Good Morning!

On this day in 1778 Britain evacuated Philadelphia during the U.S. Revolutionary War.

In 1812 The War of 1812 began as the U.S. declared war against Great Britain. The conflict began over trade restrictions. 

In 1815, at the Battle of Waterloo Napoleon was defeated by an international army under the Duke of Wellington. Napoleon abdicated on June 22. 

In 1928 Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean.

And in 1959 a Federal Court annulled the Arkansas law allowing school closings to prevent integration.

On this day in 0362 Emperor Julian issued an edict banning Christians from teaching in Syria. 

In 1775 the British took Bunker Hill outside of Boston.  

In 1885 the Statue of Liberty arrived in New York City aboard the French ship Isere

And in 1963 the U.S. Supreme Court banned the required reading of the Lord’s prayer and Bible in public schools.

In 1567 Mary, Queen of Scots, was imprisoned in Lochleven Castle in Scotland. 

In 1858, in a speech in Springfield, IL, U.S. Senate candidate Abraham Lincoln said the slavery issue had to be resolved. He declared, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” 

In 1952 “Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl” was published in the United States. 

And in 1978 the film adaptation of “Grease” premiered in New York City.

On this day in 1775 the Continental Army was founded by the Second Continental Congress for purposes of common defense. This event is considered to be the birth of the United States Army. On June 15, George Washington was appointed commander-in-chief.

And in 1777 the Continental Congress in Philadelphia adopted the “Stars and Stripes” as the national flag of the United States. The Flag Resolution stated “Resolved: that the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation.” On May 20, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson officially proclaimed June 14 “Flag Day” as a commemoration of the “Stars and Stripes.”

On this day in 1898 the Canadian Yukon Territory was organized.

In 1912 Captain Albert Berry made the first successful parachute jump from an airplane in Jefferson, Mississippi. 

In 1927 Charles Lindbergh was honored with a ticker-tape parade in New York City. 

In 1943 German spies landed on Long Island, New York. They were soon captured. 

And in 1978 Israelis withdrew the last of their forces from Lebanon.

In 1981 Major League Baseball players began a 49 day strike.

And in 1987 President Reagan publicly challenged Mikhail Gorbachev to tear down the Berlin Wall.

On this day in 1895 Charles E. Duryea received the first U.S. patent granted to an American inventor for a gasoline-driven automobile. 

In 1910 Jacques-Yves Cousteau was born. He was the French underwater explorer that invented the Aqua-Lung diving apparatus. 

In 1930 William Beebe dove to a record-setting depth of 1,426 feet off the coast of Bermuda. He used a diving chamber called a bathysphere.

In 1937 Soviet leader Josef Stalin began a purge of Red Army generals. 

And in 1973, after a ruling by the Justice Department of the State of Pennsylvania, women were licensed to box or wrestle.

In 1790 John Barry copyrighted “Philadelphia Spelling Book.” It was the first American book to be copyrighted. 

In 1934 Donald Duck made his debut in the Silly Symphonies cartoon “The Wise Little Hen.” 

In 1943 the withholding tax on payrolls was authorized by Congress. 

In 1957 Chas married his wife Elvera. 🙂

And in 1959 the first ballistic missile carrying submarine, the USS George Washington, was launched.

And in 1966 Sony Corporation unveiled its brand new consumer home videotape recorder. The black and white only unit sold for $995.
