I am beyond disgusted with what our state government is doing. Now they are trying to pass a law that says that books cannot be removed because of content and whatever in the schools. Puh-leeze, you don’t see the governor proposing this actually read from the offensive books. Of course not, since there would be an uproar and he would be censored on television. I had a book removed decades ago from our grade school. It was moved to the older student’s section. I don’t believe the book was worthy of taxpayer dollars being used on it at all myself.
I became aware of the book when my 3rd grade daughter said I might want to read it, because all her classmates were talking about it and she thought it was not a good book. I wrote down 10 objections to it, presented it to the principal who then suggested talking to the librarian. I was surprised to learn the librarian was someone who worked in the same place I had, which was over 65 miles away and in an entirely different type of work. She called me later, agreeing the book was, indeed, inappropriate. She thanked me for alerting her.
I was the librarian of a church, so I was aware of how books are often ordered. Those who order books cannot read every book. They rely on blurbs or reviews. This was true in this case.
There are many who really want to influence children in evil. Jesus spoke of millstones. Nothing changed in that regard. We are to be salt and light. That is uncomfortable. Sometimes that means just alerting others to what is really going on in school libraries. The term ‘book banning’ can be used to in a way to discourage parents etc. from doing what is truly right. We must choose our battles carefully. We may each have different battles. We are in a spiritual battle, however, whether we want to see it or not.

They said it was because the authors were either black, Asian, LGBTQ, etc. Content did not matter as long as there were all types of authors represented on the shelves. In their minds it has nothing to do with their readers (this is their justification).
