What’s interesting in the news today?

Open Thread.

But first…..

Pravda could take lessons from these guys.

From FreedomWorks

“Back in 2010, an agreement between a pro-Obamacare foundation and a society of business journalists had been questioned as a ‘cozy propaganda arrangement’. This arrangement has recently continued through sponsorship funding and training efforts that will provide journalists with “specialized education in health care reporting”.

In the summer of 2010, the Commonwealth Fund, a self-described ‘progressive’ organization, announced a $15,000 grant being awarded to the Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW).  It was the third such grant awarded to the SABEW since 2007, but the first to have the express purpose of providing ‘a series of education programs focusing on aspects of the nation’s new health-care reform law.’

The organization has a history of reporting only favorable accounts of the Obamacare legislation, even being pointed to on numerous occasions by the White House. Additionally, the group has featured several revolving door relationships with staff members and fellows for the radical socialist, George Soros.  For example, Michael Vachon has served both at the Commonwealth Fund and as an advisor to Soros at his Open Society Institute.  Alice Huan-Mei Chen has been a fellow while also previously serving as a Soros Physician Advocacy Fellow.”

And this one. I’m a free-speech kinda guy. Yes, even offensive, childish speech. While I think it’s stupid, offensive, and just plain mean, he still has a right to say it. And we have the right to tell him he’s a jerk for saying it. But it sure appears as if the college went way overboard here, and probably violated his rights.

From TheDailyCaller

“A university inside the suburban sprawl of northeastern New Jersey has  suspended a student for comparing another student’s legs to “a pair of bleached  hams” in a YouTube comment, reports CBS New York.

School officials at Montclair State University allegedly determined that  Joseph Aziz, a 26-year-old graduate student, violated the school’s student code  when he published the derogatory comment.”

“On Oct. 9, CBS New York says, officials at Montclair State issued a no-contact  order — basically a restraining order — obligating Aziz to avoid “written,  verbal, or electronic contact; physical or ‘in-person’ contact, or contact by  third parties” with the female student. The order also barred Aziz from  contacting the other student on social media, and even mentioning her on social  media.”

“A member of the private Facebook group reportedly sent copies of Aziz’s comments  to Montclair State officials, and school officials suspended him for the semester. The administration also threatened him with arrest if he sets foot on  campus during that time, according to the Foundation for Individual Rights in  Education (FIRE), a national civil liberties group that has thrown its hat in  with Aziz.”

And here’s the original CBS story as well.

So what do you think?

  1. Oklahoma has joined the growing number of states making it a state felony for any Federal official attempting to subvert the 2nd amendment to the constitution:

The “Oklahoma 2nd Amendment Preservation Act” is now working its way through the Oklahoma legislature.

Introduced by state senator Nathan Dahm, this legislation puts Oklahoma shoulder-to-shoulder with Wyoming and Texas by putting federal gun-grabbers in check.

The language of the legislation is clear: “Federal acts, laws, orders, rules, regulations, bans or registration requirements regarding firearms constitute an infringement on the individual right [to keep and bear arms] in the Constitution of the United States…and are hereby declared to be invalid in the State of Oklahoma.”

The legislation mentions the “intent” of America’s “Founders” and the Constitution’s “ratifiers,” and sets forth the punishment for trying to enforce new gun control measures:

Any official, agent, or employee of the United States government or any employee of a corporation providing services to the United States government that enforces or attempts to enforce an act, order, law, statute, rule or regulation of the government of the United States in violation of this act shall be guilty of a felony and upon conviction…shall be punished by imprisonment in the custody of the Department of Corrections not to exceed five (5) years.

After reading this legislation, only one word comes to mind–FREEDOM.

There is a rally hosted by Governor Falin on the state capital grounds in support of the legislation. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol has stated that Open Carry is permitted for the rally.

  2. More on the inaugural prayer:

“… What happened to Giglio last week at the hands of the Obama administration is disappointing, but not surprising. Jesus promised that the world would hate His disciples. In America, up until now, Christians have largely been spared the hate.

“But the day for hate is coming and quick. The response of the secular press to Giglio’s “outing” was swift and harsh. When a compassionate Christian social activist like Giglio is called ‘an unrepentant bigot’ on the editorial page of the Washington Post, times are changing fast. …”

  3. I have not been keeping up so this may have already been addressed, is it a fact that NY passed its weapons bans and forgot to exempt the police?

  4. More from the article (written by Jimmy Scroggins, pastor of First Baptist Church in West Palm Beach):

“…Believers should note that it was not Giglio’s tone, his language, or any homophobic actions that the inaugural committee and the secular press found objectionable – it was his beliefs. Go back and listen to his sermon – it’s still available online. The truth is that Giglio’s old sermon isn’t embarrassing at all. It’s sound, compassionate, and clear. It’s biblical preaching on an urgent topic. The man who preached that sermon was willing to stand for the Gospel and some of its most potent and pertinent implications for our times. All of us need to learn to preach like that.

“In the coming days, all Christian leaders will be forced to choose a side on issues that flow from the Gospel – including biblical teaching on sex and marriage. Intentionally avoiding clarity will not do. None of us will be allowed to take a pass.”

“A troubling oversight has been found within New York State’s sweeping new gun laws.

The ban on having high-capacity magazines, as it’s written, would also include law enforcement officers.

Magazines with more than seven rounds will be illegal under the new law when that part takes effect in March.”

  6. You’re both right! A Texas coyote could likely whip a New Mexico mountain lion, and a Texas jackrabbit is about the size of a kangaroo. Nevertheless, it is embarrassing for the governor to have a wimpy dog. He needs to go back and watch Old Yeller and Savage Sam.

  7. DrivesGuy, while the Second Amendment ensures that we may bear arms, it is hardly absolute. Governments have the right to regulate the bearing of arms. That Oklahoma law, while populist, assumes an absolute right and would correctly be refuted by the federal court.

I own hand guns and rifles and have no problem with reasonable gun regulation, Oklahoma paranoid ideology to the contrary notwithstanding.

  8. Sails, Good to hear from you. As a states rights advocate, I agree with you that the states have the right to regulate guns, and since I believe that the 14th amendment was never effectively adopted, I don’t have to worry about it applying 2nd amendment restrictions to the states.

However, I must defend my Oklahoma friends. Down here Texans are the extremists. I would call Oklahomans “moderates” , but that would get me in trouble with Drives. I can tell you that Oklahoma City has a street named for Phil Sheridan. That would never happen south of the Red River.

  9. I believe the last few massacres (Virginia Tech, Colorado and Connecticut) have been committed by nuts. One way to keep guns away from nuts is to put nuts in institutions as was done until a generation ago.

In the past we put nuts in unpleasant institutions. Now we give them drugs and a disability check. Bad governmental policies and poor parenting has sharply increased the number of nuts.

  10. HRW, I will tell you what a Militia is. Have you ever heard of the Hew and Cry? Look it up and since you are Canadian, I figured that the Hew and Cry might help you better understand where the militia comes from.

As to your comments about how we American’s choose to run our lives, maybe you should read the Federalist Papers along with the News Paper Articles published in defense of the Federalist Papers and the Constitution.

We do not adhere to English Common Law here. We are Americans not royalists or parliamentarians.
