What’s interesting in the news today?

Open thread, as always.

First up, hey, it’s only a million… What’s to worry about?

From TheWashingtonTimes  “The Homeland Security Department has lost track of more than 1 million people  who it knows arrived in the U.S. but who it cannot prove left the country,  according to an audit Tuesday that also found the department probably won’t meet  its own goals for deploying an entry-exit system.

The findings were revealed as Congress debates an immigration bill, and the Government  Accountability Office’s report could throw up another hurdle because  lawmakers in the House and Senate have said that  any final deal must include a workable system to track entries and exits and cut  down on so-called visa overstays.”

I’m sure none of them are terrorists, or anyone else we should be concerned about. 🙄

Next we have a “Phony Scandal” update.

From NationalReview  “Embattled Internal Revenue Service official Lois Lerner and an attorney in the Federal Election Commission’s general counsel’s office appear to have twice colluded to influence the record before the FEC’s vote in the case of a conservative non-profit organization, according to e-mails unearthed by the House Ways and Means Committee and obtained exclusively by National Review Online. The correspondence suggests the discrimination of conservative groups extended beyond the IRS and into the FEC, where an attorney from the agency’s enforcement division in at least one case sought and received tax information about the status of a conservative group, the American Future Fund, before recommending that the commission prosecute it for violations of campaign-finance law. Lerner, the former head of the IRS’s exempt-organizations division, worked at the FEC from 1986 to 1995, and was known for aggressive investigation of conservative groups during her tenure there, too.”

From TMZ  “George Zimmerman is still armed and theoretically dangerous …  he was stopped by cops for speeding and revealed he had a gun in his glove  compartment.

Zimmerman was speeding in Forney, Texas on Sunday, just  after noon, when he was stopped by police.  Zimmerman told cops he was  headed “nowhere in particular,” and informed them he had a firearm in his glove  compartment.

Zimmerman was given a warning, after cops determined he was  free of warrants.  He was sent on his way with a polite goodbye, “Have a  safe trip.””

No ticket, and he got to keep his gun. Holder will not be pleased. 🙂 Double Bonus! 🙂

Here’s another feel good story out of the great state of Texas.

From TheNewAmerican  “The Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) appears to be losing its intimidating touch as it goes about its business of trying to stop people from praying and expressing their faith in public. The atheist group’s latest attack has come against the city council of League City, Texas, which has included prayer by local clergy in its regular government meetings since the early 1960s.

In a July 15 letter to Mayor Tim Paulissen and the League City Council, the FFRF went through its customary paces in attempting to browbeat the city fathers into submission. Appealing to the First Amendment’s supposed “separation of state and church,” the godless group’s staff attorney, Elizabeth Cavell, called the city’s tradition of allowing both local residents and government officials to open the meetings in prayer of “dubious legality,” insisting that such prayers are “unnecessary, inappropriate, and divisive.”

Cavell advised that while government officials “are free to pray privately or to worship on their own time in their own way,” they “do not need to worship on taxpayers’ time.” Cavell complained that inviting council members and locals to offer invocations at the government meetings “is coercive and beyond the authority of any government.””

“As it happened, Mayor Paulissen and the city council appeared to be disinclined to follow the FFRF’s self-serving advice. Paulissen told the Houston Chronicle that he and the other city fathers had no plans to drop the 52-year tradition of opening council meetings with an invocation.”

Finally someone stands up to the atheist bullies. Good. 🙂

First, from YahooNews  “President Barack Obama’s decision to delay implementation of part of his healthcare reform law will cost $12 billion and leave a million fewer Americans with employer-sponsored health insurance in 2014, congressional researchers said Tuesday.”

Liberal activists are claiming thousands will die….. unless they get their dream of single-payer. 🙄

From CNSNews  ““Thousands of people will die every year” and “costs will continue to go out of control” under Obamacare, says Public Citizen President Robert Weissman.

The only solution is to nationalize health care through a single-payer system, Reps. John Conyers (D-Mich.) and Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Public Citizen argued outside the U.S. Capitol Wednesday.”

And then, The Dishonor System – A user’s guide to committing fraud on the Obama­care exchanges.

And this is the last I have for you today. We’ve always known Hollywood was full of narcissists and selfish people. But now it seems their need for hang-over remedies and beauty treatments is adversely affecting the lives of pre-mature children as well.

From WTOP.com  ” It sounds like a Third World problem: Hospitals are rationing,  bartering and hoarding critical nutrients that premature infants need to survive.  But it’s a problem that’s  happening in the  Washington area and in other major cities across the country.”

“This is a national emergency, this is a public  health crisis and the government isn’t doing anything about it,” Robbins says.”

“”So essentially, premature babies are suffering because they can’t get access to  the same nutrients that some celebrities are using to pretty-up before a photo  shoot,” says Robbins, who adds that people are also using the drugs for a hangover  cure. 

Why are celebrities getting the drugs, and not the infants in critical  condition?”

What news stories should we talk about today?

First up, a couple of stories on the economy.

From TheWashingtonPost  “But anyone who thinks that the short-run battle is over should take a look at a new report by Daniel Alpert over at the Century Foundation. Alpert notes that while the headline unemployment number is well below its recession-era peak, that’s almost 100 percent due to declines in the labor force participation rate — that is, the share of the population that’s either employed or actively looking for work. Don’t believe him? Take a look at this chart:”

“Now, look at the blue dotted line. That’s the labor force participation rate. See how it nearly perfectly tracks the movements of the unemployment rate? That’s a pretty good sign that people leaving the labor force, rather than getting jobs, is what’s driving the latter down.

To drive the point home, Alpert calculates what the unemployment rate would be absent any decline in labor-force participation. Spoiler: it’d be right where it was during the worst of the recession.”

Next up, it’s always about what they leave out.

From CNSNews  “Here’s what Mr. Carney didn’t say:Since February of 2009, the first full month of Obama’s presidency, 9.5 million Americans have dropped out of the labor force.  Nearly 90 million Americans are not working today!

That means that 1.3 Americans have dropped out of the labor force for every one job the administration claims to have created.

“There are 15 million more Americans on food stamps today than when Obama assumed office.”

What shocks me is the number of people who buy the damaged goods that the White House is trying to sell.

From TheWashingtonTimes  “Delaware state officials have told Congress that they likely destroyed the computer records that would show when and how  often they accessed Christine  O’Donnell’s personal tax records and acknowledged that a newspaper article  was used as the sole justification for snooping into the former GOP  Senate candidate’s tax history.

The revelations to Sen. Chuck  Grassley’s office came Tuesday as the Treasury  Department’s inspector general for tax administration, the government’s  chief watchdog for the Internal  Revenue Service, formally reopened its investigation into the matter by  re-interviewing Ms. O’Donnell.”

““So far, it appears the department destroys the access records after a short  amount of time,” Mr. Grassley said.  “That’s puzzling. Unless the IRS has a back-up, and I hope the IRS does, there’s no way to know  how and when Delaware state employees accessed Christine  O’Donnell’s federal tax records.””

Convenient no?

From OneNewsNow  “According to Pastor Charles Flowers of Faith Outreach International, the city leaders want to add two categories to the policy: sexual orientation and gender identity. “

The ordinance also says that if you have at any point demonstrated a bias – without defining what a bias is or who will determine whether or not one has been exercised – that you cannot get a city contract,” he tells OneNewsNow. “Neither can any of your subcontractors [who have demonstrated a bias] sign on to the contract.”

Moreover, according to a draft of the revised policy, no one who has spoken out against homosexuality or the transgender lifestyle can run for city council or be appointed to a board. Flowers says the Arizona-based legal firm Alliance Defending Freedom has taken a look at the ordinance.”

Christians need not apply I guess.

Next up, activist or judge? When you know the answer, you’ll see why they want to rush this thru during recess.

Ed Whalen of NRO’s Bench Memos suspects that Pillard (who’s been described to him as “less moderate” than the most activist liberal in appellate court history) wouldn’t survive intense scrutiny. The hurry, Whalen warns, “seems designed to prevent a careful review of their records. Obama himself has taken forever to make nominations to the D.C. Circuit, and that court remains underworked, so it is difficult to see the justification for the sudden rush.”

Unfortunately for Americans, the Senate won’t have to dig too deep to uncover some of Pillard’s shockers. Among some of her greatest hits, the former Deputy Assistant Attorney General argues that abortion is necessary to help “free women from historically routine conscription into maternity.” As if her militant feminism wasn’t apparent enough, she takes the opportunity in some of her writings to slam anyone who opposes the abortion-contraception mandate as “reinforce[ing] broader patterns of discrimination against women as a class of presumptive breeders.”

A mother of two, Nina wrote a 2011 paper, “Against the New Maternalism,” which argues that by celebrating motherhood, society is creating a “self-fulfilling cycle of discrimination.” Those ideas bleed into Pillard’s extreme pro-abortion views, which suggest that technology is somehow manipulating Americans to consider the personhood of the unborn. In one of her most jaw-dropping statements, the President’s nominee even criticizes the ultrasound. She believes it manufactures “deceptive images of fetus-as-autonomous-being that the anti-choice movement has popularized since the advent of amniocentesis.””

And this last one is not at all shocking. Of course the media would love this guy.

From FoxNews  “Reza Aslan, author of the new book, “Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth” has been  interviewed on a host of media outlets in the last week. Riding a publicity  wave, the book has surged to #2 on Amazon’s list.

Media reports have introduced Aslan as a “religion scholar” but have failed  to mention that he is a devout Muslim.

His book is not a historian’s report on Jesus. It is an educated Muslim’s  opinion about Jesus — yet the book is being peddled as objective history  on national TV and radio.”

““Zealot” is a fast-paced demolition of the core beliefs that Christianity has  taught about Jesus for 2,000 years. Its conclusions are long-held Islamic  claims—namely, that Jesus was a zealous prophet type who didn’t claim to be God,  that Christians have misunderstood him, and that the Christian Gospels are not  the actual words or life of Jesus but “myth.””

I’m sure they’d be just as happy to plug a book written by a Christian that was critical of Mohammed. And you just know they’d get plenty of airtime right? 🙄

What’s interesting in the news today?

First up…

From RealClearPolitics  “A week after George Zimmerman’s acquittal in the fatal shooting of black  teenager Trayvon Martin, the backlash continues, with nationwide protests and  calls to boycott Florida. President Obama spoke some undeniable truths when he  noted that the African-American community’s reaction must be seen in the context  of a long, terrible history of racism. But there is another context too: that of  an ideology-based, media-driven false narrative that has distorted a tragedy  into a racist outrage.

This narrative has transformed Zimmerman, a man of racially mixed  heritage that included white, Hispanic and black roots (a grandmother who  helped raise him had an Afro-Peruvian father), into an honorary white male  steeped in white privilege. It has cast him as a virulent racist even though he  once had a black business partner, mentored African-American kids, lived in a  neighborhood about 20 percent black, and participated in complaints about a white police lieutenant’s son getting away with beating a homeless black man.”

Next up, I asked before, I’ll ask again. Assisting, or orchestrating?

From TheDailyCaller  “At CRS headquarters, we (meaning I) regularly had to warn or take corrective  action against career employees for acting as advocates instead of mediators,”  Ondray Harris, the former director of the DOJ’s Community Relations Service  (CRS), told The Daily Caller. CRS was the unit deployed to Sanford in 2012 to  oversee anti-Zimmerman protests.

“Some CRS employees come to the Agency with anti-law enforcement or anti-  what they would call the ‘white establishment’ [attitudes]” added Harris, an  African American who joined CRS during the administration of George W. Bush in  2007 and left in 2010.”

And Obama supported “Stand Your Ground” laws, even co-sponsored it in Illinois. His flip-flop is recent. Again.

The Obama-sponsored bill (SB 2386) enlarged the state’s 1961 law by shielding the person who was attacked from being sued in civil court by perpetrators or their estates when a “stand your ground” defense is used in protecting his or her person, dwelling or other property.

The bill unanimously passed the Democrat-controlled Illinois Senate on March 25, 2004 with only one comment, and passed the Democrat-controlled Illinois House in May 2004 with only two votes in opposition. Then-Governor Rod Blagojevich (D) signed it into law.”

And the case for standing your ground on “Stand Your Ground”.

This is a subject which I’d thought was pretty much settled law, but has recently been brought back into the spotlight by Eric Holder, as well as his boss. Some of the opinions being expressed by our nation’s top cops fly directly in the face of the principles underlying current law in many areas. In fact, as Cooke points out, this concept is one which has found a comfortable home in many more places than you might think. For proof, he cites Eugene Volokh.

The substantial majority view among the states, by a 31-19 margin, is no duty to retreat. Florida is thus part of this substantial majority on this point. And most of these states took this view even before the recent spate of “stand your ground” statutes, including the Florida statute.”

Clueless about the law, or willfully ignoring it? Either way, that seems to be their M.O.

Shulman — joined by his chief of staff and political aide Jonathan Davis and  IRS spokesman Frank Keith —  met with then-Office of Management and Budget  (OMB) Director Jeffrey Zients at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building at the  White House complex on April 24, 2012.”

“The very next day, April 25, the IRS’s chief counsel’s office — led by William  Wilkins, who  met with Obama at the White House that same week – sent  Washington-based IRS officials “additional comments on the draft guidance” for  approving or denying tea party tax-exempt applications, according to a report on  the IRS scandal compiled by Treasury Inspector General J. Russell George.”

More waste, fraud, and abuse in the nations many food programs.

From WatchDog.org  “Since Illinois has seen an explosion in the number of people receiving food stamps, even a slight error costs taxpayers millions.

In this instance, a mistake rate of less than 2 percent means $50 million is misspent.

That’s the hard truth behind the press release lauding Illinois for having a 98.3 percent accuracy rate for its Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program.

Illinois’ error rate, from either overspending on food stamps or not spending enough, is 1.74 percent, according to Januari Smith, a spokeswoman for the state’s Department of Human Services.“

So the Feds have rewarded the state for their errors because hey, 50 mil in errors isn’t that bad. And what’s 50 million when you have 3 billion to play with?

From HotAir  “Earlier this summer, three of California’s largest insurance companies announced that they were disinclined to participate in the state’s ObamaCare health insurance exchange system, and it didn’t take long for both Aetna and United Health to decide to stop offering plans through the individual insurance market altogether and instead opt to focus their activities on offering insurance through employers only.

Now, Anthem Blue Cross — California’s largest insurer for small businesses — is announcing that they have no intention of getting involved in the exchanges that ObamaCare plans to set up for the use of small business, and would much rather stick to going it alone. Via the LA Times.”

Let me guess, it’s ‘cuz they’re evil, profit chasing meanies right? 🙄

From Salon  “While politicians like Rick Perry and pundits like Bill O’Reilly may clog up a lot of media airtime, the proportion of religious conservatives in the United States is shrinking with each successive generation, and close to 20 percent of Americans today are religious progressives, according to a new survey conducted by the Public Religion Research Institute and the Brookings Institution.”

“Religious progressives are significantly younger and more diverse than their conservative counterparts. The mean age of the religious progressive population is 44 – just under the mean age in the general population of 47 – while the mean age of religious conservatives is 53. Twenty-three percent of Millennials (ages 18-33) are religious progressives, while 17 percent are religious conservatives. Among Millennials, there are also nearly as many nonreligious (22 percent) as religious progressives.”

“They also tend to value different things in their faith:”

Yep. They value things like abortion and the “social gospel” instead of The Gospel.

What’s interesting in the news today?

First up, the Race Card, how original. 🙄

From CNSNews  “Addressing the annual NAACP convention in Orlando, Fla., Health and  Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said that opponents of  Obamacare are the same kind of people who opposed civil rights  legislation in the 1960s.”

“”The  same arguments against change, the same fear and misinformation that  opponents used then are the same ones opponents are spreading now. ‘This  won’t work,’ ‘Slow down,’ ‘Let’s wait,’ they say.”

Holder wasn’t gonna be outdone.

Also from CNSNews  “The  nation’s top cop indicated that police treatment of black men and boys  is part of America’s (alleged) racial problem. “And we must confront the  underlying attitudes, mistaken beliefs, and unfortunate stereotypes that  serve too often as the basis for police action and private judgments,”  Holder said.

Just as his own father warned him about the police, so Holder says he has felt it necessary to warn his son:”

And here’s a story on the NAACP conference Holder and Sebelius attended blackballing conservative black leaders.

From TownHall  “According to author and Fox News contributor Deneen Borelli and her husband, Tom Borelli, black conservatives have been blacklisted from the NAACP’s national conferences for years. When the Borellis, who are employees of the conservative group FreedomWorks, attempted to pay for booth space at this year’s 104th National NAACP conference in Florida, they were told there was no room for them despite plenty of exhibit space remaining open.”

Meanwhile Obama tells Telemundo that the reason Republicans are against his amnesty plan is because they fear minorities in the majority. Race baiters, from the top down.

Jay Carney was shocked to hear about threats made to the Zimmerman family. Again, the first he’d heard there was a problem.

From TheWaPo  “A high school intern with the conservative Daily Caller Web site got into a testy exchange with White House Press Secretary Jay Carney Wednesday after asking if the White House would intervene to protect George Zimmerman from death threats in the wake of his acquittal on murder and manslaughter charges.

“Because of the death threats being received by George Zimmerman and his parents, is the president going to take any action for their security or are they on their own?” Gabe Finger asked.

Carney responded that he wasn’t aware of the threats and that Florida authorities would be responsible for handling them, but that Obama opposes “any violence of any kind” in response to the verdict in the Trayvon Martin case.”

And a little more background on the Zimmerman prosecutors. Can you say “malicious prosecution”? Yeah, I knew you could.

When Corey was appointed to handle the Zimmerman case, Talbot “Sandy” D’Alemberte, a former president of both the American Bar Association and Florida State University, criticized the decision: “I cannot imagine a worse choice for a prosecutor to serve in the Sanford case. There is nothing in Angela Corey’s background that suits her for the task, and she cannot command the respect of people who care about justice.” Corey responded by making a public-records request of the university for all e-mails, text messages, and phone messages in which D’Alemberte had mentioned Fernandez. Like Littlepage, D’Alemberte had earlier criticized Corey’s handling of the Fernandez case.

Not many people are willing to cross Corey. A Florida attorney I spoke with declined to go on record because of “concerns about retaliation” — that attorney has pending cases that will require Corey’s cooperation. The attorney mentioned colleagues who have refused to speak to the media for the same reason. And to think: D’Alemberte crossed Corey twice. He should get a medal.”

The lawmakers are drafting proposals intended to rein in racial profiling;  scrap state stand-your-ground laws; and promote better training for the nation’s  neighborhood watch volunteers, among other anti-violence measures. CBC  members had remained largely silent throughout the trial, but following the  verdict, argued forcefully that, decades after the civil rights movement, the  nation’s criminal justice system still discriminates against blacks and other  minorities.”

It’s odd that they’d want to scrap “Stand Your Ground”. Especially when you consider the facts.

Black Floridians have made about a third of the state’s total “Stand Your  Ground” claims in homicide cases, a rate nearly double the black percentage of  Florida’s population. The majority of those claims have been successful, a  success rate that exceeds that for Florida whites.”

At first the captured plate data was used just to check against lists of cars law enforcement hoped to locate for various reasons (to act on arrest warrants, find stolen cars, etc.). But increasingly, all of this data is being fed into massive databases that contain the location information of many millions of innocent Americans stretching back for months or even years.”

More here from FoxNews  “Law enforcement officials also point out that the  technology is legal in most cases, automating a practice that’s been done for  years. The ACLU found that only five states have laws governing license plate  readers. New Hampshire, for example, bans the technology except in narrow  circumstances, while Maine and Arkansas limit how long plate information can be  stored.

“There’s no expectation of privacy” for a vehicle  driving on a public road or parked in a public place, said Lt. Bill Hedgpeth, a  spokesman for the Mesquite Police Department in Texas, which has records  stretching back to 2008, although the city plans next month to begin deleting  files older than two years. “It’s just a vehicle. It’s just a license  plate.””

“A new study released ahead of the Fourth of July holiday sheds more light on  the tangle of paperwork facing America’s veterans — showing they’re up against  as many as 613 forms across 18 agencies as they seek services.

The study by the American Action Forum also found the paperwork — in part the result of  roughly 31 million Veterans Affairs claims alone each year — takes federal  employees roughly 43.3 million hours to process.

“Navigating 18 agencies and more than 600 forms has produced absurd results  and unnecessary delays,” the self-described “center-right” leaning nonprofit  said.”

And don’t think for a minute that ObamaCare will be any more efficient. The problems are already beginning in fact. So of course Democrats are trying to hide it, because they own it.

“I don’t know if Members of Congress will be hearing about it in town hall gatherings and other meetings back home over the Fourth of July recess, but the rolling thunder of the approaching ObamaCare train can be heard in the distance.  Smart Democrats are beginning to get frantic about the need to suppress the confusion and hide the cost of ObamaCare between now and the 2014 midterm elections.  We are just three months away from the October 1st enrollment start date and so far, nothing about the ObamaCare implementation process should be politically encouraging for Democrats.  In fact, the more people learn about ObamaCare, the more frightened they become.

Right now, small businesses across America are making the final determinations on how to reduce the working hours of their employees so fewer employees qualify for the mandated, employer-provided health insurance.  Employers are also deciding whether it makes more economic sense to pay a fine to the government or pay for healthcare benefits for their employees.  What this means is that hundreds of thousands – and perhaps even millions – of Americans will learn that they are being dismissed from their employer’s healthcare coverage.

The healthcare pink slips will start raining down in late summer and early fall.  This will push people into the healthcare exchanges, where, in some cases, people will be writing health insurance checks for the first time.  And in many cases, people will be facing increased health insurance costs, particularly if they are young and healthy.  The negative effects on personal income and the overall economy will be undeniable.  Sometime next year, before the elections, the penalties associated with not having or providing health insurance will begin to pour in.  Will the fines come in the mail?  Will you be able to appeal?  What happens if someone doesn’t pay?  No one knows.  Or, no one who knows is talking.  The consequences of ObamaCare are being hidden.”

They’re so frightened by it that they’ll now delay the employers mandate until after the 2014 mid-terms. Can’t have people finding out how bad it will be before the elections. Cowards.

“Businesses won’t be penalized next year if they fail to provide workers health insurance after the Obama administration decided to delay a key requirement under its signature 2010 health-care law.

The government will postpone enforcement of the so-called employer mandate until 2015, the administration said today. Under the provision, companies with 50 or more workers face a fine of as much as $3,000 per employee if they don’t offer affordable insurance.

The move addresses complaints from employer groups to President Barack Obama’s administration about the burden of the law’s reporting requirements. The decision pushes the issue past the 2014 midterm congressional elections, as Republicans have sought to make the health law a symbol of government overreach.”

Islamists are rallying to Morsi.

In Minya, Upper Egypt, where millions of Christians live, letters addressed to the Copts threatened them not to join the protests, otherwise their “businesses, cars, homes, schools, and churches” might “catch fire.” The message concluded by saying “If you are not worried about any of these, then worry about your children and your homes.  This message is being delivered with tact.  But when the moment of truth comes, there will be no tact.”  It’s signed by “People zealous for the nation.”

Such threats are hardly limited to anonymous letters.  During a recent TV interview, Sheikh Essam Abdulamek, a member of parliament’s Shura Council, warned Egypt’s Christians against participating in the June 30 protests, threatening them by saying “Do not sacrifice your children” since “general Muslim opinion will not be silent about the ousting of the president [Morsi].”

Since then, Edward Snowden reportedly leaked government documents that unveiled a secretive government program that did precisely what Wyden suggested in collecting meta data for cell phone and internet records of hundreds of millions of Americans.”

But Roger Clemens was tried for a far less important instance of lying. Why does this guy get a pass?

“Gallup’s most recent polling on the issue, taken this spring, indicates that more Americans actually regard themselves as “pro-life” than “pro-choice.”  According to the poll, 48 percent of Americans say they are “pro-life,” while 45 percent say they are “pro-choice.”  What’s more, opposition to abortion is rather plainly on the rise, as those numbers were effectively flipped ten years ago — and as, in the mid-1990s, the number of people who considered themselves “pro-choice” outpaced the number who considered themselves “pro-life” by about 20 percentage points.

Another finding from Gallup’s polling, however, is perhaps even more illuminating.  Those who work in America’s newsrooms are overwhelmingly in favor of abortion’s legality, and they tend to report the issue as if anyone who opposes abortion is a fringe religious fanatic.  (Moreover, they rarely miss an opportunity to subtly editorialize by describing opponents of abortion as being against “abortion rights.”)  It’s telling, therefore, that while Gallup’s polling indicates that a plurality of Americans are pro-life, Gallup’s respondents guessed that only about a third of their fellow Americans share those pro-life sentiments.”

While no malicious code was found, forensic analysis revealed an intruder had executed commands that appeared to involve search and exfiltration of data. This party also used sophisticated methods to remove all possible indications of unauthorized activity, and alter system times to cause further confusion. CBS News is taking steps to identify the responsible party and their method of access.””

In pretrial hearings in two cases, a Navy judge in Hawaii ruled this week that Obama had exerted “unlawful command influence” as commander-in-chief in outlining the specific “consequences” he saw fit for members of the military convicted of sexual assault.

As a result of Navy Judge Cmdr. Marcus Fulton’s rulings, the defendants in United States v. Johnson and United States v. Fuentes can’t be punitively discharged, even if they’re convicted of sexual assault. Stars and Stripes first reported on the rulings.”

Representative Tom Graves (R., Ga.) asked, “Have you asked the individuals who ordered them to use this extra scrutiny to punish, or penalize, or postpone, or deny?” George turns around to confer with his assistant. Just the fact that the inspector general had to confer to know the answer to this crucial question is amazing. George’s assistant says something to him that is not recorded, but one can see the assistant shaking his head back and forth. Then George responds publicly to the question, saying, “During our audit, Congressman, we did pose that question and no one would acknowledge who, if anyone, provided that direction.””

“Anyone who knows anything about the rights and responsibilities of an inspector general has to be shaking his head in disbelief at George’s explanation. First, every employee of the government has the responsibility to cooperate with and provide information to an IG concerning his work.”

The same thing they did with the so-called “independent” commission who investigated Benghazi as well. Meanwhile the so-called “investigation” by the FBI of IRS abuses has yet to interview even one conservative group who was targeted. How can you get to the bottom of a crime if you don’t talk to the victims? It’ll be yet another whitewash.

“The White House said that Obama had named John Emerson as the next  ambassador to Germany. According to the president’s campaign, Emerson raised at  least half a million dollars last year for the president’s reelection effort,  topping the between $100,000 and $200,000 he netted for Obama’s 2008  presidential campaign.

Obama has also nominated Rufus Gifford, a former finance director  for the Democratic National Committee and finance director of his reelection  campaign, as the next ambassador to Denmark. Gifford also served as a major  fundraiser for John Kerry’s 2004 presidential campaign and the chairman of the  president’s inaugural committee.

Gifford joins the relatively small ranks of openly gay men to be appointed a  U.S. ambassador. The president also appointed James Costos, an openly gay  executive at HBO, as the next American representative to Spain. Costos gave  $67,000 to support the president and Democratic National Committee during last  year’s race, according to the Federal Election Commission.”

That’s a twofer there.

“A State Department whistleblower has accused high-ranking staff of a massive coverup — including keeping a lid on findings that members of then-Secretary Hillary Clinton’s security detail and the Belgian ambassador solicited prostitutes.

A chief investigator for the agency’s inspector general wrote a memo outlining eight cases that were derailed by senior officials, including one instance of interference by Clinton’s chief of staff, Cheryl Mills.”

“Among the bombshell findings: * A DS agent was called off a case against US Ambassador to Belgium Howard Gutman over claims that he solicited prostitutes, including minors.”

“* At least seven agents in Clinton’s security detail hired prostitutes while traveling with her in various countries, including Russia and Colombia.”

Investigator say the hiring of prostitutes by Clinton’s security detail was “endemic”.

And if the interference came from her CoS, it came from her.

The Anti-Lobbying Act forbids federal bureaucrats from using money appropriated by Congress to influence “an official of any government, to favor, adopt, or oppose… any legislation, law, ratification, policy, or appropriation.” Sebelius evidently didn’t get the memo.

Specifically, it looks like Madam Commissar and her HHS minions have been using federal money to lobby state and local officials to “favor, adopt or oppose” countless initiatives involving everything from local zoning rules to ordinances concerning tobacco use to the imposition of new taxes on soft drinks. The cash they are thus spreading around comes from an obscure Obamacare trove called the “Prevention and Public Health Fund,” which provides Sebelius with what amounts to $12.5 billion in pin money.”

Others, like Samaritan’s Purse, underwent audits or other IRS scrutiny that seemed out of left field. What’s more, Lois Lerner, the head of the IRS’s division on tax-exempt organizations who was placed on administrative leave last month after declining to testify before a House committee, was rewarded with that job after a history of harassing religious people in a previous position as head of enforcement at the Federal Election Commission from 1986 to 2001.

Having lost whatever reputation it had for politically neutral enforcement of the tax code, the IRS, come August 1, will nevertheless gain new authority to determine what constitutes religious activity and which religious employers are entitled to conscience rights under Obamacare. If the case for repealing this unjust intrusion on the free exercise of religion was always strong, in recent weeks it’s gotten stronger still.”

Clapper has come under fire for the testimony he gave before the Senate Intelligence Committee in March, when Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., asked him, “Does the [National Security Agency] collect any type of data at all on millions or hundreds of millions of Americans?”

“Clapper responded unequivocally, “No, sir. Not wittingly. There are cases where they could, inadvertently perhaps, collect — but not wittingly.”

That contradicts the recent revelations about the NSA’s collection of all of Verizon’s U.S. phone records.”

“Taken together, experts say, those revelations show the government has broadly interpreted the Patriot Act provision as enabling it to collect data not just on specific individuals, but on millions of Americans with no suspected terrorist connections. And it shows that the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court  accepted that broad interpretation of the law.

“That they were using this (provision) to do mass collection of data is definitely the biggest surprise,” said Robert Chesney, a top national security lawyer at the University of Texas Law School. “Most people who followed this closely were not aware they were doing this.  We’ve gone from producing records for a particular investigation to the production of all records for a massive pre-collection database. It’s incredibly sweeping.”

What’s interesting in the news today?

Open thread, so don’t be shy.

If you thought the Obama admin and some kangaroo court giving the OK to snoop in 100 million people’s phone records was bad, you’ll love this one. This one involves internet snooping rather than phones. They say it’s only used on foreigners, but I’d hardly trust them since they seem to have constantly changing stories. We’ll see.

But the scandals just keep coming. Next up, the Prism scandal. From TheGuardian

“Two different versions of the PRISM scandal were emerging on Thursday with Silicon Valley executives denying all knowledge of the top secret program that gives the National Security Agency direct access to the internet giants’ servers.

The eavesdropping program is detailed in the form of PowerPoint slides in a leaked NSA document, seen and authenticated by the Guardian, which states that it is based on “legally-compelled collection” but operates with the “assistance of communications providers in the US.”

Each of the 41 slides in the document displays prominently the corporate logos of the tech companies claimed to be taking part in PRISM. However, senior executives from the internet companies expressed surprise and shock and insisted that no direct access to servers had been offered to any government agency.

The top-secret NSA briefing presentation set out details of the PRISM program, which it said granted access to records such as emails, chat conversations, voice calls, documents and more. The presentation the listed dates when document collection began for each company, and said PRISM enabled “direct access from the servers of these US service providers: Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Facebook, Paltalk, AOL, Skype, YouTube, Apple”.

Executives at the companies are saying if it took place, it was without their knowledge.

“Firsthand experience with these systems, and horror at their capabilities, is what drove a career intelligence officer to provide PowerPoint slides about PRISM and supporting materials to The Washington Post in order to expose what he believes to be a gross intrusion on privacy. “They quite literally can watch your ideas form as you type,” the officer said.”

When it comes to the phone scandal, Obama has even lost the NYTimes

“Within hours of the disclosure that federal authorities routinely collect data on phone calls Americans make, regardless of whether they have any bearing on a counterterrorism investigation, the Obama administration issued the same platitude it has offered every time President Obama has been caught overreaching in the use of his powers: Terrorists are a real menace and you should just trust us to deal with them because we have internal mechanisms (that we are not going to tell you about) to make sure we do not violate your rights.

Those reassurances have never been persuasive — whether on secret warrants to scoop up a news agency’s phone records or secret orders to kill an American suspected of terrorism — especially coming from a president who once promised transparency and accountability.

The administration has now lost all credibility on this issue. Mr. Obama is proving the truism that the executive branch will use any power it is given and very likely abuse it. That is one reason we have long argued that the Patriot Act, enacted in the heat of fear after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks by members of Congress who mostly had not even read it, was reckless in its assignment of unnecessary and overbroad surveillance powers.”

Update, 5:13 p.m.: Clapper tells the National Journal, “What I said was, the NSA does not voyeuristically pore through U.S. citizens’ e-mails. I stand by that.” Except … that’s not what he said. ”

“A Washington IRS attorney named Carter Hull closely oversaw the targeting of  conservative nonprofit groups and suggested questions that IRS employees could ask  of conservative and Tea Party groups applying for tax-exempt nonprofit status,  according to interviews that two IRS employees  gave with congressional investigators.

“I was essentially a front person, because I had no autonomy or no authority  to act on [applications] without Carter Hull’s influence or input,” said  Elizabeth Hofacre, an employee of the  Cincinnati IRS office, according to a new report in the Wall Street Journal.”

“IRS attorney Hull sent Hofacre additional information request letters [pdf] that he’d already sent to two tea party  groups and instructed her to use them as a “foundation to prepare and review”  cases and prepare her own letters to new applicants.”

Washington, not Cincinnati. But we already knew that, didn’t we?

Oh, and you’ll love this. Mr. Hull seems to be in the process of retiring. How convenient.  🙄

ObamaCare demands insurers cover Planned Parenthood clinics. That’s called payback. Thank you for the millions you gave me, now here’s yours. From TheWashingtonExaminer

“Most of Planned Parenthood’s 750 health and abortion clinics around the nation will be covered under Obamacare, imposing a new demand on insurers who want to participate in the health care exchanges that will provide insurance coverage to millions of Americans.

While insurers currently cover doctors and health facilities in their networks, Obamacare demands that they also cover at least 20 percent of “essential community providers” in their coverage area, including Planned Parenthood, AIDS clinics, pain management centers and even alternative medicine providers.

“We’ve never covered these sorts of things,” a Wisconsin insurance provider told Secrets. Insurers said that they were just figuring out the new requirement and haven’t decided if it will raise prices. Conservative providers, however, are wary of covering Planned Parenthood.”

The gay Washington  Blade newspaper carried the front-page headline “U.S. Promoting LGBT Rights  Abroad.” Reporter Michael Lavers touted “The first training as part of a  USAID-backed public-private partnership designed to promote LGBT rights around  the world” would happen in Colombia May 30 to June 2.

The  program, which was coordinated by the Gay and Lesbian Victory Institute and the Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice, was the first to take place as part of the USAID-backed “LGBT Global Development Partnership” that will contribute $11 million over the next four years to advocacy groups in neighboring Ecuador and other developing countries.”

What’s interesting in the news today?

Once again the influence this guy wields is baffling. From CNSNews

“Mikey Weinstein, president of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, called the Pentagon, demanding the painting’s removal, according to a posting from the organization on Huffington Post that was headlined, “The Pentagon Most Certainly is Listening to Mikey Weinstein.”

“Mikey gave the Air Force an hour to take action,” the Huffington Post piece by Chris Rodda, senior research director for the Military Religious Freedom Foundation and author of the book “Liars for Jesus,” said Friday.”

Meanwhile, the military continues it’s assault on soldiers who have the nerve to support traditional values. From FoxNews

“An Army master sergeant was punished after he hosted a promotion party and served Chick-fil-A sandwiches in honor of the Defense of Marriage Act.”

“The unidentified soldier was investigated, reprimanded, threatened with judicial action and given a bad efficiency report, according to the Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty.

“They say he is no longer a team player and was not performing up to standards,” Chaplain Alliance Executive Director Ron Crews told Fox News. “This is just one little example of a case of a soldier just wanting to express his views and now he’s been jumped on by the military.”

The soldier’s story was included in a letter to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights documenting concerns about attacks on religious liberty within the Armed Services.”

Mikey Weinstein and his PC stupidity isn’t the only problem.

“The FBI has censored and modified hundreds of pages of materials to satisfy  Muslim critics, including a change that was made because an agency “expert”  insisted the Quran “is the revealed word of God.”

The details come from Judicial Watch, which obtained documentation of  the hundreds of pages of FBI memos, training documents and other paperwork that  the agency purged on the demands of Muslims.”

And the Obama admin is clearly out of synch with the public on this. They can scrub the info to make muslim groups happy, and they can pretend there’s not an issue, but American’s of both parties know better. From InvestorsBusinessDaily

They can ignore the obvious for PC reasons, but most people see thru it.

The good news is the experts expect the unemployment rate to drop. But that will only be because benefits are running out, and the unemployed will instead join the millions of uncounted jobless folks. And as always, they’ll manipulate them if they have too in order to do just that. Again. Still.

But as Congress weighs a media shield law in response to the Associated Press/Justice Department subpoena scandal, the question is gaining an urgency that lawmakers are finding hard to ignore as they turn to writing the bill.

Speaking to reporters Tuesday, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., took on the issue—and stumbled.

“Who is a journalist is a question we need to ask ourselves,” he said. “Is any blogger out there saying anything—do they deserve First Amendment protection? These are the issues of our times.”

Last I checked there Senator, media or not, all citizens have First Amendment Rights. Well, unless you’re a Republican trying to get tax exempt status from the IRS. But what makes him think they should decide what’s media and what’s not? If someone runs afoul of what’s legal, or says something that may be slanderous, we already have laws for that.

What’s interesting in the news today?

We have a bunch today, so I’ll try to be brief. Some are videos, so you can hear and see it for yourself.

Out of all the testimony I’ve seen, this one is my favorite. It’s about time someone calls these partisan hacks out for their behavior and enabling of clear violations of the law. And these illegal acts for partisan reasons have had a chilling effect on free speech, and have led to crimes against people’s homes and businesses for nothing more than supporting traditional marriage.

Next up, what the IRS did to an Iowa pro-life group. You will find what she has to say extremely disturbing.

“It is likely that someone at the Internal Revenue Service illegally leaked  confidential donor information showing a contribution from Mitt  Romney’s political action committee to the National  Organization for Marriage, says the group.”

“The dispute stems from a March 30 post on the pro-gay Human Rights Campaign’s  (HRC) website, which boasted that it had obtained documents revealing that Mitt Romney “donated $10,000 to the National  Organization for Marriage [NOM] in 2008 …””

Meanwhile, other groups that are certainly questionable continued to have expedited service from the IRS and meetings with the White House to help move things along.  From WND

“Cutter insists that Shulman was simply meeting about implementation of ObamaCare — and in fairness, one of her responsibilities was managing communications strategy for the unpopular law.  But as everyone knows, Stephanie Cutter’s expertise is not primarily in the policy area; it is in the realm of politics: Political strategy and communications.  She has been described by the Daily Beast as a partisan “pit bull.”  Her job isn’t the nuts and bolts of governing.  She is a political fixer.  That’s why she was a Deputy Campaign manager for the President’s re-election.

Given that’s the case, it’s far from clear why she would have been in meetings with Doug Shulman at all.  The whole point of the IRS’ supposed “independence” is to insulate the agency from the influence and machinations of people exactly like Stephanie Cutter.

Wilkins, and both of his deputies. The chief counsel is one of just two political appointments at the IRS made by the president.”

Paul Ryan got some cheers from the audience for his rebuttal of McDermott. Despite his insistence that the Bush admin did this to liberal groups, he and Democrats offered no examples and called no witnesses.

Here’s an update on the Ft. Hood shooting trial. Like I said yesterday, it’s getting really tough to sell the “work-place violence” lie. This was terrorism. The suspect has again admitted this publicly. Those involved deserve the proper designation and the benefits they have coming. Benefits the Obama admin has denied them because they don’t want to admit to the suspects motivations for PC reasons. From Newser.com

Witnesses said the gunman fired rapidly, pausing only to reload, even shooting at some soldiers as they hid under desks and fled the building.”
