Peter’s Pack of Pickled Pigskin Picks “15- Week 1

Well, fellow Wanderers. It’s time for another season of prognosticating the outcome of college football. Here you go with the first set of ten. Just a reminder of the rules:

  • Predict the winner of the first 9 games, and the winner and final score of the last one. It is the tie breaker.

  • Post your guesses on the blog before the first game, which this week is Thursday evening. So we’ll say before 5:00PM EDT (2:00PM Pacific)

  • Anyone may participate. If you have relatives who are not a regular reader of this blog, you may post their guesses for them.

  • Winner gets to pick the next week’s tie breaker game.

(The numbers refer to preseason rankings.)

Week 1

  1 #2 Texas Christian @ Minnesota

  2 #20 Wisconsin @ #3 Alabama

  3 Lousville @ #6 Auburn

  4 # 4 Baylor @ SMU

  5 Louisiana-Monroe @ #9 Georgia

  6 Virginia @ #13 UCLA

  7 Texas @ #11 Notre Dame

  8 Tennessee-Martin @ #17 Ole Miss

  9 SE Missouri @ #24 Mizzou

10 Tie breaker– Texas San Antonio @ #22 Arizona (Winner and final score)

  3. I do not pretend to understand the game of North American football [It was actually a Canadian invention derived from the British rugger, including the unique shape of the pigskin and the drop-kick; and introduced to the U.S. in 1874 by the rugby team of McGill University (Quebec), who taught their rules to Harvard’s soccer team]; but I have an inclination to enter my purely random choices:
    1. Texas Christian
    2. Alabama
    3. Auburn
    4. Baylor
    5. Louisiana-Monroe
    6. UCLA
    7. Notre Dame
    8. Ole Miss
    9. Mizzou
    10. Texas San Antonio 33-21

  4. Oh, I thought he meant North Dakota. Sorry. I could not vote for them because you had already done so. My carefully selected choices were whatever you and Tychicus did not choose and when you could not agree, I alternated. Kind of sad because I have always liked the idea of Notre Dame and the Irish.

  5. Peter, from your Wikipedia link: “However, what developed into a more rugby-style play and eventually into the football known by current fans had its beginnings in 1874, when McGill (Montreal) visited Harvard to play “The Boston Game” and British rugby.”

  6. Curiously, the Wikipedia article on the history of American Football omits the 1874 McGill-Harvard game, although it recognizes the change between the rules of 1873 and 1875:

The first American football game was played on November 6, 1869 between Rutgers and Princeton. The game was played between two teams of 25 players each, used a round ball, and resembled a combination of rugby and soccer in its rules; the ball could not be picked up or carried, but it could be kicked or batted with the feet, hands, head or sides, with the ultimate goal of advancing it into the opponent’s goal. Rutgers won the game 6-4.[8][9] Collegiate play continued for several years in which matches were played using the rules of the host school. Representatives of Yale, Columbia, Princeton and Rutgers met on October 19, 1873 to create a standard set of rules for all schools to adhere to. Teams were set at 20 players each, and fields of 400 by 250 feet were specified. Harvard abstained from the conference, as they favored a rugby-style game that allowed running with the ball.[9]

An 1875 Harvard-Yale game played under rugby-style rules was observed by two impressed Princeton athletes. These players introduced the sport to Princeton, a feat the Professional Football Researchers Association compared to “selling refrigerators to Eskimos.”[9] Princeton, Harvard, Yale and Columbia then agreed to intercollegiate play using a form of rugby union rules with a modified scoring system.[10] These schools formed the Intercollegiate Football Association, although Yale did not join until 1879. Yale player Walter Camp, now regarded as the “Father of American Football,”[10][11] secured rule changes in 1880 that reduced the size of each team from 15 to 11 players and instituted the snap to replace the chaotic and inconsistent scrum.[10]

  7. Corrected by Roscuro again! But then, I was thinking of the first ever college football game, and she was referring to the first game under the “new” rules, which have changed a lot in the last 140 years. Now, if they could only have a real playoff.

My picks (along with the “smack” AJ wants):
    1. Minnesota. It’s their field and the other team is from Texas. ‘Nuff said.
    2. ‘Bama. Now that I’ve seen the state again, and actually had lunch with a true Southern Belle, I guess I’ll go with the obvious choice in this game, even though I prefer someone else to win the SEC.
    3. Auburn. Hey, on our return trip from Florida we passed through Auburn territory. Didn’t get to Kentucky, though, like we had planned.
    4. Baylor. I know, two teams from Texas. But I prefer Baptist church services over one at a Methodist church. No offense to those Methodists here present.
    5. Georgia. Is there really any doubt on this one?
    6. UCLA. I like the PAC-12, though I like another South team better, obviously.
    7. ND. How did I get into this choice???? Two of my least favorite teams in any sport. Aaah!!! Pick the team that’s not from Texas, I guess.
    8. Ole Miss. Another gimme.
    9. Mizzou. SEMO used to be a Div II team, and is now a mid-major. They are good, but not ready for the big leagues. (Fun Fact: The college is in Rush Limbaugh’s home town.)
10- Arizona 35-10. UTSA is from, you guessed it, Texas. And Tucson is my home town. Arizona is in the PAC-12. Need I say more?

  10. Here goes:

TCU. Not much heard of them in the past. I have no connection to the Ft. worth school (one class), but hope they do well.
Alabama, the Tide will roll over Wisconsin.
Auburn, When in doubt, take the SEC school.
Georgia, this is a “gimme” over La. Munroe.
    Virginia. Wild guess here,
Texas. Another wild guess. But I like coach Charlie Strong. I wish he would come to SC.
    Ole Miss Should be easy.
I have to pick the Mizzou Tigers.
Arizona 21, Texas San Antonio 0.

  12. It looks like Tychicus is our winner. Two games are still going on, but since he and the other 3 tied with 7 games so far picked the same winners in those games, and Tychicus got the closest on the tie breaker, I, as writer of this thread, hereby proclaim Tychicus the first winner of the 2015 Pickled Pigskin Picks.

So, Tychicus, which game is the tie breaker next week? To see the schedule, go here: http://espn.go.com/college-football/schedule/_/group/80/week/2.

  13. I’ll have to admit that I picked Texas with my heart, and not my head. Due to his no-nonsense approach of only taking high-character football players, the Charlie Strong era will take some time to develop into a truly winning program again (if it ever does).

Since UTSA fought Peter’s Arizona team so well these last two years (and since SA is my home town), I choose Kansas State at Texas-San Antonio as the tie-breaker for next weekend.
