Good Morning!
On this day in 1794 President Washington approved a measure adding two stars and two stripes to the American flag, following the admission of Vermont and Kentucky to the union.
In 1854 Anthony Faas of Philadelphia, PA, patented the accordion.
In 1928 Ernst F. W. Alexanderson gave the first public demonstration of television.
In 1982 an Air Florida 737 crashed into the capital’s 14th Street Bridge after takeoff and fell into the Potomac River. 78 people were killed.
And in 1989 Bernhard H. Goetz was sentenced to one year in prison for possession of an unlicensed gun that he used to shoot four youths he claimed were about to rob him. He was freed the following September.

It’s Trace Adkins’ birthday, so my favorite from him.
It’s also the birthday of Joe Pass, a fine guitar player.
That’s some serious pickin’. And here’s some more. Joe Pass and Roy Clark. 🙂
Nice. 🙂

Seems we are all off to a slow start. I had convinced Amos that it wasn’t time for us to get up and had just gotten him settled back down when Rose’s Tree Service started up across the street. It seems the neighbors aren’t taking a chance on another tree falling on their house.
AJ, Perhaps you can give us a goal or something to hope for…do you have any photos of a tropical location?
Yesterday I looked at some beautiful photos of various birds in the snow that someone sent me. All the bird feeders and then the birds in the snow reminded me that God even cares about the sparrow, just nowadays a few humans help out. 😉

Kim’s mention of Rose’s tree service reminded me. When we moved here in 2001, there was a small poplar tree growing near the deck. I figured that it would have to come down some day. I looked at it for years. A couple of years ago, I looked at it and it was too big for me. So, I had to pay a guy $250 to take it down and haul it away. It happened Friday. I missed Lions. People asked me about it. They missed me.
:-) I’ve never been missed before.
There’s another small enough to handle. I’m going to take it down before the leaves come on it.

Does anyone here use Dropbox? I just read it is good for backing up WordPress websites. If interested you should find more info on a plugin at WP Back Up to Dropbox. I have not used Dropbox but I am interested in it. Experiences anyone?

Story time! I got up early to write before Zumba.
Our friends in Colorado Springs live in the Black Forest area that was so devastated by fire last year. I didn’t know how serious the devastation was until I spoke with her dad the other day. They live maybe a mile north of a major road through the forest. (Nancy Jill will know all this). You drive north from the main road up a wide street and they’re off a long, perhaps mile-long, driveway into the woods. Maybe eight homes were on that driveway, a couple dozen on the connector to the main road.
EVERY house, all the way to the main road, burned except theirs and one other. The burned grass came within a foot of their propane tank; the tires on their truck were scorched. Their barn burned to the ground.
The house, which they built themselves, wasn’t touched.
(I should note they were scrupulous about fire safety. During one of our visits, we helped clear downed wood.)
“Why are they God’s favorite?” I asked my friend. “What’s your explanation for why their house was spared and no others?”
“Their archives.”
They’ve been professional writers in the Christian world for nearly 40 years. They’re the writers behind some of the most theologically important films ever made for Bible study. All the notes were in their house.
Remarkable.

Most of God’s favorites died horrible deaths after suffering much. That is, if He really has favorites. Glad their home was saved, however.

I’ve got Dropbox, but seldom use it. Have been thinking about it, however. It’s an easy way to exchange information with people with whom you are working, or who want to see your photos.
My blog is sent to my email and I put it in a folder–my blog mistress was concerned that since I write my blog post onto WordPress, if something happened to WP, I’d lose my posts. That’s how I’ve been handling that concern.
Of course, if I lose my email, they’re all lost. Hmm. Maybe I should shift them to a Word doc, too? The problem is transferring all the links. Sigh.
Ah, technology, a blessing and a bane–when it’s not God’s favorite for passing on the gospel! 🙂

Good Morning and Happy Birthday Karen!! 🙂
Michelle, it is interesting that a handout we were given yesterday in church was taken from an article Stephen had written on being a “good neighbor”….and I begin my days with their devotional “My Time with God”….
I know the area well and it is amazing their home was the only structure in that area to stand after the devastating fire (a dear friend who lives but a half mile from the S’s lost their home)….I know many faithful followers of Christ whose homes were a total loss…only He knows why some were spared and some were not…but, we trust in His purpose and plans for their lives through it all….it has been a very difficult season for many of our friends…it is a blessing that the S’s archives were spared

I did a devotional, My Time With God, one year which I believe went through the New Testament. Is that the one? I really liked it. Seems like it used the NCV.
Just heard from friend at work who has lots of things in storage and miraculously has all I need in the way of cat supplies. Litter boxes, cat bed, cat carrier, feeding bowls, etc. God is good.

I remember when I adopted Annie I got a “list” from a cat-owning friend and dashed by the discount pet outlet on my way to the shelter to buy everything (food, litter, litter box, carrier). I have dog supplies galore, but had never even ventured into the “cat section” of the pet store.
I didn’t buy a cat bed, however, as I was told the cat would simply sleep wherever she wanted to sleep — and she does hijack a dog bed now and again. She looks so cute, all little and curled up in the middle of the giant dog beds. Princess.

We had an excellent sermon yesterday on Rom. 8:9:
“But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.”
Our pastor suggested there are 3 ways to know if we are have the Spirit of Christ:
1/ The Word — we acknowledge the authority of the Word of God and respond to it, even in times of affliction.
2/ We believe. This is intensely personal. And while our bodies are still subject to death — and we will have a perpetual battle with sin and doubt in this life — we have the deep knowledge that God is our Father. We know who our Master is.
3/ Obey. We acknowledge who our Father is and we seek to be righteous and obedient. When we fail (as we will), we have an Advocate. Repentance is the sign of a regenerate heart. We continue to fight against our sin and seek to be faithful to God’s commandments.

Donna, I caught a plane yesterday and just feel laggy, baggy and saggy. Laggy from being behind on EVERYTHING, baggy from having too many bags of stuff to deal with, and saggy from all the sitting while traveling. Actually, I did a lot of walking in Waco on Saturday and a lot in the airports yesterday.

Slightly mortified if I gave the wrong impression.
In other news, a QOD. Was Mikhail Kalishnikov responsible for the deaths of millions because of his invention? He asked the question before he died. I thought the priest’s response a little weak:

Janice, I have Dropbox. I bought a few ebook bundles last year on topics interesting to me (homeschooling, health, etc.), but had a difficult time figuring out how to print the files going through Adobe as recommended. Someone then suggested I get a Dropbox account and put the files in there to back them up, and I discovered to my pleasant surprise that it is easy to print files when they’re in Dropbox. So I mainly use it to store and print educational materials for the kids, and other items that are valuable to me.
I know it can be used for a lot more things than what I’m using it for, but I haven’t taken time to explore all the possibilities. It’s working well for me, using it as I do.

6Arrows, flying used to be fun and exciting…going someplace, doing something…now it is akin to being herded onto a bus/cattle trailer. Not only that but the people traveling put little effort into it. Really? You can’t change out of your pajamas? Now most airlines charge $25 per bag to check your luggage (so they can lose it anyway) so everyone is trying to “carry on” their luggage. There is just nothing glamorous about it.
But all that aside, my father used to say I would ride a fence post wrapped in barbed wire just to go somewhere. 😉

Your cute joke of the day:
INNOCENCE IS PRICELESS
One Sunday morning, the pastor noticed little Alex standing in the foyer of
the church staring up at a large plaque. It was covered with names and small
American flags mounted on either side of it. The six-year old had been
staring at the plaque for some time, so the pastor walked up, stood beside
the little boy, and said quietly, ‘Good morning Alex.’
‘Good morning Pastor,’ he replied, still focused on the plaque. ‘Pastor,
what is this? ‘
The pastor said, ‘Well son, it’s a memorial to all the young men and women
who died in the service.’
Soberly, they just stood together, staring at the large plaque. Finally,
little Alex’s voice, barely audible and trembling with fear asked,
‘Which service, the 9:00 or the 10:30?’

It just hit me, Michelle, because of my own reading lately. It goes so against how the world thinks about favorites. It is easy to give the wrong impression to new believers.

Bosley is reading the blog with me. Also she is kneading my fleece vest while purring big time. Glad to be home.
Weather is cool and rainy. It was such a treat being in the Texas sunshine on Saturday. Sticker shock at Sam’s earlier as a pack of fresh blueberries was 6.99 and a pack at the HEB in Waco was 1.99. HEB stands for Here Everything is Better. Son said a friend said it should stand for Here Everything’s Bigger. It was a tremendous store. Gas is more expensive in Atlanta, too.
Speaking of airlines feeling like buses these days, the type plane I flew on with Spirit airline was an Air Bus. I had not flown since 1996 until this past year. It is quite different. Those who serve on the planes as stewards are not so cookie cutter as they use to be. I love to sit by the window and look out but keep getting center aisle because of my effort to get lower price fares at the last minute. It was 199.00 to fly from Dallas to Atlanta. Husband said it would cost almost that much to drive when you include cost of meals and lodging with gas and wear and tear on the auto.

Little feller is up at the mailbox, waiting to escort little sister down from the bus. She went in to dance class today, but the rest of the folk are off to the big city for karate and grocery shopping so she is taking the bus home by herself. He is quite protective of her so, even though he is not a very active boy when it comes to exercise, he made the half mile walk to meet her. Nice guy, little feller.
