On this day in 1798 the U.S. Marine Corps was formally re-established by “An Act for Establishing a Marine Corps” passed by the U.S. Congress.

In 1864 Confederate forces led by Gen. Jubal Early began an invasion of Washington, DC. They turned back the next day. 

In 1972 U.S. forces broke the 95-day siege at An Loc in Vietnam. 

And in 1998 U.S. Air Force Lt. Michael Blassie, a casualty of the Vietnam War, was laid to rest near his Missouri home. He had been positively identified from his remains that had been enshrined in the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington, VA.

And in 1962 Fred Baldasare swam the English Channel underwater. It was 42 miles and took 18 hours.

In 1872 the doughnut cutter was patented by John F. Blondel. 

In 1877 Alexander Graham Bell, Gardiner Greene Hubbard, Thomas Sanders and Thomas Watson formed the Bell Telephone Company.

In 1943 American and British forces made an amphibious landing on Sicily.

And in 1971 the United States turned over complete responsibility of the Demilitarized Zone to South Vietnamese units.

On this day in 1814 U.S. troops under Jacob Brown defeated a superior British force at Chippewa, Canada. 

In 1863 Federal troops occupied Vicksburg, MS, and distributed supplies to the citizens. 

In 1916 Adelina and August Van Buren started on the first successful transcontinental motorcycle tour to be attempted by two women. They started in New York City and arrived in San Diego, CA, on September 12, 1916. 

In 1943 the battle of Kursk began as German tanks attack the Soviet salient. It was the largest tank battle in history. 

And in 1989 former U.S. National Security Council aide Oliver North received a $150,000 fine and a suspended prison term for his part in the Iran-Contra affair. The convictions were later overturned.

In 1857 New York City’s first elevated railroad officially opened for business. 

In 1926 the U.S. Congress established the Army Air Corps. 

In 1947 an object crashed near Roswell, NM. The U.S. Army Air Force insisted it was a weather balloon, but eyewitness accounts led to speculation that it might have been an alien spacecraft. 

And in 1979 the U.S. Mint officially released the Susan B. Anthony coin in Rochester, NY.
