  1. Let Mike Lee and Jonathon Turley explain to you why DC doesn’t deserve statehood. That’s not how this works, except to power hungry Dems looking to pick up seats.

And if they follow precedent, they would pick up additional seats in Maryland, as that’s where DC should return.

“Sen. Mike Lee suggested that D.C. can gain the same benefits of states by returning to Maryland.

I agree. I testified five times in the House and Senate for such retrocession.

It is, and always has been, the best option for D.C.”

“🧵 1/ If the residents of DC want to be part of a state, the solution is *not* DC statehood

Any solution should involve reverting land ceded by Maryland for the creation of DC—excepting only a narrow corridor encompassing the White House, Capitol, & Supreme Court—to Maryland”

“2/ Let’s start with some historical context

DC was established by Congress under the Residence Act of 1790, allowing President George Washington to select a site for the federal capital along the Potomac River, not exceeding 10 miles square (100 square miles)”

    —-

“3/ Land was ceded by both Maryland (about 69 square miles) and Virginia (about 31 square miles) to form this diamond-shaped district that we now call DC”

    —-

“4/ The cessions were formalized; Virginia transferred its portion in 1790, and Maryland followed in 1791

This included areas like Georgetown (from MD) and Alexandria (from VA)”

    —–

“5/ By the 1840s, many residents in the Virginia portion of DC felt neglected by Congress, faced economic stagnation, and believed slavery would soon be abolished in DC”

    —-

“6/ In 1846, Congress passed legislation retroceding the Virginia portion—now Arlington County and the City of Alexandria—back to Virginia

President James K. Polk signed it into law”

    —-

“7/ That law reduced DC from 100 square miles to about 68, establishing retrocession as a viable, constitutional path

Virginia’s land was returned without issue, and it thrives today as part of Virginia, not DC”

“8/ In spite of that precedent, some argue that DC should now become a state

But DC alone (rather than as part of Maryland) doesn’t meet the criteria we’ve historically applied to statehood

Although the Constitution doesn’t specify minimum population or geographic size, our states have been admitted as territories with balanced economies—agriculture, industry, and diverse resources

We have *never* admitted a state that consists of just a single, geographically compact, urban enclave—whether heavily dependent on the federal government (as DC is) or otherwise”

    —-

“9/ DC lacks anything close to the industries, natural resources, opportunities for growth, and amenities found in literally every other state

It’s just a city—one city—and therefore can’t be accorded the status of a sovereign state using the time-honored criteria”

    —-

“10/ More importantly, the Founders quite intentionally created DC as a *neutral* federal district to serve as the seat of the U.S. government under Article I, Section 8

They did so specifically to prevent any one state from wielding undue influence over the national government”

    —-

“11/ Making DC a state would subject the seat of the U.S. government to a state, entangling the capital city in that state’s politics

It’s not about partisanship—it’s about preserving the constitutional design and preventing our nation’s capital from becoming subject to one state”

    —-

“12/ To give DC residents representation in Congress, we could instead follow the Virginia precedent: Retrocede most of DC to Maryland, excepting a small corridor—just a few blocks stretching from the White House to the Capitol and the Supreme Court”

    —-

“13/ This small federal enclave would remain under congressional control—allowing the centers of power in Washington to remain under exclusively federal control—while the rest of DC’s residents would gain full voting rights and representation as Marylanders”

    —-

“14/ This solution would give DC residents what they deserve—state-level representation—without upending the Constitution or creating an anomalous micro-state

This approach would be practical, historical, and fair”

“15/ Maryland ceded the land that’s now DC at the dawn of our constitutional republic; it can absorb it back again, just as Virginia absorbed its previously ceded territory in the 1940s”

    —-

“16/ Let’s prioritize the Founders’ vision over political power grabs

DC should either remain a federal district or revert back to Maryland—but it’s not a state, and shouldn’t be considered for statehood (unless it’s to be part of Maryland again)”

“The Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, John Ratcliffe:

@SenAdamSchiff attempted to overthrow the sitting president of the United States, @realDonaldTrump—not once, not twice but three times.

Sworn testimony from the Inspector General will confirm that then–CIA Director Gina Haspel planted CIA analyst Eric Ciaramella, with whom Adam Schiff conspired to take down the duly elected president of the United States.

For years—right up to January 20, 2025—the intelligence community had protected Adam Schiff. Now, the reckoning begins.”

“John Solomon summarizes his new bombshell that James Comey was leaking classified information to the New York Times 💧

He also notes that for classified information, the statute of limitations has a provision that extends the time period from 5 years to 10 years if it was “willing and knowing.” Obviously they knew what they were doing.

Notice a pattern here? Schiff (Congress) leaking to the media. Comey (FBI) leaking to the media… all coordinated.

Solomon also notes that tomorrow he will be releasing documents that show how often the FBI was blocked from “trying to investigate the Hillary Clinton corruption at the Clinton Foundation.” 👀”

  9. Sure a return to Maryland is one solution, the other is statehood. The current lack of democracy is probably not acceptable to the residents. Its strange that of all the democracies in the world, only the US has issues with the governance of its capital.

From my American history, I only remember the Northwest Ordinance having any rules on statehood and population seems to be the only real requirement.

Historical precedent doesn’t appear consistent — even the population requirement was held up in New Mexico and Arizona as Congress was not impressed with the predominance of Hispanics and Natives. New Mexico promised a TB cure to import more whites and was given statehood.

Meanwhile Vermont separated on its own as did West Virginia, Texas was annexed. Despite being a bunch of islands in the middle of the Pacific, Hawaii became a state and Alaska despite being an exclave also became a state. There’s no real hard set rules — North and South Dakota were separated to create four Republicans Senators instead of two. History appears to be repeating itself.

Statehood appears to be like redistricting; dependent on political expediency. When Texas does it, no problem but when California does it…….

  10. Whether it’s a famine or not; its still genocide and ethnic cleansing

I’m done discussing the pecularities of how much food is enough, how much is let it, etc. Shells fall, people die and nothing is being done. Its genocide. As an adult I went from favouring Israel, to a two-state solution to favoring Palestine and calling it ethnic cleasing. I followed the evidence and changed my mind

  11. Rolling out the National Guard and other agencies to chase a non-existent crisis seems like a farce if it was such a totalitarian playbook.

I saw a few videos of bored ATF agents conducting traffic stops near Howard Univ (but not Georgetown,…..) What a waste of manpower. And then five heavily armed nonidentified law agents wandering through a neighbourhood asking people on a porch for their IDs. Where’s the NRA and the Second Ammendment people…..

Accusations often sound like confessions. When Republicans discredit the crime stats, one wonders about the stats they tout. They say zero illegal crossings but in reality its at least 10 000. (Of course, one may ask if that means they are simply not capturing people like they did before or there’s less people crossing because the economy is bad). Then again, should we trust any stats released by the Trump administration …….

  13. NJ — Canada along with a few other nations has tried air drops of food to bypass Israel border controls and naval blockade. I’m not sure how successful they were. Some NGOs have tried to bring food by boat but Israel has prevented it.

Israel controls the food brought in by trucks and has preferred to work with the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation; a new US-Israeli group which is replacing the more neutral UN groups and Palestinian groups. Even this group has complained that the food is not enough and the distribution points have come under attack by Israel.
