Good Morning! 9-2-12

Good afternoon. I realized this morning that we hadn’t decided on a Sunday Open Thread, so I thought I would go ahead and post one. It’s late, but today we had church as I’m sure most of you did/do as well. I’m blessed to have a great church in which to worship and praise God in.  I spoke with someone this morning about being a part of something I’m planning. I’m really excited. I’ll post more about it later this week, and what to expect. I can’t wait!

Have a great day!

Quote of the Day

“I hope I shall possess firmness and virtue enough to maintain what I consider the most enviable of all titles, the character of an honest man.”

  1. Chas, you’re missing your face again.

This is a rare Sunday in which I am missing church, which I hate. But I was on such a push yesterday to reorganize and deep clean the kitchen, that I actually was up until 2:30 a.m. ! I had a feeling I might not be bouncing out of bed in time for church today.

I’ll listen to the sermon on Sermon Audio later today, give my friend a call to see what all happened. As it was I still only got about 6 hours of sleep — but feel much better now after a shower. I did a LOT yesterday with only some of the more peripheral things left to deal with.

Since I’m working the holiday shift tomorrow (always can use the OT, don’t you know), I’m going to try to take it a lot easier today, read some Scripture and maybe take a nap later.

But I always hate missing church. 😦

  2. We had a baptism in the service this morning. The young lady had been coming to church for about a year. I am so glad she came to this decision. She sits near me in church so I see her frequently for meet and greet. God is good. The angels are singing in heaven!

  3. Well, I will try again. I used to be called “Random Name” on World mag blog, before I was kicked off, about 20% for good reason and about 80% because Christians can’t stand competiion in evangelizing nonsense. I called myself a “Radical Agnostic,” but as I get older and closer to dementia (which used to be called senility), I become less tolerant of nonsense such as religious belief. I participated for about five years on wmb, but I suspect I will be kicked off in five minutes. I am not sure what my name is here, and I doubt this post will appear as a comment, but I will try one more time (unless I have double-posted).

By the way, there is no God, and if He existed, He would be a monster. There, that should burn me in Hell for sure.

  4. I exist! Ignore me! My daughter is celebrating her 20th anniversary of being coupled with another woman. They have an eight-year-old daughter who considers it perfecty normal to have two mommies who live in Seattle and two daddies who live in Chicago. Also, the world is overpopulated, though China’s solution is too draconian. Abortion should be legal but rare. There I think I have covered most of the heresy bases. Goodbye.

  6. I cannot keep myself out of the kitchen now. So I’ve cleared off the ledge back near the dog’s station (which consists of an old, beat-up butcher block table — with a deep tin flower bin below the bottom drawer) at the back of the kitchen.

Finding new uses for old things, new places for other items — organizing it so that the things I really do use are handier, things I don’t use very often getting tucked away in overhead or lower cabinets.

And I brought out some of the old yellow ware mixing bowls from a bottom cabinet — some from my mom’s, including what was always used as the (real) whipping cream bowl from the 1800s, some I bought at antique stores years ago — for display on the yellow desk hutch I bought in Mexico.

I haven’t had the old bowls out in so long, it’s a whole new look again (ala “Country Living”) in the kitchen.

For some reason, I love those old beat up, heavy pottery mixing bowls.

It also frees up more cabinet and cupboard space, which I needed.

More things going into the ‘give-away’ bag, too.

  7. Hi, Random Name, nice to meet you. I’d been reading at WMB for about a year and posting for three months before the end of the blog portion. Your name had been mentioned, but I do not recall having seen it in the time I was reading there. Thank you for introducing yourself here.

  8. At church this morning the sermon was on God’s work in our lives after we are saved. When we are saved we are washed clean but we still have rough edges that we need to work on, or rather that God works on, to make us more and more like Him. And if we see rough edges in other believers’ lives we need to help them in their journey and not judge them.

My sister turns 18 today and I gave her a $20 gift card for Berean Christian Bookstore.

Enjoying the long weekend with an extra day off work. Right now I’m having a lazy afternoon reading Marco Rubio’s autobiography An American Son. Oops, can’t discuss that here, it should belong in the News/Politics thread. Tomorrow I’m going to watch the Cleveland Air Show with other young people from church.

    They’re always closed on Sunday.
But Hendersonville is having the Big Apple Festival this weekend.
Hot Dog World is open today after church.
The workers are working free -almost all kin.
Everything they clear today is going to local charity.

    Welcome back, RN!

  11. Well, well, well, if it isn’t Random Name. Nice to see you. Now don’t make me ban you. 🙂

I note you came in guns blazing, just in case. Relax, enjoy yourself. You have alot to catch us up on. Believe it or not, many of us have missed you.

    EVERYONE,

Tomorrow I plan a post on what I’d like to do here with your help. We enjoy a unique relationship here, one of friendship and conversation. I have some ideas about what can be added to make it better, and to give it a greater purpose than simply being a “social club” for lack of a better term. The thing that has brought us all together was our relationship with Christ, and a desire to interact with others of like mind. We were introduced to each other on a Christian blog. I would like a blog where Christ is obvious to anyone visiting. In order to do that best, there are certain topics I will avoid. That doesn’t mean you can’t post whatever you want, and discuss topics I chose to avoid. You are free to interact without censorship by me, even if it’s not a topic I want to talk about. But I have set some limits on myself, and what I’m willing to do. I see this as a chance to do something meaningful combined with something I’ve always wanted to do. I’m excited.

    More tomorrow.

Now you’ve done it! I think you will make a great web publisher too. :–)

  15. Good afternoon everyone,
Here we had wonderful services this morning, with good practical stuff we can use. Sunday school was on oppression as a stubbling block to those who are ignoring the relavence of God in their life. We also learned about our behavior to those who are suffering oppression. The sermon was on Joseph: Dream to Dream. Six sections of his life and how they related to somebody’s dream. The application that touches me is that we will face adversity, but we must look to God and keep a good attitude.

  16. Hi Random,

I actually remember you being on kind of a mission to get yourself banned from WMB and it seemed to take a lot more effort on your part than you expected it to to make it happen. And since I’m nowhere close to dementia, I’m trusting my memory on this one over yours.

Also, if the likes of Arcadia could make it to the end without getting herself banned, you can hardly accuse the moderators of being trigger happy when it comes to banning atheists and other non-Christians.

But everyone is so happy to have you back that they’re all willing to humor you by not challenging your interpretation of what went down. 😉

  19. Hi Random! Good to have you back!

Matt Y, I hope the air show there goes better than the one near here (Davenport, IA) recently. I didn’t go, but a friend on FB posted videos of the crash. I think it’s things like that that keep me from wanting to go to an air show – I can’t see the entertainment in watching people do risky stunts, even if they don’t usually end in a fiery crash.

I had the rare opportunity to sit with my husband in church today. He is on vacation, so we had a guest speaker. (There was a bit of an awkward few moments as the ushers stood at the front waiting for the guest speaker to give them the offering plates, but the speaker was off to the side talking to the lay liturgist and didn’t notice them standing there. My husband said that will make people glad to have him back next week. 🙂 )

The speaker read an excerpt from a book by a pastor, recounting what God taught him from a situation when he was fired by church (for having the wrong views on eschatology), then hired by another church that he thought was too fundamentalist and they were concerned he was too liberal, but they called him anyway (something about God using them to teach him). It was a very good story, though unfortunately for my son it mentioned some people dying, and he ended up in tears over it.

  22. Pauline – At our church, we don’t pass plates for the offering. We have 2 baskets up front for people to “bring” their offerings to. There’s one man who, after putting his check in the basket, kneels, bows his head, & raises a hand in praise. It is a brief gesture, but when I happen to notice it, it touches me.

Something weird is going on with the page as I type, & I see a red “ge” & then a black “)” below the comment box. Let’s see if anything strange happens when I post this.

I say this way overdue: Thin to Win. The article talks about how fat defensive linemen are losing weight to be faster, since there are more passing plays than before. They need to get to the backfield faster. Plus, overweight former players have far more heart attacks than normal people.

Hurray! I get sick of seeing players with huge guts hanging over their belt line. I always thought athletes are supposed to be healthy looking. I look forward to the new look on the line.

Somebody asked about pets. My wife and I have five chickens, named Big Mama, Moll, Lucy, Kate, and Blackie #2. I have started an atheist church (wrong word) and I am the pastor. Wrong word, also. Mostly, the flock (up to about 10 or so) says to the pastor (me), “Just sit down and shut up!” But they keep coming. Do you ever say that to your reverends? I must have missed something in theology (atheism) school. Bye. The chickens need to go to bed.

  28. Wow. There’s been more than one occasion in my life where I go away (on vacation, move to a new town, stop frequenting a weblog, etc.) and when I come back, there have been big changes. Just learned about this one yesterday morning.

    Oh: HI ALL!

Sorry, but to me, World’s implementation of their new comments policy seemed rather sudden. Three days? Really? Oh well, is not that which belongs to me mine to do with as I please?

Just a couple real quickies before bedtime:

HI RANDOM NAME! Thanks for “Flight From Death” a couple of years ago … but I still haven’t watched it! :embarrassed:

    … but I WILL!

AND MATT Y.: Do you live in Cleveland? I grew up in Garfield Hts., and attended a few Airshows at Burke Lakefront myself. One year — 76 or 77, mebbe? — I got to see two guys ditch a T-28 in Lake Erie when they lost power on takeoff. They were allright, but don’t know what happened to the plane.

G’nite, all. I hope to be around …

  30. Frank, three days notice seemed rather abrupt to me, too, especially since they say they’d been discussing the change for years. 34. Michelle, the book about genocide is called Blood and Soil: A World History of Genocide by Kiernan. Peter, at the moment I am focused on mundane (non-religious) ominus phenomena. For example, I am reading Sudden Loss by a religious believer and Cascade’s Fault by a CBC documentary producer (religious affiliation unknown). Both books document how a massive earthquake and tsunami will probably devastate the Puget Sound area. Last one was Jan 28, 1700. In the US, it only wiped out a few aboriginal peoples, so they surely did not go to Heaven. They were only savages, you know. These seem to happen every 300 years or so, so this may be the last comment I ever type. Good bye. Though we do have a 500 gallon supply of emergency water stored outside our house and an emergency generator stored in our basement, and we live a couple of miles (uphill) from the ocean. I doubt I will have any Internet for a long time. And I haven’t said a prayer in my life, and I doubt I will be saying prayers when I die.

I was thinking that there are very few sites out there that don’t allow people to comment unless they subscribe. I get the feeling WM is cutting others out because they don’t care to hear their views. And though I would probably have subscribed again if I they had indicated they needed more subscribers, they specifically said that was not the case. Rather they indicated they were pandering (my word) to current subscribers who dislike the wide variety of views and/or topics.

I’m still thankful for the forum they provided, but I’m not interested in being a member of a select ‘club’ of hardcore Republican Christians who pretty much march in unison. I like the variety of views. I found that I sometimes disagreed with you, but you did add a lot of substance to the conversation. Stick around and get in on the ground floor of something new.

  41. I think the way it was explained by the WM editor was that they had some long discussions about what their mission/ministry should be and that led to the subscriber-only policy.

They determined that the magazine/site mission was to edify the saints, to build up the Christian community (as opposed to being an evangelistic outreach site).

I tried getting back onto the site a few days ago and had no luck, but will try it again as I am a subscriber. I think the new website looks wonderful, much more polished than before.

  42. The new web-site is excellent. One can visit it daily and read excellent articles on a rich variety of world news with Christian views. Comments are available on all articles; by charging a modest amount for online subscriptions World discourages agnostic and atheist trolls from infesting the site.

    Like

  43. Sails, $35 a year for an online site doesn’t really seem like a “modest amount.” (I don’t currently pay that much for print subscriptions to any magazines.) And I hardly see the necessity of keeping atheists and agnostics out–some of the draw, to some of us, was that unbelievers were freely interacting with believers!

    Like

  44. Cheryl, “interacting” is rather a euphemism for the sort of rot that fouled the World Mag blog from such scabrous characters as Seaglass, Arcadia, HRW, and Random Name, the latter of whom has now emerged from his well deserved exile.

  45. Sails- Some of us don’t have opportunities to interact with “scabrous” characters, so this is it. If you don’t want to interact with them, then skip their posts and don’t reply to them. Besides, most of the ones you mention are rather civil here. Not sure on Seaglass, as I don’t recognize that moniker.

  46. Sails, I think some of us were on WMB mostly for the Whirled Views thread. I didn’t go there to keep up with and discuss the news, though I did some of that, I was there because I was drawn into this community of assorted people. It makes perfect sense to me that World discontinued that, but it left us without a place to do what Whirled Views did.

As far as the subscription price, I could afford it, but just as Whirled Views doesn’t fit World’s priorities, commenting on World’s news doesn’t fit my financial priorities, especially without the Whirled Views feature.

AJ always posted links to articles that interested him, and it looks like we’ll have a chance here to discuss the news too, so I throw in my lot with this enterprise.
