There’s a lot of drama here over a 10-12 year old incident as opposed to focusing on the present. It’s as if the right wing media wants a distraction. Matt Walsh pointed out that Trump supporters should be wary of accusations as Republicans have done this before (Benghazi, email) with no follow up.
Meanwhile, the news is bad job numbers, increased cost of living and always more on Epstein.
And then the Smithsonian takes Trump’s name from the list of impeachments — since when is impeachment not political?? It was in the case of Johnson and Clinton (Nixon was a different beast). Nothing like ignoring or rewriting history.
This administration has a habit of announcing things that don’t exists especially trade deals so I have developed a healthy scepticism. Rubio says Israel agreed to concessions but Hamas rejected it because of France’s pending recognition. Of course, we’ll never know exactly what took place but we’re supposed to take the administration’s word for it.
In any case, Macron has been pushing for the recognition of Palestine since at least this spring. He’s been waiting for an upcoming UN conference which has been postponed several times. He’s also been trying to get other western leaders on side — and that seems to be working.
Interestingly, Trump seems to have given Starmer the opening he needed. When asked about Palestine statehood in Scotland recently, Trump said he didn’t have a position on it. Starmer under a lot of pressure from the Labour base took this as opening and has now supported Macron and Palestine.
Carney has also come onside and is waiting for this September conference. Trump was harder on Canada than on the UK. For some reason, Canada’s recognition of Palestine will make it harder to achieve a trade deal?? Is Israel dictating US trade policy??
The left in the US is very small and thus not capable of many dastardly deeds. (using my definition of left)

By the rise of populists right, the “deep state” was no longer not just the “state” as it was but in fact a deep rooted conspiracy of powerful elites pulling the strings. The interesting thing about this idea is that to a certain extent they have a point — by the 2010s it was obvious power was becoming increasingly centralised and in the shadows.
The Epstein files became central to many deep state conspiracy theorists. The missing minute of tape, Maxwell’s connection to Mossad, the sweet heart deal given to Epstein (by Acosta who later became Trump’s first sec’y of labour) etc. It’s the gift that keeps giving. The DOJ team that interviewed Maxwell included Trump’s former criminal lawyer and now Maxwell has been transferred to Texas. More fodder for the conspiracy theorists.
As for the “woke”, the social focus by left of centre groups destroyed the centre left. They stopped talking about economic issues and focus on social issues. They gave their strongest issue to the neoliberals and were satisfied by the crumbs of LGBQT and DEI. The capture of the centre left in the economic realm by neoliberals killed Labour, the US Democratic Party, the SDP in Germany and parties elsewhere.
Around here, we have a statue of limitations. As long as they’re within it, their crimes, and they are crimes, are fair game for prosecutors.

The only peace deals I am aware of is that between Congo/ Rwanda, and Thailand/ Cambodia. But if that ends up saving lives and relieving the violence against Christians, I am indeed really grateful for them.

I always try to take a wait and see approach in matters of economy, but we are seeing a slight uptick in unemployment for June.

It was fairly accurate and described the actual situation in most western governments from the 1970s onward.
By the rise of populists right, the “deep state” was no longer not just the “state” as it was but in fact a deep rooted conspiracy of powerful elites pulling the strings. The interesting thing about this idea is that to a certain extent they have a point — by the 2010s it was obvious power was becoming increasingly centralised and in the shadows.
The Epstein files became central to many deep state conspiracy theorists. The missing minute of tape, Maxwell’s connection to Mossad, the sweet heart deal given to Epstein (by Acosta who later became Trump’s first sec’y of labour) etc. It’s the gift that keeps giving. The DOJ team that interviewed Maxwell included Trump’s former criminal lawyer and now Maxwell has been transferred to Texas. More fodder for the conspiracy theorists.
As for the “woke”, the social focus by left of centre groups destroyed the centre left. They stopped talking about economic issues and focus on social issues. They gave their strongest issue to the neoliberals and were satisfied by the crumbs of LGBQT and DEI. The capture of the centre left in the economic realm by neoliberals killed Labour, the US Democratic Party, the SDP in Germany and parties elsewhere.

The only peace deals I am aware of is that between Congo/ Rwanda, and Thailand/ Cambodia. But if that ends up saving lives and relieving the violence against Christians, I am indeed really grateful for them.
Meanwhile we are still actively funding the wars that the President vowed to stop.
This administration is more openly dictatorial, lawless and dishonest than any I can remember. So I will wait to see what its “accomplishments” really turn out to be, while its damages to the country are mounting.

I always try to take a wait and see approach in matters of economy, but we are seeing a slight uptick in unemployment for June.
“There were more part-time workers and a jump in the number of people experiencing long bouts of unemployment. The median duration of unemployment increased to 10.2 weeks from 10.1 weeks in June.
“One gets the sense that due to trade and immigration policy the domestic economy and labor market are paying a price,” said Joseph Brusuelas, chief economist at RSM US. “Stagflation is the best description of the domestic economy as we enter the second half of the year.”

More on the economic front: In a classic ‘shoot the messenger’ knee-jerk response, President Trump has apparently fired the Commissioner of Labor Statistics for our poor economic performance and claiming the numbers were rigged. She was confirmed to her position in January 2024 in a bipartisan vote of 86-8, which included then votes from senators JD Vance and Marco Rubio.
“President Donald Trump on Friday lashed out at the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and said he will fire its labor statistics chief after the U.S. economy added fewer jobs than expected in July and large downward revisions were made in the prior two months, which suggests the economy and labor market are weaker than previously believed.
The BLS reported on Friday that 74,000 jobs were added in July, well below the 110,000 estimate of economists polled by LSEG. The report also revised job growth in May and June downward. May’s gains were pared back by 125,000 to just 19,000 jobs created, while the June figures were revised down by 133,000 to just 14,000 jobs added that month.
