On this day in 1628 the Massachusetts colony was founded by Englishmen.

In 1687 French explorer La Salle was murdered by his own men while searching for the mouth of the Mississippi River, in the Gulf of Mexico. 

In 1831 the first bank robbery in America was reported. The City Bank of New York City lost $245,000 in the robbery.

In 1903 the U.S. Senate ratified the Cuban treaty, gaining naval bases in Guantanamo and Bahia Honda.

And in another bad day on this date for a French explorer, in 1905 S. de Segonzac was taken prisoner by Moroccans.

In 1908 the state of Maryland barred Christian Scientists from practicing without medical diplomas.

And in 1918, Congress approved Daylight-Saving Time.

And in 1945 – 1,250 U.S. bombers attacked Berlin.

On this day in 461 Bishop Patrick, St. Patrick, died in Saul. Ireland celebrates this day in his honor.

In 1756 St. Patrick’s Day was celebrated in New York City for the first time. The event took place at the Crown and Thistle Tavern.

In 1910 The Camp Fire Girls organization was founded by Luther and Charlotte Gulick. 

In 1942 Douglas MacArthur became the Supreme Commander of the Allied forces in the Southwestern Pacific.

And in 1973 the first American prisoners of war (POWs) were released from the “Hanoi Hilton” in Hanoi, North Vietnam.

On this day in 44 BC Roman Emperor Julius Caesar was assassinated by high ranking Roman Senators. The day is known as the “Ides of March.”

In 1493 Christopher Columbus returned to Spain after his first New World voyage.

In 1778, in command of two frigates, the Frenchman la Perouse sailed east from Botany Bay for the last lap of his voyage around the world. 

In 1892 New York State unveiled the new automatic ballot voting machine. 

In 1937, in Chicago, IL, the first blood bank to preserve blood for transfusion by refrigeration was established at the Cook County Hospital.

And in 1977 the U.S. House of Representatives began a 90-day test to determine the feasibility of showing its sessions on television.

In 1794 Eli Whitney received a patent for his cotton gin.

In 1900 U.S. currency went on the gold standard with the ratification of the Gold Standard Act. 

And in 1964 a Dallas jury found Jack Ruby guilty of the murder of Lee Harvey Oswald.

In 1781 Sir William Herschel discovered the planet Uranus.

In 1868 the U.S. Senate began the impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson.

In 1918 women were scheduled to march in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in New York due to a shortage of men due to wartime. 

In 1930 it was announced that the planet Pluto had been discovered by scientist Clyde Tombaugh at the Lowell Observatory.

And in 1951 the comic strip “Dennis the Menace” appeared for the first time in newspapers across the country.

And in 1912 the Girl Scout organization was founded. The original name was Girl Guides.

In 1865 Union General William Sherman and his forces occupied Fayetteville, NC. 

In 1888 the “Blizzard of ’88” began along the U.S. Atlantic Seaboard shutting down communication and transportation lines. More than 400 people died.(March 11-14)

And in 1969 Levi-Strauss started selling bell-bottomed jeans.

In 1785 Thomas Jefferson was appointed minister to France. He succeeded Benjamin Franklin. 

In 1848 the U.S. Senate ratified the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the war with Mexico. 

In 1924 the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a New York state law forbidding late-night work for women. 

And in 1969 James Earl Ray pled guilty in Memphis, TN, to the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.

And in 1965 the U.S. landed about 3,500 Marines in South Vietnam. They were the first U.S. combat troops to land in Vietnam.
