Good Morning!

I almost forgot…..

Today is Armed Forces Day!

On this day in 1868 President Andrew Johnson was acquitted during the Senate impeachment, by one vote.

In 1888 the capitol of Texas was dedicated in Austin.

In 1946 “Annie Get Your Gun” opened on Broadway.

And in 1965 Spaghetti-O’s were sold for the first time.

  1. That “Anything I Can Do” is quite a jolt in the morning. Probably just as much as coffee would be if I drank it. 😉

  2. Thanks for prayers yesterday re: my arm. It feels not as bad this morning. (It almost always hurts most right upon waking up.)

Thirteen hours to show time. Time to get other things accomplished first. Have a great day!

  3. Hello 6 Arrows. I hope this doesn’t come in with blank ink. 🙂
It’s still early for a Saturday.
I have to prepare a SS lesson for tomorrow From Malachi 1. I’ve never taught that before.
It’s going to be a challenge.
Interesting fact about Malachi. The word means “God’s messenger” and some scholars speculate that it wasn’t his name, but his calling that names the book.
    Doesn’t really matter.

  4. It looks more black than blank today, Chas. 🙂

That’s interesting about Malachi possibly being the writer’s calling rather than his name. I’d never heard that.

  5. Good Morning Everyone. Interesting day yesterday. My “Work Child” sold his first hotel yesterday. Because of one document they missed the wire cutoff, so it won’t fund until Monday. At least 8 months of pounding the phone paid off. In celebration Guy called a Commercial Meeting at the Pink Pony Pub in Gulf Shores for 3pm yesterday. The Hangout Music Festival is going on down there. Wrist bands to get in at $250 each, but $15 worth of beer got us on the back deck of the pub where we could hear the music for free AND best of all people watch. I stopped on the way home, at Down South BBQ and brought that home for Mr P and me.

BG spent Wednesday night with me. She requested Spaghetti Carbonara for dinner so we had that and snuggled on the sofa. Yesterday she sent a text asking if I could give her gas money—always with the money. I exacted my “revenge”. She did need gas in her car to get to work and her dad was out of town. I stopped by the school to give her $20. She was at lunch so one of the teachers walked me to the cafeteria where another teacher called out her name. I could see her shrink down, but saw kids pointing at her so I walked over to give her the money. I had just put lipstick on because my lips were dry so I kissed her right on the forehead and left lip marks. Everyone laughed. Then I really drove it home by telling her I loved her and to be careful. That was certainly cringe-worthy. She smiled so I don’t think I did permanent damage to her psyche. ….wonder if that will stop her from having me bring her money? Hmmm, probably not.

  6. Not really much in Malachi 1. But I intend to bring it home by referencing some contemporary situations and mentioning again, the Overton Window.
There is an article in the recent World about prohibitions in New Jersey and California about counseling minors WRT sexual orientation. They performed breast removal on a sixteen year old girl. That should be a crime. But it is a crime to prevent it.

My problem, as always, is the question: Do these guys need to know this? What do they need to know?

  7. An excerpt from the lesson I plan to present. Observations and criticism welcom.

This is the eseence of Malachi 1:6f. What does all of this mean?
This is a messinger of God with a burden for his nation, and their sins. But this is contemporary. We studied about the Temple. Important in understanding the Bible. This is an issue for now. How does Malachi address this?
He has a unique way of presenting his point. Socratic methid. Questions the student.
e.g. Why did the apple fall? Eventually one of Newton’s laws of mutual attraction. Gravity
    .
I heard the 53 million childeren were aborted since the Supreme Court ruling in 1973.
    Why were these children aborted?
The mother didn’t know who the daddy was
    OH! Ok. That explains it.
Why didn’t she know who the daddy was?
She got drunk or high and woke up alone in an Econolodge bed.
    Oh? OK that explains it.
    Why did she get drunk?
She addtended a party and……We could go on and on, but explaining the real causei leads to endemic corruption.

A pizza parlor owner was condemned because said he wouldn’t cater a homosexual marriage. Religious conviction.
    Why was he chastised?
Same sex marraage is the law. Why is it a law?
    Because we redefined marriage.
    Why did we re-define marriage?
Because two men wanted to get married and raise a family.
    You see where this leads?
    No end to it.
The world had pushed us into a Constitutional delimma. Religion is usually considered a religious observation. Yet it is a government contract. The Supreme Court will soon decide whether the religious or equal rights aspect should rule. Most are not paying attention because it doesn’t affect us. This is not a trivial thing. We have seen in previous lessons what happened to Israel when they crossed the line. They gradually fell into apostisy and sin. The sins of Solomon broke one nation into two nations. The Northern Kingdom, Israel was immediately taken to apostasy and eventually fell to the Assyrians, Judah lastedf a couple of hundred years longer, but they crossed the line when King Manassas sinned and even the conversion of Manassas and rule of Josiah didn’t undo the damage hat had already been don.

  9. Our pastor said something last week (he’s said it before) that stuck with me this week — God’s judgement is (sometimes) simply meted out by allowing people to do what they want to do. Following their desires, giving them over, as it says in Romans.

It all becomes a personal and corporate mess real fast. A mess of our own making, as God withholds his hand and allows us to carry on with abandon, thinking we’re free & enjoying ourselves.

    Perhaps the econolodge even prospers.

And then — it’s all upside down, everything (suddenly, it seems to us, but not really) comes crashing down. We ask, what happened?

    Judged.

  10. Annie the “shootin’ woman” — “Get us a range!”

    Fun clip.

Our rain yesterday was wonderful and today looks glorious — cool and clear. Only downside is muddy paw prints — even from Annie the cat this morning, there was a trail of muddy paw marks all over the bathroom counter to clean up. Cats go anywhere they want, there is really no stopping them.

There’s a big armed forces day parade today in one of our cities. Always important to avoid the streets around there on this day every year. …

  11. Muddy paw prints!!! I never get to see that here. But mud, on the driveway, yes. Some of the new grass is dying back now because of our lack of rain, but I see some ajuga I believe I can transplant to bare spots. 🙂

  12. Anyone else here read the very practical books being put out by Cruciform Press? They’re short (about 100 pages), to the point. I’ve been helped/encouraged many of their titles – Just fyi … (and the books also are available on amazon, of course, but they may be cheaper from the publisher — either way, not expensive — paperback or kindle)

  13. Chas mentioned that he will reference some contemporary situations when he teaches his lesson on Malachi 1.

That reminded me that a while back, someone here mentioned that their pastor uses examples from the lives of the patriarchs rather than from his own life. The inference, I think, was that that was better than using a pastor’s own experiences, or stories from other people’s lives, as examples & lessons.

I understand the point, but I believe there is a good reason to use examples & stories from contemporary people, too – that people can better “relate” to people they know or could know. Jesus used parables about things the people experienced in their daily lives.

Of course, I realize there is a temptation for a pastor to make his sermon “all about me” (him), filling it with anecdotes rather than more meaty teaching. But there is a place for some anecdotes to be used to make a biblical teaching more “relatable”.

In another set of photos I was wearing a size 4 dress that was too big–BG was about 18 months old in the photo. I also found my newborn hospital photo and her newborn hospital photo. Both babies have the same mouth.

  16. Well, fun night at the dog park as a few of use reviewed some of the park’s greatest hits. Like:

    * The morning when two older men who got into a spat and one of them through the other guy’s dog leash over the fence onto the railroad tracks. So the victim tried to grab the other guy’s stick ball launcher and they wound up tussling over that, hand-to-hand combat, the stick between them, but only for about 1/2 minute before they both ran out of breath. The ball launcher did, however, get launched over the fence, requiring one of the younger guys to hop over and retrieve both items.

    * The time when the repo man (yes, that’s what he did for a living) and his pit bulls offended a woman who owned a Christmas tree lot in Oregon (and thus was prepared for battle). She charged out to her car and grabbed some huge bolt cutters as a weapon. Police were called.

Meanwhile, we have a new regular who comes with one of the guys who’s kind of living on the fringe as it is. The friend doesn’t have a dog but he’s been nicknamed “Gilligan” as he wears a beanie. He also has an ankle bracelet (and a curfew) so he disappears for several days at a time as he frequently violates his parole (original crime apparently was for growing marijuana — “a LOT” of marijuana).

  17. Tonight’s concert was very enjoyable again. It was a musical celebration of Syttende Mai, the celebration of Norway’s independence. There were singers dressed in traditional clothing for the occasion. One of the songs they sang was “How Great Thou Art,” (sung in Norwegian). Very lovely. There were other musicians, too, and everything went well.

(And nobody but my daughter noticed my major memory slip.) 😉 I guess the good thing about making tons and tons of mistakes over the years is that one gets used to finding ways to cover them up so no one who doesn’t know the music knows. 😉

And a surprising and pleasant bonus I received at the end of the evening was a check written out to me for performing there. I’ve never been paid for these shows, so that was kind of neat. 🙂

  18. I have to share this story.
Yesterday I went to have my toenails painted. I took along my Kindle to read while my feet soaked in the whirlpool and the massage chair took the kinks out of my back. A woman came in and sat beside me in the next pedicure chair. I noticed she was very chatty with the people who worked there, but kept reading my book.
Eventually the lady came to start working on my feet. I went through my explanation that I could not have the sea salt scrub, the massage, and lotion on my legs they had to stay below my ankles. The woman walked off to get some supplies. The woman next to me asked why I couldn’t have the full works and could only let them work below my ankles. I explained that I had really itchy skin and could not use perfumed anything, especially on my legs because it inflamed them and I would scratch until I drew blood, sometimes leading to infection. I explained that my legs itched most of the time but over the last 20 or so years I had learned to ignore it. I showed her where I had just been scratching. She asked if I had seen a dermatologist. Well DUH! Of course I have seen a dermatologist. I have also seen a therapist and a chiropractor and at one point I would have seen a Voodoo Priestess if I thought they could stop the itch! I managed to hide my irritation. She asked what I did when it got really bad. I told her I had a cream and that I soaked tea towels in ice water and wrapped my legs ( this is especially fun in the Winter).
The lady next to me said that was no way to live. She asked for my hand and started praying for me. She was VERY descriptive in her prayer. She spoke of the blood of Jesus washing over my legs and healing them. I am nothing if not a polite Southern woman. I went with it, but was skeptical. Sometime in the middle of the prayer I had a change of attitude. “Ok, Kimberley, what if this REALLY works? You don’t know, just go with it.”
I shaved my legs last night. They itched a little, but nothing that kept me scratching. I am choosing to believe her prayer worked.
She just moved here a month or so ago. She had lived in Arizona for the last five years and worked with what she described as a “Joyce Meyers type” ministry. She told me she has visited my church but found her home at another church. She is starting her new job with the local Christian radio station tomorrow.

Anything like this ever happen to you?
Do you do things like this to total strangers?

The SS lesson went well. But we almost didn’t get past:
    “Yet, Jacob have I loved,
    But Esau have I hated”

    And that was frustrating.
I did get to the Overton Window.
Pastor Steve, in his sermon gave me the perfect closing for my lesson.
Fourth point: “We are not citizens of this world”.

  21. Sarah Palin doesn’t deserve all the hate and venom spewed at her, BUT her 15 minutes of fame are over. She is but a footnote in history at this point and not personally knowing her I cannot say what type of person she is. She has played into the hands of the Left by thinking she is more relevant than she is.
Outside of true historical figures do you recognize any of these names? I don’t.

Those last names still carry weight around Charleston. (At least in the last century. Things have changed lately.)

Still, the hatred the left reserves for her amazes me … Not long ago the young reporter who sits next to me says one day with relish, “did you see the latest about sarah palin?”

Um, no. I mean, who cares?

  24. Back to God’s judgement …

From our sermon today (this passage referring to OT believers):

“One of the greatest judgements of God is to let man go where his own heart desires. Perhaps the acme of their rebellion culminated in causing their ‘firstborn to pass through the fire’ (Ez. 21:25, Jer. 32:35) — the sacrificing of their children on the grill of the false god, Molech. … ”

  25. I think we’re going to get an oriole nest. 🙂 We’ve seen a male and/or female just about every day this month, sometimes just a glimpse from a distance, but sometimes several quick sightings of each bird. Tonight male and female were down on the ground together, and it looked like they were seeking out nesting material. I’ve actually never seen an oriole on the ground. I didn’t get any good photos of the two together, but got a couple decent photos of him.

I also got my first-ever shots of a hummingbird at a flower! Last summer I took hundreds of photos of hummingbirds in our tree and flying near the feeders, but I hadn’t managed to get any at a flower. But we have some red trumpet-like flowers below the tree, and a few days ago I thought, Hmm, those really look like hummingbird magnets. I wonder if they ever come there? and tonight my husband saw one down there (a female) and I took several pictures. Not magazine-cover quality photos, but decent shots.

  26. When does the toilet get clogged? After hubby is asleep, of course. (Remember, Lee goes to bed around 6 to get up a bit before midnight.)

Plunging didn’t work too well. It’s not totally clogged, but flushing slowly.

So now I’m trying (for the third time this evening) a do-it-yourself toilet unclogger. It worked for me the one other time I tried it. Googling for some other ideas, I found out I hadn’t done it quite right the first two times tonight. If it doesn’t work this time, there’s another method I can try.

    The method I’m currently trying:

Pour 1/4 cup dishwashing liquid into toilet water. Let sit at least 10 minutes. Then slowly pour hot (but not boiling – I boil the water, then let it sit) water from waist height into toilet. Let sit a few minutes before flushing. (I had forgotten about pouring the water from waist height & letting it sit for a bit. Hope it works this time.)
