  1. Happy Anniversary, AJ and Cheryl!

We have gotten a lot of rain and some wind from Helene, but it’s not been too bad. There are lots of trees around here so power lines are often vulnerable. I see some neighbors up the road have trucks cutting up a couple of large trees that have fallen in inconvenient places. But so far power is still fine. I thank the Lord we have had no tornadoes.

  2. I am listening to a biography about Paul, the Apostle, by N. T. Wright. It is really good, and I recommend it to anyone who likes such things.

The book is timely since my Sunday school class is going through the book of Acts, and I recently listened to a Biblical fiction novel from the point of view of Paul’s sister.

On another subject, since I just felt a tiny insect crawling on me, we have ants inside . . . they just want to escape the flooded soil outside. Can’t blame them (but squished it anyways). I still feel a pang of guilt for smashing a tiny creature God made that was inconvenient to me.

  3. Good to hear Debra. I was thinking about you this morning wondering how bad it may have gotten. I think of our dear Chas and how he loved Asheville. Someone reported Blowing Rock was hard hit as well. 😢

  4. Hey Janice, N. T. Wright’s “new perspective on Paul” (NPP) is extremely controversial. I’ve heard that he can be good on some things, but “Wright” and “Paul” in the same sentence require a caution.

  5. I’ve not read Wright either but it was much discussed (with the same cautions Cheryl mentioned) in our church when it was the ‘popular’ book to read a few years ago.

Battling the dreaded annual chore of cleaning out the HEAVY metal heater return register and attached undercarriage screen. I hate doing this every year but can’t use the heater with any peace of mind without cleaning it all out first.

Had to take a spin to Home Depot for some “Brasso” metal cleaner.

  6. Thanks for the caution on the book. It was on the disc I get from the Georgia Library of Congress through the Center for the Visually Impaired. We all get what someone in the library picks out according to a few categories we checked such as Christian nonfiction.

I am not very far into the book. I started yesterday thinking Art would prefer it over a Christian fiction romance. It is also related to something we are studying in Sunday school. It is easy enough for me to stop listening if it gets too far out there. I think our son has seen N T Wright speak at a conference, too, so I can ask him about his thoughts, too.

I finished a Christian fiction, What Lies Within, by Karen Ball. I really liked it and want to “read” more in that series.

  7. Janice I will look up that author! I read a book M had recommended by Karen Barnett “Where Trees touch the Sky” and am now on a second book of hers. She is a delightful writer and has a National Park series of which these are a part.

  8. I recently ordered “Living with Purpose in a Polarizing World – Guidance from Biblical Narratives” but haven’t really started it so have no idea how good it is, I’m not familiar with the authors; so I can’t really “vouch” for it, but found the title and general description interesting enough to try. Includes chapters on Abraham, Joseph, Moses, Joshua, Ruth, David, Esther, Job, Daniel, Peter, Paul and, of course, Jesus.

It did come with positive review notes from an array of Christian reviewers, including this one: “… an important and timely book for Christians who want to be salt and light in the divisive times we live in…” So we’ll see on that one.

Also pursuing (again) “Tears and Tossings: Hope in the Waves of Life” by Sarah Walton which I dip into periodically and find quite helpful and encouraging in times of stress.

  9. The book I am “reading” is probably an older and longer book, Paul: A Biography, by N T Wright. Not sure how much of the new controversial material is in this book. So far it is what I would expect to read about Paul, but very well written and thoroughly engaging.

  10. I think Wright’s position is referred to as the “New Perspective on Paul.”

OK so I took Abby out, armed with cheese treats, for another training to get into the car.

    Abby no go.

She did put her paws up to eat the cheese treats of the paper towel on the seat, so for now I’m just praising her for that, back to one step at a time. Sigh.

Having dinner out with friends who also are struggling with their new dog Daisy (who has separation anxiety) and they had a bad day at training today.

  11. Good morning all. A beautiful day here. Not sure we will be making it to church this morning, my dad and I. But husband will drive the younger two grandchildren and one of our children, son out law will drive the older two grandchildren and the other one of ours. Daughter certainly has made this much more complicated than she needed to, even for a divorce.

The visit is going great. Fortunately the great outdoors beckons.

  12. Thank you all.

We had a nice dinner out last night with our daughter and Isaac, my son and his fiance, and my granddaughter. We celebrated our 25th, E and I’s 2nd, and my son’s 35th birthday, as well as my granddaughter’ upcoming 14th. We had a nice night. 😁

Then we went to church this morning, Cheryl and I, with upcoming reading, football, and carryout at some point today that we will make the kids go get for us.

    Life is good.

  13. That sounds super nice, AJ. So glad you have such events to enjoy celebrating in one big bash!

Our service and Sunday school seemed about half as large in attendance as usual. It finally made sense when the pastor said quite a few were out helping relatives and friends who had been hit with storm damage.

Everyone in Sunday school was talking about how the storm went east of us and put us in a sideways cup so it went around us and then went north after bending east. I think we almost have survivor’s guilt because others got what we were suppose to get and we were prepared for. The ones who got the hardest hit were unprepared in many cases. So sad.

  14. I received a text about the road closing for transport of the children from old hospital to the new until 7 pm. They waited until after church is my guess because of traffic. Wise on their part. Art and I were on that road earlier and I wondered why it was not appearing any different than normal. Prayer that all will transport without incident!
