  1. Happy days of Thanksgiving prep, Wanderers! May it all be joyful and fruitful (is pumpkin a fruit?)!

It’s raining here. Although more leaves have fallen on the cleared lawn of yesterday, I am glad I got the bulk removed so the grass and weeds get a full drink of water.

  2. I have appointments set up for my cataracts to be removed. I was thinking it would be after the holidays, but it will be before. This is bound to interfere with the shopping I need to do and there is even a follow up appointment during our family Christmas. OTOH, it will be nice to have it over with before the worst travel time weather-wise.

Dj, did they offer you the lenses that are tweaked by ultraviolet light? Those are not covered by Medicare or insurance, but mean no glasses needed later for sure. They cost 3,500 for each eye. They also mean several visits to tweak to your own desires. Those sound a little too new for me. I am used to wearing glasses but do think it would be nice to not have to do so. There is no changing to those, so the decision is one I have to make now.

Of course, I just realized I had lab appointments for both me and my husband on the day of the first surgery. 😦 I hate having to change appointments.

Sad about those driving issues, mumsee.

  3. This will be my easiest Thanksgiving in a very long time.

The kids are going to Isaac’s family for the weekend. So Cheryl and I are going to the country club restaurant for a buffet. No cooking, no cleaning. 🦃😁 just us 2. I’m thankful for that.

  4. Kathaleena, the lenses I was offered were the ones to fix my astigmatism and they also would have (they said) keep me out of glasses; those cost $2,000 each out of pocket, so $4,000, which I just couldn’t afford

I also had asked my former eye doctor (before he retired) about those — and also an eye specialist I was seeing — and both of them said sometimes there are complications with those “fancier” lenses so both of them strongly recommended going with the “basic” lens which they said I would be thrilled with (and I am). I pretty much don’t have to wear glasses (but will get a prescription to correct the astigmatism that remains); but I see well enough to pass the drivers test without glasses and the doctor said I can ask the DMV to remove the “corrective lens” restriction from my license if I wanted to.

Reading glasses will be needed either way, I think, but so far that also seems like a very minimal need.

The specialist told me it’s like with anything — the fancier “things” (lenses) tend to come with downsides and more complications.

Sometimes I regret not being able to correct the astigmatism with the fancier lenses, but also don’t need any more complications with my eyes (you may have less-complicated eyes generally than I do) going forward.

Glad you’re getting it done before the holidays though yeah, I understand the unwanted hassles in that! The recovery is pretty fast and you can take care of the decorating/shopping in advance, then keep things simple from there.

  5. Seems like the glasses prescription I will get will provide a little added “boost” to my vision, but otherwise — it seems like I’ll be able to get along without wearing them for many everyday kinds of things.

It’s reminding me of the years when I wore contacts, especially the freedom of not wearing glasses when walking the dog or when it rains or just doing things around the house.

  6. Kathaleena, are those lenses you were offered the “multi-focal” ones? I think those would make me crazy — they had those in contacts, too, where they combine distance and near-vision in one lens? -dj

  7. This rain is so sweet. When you go without it makes it seem an extra special gift from yhe Maker. But we may get rough weather later, and then it will not be sweet like this gentle rain.

I got directions from someone at the cemetery where Chas and Elvera’s gravesite is located. The poinsettias I ordered from Amazon were rolled up in a plastic bag with all air removed. They look so bad but I found online instructions on how to revive them.

  8. I was offered the high price lenses, too, but thankful I did not waste money on them. I was also offered the option that I could have one lens correct for up close and the other for distance but I thought my brain could not handle that. Things coild be worse for me than they are now!😀

Prayers, Kathaleena, that it all goes well for you as it has for Dj. I have the epi-retinal membrane which is like a cateract on the back of the eye which makes vision more of a challenge.

  9. Right, they had contacts like that, one eye close, the other far away — but also they had bi-focal contact lenses. I just wore the distance lenses and used reading glasses which was fine for me.

So far, it appears I can drive fine without any distance help (but I may opt to wear prescription glasses also when I can get them, in another month or two). But I pass the driver’s eye exam (they have those at the eye doctor’s office) without any help now. 🙂 -dj

  10. These are not a bifocal lens. My surgeon is the only one who does those. There is one doctor 65 miles away in a larger city that does them. I, too, decided I would prefer the time-tested ones. I also have astigmatism. I have worn glasses since 3rd grade, as I mentioned before, and to not wear them would seem strange. My mom also had difficulty, at first, with just wearing reading glasses when she needed them.

I did have to laugh when I was asked to read the smallest row of letters I saw. I said I could see no letters-just fuzziness. She decided I needed to take that test with my glasses on.

Eyes are just so precious. It is amazing how deeply complex out bodies are. Scientist just can’t duplicate the various parts. I am grateful for those who do make advances for the human race. I am grateful for the creator who made us fearfully and wonderfully.

  11. Argh. Mosquito is back.

But I checked out that salt gun that NJ recommended and think it might pose more problems and damage than I’m ready for. Plus aiming for mosquitoes which are so small and seem to “dance” as they fly and not land hardly at all would be too challenging.

(Flies are not as common in the house and I have an awesome Amish-made fly swatter that’ll get those.)

Mosquito just flew right into my face (again). I yelled, almost hit my reading glasses off my face again. Argh. We’re making each other mad now.

    GOT HIM.

  12. Snow is slowly melting and the sky is that sweet Colorado blue!!

Daughter is having us over for Thanksgiving…this will be a first that I am not preparing a feast! I am taking pumpkin pie and veggie casserole….

I ran over to Safeway to pick up veggies and pumpkin…so many last minute shoppers!! But everyone was in a festive mood… even that little old white haired who yelled “beep beep” at me as she turned down the aisle I was in!!! Another lady and I scooted our carts close to the shelves even though there more than ample room for the beep beep lady to pass!!😂

  13. Mosquito reserves have been sent in following the first one’s demise. I’m ready.

But I’m getting nowhere on trying to set up a Thanksgiving Day photo that editor says we need for Friday out of our area.

Holiday weeks are like pulling teeth to find news to write about. -dj

  14. Did you all miss me?
I came home with a cold. Don’t even remember yesterday. Haven’t either. Though I did have three bites of toast and promptly lost it
My ear was starting to ache so I began an antibiotic

  16. Yes, I hope you feel better soon, too. And aren’t lonely, too.

I am bringing a wild blueberry pie. I usually do the meal, so it will be strange. It will be nice to see the grands, however, and hopefully the great granddaughter. It will be nice to, hopefully, shop a bit with my daughter, too.
