What’s interesting in the news today?

Open Thread, as always.

Here’s a few to start.

Some of the Benghazi whistleblowers are bringing their whistles to the House next Wednesday. From TheHill

“Eyewitnesses with potentially damaging information on the Obama  administration’s handling of last year’s terror attack on the U.S. mission in  Benghazi will testify at a hearing next week, Republicans said.

The House oversight committee is holding a hearing next week that will “expose new facts and details that the Obama administration has tried to  suppress,” oversight chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) said Wednesday.

Two of Issa’s lieutenants said the witnesses at the hearing would include  federal employees with direct knowledge of the attack that killed Ambassador  Christopher Stevens and three other Americans in Libya.”

The White House would like to remind you that it was a long time ago. 🙄

Here’s an update on the military’s assault against Christians. And yes, Mikey Weinstein wants proselytizing to be a court-martial offense. From FoxNews

“Religious liberty groups have grave concerns after they learned the Pentagon is vetting its guide on religious tolerance with a group that compared Christian evangelism to “rape” and advocated that military personnel who proselytize should be court martialed.”

“The Military Religious Freedom Foundation is calling on the Air Force to enforce a regulation that they believe calls for the court martial of any service member caught proselytizing.

President Mikey Weinstein and others from his organization met privately with Pentagon officials on April 23. He said U.S. troops who proselytize are guilty of sedition and treason and should be punished – by the hundreds if necessary – to stave off what he called a “tidal wave of fundamentalists.””

““Someone needs to be punished for this,” Weinstein told Fox News. “Until the Air Force or Army or Navy or Marine Corps punishes a member of the military for unconstitutional religious proselytizing and oppression, we will never have the ability to stop this horrible, horrendous, dehumanizing behavior.””

I told you about the creative new accounting trick the govt will now use to boost the GDP numbers. But the “real” jobless rate remains over 10% in most states according to CNBC

“Two months from now, revised government estimates are likely to show that the economy is even bigger than the currently stated $15 trillion.

And while the numbers may make some blink or gasp, the mere size of gross domestic product won’t hide the reality that in terms of actual growth, this is also the worst economy in 83 years.

GDP growth is in the midst of its longest sub-3 percent annual growth rate since 1929, the beginning of the Great Depression, according to Bespoke Investment Group. The economy hasn’t topped 3 percent since 2005—before Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke took over—and is unlikely to do so this year.”

“Though employment has risen by 1.3 million over the past year, unemployment that counts the discouraged and underemployed, as well as the jobless (often called the “real” unemployment rate) has remained stubbornly high, at 13.8 percent of the workforce, according to the most recent count.”

And ObamaCare isn’t just costing you more for healthcare coverage through rising premiums. Other benefits are falling because of it as well. From InvertorsBusinessDaily

“Employer spending on benefits rose at the slowest pace on record in the first  quarter, as companies began bracing for higher health costs with next year’s launch of ObamaCare.

Total benefits, such as insurance and pension contributions, rose just 0.1%  vs. the end of last year, the smallest gain in Labor Department data going back to 2001. By comparison, payroll employment grew by a half-million, or 0.4%, in  Q1. So benefits-per-worker declined.

Total employee benefits provided outside of government jobs declined outright.”

Reid admits it’s rollout is turning into a train wreck, but they could fix it if they had more money. I won’t put on my shocked face because I’m not. From TheHill

“Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) says he shares colleagues’ concerns  that the Affordable Care Act could become a “train wreck” if it’s not  implemented properly.

Reid warned that people will not be able to choose  health insurance plans on government health exchanges if federal authorities  lack the resources to set them up and educate the public.”

“Reid warned the federal government is not spending enough money to implement the  law because of Republican opposition to ObamaCare.”

“The shortage of funding to implement the law has forced President Obama to shift  funds from other parts of the law.”

As expected, it’s already costing more than estimated, and that’s with next to nothing being paid out yet. FAIL.

  1. The military assault on evangelism won’t pass this time. It wasn’t meant to. It’s just the opening shot. That’s the way the Overton Window works. Take something that’s unthinkable, move it up to radical, and eventually through the steps to policy. As they did with same sex marriage and abortion. It’s just part of the plan. There’s always something in the mix.

  2. I don’t know Chas. As you know I grew up in Christian school where they had us memorizing Bible verses so that if the Russians or the Communists ever took over and took our Bibles we would know. They would ask us what I though were ridiculous questions about if you could only save one thing would you try to take your Bible. I never even imagined this coming from our own government.
Hopefully this will bring TRUE Christians of all flavors together. Scary times. Again, something I tried to put my head in the sand and pretend would never happen to me and mine.

  3. Last night I told my wife that my latest idea was the Cook Islands. She replied, “If we moved there I’d probably turn (very dark), but not as dark as I would if I got hit by fire and brimstone if we stay in the US.

  4. This is what is going to be outlawed in the Military.
    Mark 16:15-16
15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemne
Matthew 28: 18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore[c] and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
The preaching, teaching and talking of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the talking about how must someone be saved, with the repenting of sin (and what is sin) and the forgiveness power of Christ found at the Cross and the Word of God will be outlawed in the Military.

  5. this is not going to be stopped in the military, they are the testing ground, if all go well and society embraces it, they will take it nation wide.

  6. I’m of a mixed opinion on the wisdom of the Benghazi stuff, now. There may very well be security issues at stake that I don’t need to know about. I think I’d be fine with these hearings being behind closed doors and then with a recap once it’s been scrubbed by the intelligence folks–including Issa.

  7. It’s not a testing ground issue…just like all the other changes, it’s a back door effort to destroy the military. Most of the soldiers and sailors I have known would not stand for this…

  8. the reason it is a testing ground if they do it in the Military and there is no outcrt over it, (ABC, CBS,NBC, CNN, PBS will fight aginst talking about it) they then take it and apply it to all Gvernment Programs, State and Federal etc Jail’s, IRS, Grants etc.

  9. Michelle,

Hearings like this typically do their best to avoid classified stuff that shouldn’t be publicly outed. And that’s not what they’re after here. The coverup and why, is what they’re after. I don’t think that will be an issue.

  10. Boy! We sound like a bunch of Conspiracy Theorists! Of course, I believe in the Devil, the ultimate of Conspirators. Didn’t he conspire with a third of the angels in Heaven to overthrow God? Why do I think he has given up? I don’t, do you?

  11. How do you define proselytizing? Is it proselytizing if someone ask your opinion or if the other person is willing to listen? Or is it only proselytizing if someone is being pestered, intimidated or threatened? I worked for a Catholic organization in a predominantly Protestant area. Most of the employees were not Catholic. Proselytizing was against the rules yet we all felt free to discuss faith matters with each other as long as no one felt pressured or threatened and we were all civil about disagreements.
