Burning Man has lost whatever alternative cred it had years ago — like Glastonbury in the UK; rich boomers ruined it.
From the weekend;
Don’t kids yourself, the proud boys are not being jailed for misdemeanours but rather sedition and conspiracy. This means the prosecutor successfully demonstrated a plan to overturn the election by illegal means. The judge giving this particular sentence was Trump appointed. There’s no DC conspiracy. Is sedition not worth 7-15 years?
A lot of instant lawyers on the internet thinking they know Georgia law better than the DA and a judge. Its unfortunate Trump isn’t sharing all his PAC money to help his co-conspirators pay for a lawyer. Perhaps, then, they can argue what’s being argued on twitter. Although all the mud-slinging won’t help in court. Without a lawyer, some might be tempted to flip…..
I believe the terrorism enhancement to increase sentences was added post 9/11. Leftist and libertarians warned the Republicans who passed it. They say an empire is dying when it treats its citizens the same way it treated foreigner conquests. Behaviour does come back to the homeland.
Section 3 of the 14th Amendment has been all over the left side of the internet – Florida won’t be the last attempt to disqualify Trump. Given the amount of foreign money that can be funnelled in an US election – look for the EU, Russia, and China to throw money around to elect Biden (the EU) or Trump (Russia and China). Its going to be a fun year…….
After 55 years on this planet and arguing against neo-cons most of the time, it really annoys me to see they’re actually right this time. Neo-cons love the Project for a New American Century and neo-con economics. PNAC was always b.s. and probably did more harm to America than just sitting on your hands. The blow back from PNAC is easy to see in Africa and the Middle East. However, Ukraine has nothing to do with PNAC. Ukraine is a battle between authoritarianism and European Enlightenment values. Values that produced the current rules based international order, the American Constitution, French Revolution, the EU, modern individualism, etc. Meanwhile Russia advocates cultural nationalism and strong man rules. An ideal that Europe abandoned after two world wars.
It’s interesting to see many Republicans abandon the neo-con foreign policy but maintain neo-con economics. A theory in which economics dominates national life, gov’t intervention is nil, and empathy for the poor faces disapproval.
Sachs calling Ukraine the newest neo con disaster is ironic and hypocritical. It is his “shock therapy” advocated by the Chicago boys (led by Friedman) which created the oligarchs and the current corruption in both Ukraine and Russia. He created the disaster that led to Putin and the rise of neo-fascism. The Czechs ignored Sachs and kept the best social-economic conditions of the post Soviet world.
A negotiated settlement won’t happen until both sides are exhausted. The Ukrainians are in it for the long haul and the Russians now see it as an existential struggle – they bought the propaganda. It seems simple – give up the Donbass and Crimea in exchange for permanent guarantees. The Donbass is a rust belt and Crimea has no fresh water, but Russia also wants the land bridge and that’s no-go for Ukraine (that area is valuable farmland populated almost entirely by Ukrainians). And what type of robust security guarantees? NATO membership? That was the Russian basis for the war. The Ukrainians will accept nothing less – they gave up their nukes for the Budapest Memorandum, and that did nothing.
Ironically, one of the rationales for the Russia invasion – threat of NATO membership – would never have happened; NATO does not accept countries with a border dispute or any disputes. Macedonia had to change its name to North Macedonia in order to join NATO. And now NATO membership is the only way Ukraine will settle for anything short of total liberation.

I wouldn’t be surprised, either, if Biden drops out.
