On this day in 1752 The Pennsylvania Hospital opened as the very first hospital in America.

In 1808 Judge Jesse Fell experimented by burning anthracite coal to keep his house warm. He successfully showed how clean the coal burned and how cheaply it could be used as a heating fuel. 

In 1812 the term “gerrymandering” had its beginning when the governor of Massachusetts, Elbridge Gerry, signed a redistricting law that favored his party.

In 1936 pumping began the process to build San Francisco’s Treasure Island.

In 1943 General Dwight David Eisenhower was selected to command the allied armies in Europe.

And in 2006, in Texas, U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot and wounded a companion during a quail hunt. 😯

On this day in 1763 The Treaty of Paris ended the French and Indian War. In the treaty France ceded Canada to England.

In 1863 the fire extinguisher was patented by Alanson Crane.

In 1870 the YWCA was founded in New York City.

In 1897 “The New York Times” began printing “All the news that’s fit to print” on their front page. Now it’s just DNC propaganda. 🙂

In 1933 the singing telegram was introduced by the Postal Telegraph Company of New York City.

And in 1949 “Death of a Salesman” opened at the Morocco Theatre in New York City.

In 1802 Simon Willard patented the banjo clock.

In 1861 The Confederate States of America was formed.

In 1910 William D. Boyce incorporated the Boy Scouts of America.

In 1918 “The Stars and Stripes” newspaper was published for the first time.

And in 1973 U.S. Senate leaders named seven members of a select committee to investigate the Watergate scandal.

It’s Friday!

On this day in 1795 the 11th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified. The amendment clarifies judicial power over foreign nationals and limits the ability of citizens to sue states.

In 1922 DeWitt and Lila Acheson Wallace offered 5,000 copies of “Reader’s Digest” magazine for the first time.

In 1940 “Pinocchio” world premiered at the Center Theatre in Manhattan.

In 1943 the U.S. government announced that shoe rationing would go into effect in two days. Women were hardest hit by the news. 🙂

And in 1962 the U.S. government banned all Cuban imports and re-export of U.S. products to Cuba from other countries.

In 1926 the National Football League adopted a rule that made players ineligible for competition until their college class graduated.

In 1952 Britain’s King George VI died. His daughter, Elizabeth II, succeeded him.

In 1959 the U.S., for the first time, successfully test-fired a Titan intercontinental ballistic missile from Cape Canaveral.

In 1987 President Ronald Reagan turned 76 years old this day and became the oldest U.S. President in history.

And in 1998 Washington National Airport was renamed for President Ronald Reagan.

In 1881 Phoenix, AZ, was incorporated.

In 1952, in New York City, four signs were installed at 44th Street and Broadway in Times Square that told pedestrians “don’t walk.”

In 1953 the Walt Disney’s film “Peter Pan” opened at the Roxy Theatre in New York City.

And in 1988 a pair of indictments were unsealed in Florida, accusing Panama’s military leader, Gen. Manuel Antonio Noriega, of bribery and drug trafficking.

On this day in 1690 the first paper money in America was issued by the Massachusetts colony. The currency was used to pay soldiers that were fighting in the war against Quebec.

In 1783 Spain recognized the independence of the United States.

In 1913 the 16th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified. It authorized the power to impose and collect income tax.

In 1916 Ottawa, Canada’s original parliament buildings burned down.

And in 1966 the first rocket-assisted controlled landing on the Moon was made by the Soviet space vehicle Luna IX.

In 1790 the U.S. Supreme Court convened for the first time in New York City. 

In 1861 Texas voted to secede from the Union.

In 1862 “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” by Julia Ward Howe was first published in the “Atlantic Monthly.”

In 1893 Thomas A. Edison completed work on the world’s first motion picture studio in West Orange, NJ.

It’s finally Friday!

On this day in 1865 the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives. It was ratified by the necessary number of states on December 6, 1865.  The amendment abolished slavery in the United States.

Also in 1865, General Robert E. Lee was named general-in-chief of the Confederate armies. 

In 1876 all Native American Indians were ordered to move into reservations.

In 1940 the first Social Security check was issued by the U.S. Government.

And in 1950 President Truman announced that he had ordered development of the hydrogen bomb.
