What’s interesting in the news today?

Open thread.

Here’s a few to start off.

First, something to keep in mind.

From APNews  “You simply can’t safely bomb a chemical weapon storehouse into oblivion, experts say. That’s why they say the United States is probably targeting something other than Syria’s nerve agents.

But now there is concern that bombing other sites could accidentally release dangerous chemical weapons that the U.S. military didn’t know were there because they’ve lost track of some of the suspected nerve agents.

Bombing stockpiles of chemical weapons – purposely or accidentally – would likely kill nearby civilians in an accidental nerve agent release, create a long-lasting environmental catastrophe or both, five experts told The Associated Press. That’s because under ideal conditions – and conditions wouldn’t be ideal in Syria – explosives would leave at least 20 to 30 percent of the poison in lethal form.”

The President’s approval is dropping.

From BusinessInsider  “President Barack Obama’s approval rating has matched its lowest ever recorded in a new NBC News poll.

And huge drops in his foreign policy approval combined with poor marks for handling the situation in Syria are to blame.”

Yet another reason to not send kids to public school.

From Chicago/CBSLocal  “Some people may think a five-year old is too young for sex education.

Administrators with Chicago Public schools do not.

New to the curriculum this year, mandatory sexual and health education for kindergarten classes.”

“Students will also take a look at the different family structures that exist in today’s society.”

Of course they will. Can you guess which family type will get the most attention?

Say it with me now….. Most transparent administration evah!

From WFB White House visitor logs are not subject to disclosure under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), a federal judge ruled Friday, blocking the public from reviewing the records.

U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia ruled in a unanimous decision in Judicial Watch v. U.S. Secret Service that visitor logs for the office of the president are not agency records and therefore not subject to FOIA requests.

Judicial Watch, a conservative watchdog group, originally sued the Secret Service in 2009 after the agency refused to turn over seven months of visitor logs from the White House.”

And lastly, this one. She’s always been an activist judge, so this isn’t exactly shocking.

From MSNNews  “Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is performing a same-sex wedding this weekend in what is believed to be a first for a member of the nation’s highest court.

Ginsburg is officiating at the marriage of Kennedy Center President Michael Kaiser and John Roberts, a government economist, on Saturday. Kaiser says he asked Ginsburg to officiate because she is a longtime friend.”

  1. Every now and then some parents in Ontario become all upset over the primary health curriculum. And every time I wonder where their mind is since health education is mainly about safety, healthy eating, bullying, strangers and personal hygiene. Yes, within that there’s good touch bad touch, family as a support, etc but most people should remember primary teachers are or will be parents and just like other parents have their own comfort zone. Even if there’s a nefarious plot at the ministry of education it would never make it to the actual classroom.

Two links on Syria — the guardian piece is especially worth reading (the guardian is always worth reading)

not sure how legitimate this source is but its worth a read.

  3. I’d previously heard there were invitations to Bohner & perhaps 1 (?) other ranking Republican but that both said they had prior commitments.

If that was the case (I’m assuming here that they didn’t decline because they wouldn’t have wanted to participate), I do think the organizers perhaps should have tried harder to find some other voices from the other side of the aisle to participate. It did come off as a Democratic party affair, making it appear to be a bit partisan, unfortunately. 😦

  5. Very troubled by the references on FB to people’s relatives, particularly special forces, being activated. Ship’s movements, and surely army, air force and marine movements, are classified. Everytime some well-meaning relative posts a prayer request with a name or a unit, they’ve just given away the store.

And put their loved ones into even more danger.

It’s driving me crazy, but I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings, so I posted a general advisory. Who knows if anyone will heed it.

But this makes me think, and I can’t believe I’m saying this, that you don’t hear about military movements out of any other country. No one else’s relatives in say, Iran, is posting about where their family member is headed in their uniform.

Can you make a case that the loose lips of too many Americans put millions into danger?

    😦

    What’s the answer?

How abot those who have security clearances don’t say anything. Wouldn’t that help?

After all, we now know Syria is moving their military into schools and hospitals. Now, there’s a nation that knows how to protect the elites . . . . 😦

  6. ricky — If I’m not mistaken thats the Red Army Choir. Heavily subsidized by the state, it would not be able to survive commercially. Eastern Europe including Russia has its own version of trashy pop stars.

  7. Michelle- Why worry about fb references when the Commander-in-Chief has already told the “enemy” what we’e up to? Just like when Bush told Hussein he had so many days/weeks to get rid of his WMD or we would do it for him. Where did all that alleged WMD go? Most likely it is went to Syria or some other Arabic ally of Hussein.

  8. Looks like Obama is going to Congress after all

Peter L — there never were any WMD, Hussein ended the program in 1992. And he had no allies in the region. Even the Syrians wanted nothing to do with him, they were/are friends with Iran and thus not with Iraq.

  9. Donna, I had heard that Bohner and other Republicans were invited at the last minute and didn’t have time to change prior commitments. I don’t know if that is true.
