorado is admitted as the 38th U.S. state.

In 1907 the start of the first Scout camp on Brownsea Island began. It was the origin of the worldwide Scouting movement.

In 1957 the United States and Canada formed the North American Air Defense Command (NORAD).

And in 1981 MTV began broadcasting in the United States and airs its first video, “Video Killed the Radio Star” by the Buggles.

In 1971 men rode in a vehicle on the moon for the first time in a lunar rover vehicle (LRV).

On this day in 1619 the first representative assembly in America convened in Jamestown, VA.

In 1729 the city of Baltimore was founded in Maryland.

In 1932 Walt Disney’s “Flowers and Trees” premiered. It was the first Academy Award winning cartoon.

In 1942 the WAVES were created by legislation signed by U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

In 1945 the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine. The ship had just delivered key components of the Hiroshima atomic bomb to the Pacific island of Tinian. Only 316 out of 1,196 men aboard survived the attack.

In 1956 the phrase “In God We Trust” was adopted as the U.S. national motto.

In 1965 President Johnson signed into law the Social Security Act that established Medicare and Medicaid.

And in 1974 the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee voted to impeach President Nixon for blocking the Watergate investigation and for abuse of power.

On this day in 1773 the first schoolhouse to be located west of the Allegheny Mountains was built in Schoenbrunn, OH.

In 1914 the first transcontinental telephone service was inaugurated when two people held a conversation between New York, NY and San Francisco, CA.

In 1940 John Sigmund of St. Louis, MO, completed a 292-mile swim down the Mississippi River. The swim from St. Louis to Caruthersville, MO took him 89 hours and 48 minutes.  😯

In 1958 the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) was authorized by the U.S. Congress.

And in 1981 England’s Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer were married.
