On this day in 1778 the Stars and Stripes was carried to a foreign port, in France, for the first time. It was aboard the American ship Ranger.

In 1876 Alexander Graham Bell filed an application for a patent for the telephone.  It was officially issued on March 7, 1876.

In 1889, in Los Angeles, CA, oranges began their first trip to the east.

In 1912 the first diesel engine submarine was commissioned in Groton, CT.

In 1929 the “St. Valentine’s Day Massacre” took place in Chicago, IL. Seven gangsters who were rivals of Al Capone were killed.

And in 1989 the first satellite of the Global Positioning System was placed into orbit around Earth.

Quote of the Day

1 Corinthians 13

¹If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

  1. Today’s music looks good, AJ. I haven’t listened to it yet, but I’m sure I will like those videos!

I enjoyed yesterday’s Blue Danube Waltz. The dancing on it was great! It was also fun to see Daniel Barenboim conducting. He’s an excellent pianist, and I’ve enjoyed watching him play the instrument, but his conducting I haven’t seen as much, though he is quite famous for that (if you’re a classical music fan). I noticed at one point in the music yesterday he was using his right hand to tap the rhythm of some of the low instruments’ parts onto his left hand. Those parts were almost imperceptible under the melody, but seeing him tap out the part helped me hear what was going on in the underneath layers. Such a cool experience!

  2. Wow! Love the beauty of God’s creation that Cheryl so faithfully captured to share.

I am really suffering with this illness. Last night I found a large plastic container I could use if I needed to throw up. Well, Miss Bosley promptly hopped into it and claimed it as her own. She does not understand sickness.

  3. I had the BEST dream this morning. I had gone back to Mumsee’s to visit. She and I were in the kitchen having pimento and cheese sandwiches. She had HUGE slices of bread! When everyone got back home they brought out a basket full of envelopes addressed to me. It was full of checks and money! All of my friends had sent money to help with the needs of the children so that Mumsee and Mike could offer their home to more children. I woke up so happy.

😦 I did an AVG tuneup scan on my computer and thought I had fixed all the annoying problems. I fixed some, but not all. I still get the ads that pop up.

We are going to get snow here today and tonight but not as much as the south just received. Hope you start feeling better Janice…and Miss Bosely better get out of the way…silly kitty!! What a beautiful dream Kim…those are the kind from which you never want to awaken! 🙂

  7. We do get lovely sunsets here, and such a wonderful spot to see them. Our library picture window looks out over a field, with the trees (and houses) the equivalent of a city block or two away on the other side, and thus not obscuring the view but giving sunsets a row of trees for a foreground. (There are also trees to the left of us a little closer, as seen in the photo.) Night after night we get a front-row seat, and my husband loves them too.

  9. Non-romantic story for the day.

First off, our printer stopped working two days ago. Well, it was working, but it was also spewing out yellow ink. My husband googled the problem and then got in touch with the company, who sent out a new printer immediately.

We got the new printer yesterday (less than 24 hours after my husband made the phone call). But the FedEx guy who was delivering it fell off his truck in our driveway.

The printer was missing a part. My husband called again, and we took the replacement printer, which had a problem, to a shipping place in town to return it.

The morning the FedEx guy came back. We thought he would be bringing the second new printer, but instead he was bringing a box of ink. Unfortunately, on his way up the driveway he backed up wrong and went off into the snow at the edge of the driveway, and dug himself into a rut it took him several minutes to dig out of.

Now, my husband and I were on our way out the door to go to lunch for Valentine’s Day. On our front porch is a box with the second new printer in it. And at the end of our driveway is a delivery truck, stuck in the rut the other driver dug, with his flashers on. My husband was hungry, so he ate a bagel. We have yet to see whether we will manage to get out for a late lunch, as planned.

Our driveway has been plowed and snowblown, by the way. In fact, last week the UPS guy complimented us on how good our driveway looks, since snow is covering everything these days and I guess ours must have been better than most.

But at the moment it is impassible, and I sit dressed up (velvet pants and top, dangly earrings), with no place to go. 😦

  10. Ah, FRIDAY!! This day didn’t start well. Last night the forecast was for an inch or so of snow by morning. When I went got up, there was nothing new outside. An hour later it was coming down in force. By the time I left, there was 1-2″ of new snow. The drive wasn’t too bad, as the roads had been cleared. But crossing the bridge I got stuck behind a snow plow going 15 mph. and blocking both of the narrow lanes. Then, as I was turning to go to the place I meet my carpool, I saw them leaving without me. I knew I was a few minutes late. Anyway, I hadn’t heard that we were meeting ten minutes early because one of them had a meeting before school. Well, I ended up driving myself the other 20 miles, but we both got stuck behind someone going ridicosly slow (15-20 MPH for 15 miles- 30 mph was safe). To top it off, there was an accident we had to wait for. We got to the school 1/2 hour late. Oy! I cannot wait for Spring!

Oh, and I figured the picture was someone in the Midwest.

  11. The most recent posts make me feel like maybe it’s not as bad as I thought being sick in bed.

Just to top off my Valentine’s day, Bosley threw up.

Thanks, Donna for the cute ecard you posted. I was able to get it. And the cat on ice was amazing.

I have had 2 pieces of toast and a little orange juice today. This will probably be the one time my husband brings me a box of chocolates, just when I can’t enjoy them.

  12. Cheryl, that’s all pretty funny — or it will be in a couple of years. 🙂

It’s very warm here today, I’m guessing we’ll be in the mid to high 70s with lots of sun. I even broke out the sandals to go get my hair cut.

Does anyone here use one of those food vacuum sealers for produce (veggies/fruits)? I’m tired of not being able to get through the fresh veggies I buy for lunches fast enough (and I don’t want to go the store every other day!), but am not sure if the sealers would be a solution?

  13. My daughter has one and loves it. The only draw back for her is the cost of bags. She usually puts it on her wish list, though, for birthdays or Christmas. They use it for freezing the stuff they buy in bulk. I don’t know that they use it for fresh veggies, however.

You may want to check out Mary Hunt’s website. Her cheapskate monthly site has lots of tips on keeping produce a long time. I know I can keep lettuce for a week or so, just by washing it and keep it in a bag with a paper towel. Celery wrapped in aluminum soil with keep very long. Herbs can be kept in a glass with water.

I did try the green bags that are supposed to keep thing longer. I was not very impressed, since you had to wipe down any moisture every day.

  14. I tried the green bags once, too, same results as you had, kathaleena. I saw the recommendation for the vacuum sealers on Mary Hunt’s site, actually, some months ago which has had me thinking about getting one. But one of the reviews I read said they were tricky to use with veggies. My idea is to cut them up in lunch portions, vacuum them, then I could just grab one each day for a week or hopefully more?

Celery lasts well in the crisper, as do radishes, but I have problems with the lettuce and broccoli and cauliflower … Just tired of tossing some of this stuff, especially if I skip bringing a lunch for a day or two due to a complicated work schedule.

  15. I mentioned earlier this week about being asked to play in a musical variety show (actually, it’s all piano, but different genres: classical, jazz, Broadway, popular). Your prayers as I prepare for this performance are very appreciated. For those who are interested in hearing what I will be playing, this is a recording of the complete sonata (three movements — Beethoven’s “Pathetique”). However, I will only be doing the 2nd and 3rd movements, which begin at about the 8:40 mark on the video.

The music on the screen is from the Schnabel edition, which is also the edition I own. I might play the piece from memory — memorizing is optional, but it’s easier for me to play more expressively without the distraction of the music in front of me. However, there is this 51-year-old brain to contend with, a different game than memorizing music in my teens and twenties. 😉 We shall see…

  16. 6 Arrows, that was perfect timing. I fixed chicken noodle soup with jammin’ lemon ginger tea for my drink. I enjoyed the concert with my meal. It was musical healing therapy. It brought back memories of when son was homeschooling and listening mainly to classical. We also had season tickets to see the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Later on son got more engaged with jazz. I preferred the classical but liked some jazz.

I prayed some for your performance as I listened.

  17. Glad you enjoyed it, Janice, the music and the meal. 🙂 We had homemade chicken noodle soup last night for supper, and some of the leftover amount for lunch today. It was nice to have an oven in which to bake the chicken before adding it to the soup. Our oven had gone kaput a couple weeks ago, but hubby ordered a new heating element for it so that we didn’t have to buy a whole new range. The element came Thursday, and he put it in yesterday when he was home on his day off for his birthday.

Thank you, too, for praying as you listened to the music. 🙂

  19. Wow, Cheryl, you may have missed lunch, but you certainly got a good story.
Kathleena, I know that you were responding to Donna’s earlier comment about the bags, but it makes for some funny reading when it followed her comment about Bosley.
A peaceful Saturday morning today. I am going to a Valentine’s dinner tonight put on by the 11th grade class. I got a group of singles together.
We need special meals too. Only place to go out.

  20. Cheryl,

Sorry I didn’t respond sooner. I’ve been busy with the 2 feet of snow. 😦

Mom is still in, no diagnosis yet, they are running more tests. She has some internal bleeding, and she did poorly on the stress test they gave her. We’re just waiting to see what’s going on at this point.

Thanks for your prayers, all of you other folks too, and I’d ask that they continue if you would be so kind. I’ll update when I know some more.

  21. I’m back. We did get to lunch, something like 3:30. We also had a health scare from my sister in there (she’s OK), so phone calls between me and her and me calling all five of our brothers a couple times each, plus calling other people to ask for prayer. It made for a really crazy early afternoon. And my husband just re-snowplowed part of the drive (the FedEx drivers were actually off the driveway, but we were afraid of what they might have done to the drive itself) and the trench next to the back fence to make sure Misten doesn’t try again to get out.

  22. I’m home. Our predicted 1-3 inches of snow is more like 8-10 with drifting. I had to shovel my way from the garage to the house. Glad it’s a 3 day weekend. With all the days off we’ve had at school, I was thinking we should just have school on Monday, even if it is a holiday for us. But now I’m glad we have it off since this was a long week- the first full week of school since December.

When I got home Mr. P and I exchanged presents. He got a subscription to Garden and Gun Magazine and an iTunes gift card. I got a Johnny Cash/Willie Nelson CD and and enamal ware bowl I wanted that my grandmother had one like… I told him about my nasty lunch and suggested that if he didn’t want to go out to Pinzones as we had planned I would be perfectly happy…so we are watching the Olympics and eating left over spaghetti.

  25. Proud of Emily. After finishing the snow-throwing yesterday, she saw the new neighbor across the street shoveling his driveway, so she let him use our snow-thrower.

More snow on the way tomorrow. Emily’s excited. No one else is. (She loves to shovel, & to use the snow-thrower if she has to!)

Last night I read that Gov. Malloy had issued a state of emergency because we are running low on salt for the roads, which was leading to a lot of spin-outs.

Emily asked me, “Why? Did we send all our salt to the people down south?” 🙂

(It may not sound funny to you, but it was funny at the time.)

Cheryl – At least you looked gorgeous while you waited. 🙂
