Nj, I have to say I am amazed at how shallow Michelle Obama sounds. I am not surprised that she sees everything through the eyes of being black and oppressed, since that was clear when she was in office.
I heard that many blacks did not learn to swim due to not being allowed in pools by white people. I am surprised she didn’t use this excuse of not being able to swim. As it is, lots of women avoid swimming in a pool because of hair issues. Or vanity period.
Sadly, if you left off the black/oppression, there is much to learn about differences in culture and race. Caucasians who adopt black children have to learn how to care for hair that is probably much different than their own. There is just so much we can learn from each other if we drop the chips off our shoulders.
I’ve used google translate in class — Spanish, Kurdish, Arabic, German, Russian, etc. In no way did that indicate the students were “illegal”. Its actually quite difficult to register a student without proper documentation in Canada (far easier in the US)
Students staying home from school because of ICE does not indicate they were illegal. As a parent and teacher, I would have kept my child home from school if I knew ICE was coming. There’s no need for children to see armed thugs in their classroom dragging out children. And given the rate of errors by ICE there’s no need to risk your children over one day of school. 15% kept their children home out of fear not because they were illegal.
Communities in Canada regularly raise flags of ethnic minorities at city hall. My city has raised the flags of Ukraine, Eritrea, Somalia, LGBQT, Tibet, etc. For the most part, its vote pandering.
Why anyone would interrupt the occasion is beyond me. If you don’t like the flag being raised; don’t go to the flag raising, protest across the street, write a letter, complain to your local councillor, etc. But if you are going to interrupt, you will be asked to leave. No need for rude behaviour

I should mention that even if you deport every single illegal migrant, the prices will still not go down. The migrant is not responsible for the increased cost of housing, increased health costs, etc. It’s the vast concentration of wealth at the top and the power this gives them. He knows full well that private equity firms (he used to work for them) are buying up housing stock, creating oligopolies and driving up rent. Monopolies and oligopolies informed by algorithms and apps increase and manipulate prices to extract the maximum amount of profit. Meanwhile the political leadership funded by those corporations tells you to blame the migrants. Classic scapegoating.

For me both Canada and the US are in a similar “state”. There are important differences — health care, leadership, etc However, the general state is quite similar — large corporate concentration of power, corporate capture of the state and the regulatory bodies, etc. It’s a bit more obvious in the US but the same is happening here. Meanwhile the middle class is slowly disappearing as housing becomes unavoidable and savings impossible. The only thing preventing a full meltdown of the middle class is generational wealth and ironically property ownership.
As for immigration, I’m not sure if I mentioned it but I do think Trudeau and the Liberals blew it. Normally, Canada would take in a total of 200k a year but post covid, they increased it to over 400k and that’s not including temporary workers. The previous Conservative party had expanded the program beyond farm workers and nannies to include service and retail. A huge mistake that is only now starting to be corrected. One can admit to these issues without resorting to anti-migrant rhetoric and endorsement of unnecessary force.
NJ – I’ve seen videos of ICE shooting a priest in the face and a woman in the back, ICE using vehicles to ram other cars, pepper spraying people taking videos (and never showing ID), people dragged out of cars, buses, etc while their children watched, ICE broke up a kids Halloween parade, ziptied children together in their pajamas, etc. This is what I recall watching over the last few months. I’ve read stories of ICE going into schools to arrest aides and parents. This tracks with AJ’s article mentioning ICE going into Charlotte schools. All of this is done by men with masks presenting no ID and then these images and video are broadcasted on the internet. I don’t actually search for this; the algorithm brings it to my news feed. Obviously I’m not the only one who sees this, its available and seen by millions throughout the world — this is the image of the US to the rest of us.
