Good Morning!

On this day in 1787 the Constitution of the United States of America was signed by delegates at the Constitutional Convention. 

In 1862 the Battle of Antietam took place during the American Civil War. More than 23,000 men were killed, wounded, or missing. 

In 1911 the first transcontinental airplane flight started. It took C.P. Rogers 82 hours to fly from New York City to Pasadena, CA. 

In 1953 Ernie Banks became the first black baseball player to wear a Chicago Cubs uniform.

And in 1966 “Mission Impossible” premiered on CBS-TV.

    Just got back from the Band and Choir concert – excellent.
    Kim, I know it is painful and confusing to go through what is happening, but I am excited to see what the Lord is doing for you. It’s an adventure with Him.

  3. Today, you can drive from New York to Pasadena in 82 hours.
    The brother of one of Elvera’s ancestors was killed at Antietam. Rather, “died of wounds received” at Antietam. If you visit the battlefield, you see that a lot. I suspect that modern medicine could have saved many of those.

  4. I’ve been on a conference call this morning with the former prisoner who will speak at the Christian Library International dinner. He practiced his delivery of his talk over the phone with me and another volunteer. He said in his unit they had about 60 wanting a Bible but only 12 Bibles available so they had to have a sign up sheet for their time with a Bible.

  5. I purchased clothes for my friend who is having surgery on Monday. I need to deliver those and see what she can use in the hospital and rehab. I will probably have some returns to make. One of the PJ sets says “Grumpy but Gorgeous.” I think that is how she will feel after surgery. 🙂

  6. I see from last night that Donna posted a story about the President having a fundraiser in LA for $32,400. Chas said he wouldn’t pay $32.40. Well, Chas, you couldn’t pay me to have “an intimate” dinner with Mr. Obama. Okay, maybe if I got $34k I’d do it.

    But it amazes me that the Left talks about the rich Republicans, then has these dinners that only rich people can afford. How many rich Republicans would attend a Democrat fundraiser? I can think of two who are so liberal they might as well be Democrats, but most rich Republicans would not.

    Maybe if those contributors who then show up at rallies promoting government money to the poor would send that $34,000 to a homeless shelter or other charity that helps the poor, they could eliminate a lot of the need for government handouts.

  7. Janice, I suspect that if you, or someone, contacted the Gideons, you could get Bibles. At least New Testaments. I used to work with the Gideons. We distributed them free.

  11. Haha — pumpkin spice latte. But it sounds kind of good to me … If it weren’t so depressingly hot out here.

    Well, $32,400 is a whole lot of money for most of us. I can’t even fathom having enough money that I could spend something like that on “dinner” — with anyone. 🙄 But there are a lot of very, very rich Democrats, especially in Hollywood.

    Janice’s comment about the lack of available Bibles for some is such a good reminder of how blessed we are (and how easy it becomes for us to take some of our blessings for granted).

  14. Thank you, Chas, for your suggestion. They really need large print Bibles in prisons probably because of lighting and also because some people grow old in prison. We had a couple visiting at our Bible study/prayer meeting last Wed. who were in town for a stay at a lodge for cancer treatment patients. They had their Gideon Bible with them that they brought from their room at the lodge. 🙂

  20. Chas, the camp hospitals of the American Civil War were death traps. If you were hit in a limb, you would probably end up having it amputated because of infection. If you were hit in the body – well, good luck. And of course, the crowded camp conditions with poor sanitation meant that vermin and bacteria spread their diseases easily. Not until the age of antibiotics during WWII did being wounded in war not mean a near death sentence.

  22. Seven and eight year olds are out harvesting green beans. There are a lot of green beans out there. I don’t know if many of them will make it in. They like to eat fresh things. Tomato harvest especially seems to shrink between the vines and the house.

  25. Peter, I forwarded the cartoon with my husband, because I knew he could relate.

    See, last fall he took our younger daughter out for coffee because said daughter wanted to talk with him. She ordered a pumpkin spice latte (or some such concoction with pumpkin) and he ordered something more coffee-like. He thought his was the worst coffee he had ever drunk . . . until halfway through when he realized they had the wrong cups. He was none too pleased to have given up a good cup of coffee for something he deemed undrinkable.

  26. Well, they are back. Eleven green beans for supper. Guess that is what I get for sending a person who inspects everything with his mouth. It is better for him to be eating green beans than the balloons and car air freshener he was eating yesterday. I have no idea where he got a car air freshener, I don’t allow those things in my cars.

  27. Well, today was much better than yesterday. Thank you so much for all the prayers and advice on the prayer thread!

    L.’s homecoming is September 27th. She has a beautiful dress and we’ll get shoes this weekend. Two boys have asked her, and she declined both invitations to go with a group of girls. (Yay!). Since she won’t have a date, I planned on getting her a mum. I decided to get her input on what size she’d like, etc., but she informed me she didn’t want one. Everyone wears them, and I think she’s going to wish she had one once she gets to the game, but she’s pretty adamant she doesn’t want one. So, I guess I’m not buying a mum!
