In 1883 the first baseball game under electric lights was played in Fort Wayne, Indiana. 

In 1886 Grover Cleveland became the second U.S. president to get married while in office. He was the first to have a wedding in the White House.

In 1924 all American Indians were granted U.S. citizenship by the U.S. Congress. 

And in 1953 Elizabeth was crowned queen of England at Westminster Abbey.

On this day in 1859, in London, Big Ben went into operation. 

In 1889 more than 2,200 people died after the South Fork Dam collapsed in Johnstown, PA. 

In 1909 the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) held its first conference. 

In 1955 the U.S. Supreme Court ordered that all states must end racial segregation “with all deliberate speed.”

And in 1962 Adolf Eichmann was hanged in Israel. Eichmann was a Gestapo official and was executed for his actions in the Nazi Holocaust.

In 1953 Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay became first men to reach the top of Mount Everest.  

And in 1978 postage stamps were raised from 13 cents to 15 cents.

In 1859 Charles Gounod’s “Ave Maria” was performed by Madame Caroline Miolan-Carvalho for the first time in public. 

In 1863 Bushwackers led by Captain William Marchbanks attacked a U.S. Federal militia party in Nevada, Missouri.  

In 1967 California Governor Ronald Reagan greeted Charles M. Schulz at the state capitol in observance of the legislature-proclaimed “Charles Schulz Day.” 

And in 1994 the four men convicted of bombing the New York’s World Trade Center were each sentenced to 240 years in prison.

In 1934 the notorious Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were ambushed and killed by Texas Rangers.

And in 1960 Israel announced the capture of Nazi Adolf Eichmann in Argentina.
