  1. Good morning, AJ and all. Been awake for a while. That’s OK. Got in some praying time, some Bible-reading time, and have been enjoying the still after the storm we had last night.

  2. First!

Today’s photos are of killdeer wading and drinking in a pond that has been down the street for several weeks now, rainwater collected in what is supposed to be a farmer’s field. Those stalks are what is left from soybean plants that were underwater for a couple of weeks.

Good morning. Everyone is up early. today. I’m just checking yesterday’s post while ol’ slowpoke is getting ready.
    How do you misinterpret “grumpy”.

  5. Chas, I mean that I posted “First” and then took time to write a note about the photos, and by the time I had done so, someone else had rudely elbowed herself in ahead of me, after tripping over my heels all morning. 😉

  6. Lovely music today, AJ. It served as a perfect backdrop for my Bible reading for today, in Jeremiah 29. In the middle of a dark book, I just love these verses:

8 For thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Let not your prophets and your diviners, that be in the midst of you, deceive you, neither hearken to your dreams which ye cause to be dreamed.

9 For they prophesy falsely unto you in my name: I have not sent them, saith the Lord.

10 For thus saith the Lord, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.

11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

12 Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.

13 And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

  7. My! You have to get up pretty early on a Monday to catch up around here.

Michelle posted on FB last night about the release tomorrow of Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee.
I am not excited about it like everyone else. There has been controversy for several years about the publisher getting her to sign over her rights to the book, then not allowing Monroeville to stage the play in the courthouse. Harper Lee had a stroke a few years back and is is an nursing home. She has a new attorney who suddenly “discovered” this original work. Atticus is a racist and member of the KKK. Jean Louise is much more sophisticated…and the list goes on.

What are your thoughts about the release of this “book” that is supposed to have been the original manuscript from which To Kill a Mockingbird” was gleaned?

  8. I don’t know about that Kim. It appears on one else does either.
I got an e-mail this morning warning women about a hijack scam. People put a piece of paper on the back windshield of a car parked in a public area. And when she starts to back up, she notices it, gets out of the car to get the paper, and someone jumps in and pulls off with her car and the purse she left inside.
If you see some paper – or anything else- after you’ve started your car, drive off a bit before getting it.
This is decades old. I have seen it before. I have never heard of that actually happening, but it makes sense to be alert.

  9. Or look at your car before you get in and get the paper off the windshield first.

And I notice the race to 100 ened this morning before it got there. Must be the heat. Or Cheryl and 6 arrows tripping over each other.

  10. I understand that they don’t do it to men’s cars because a man wouldn’t leave a purse in the car. It isn’t the car, it’s the purse they want. They would have to dump it quickly because women keep their phones in the purse and these new phones can be tracked.

  11. I think the earlier version of that scam was the guy would get into the back seat & hide and then whack her on the head at some point. Or something. I think I saw that on a Law & Order show. Ripped from the headlines.

    🙂

The Harper Lee book is very curious — even the initial one always left so many questions (how could she write such a brilliant novel and then … nothing more?). I found michelle’s comment interesting about how editors at the NYT helped rewrite it, I hadn’t heard that before.

One of the common theories going around for a while was that it was really ghost written by Truman Capote who was a good friend of hers. And the book does have something of his style.

But, yeah, I read a little bit over the weekend about how Atticus was pretty racist in this book which will crush all of “Mockingbird’s” many fans.

Waiting for some water to boil to pour down the shower drain … To see if I can take a shower this morning. What a mess. I tried a hair dissolver that came highly recommended but by last night seemed to have made the drain worse than before. It drained overnight, thankfully, but I won’t be surprised if the hot water just backs up again and I’ll have to find a plumber and figure out how to work from home today. Meanwhile, I need to get to Norma’s memorial service at 10 which is just 3 hours from now …

  12. Good morning! I am at the office so that means I see the great pictures Cheryl took.Very nice composition.

Today is son’s birthday. He is 27. Still hard to believe he can possibly be that old.

We had a nice communion service yesterday. The sanctuary was about half filled so we were all asked to move up toward the front. Our church seems to get a lot of people in transition. They are in town for a few years to do study at Emory or some other college and then move on. It makes for an interesting congregation. Also, with the Baptist retirement community nearby, we get older people who have just moved in there from other locales.

My friend in CA has been a nanny for a family with a mom and pop who are both doctors. The children are all grown up now so she just had her last day with them. She has been carting them to activities for the past few years as she wound down her caring for them. She did not have children of her own, but I think she may feel a bit of an empty nest since she is finished with their care.

  13. Donna, have you tried a plunger and an auger along with boiling hot water mixed with bleach? Those are what work for me.You might have to vary the order of what you do, but if you keep at it, you should resolve the issue unless it is clogged up out in the yard.

  15. Yes, lots of plunging the last 24 hours, along with the hair dissolver from Home Depot (which was supposed to work miracles according to dozens of online rave reviews), boiling water … No bleach because they said not to mix other chemicals when using the one product, for obvious reasons.

After pouring the latest pot of boiling water down the drain (I left the last treatment of hair dissolver in the drain overnight as recommended), it still seems stuck, unfortunately. I’ll call my neighbor to see if they’ve used a plumber recently, last time we both made use of a crew that did plumbing on the side for fairly cheap (but you had to pay them cash). Maybe Roter Rooter or one of the chain places might be my best bet today as I can’t really let this go until tomorrow.

The sweater birds are back! 🙂

  19. While out I stopped at Dollar General to get some reasonably priced cards. I saw a package of banana flavored Moon Pies like I use to carry in my lunch to school. These were the mini version, 6 for one dollar. Only 3 are left! They do taste the same. I had to try three to make sure of it! 😉
I also got my lens put back in my glasses which I am using again after many years. The vision tech seemed totally unfamiliar with real glass lenses and how heavy they are. I told her they are antique like the wearer.

  21. FB tells us when everyone’s birthday is, there is no escaping. 🙂

Norma’s service was perfect. She was so unassuming and never liked being the center of attention. As per her request, it was a simple graveside gathering, our former pastor led most of it (wearing his cat tie, appropriately). The gospel was winsomely preached. There was a little laughter and some tears of course. Her neighbors were there along with her former teacher friends and a number of us from both Presby churches she’s attended in the past 30 years. One of her neighbors played Amazing Grace on the bagpipes.

Simple, heartfelt, Christ-centered — and very sweet.

Now I’m waiting for the plumber. Which is something I would have called Norma about and we would have talked about how, with houses, “there’s always something.” 😦 🙂

  22. Donna, it looks like you’ve already called Roto Rooter. One thing worth trying in the future (I learned it by accident one year, and I mentioned it to a friend, who mentioned it to her son and it worked for him too), if the tub won’t drain even after putting stuff down it, then put stuff down the sink too. I tried that when I had tried the tub, unsuccessfully, several times, but then happened to hear some gurgling in the sink and poured it down the sink instead the next time.

  23. Janice, my opinion on the electrical tape/phone cord issue is don’t mess around with cords that are damaged. Get a new one. That’s what I would do, anyway, as damaged cords can be hazardous.

Just returned from a lovely visit to Northern Ontario. The blueberries are in season and the bears are roaming (mine host frightened one away late one evening by firing into the air). The playing of the wedding music went well and only slightly deviated from the original plan (confusing signals from the back of the sanctuary as to whether the bride had arrived resulted in the wrong music being played for the mothers’ entrance). Had a good visit with a dear friend who is an invalid (to use the old-fashioned term for a chronically debilitating and incurable illness). Rather tired today, but glad I could go.

  25. I haven’t had a shower in 2 days and am feeling it! Can’t wait for the tub to be running again, but no plumber yet.

Meanwhile, trying to do a story from home on a new state senate bill that loosens up tidelands restrictions at the port, state senator’s press aide just emailed me a helpful factsheet. Reading through those bills themselves just makes your eyes glaze over. At least this is in common English. …

Cheryl, I’ll remember that tip next time. 🙂 I haven’t had a plumber out in quite a while (and last time it also was for the tub/shower drain). One plumber told me when I first moved in here that there’s a catch built into that drain pipe that makes it more prone to clogs. Getting that fixed would have required a new pipe, I think, which was pretty expensive so I just decided to live with it.

I’m always careful to use a hair trap in the shower, but I clearly need to do better regular maintenance on it more often (like pouring bleach and baking soda down every few weeks or so).

  26. 6 arrows, yeah, the service was just perfect. 🙂 Donations were requested to go to Westminster Seminary which Norma had supported. Our former pastor told a funny story (which I’d heard before) about the time she said she had to take issue with him on a theological fine point — her cat, she firmly believed, would be in heaven.

The pastor, less rigid than he once was years ago he once told me, backed off and said, “Well, if God thinks it’s important that your cat be there, than your cat will be there!”

  27. And she requested she be buried in one of her favorite cat sweatshirts (she typically wore cat socks even to church in her later years, too). 🙂

Sheesh, I’m really missing her, I had a good cry today after getting home. She was such a dear friend. 😦

  28. So hard to lose dear friends, Donna. I often still mist up at the thought of the passing of a very dear friend of mine, almost four years now since she’s gone. (The anniversary of her home-going is five days from now.) A homeschooling mom she was, and instrumental in my getting started on that road. She was always such an encourager, and so devoted to her family and Lord.

A year, I think it was, after she had died, I happened to order some CDs of a seminar a different, far-away friend had given with some local friends of hers, and one of those friends-of-my-friend had a speaking voice that sounded so much like my deceased friend’s. My tears flowed, listening to her talk about love and devotion to family, because it was like having my friend who had passed on right back in my living room again.

I don’t always know what is going to trigger the tears, but they are healing when they come. A good cry is a good thing.

{hugs} and blessings to you ~

  29. Drain question: Um, no. Never occurred to me. 😉 though there’s probably a YouTube video that explains it all.

Plumber is here snaking the drain. If they break something in the process, he says they’ll provide me with an estimate on what they’ll then charge to fix it. 🙂 Gotta love it.

Update: he says something’s blocking the drain and it probably needs to be completely replaced, $1,300 (but he says probably a handyman could/would do it cheaper). At any rate, it can’t be done today anyway, so I’m stuck.

Maybe mumsee can come out and bring her overalls and tool belt …

  31. Donna in the future it is put baking soda down the drain, pour vinegar down the drain, then flush with boiling water.

Have a good cry over Norma. There will be more tears each time you miss her. I am glad her service so well suited her.

  32. Guess Who. I would investigate further. I have never heard of replacing a stopped drain.
Did this happen gradually, or did you wake up one morning with a stopped drain?
I haven’t followed your problem closely, but you mentioned hair. Women do have that problem. But it doesn’t happen all of a sudden.
A snake can usually open it.
As for showers, you can always get one at the YMCA.
Do you have a tub and shower, or just shower?
Someone, I believe, asked if your sinks in the bath room drained. If so, it couldn’t be very far into the system.
Are these guys charging you for not clearing your drain? Do you have a friend, relative or some such to look at it. I’m afraid someone may be taking advantage of you. Sometimes they do that to women.
In Hendersonville, there’s a handyman business called Andy on Call. They may be able to help.
Ordinarily, a stopped drain is not a big deal. Yours may be different.

  33. Haha — I’ll go to the Y. 🙂

It’s a combo tub and shower, ancient (1920s), everything else in the house drain-wise works fine. The guy could not get the snake through, it completely stopped, so no charge.

I have calls and inquiries out, neighbors know some guys who are working for US residency who do things like that; a real estate pal at the dog park has used Jose, another guy I and my neighbor also used a few years ago — he and a buddy work on the side, cash only. And there’s a plumber in our church. Just looking for estimates right now. Hoping Jose calls back since I’d used him before. They were cheap and knew what they were doing. Only catch was I had to have all the cash on hand (no checks), as I recall they literally followed me down to the ATM which was kind of weird, but turned out OK. This time I’d be better prepared.

Meanwhile, neighbors offered their shower to me — Roto-Rooter guy said I also could take short showers here and then just empty theundrained water into the toilet

Yeah, know about the vinegar and baking soda. But you have to remember to use it, otherwise it doesn’t help much (and I actually do think this is beyond hair or vinegar…)

  34. Corrosion in galvanized pipes is what’s causing the blockage, according to the Roto-Rooter guy. As I said, this is some old stuff in this house so it’s not necessarily a surprise.
