  1. 😦 I had something that I was going to post yesterday afternoon. But decided to wait until today to rant about it.
    I forgot what it was.
Must not have been important. But it was at the time.
That’s often the way life is.

  2. 🙂 The pups and I are up, they’ve taken care of their business and I am having that wonderful first cup of coffee.
🙂 I had to go to one of our properties and get copies of the keys made. Mr. P was able to go with me, so we made a “date” of it. We had pizza at Mellow Mushroom and sat and talked politics.
🙂 I NEVER sleep during the day. Once I am up, I am up until bedtime at night. Yesterday, I came home, did a little more work on the computer, closed my eyes for just a minute and woke an hour later. (Unfortunately, if I’ve done it, I’ve told it, so when I woke up and saw two text messages and a missed call from Guy I blurted out exactly what had happened)
😦 Now he thinks I am not working and earning what he is paying me. The work gets done, but he “needs me to be available to knock some things out this morning”

  3. 🙂 Saturday

🙂 😦 Quarterly staff meeting yesterday, complete with the good, bad and ugly. Our LA papers (we’re one of 9) continue to struggle with severe staffing shortages with no prospect of much hiring on the horizon. But on the plus side we’ll all get an extra week’s pay in the form of a “profit sharing bonus” in the fall and there possibly could be modest (3%?) raises, the first in many years, coming next year. But no one’s exactly holding their breath on that one. 🙂 We may also be bought at some point — or we may buy other papers, the whole business end of things is completely up in the air and clearly way above our (falling) pay grades. 🙂

🙂 They always like to remind us that none of us got into this business to become millionaires, but to make a difference in our corner of the world. True enough, journalism has never paid all that well, although none of us thought we’d actually be going backwards economically. 🙄 Oh well. We all (usually) love what we do and are grateful to be employed in this climate that’s been so hard on our entire industry. The editor said mergers and consolidation will be the future for newspapers (as it was with airlines 20 years ago). If nothing else, he said, we’ll go down fighting.

😦 There’s a memorial today at the Episcopal church just up the street for a friend from the dog park that I should go to. And Norma’s memorial is Monday morning (graveside gathering, she didn’t want anything really, but we all wanted something and figured this would be something simple she’d be OK with; she was so unassuming and modest).

    😦 I miss her.

🙂 Wonderful, cool weather for us this summer (so far). We’re staying in the comfortable 70s at the beaches.

😦 The awful state of our nation, which feels almost unfixable to me right now, no matter who’s elected in 2016 (although some would be worse than others). It’s like we’re just coming unraveled. We must look like easy pickings to our enemies right now.

🙂 God is sovereign and is doing something in all of it. Even if things get worse, even if Christians become even more reviled than we are now in our present culture, it’s all for His glory and our good. We’ve had an easy ride in the U.S. for more than 200 years, but Christianity’s comfort and acceptance are the exception rather than the rule in the world, both now and in history. We need to start getting our minds around that, adjusting our outlook and strengthening our spiritual health as needed.

  4. I’m sorry for your loss, Donna, on Norma’s passing. Not sure if I’d passed along my condolences to you. I think she died while I was offline for a while, and I didn’t know of it until some time later. It is clear you were a good friend to her in word and deed. May the Lord comfort you in your grief.

  5. 😦 My husband may be getting sick.

🙂 I have a couple of good editing jobs to work on, including one for a company I’d tried to work with years ago, but my husband made a second connection (in person) with someone high up in the company, and that was enough to start getting some work from them. Now I have my third project, a fairly big one, for them.

🙂 Butterfly season has begun in earnest. I photographed five species of butterflies (and two of dragonflies) yesterday, including one I’ve been watching for: a monarch on the common milkweed that is everywhere in this area, but without many monarchs to enjoy it. Red admirals are here in abundance this year, and that is a treat.

🙂 Summer is here. Summer makes just about everything better.

😦 So are the mosquitoes. We’re had such a rainy summer, we have lots of standing water and mushy places (deer are even coming to drink at one mini pond created by rainwater in the field on the other side of our next-door neighbors), and the mosquitoes are intense.

😦 The house sparrows are here in abundance, too. If we don’t chase them off the feeders several times a day, they gobble it all up and keep the other birds from landing. The field behind us is planted in wheat this year (the previous summers I have been here, it has been corn or soybeans, seeming to alternate between those two crops), and I think that may be bringing them in greater numbers.

😦 Misten is really showing signs of age this summer. She’ll be 11 in October, so “it’s time,” but there’s a definite difference between now and six months ago.

  6. Thanks 6 arrows — she was a good friend to many of us. And she also was my housecleaning muse, whenever I’d decide to redo a room or closet and start clearing stuff out in a major way, I’d often take a break to call her and report my progress (or discouragement).

The other day I was thinking I need to get back into the computer room sometime soon, it’s collecting things that need to be either tossed or given away, and realized I won’t have Norma to call this time. 😦

And I remember one night several years ago when a rat got inside my house (before I got Annie). Norma talked me down from my panic. 🙂 She was an animal lover (she once cared for a an orphaned baby raccoon on her patio) and I think she felt a little sorry for the rat, thinking he was probably scared.

  7. Cheryl – I cried when I read what you wrote about Misten. 😦

On a lighter note, you & I are opposites when it comes to the temps we enjoy. You say summer makes everything better, I say autumn makes everything better. 🙂 I am not a fan of hot weather, & I love the cool, refreshing breezes of autumn.

  8. 😦 🙂 We had a funeral today for the gentleman who was 91 and diagnosed with cancer. He went quite quickly. He was hoping to stay longer on earth, but ready to go to heaven. His grandson gave a wonderful talk on the need to make a decision for Christ and salvation.

🙂 Had a lovely potluck and music afternoon at a local park.

🙂 Finally, we are almost finished with a deck cleaning and refinishing. Unfortunately, we did part with a stain that was not available anywhere anymore. We managed to find it in the same color, but latex rather than the oil. It is not nearly as nice and I am not happy with how it looks. It is sealed, though, and that is the main thing.

😦 People who so easily accept that others should not be allowed to speak about certain issues. We seem to have come to the point Rome was at where as long as the entertainment continues along with relatively decent food etc. anything will be accepted.

🙂 Very warm, but oh, the flowers and green plants are wonderful to look at!

  9. 🙂 Went to a friend of Mr P’s daughter’s first birthday party. First time I had met them. A big family “to do”.

We have been invited back for a winter party and the paternal grandmother invited us to watch the Mardi Gras parades from her front porch next year.

  10. Lots of rain here today. The farmer son works with is happy as he has finished the blue grass harvest and not started with the wheat. Those who still have lots of acres of blue grass down are not going to be as happy. Those waiting for the wheat to finish will be.

😦 Well issues this morning – maybe due to lowering water table? Not quite sure.

😦 Forest fires still burning to the north

🙂 Smoke hasn’t been too bad this past week and rain is forecast for the coming week – we’ll see.

🙂 First week of camp was great – stressful, but wonderful. It’s so awesome to see the young people interact and connect with our campers. One shared how a little girl in her cabin ran to her parents when they came to pick her up and shouted “I’m a daughter of God!!!” 🙂 🙂

  12. We got a nice sunny day followed by thunderstorms. I got to sit outside in the sun and read for a little while. That makes me very happy. We need the rain to balance things out.

BG is still having stomach issues but Mr. P thinks that is because she isn’t drinking enough water. Dehydration will cause that. She asked me for bottled water the other day at the store. I told her our tap water was good. He went to the store and bought bottled water so she would drink it. She really doesn’t realize what she has.

  13. We have filtered water from our fridge, but our tap water is fine, too. I fill up Lee’s three Contigo steel water bottles for him to take to work. We rarely buy a bottle of water.

  14. I will buy bottled water if I am away from home or where I can’t get water. Daphne, where my office is located has horrible tap water. We have a water service deliver a big bottle and I drink water all day at work. Where I live we have good tap water and I drink lots of it. As I have said before, I am down to mostly coffee, water, and the occasional glass of wine. I have decided I am too cheap to pay $2 for a glass of tea in a restaurant when I can make a gallon of tea at home for way less. I have pretty much given up sodas. I do drink a flavored, canned, carbonated water that I like, but it is a treat and is currently taking the place of the glass of wine I like and is good when mixed with a little fruit juice.

BG is just having tummy trouble. She says she is hungry and wants to eat, but when she starts eating she gets nauceous. She can’t finish eating. I am willing to buy bottled water if this will help her get over it. She has an appointment with the endocrinologist the end of the month so I am going to ask for some detailed testing on her blood when they check her thyroid and hormone levels. We went to see the regular family doctor last month, but I will also mention it to the endocrinologist. Before they have put her on a prescription strength of vitamin D.
