  1. I just had an opportunity to read the News/Politics comments from the weekend. I have one word for you, Karen, on why some people seem to get permanent disability and others do not: lawyers.

OTHO, not everyone who has a disability are helpless or unable to conduct some business. Some of these people have been in and out of jobs, trying to work and finding they cannot continue for any amount of time. How to help them? I am not talking about those shirking work, but those who have episodes of mental illness. It is made more and more difficult for them to be hired. Eventually, those involved in the system may help the person just get a more steady income (from taxpayers) to avoid all the cost, effort and problems of reapplying over and over again. It is not always easy to discern those faking and/or help those who really do need help.

One young lady crowed when she was fired from a fast food business. She was thrilled she could now go on disability and ‘get a thousand bucks a month.’ The woman she crowed to was a senior citizen still working to supplement her income. What a pity for that young woman to think that is a good way to live. Very sad.

Our children need adults to help them see much better ways to live. They need mentors and heroes that will show them a better way.

  2. I’ve mentioned before the young man I know who was born with a heart condition (basically, half a heart) and couldn’t get disability. He tried to work, but his heart simply could not take the regular 9-5 schedule and employers were unwilling to make allowances. He was finally going to have to go before a judge to prove his case; but his doctors decided enough was enough and gave abundant proof of his very real disability. By the way, to meet the man, you would never know he had a heart condition. He would be quite the athlete if his heart could stand it. I’ve known him since he was a little boy and I remember him as a bit of a trouble maker. Yet, he has been closer to death more times in his short life than most people are in all 70 or 80 years of their existence. Disabilities like missing limbs are easy to see, but most people do not immediately look disabled.

  3. Don’t worry folks. No politician (not even Cruz) wants to retest those currently receiving Social Security Disability. All recipients (be they legitimate, outright frauds, or those who focused on what they couldn’t do rather than what they still could do) have an income for life plus Medicare. In the old days a man with a missing limb really was disabled. Today, many truly disabled people (including those with Downs Syndrome) hold jobs.

For a president to turn the U.S. around, he is going to have to lead people to quit riding in the wagon and help pull it for a while. I am not holding my breath.

The saddest thing is to see the Mexican immigrants. They all come here with a great work ethic. Two generations later, many of their grandchildren have become typical Americans, faking disability of filing fraudulent Worker’s Compensation claims. The U.S. really is an attractive nuisance. We should put up signs at the border: Warning: Lengthy exposure to American culture may destroy your work ethic or cause your grandchildren to become perverts.
