  2. It took a pandemic for Zuby to learn those simple things about humanity?

Curious since I can’t read the NYT article — why is the Capitol Police expansion assumed to be a leftist move? Most leftist I know don’t want to expand any police force. Besides, there already is a nationalized police — the FBI. The left and the FBI do not have a cordial history to say the least.

A mea cupla — my stats yesterday were based on a USA Today article that combined all gun violence. The actual rate of gun homicides is 50 per day (based on roughly 20, 000 murders not the 40, 000). Given most violence occurs on weekends — 150 on Saturday and Sunday is only a slight rise and with the realm of “normal”. I still say its a squirrel compared to a violent afternoon in which the national legislature was stormed, 5 people died, and over 150 police are still claiming injury benefits (I’m a little suspicious of the latter numbers but thats because I don’t trust cops and their disability claims in general). Lets say there was 30,000 people there that afternoon — that’s an extremely high rate of violence compared to 150 murdered per 350 million.

I did learn something new though — the gun related suicide rate in the US is insanely high as is gun related violence in general. The US ranks 17th in the world in gun homicide (only behind South America and Caribbean countries) and 1st in the world in suicide by firearm. The next lowest western developed country is Canada at 0.5 homicides by gun compared to the US at 4.46 per 100,000. As for suicide — its over 7 per 100 000 in the US compared to a group of European/Cdns at about 2 per 100,000. The homicide rate is based on 2017 data…given the US homicide grew for the first time in decades it should be slightly higher now. The availability of guns is definitely a factor in the US suicide rate — at 1.2 guns per person, its too readily available as a successful way to commit suicide

  3. hwesseli, I figured that your numbers were wrong but didn’t have time to do the research and correct them. Thanks for doing so.

I think the event on January 6 was stupid, and I think Trump’s involvement in it was stupid. But the idea that it was some super-violent event in which five people died is simply false. And as someone who lived in Chicago for 14 years (and who would not want to live there today in its greater level of violence) I can say decisively that comparing the Capitol “violence” with gun violence in our worst cities is apples and oranges. Most gun violence is committed by gangs (and, yes, suicide) in cities that already have strict gun laws. Other weapons are often used as well, including knives and bricks. Guns themselves are not the problem.

  4. It never occurred to me that suicides and accidents were half of all gun related deaths — that’s extraordinary high. To some extent, guns are the problem but I agree there is more to it than that — other than Canada; the Americas are extremely violent, despite high levels of gun ownership in the Nordic countries shooting deaths are rare, etc. At the same time, having guns within arm’s reach makes it too easy to shoot. Drugs are not really the problem but leaving them within easy reach of an addict is not a good idea. Similar leaving guns within easy reach of those prone to violence is not a good idea.

However, my point was a reply to AJ’s tweet post. The tweet compares gun violence across the US to the capitol riot to imply (and AJ agrees) that gun violence is the real and extraordinary problem. As I attempted to point out, the gun violence in the US is not new nor was the July 4th weekend extraordinary (just remembered it was your long weekend — makes the rate even more average) in terms of numbers. Unfortunately its just a normal weekend. On the other hand, storming the legislature is an extraordinary event, one which demands attention. The squirrel which AJ mentions is actually the normal levels of violence over the weekend.which is used to distract from the extraordinary event. Was the capitol riot/insurrection (or whatever) a bit farcical; yes but its still unusual and needs to be explained and prevented from occurring again.

Other than the rise in violent crime in 2020 (too early to ascribe blame but I’m going with the whole year being dysfunctional and aggravated by bad leadership), violent crime has been going down for decades. In 1992 there were 943 murders in Chicago by the mid 2000s it was down to 415, there’s been an increase in recent years to 560. Not sure when you lived in Chicago but its probably safer now then it was then.

  5. So one city (Chicago) has hit the national avg of 50 a day by themselves, but you don’t see a problem?

Oh that’s right, it’s mostly black on black, so you lefties turn a blind eye. It’s only a problem when a cop shots one.

The Jan 6th event was a joke. You don’t take over the govt without bringing guns. And funny thing, no one brought any guns. Well except for the cowardly cop who shot an unarmed women so ascared for his life, he was.

    $#@$@$$#@ coward.

Jan. 6th is a non-event that only the left and RINOs are still whining about, because Trump, well they just can’t quit him.

Spare me. You continue to dismiss actual Antifa and BLM riots and violence as protests, yet a relatively peaceful one on the 6th has your panties in a bunch.

Sorry, I can’t take your assertions with any seriousness. They’re undeserving.

  7. In one sense, one could question why an investigation is even necessary. The PA Supreme Court acted illegally when they changed election law in the state – they had no authority under the US Constitution. The Constitution delegates the authority to create election laws at the state level to the state Legislature, not the state Judicial branch. This entire election in PA’s past election day was illegal.

The process of starting an audit needs to be made much simpler, and this PA audit is way overdue. There were 202,377 more votes cast than voters voting. If that doesn’t indicate fraud by Dem election operatives on behalf of Biden, then nothing does.

And whatever happened to the truck trailer full of ballots that went from NY into PA and unloaded in a parking lot?

Keep it coming – expose the fraud!!!

    https://www.theepochtimes.com/mkt_breakingnews/pennsylvania-senate-chairman-initiates-forensic-probe-of-2020-2021-elections_3890927.html

“A Pennsylvania senator announced on July 7 that he has triggered a forensic investigation of the 2020 and 2021 elections.

State Sen. Doug Mastriano, a Republican, issued letters to several counties requesting information and materials that he said would enable an investigation.

“It’s distinct from an audit or forensic audit. It’s a big deep dive, like we saw in Arizona, but even deeper,” Mastriano told The Epoch Times.

“It takes a hard look at software, machine, scanners, in addition to looking at all the ballots themselves to see if they were hand-filled in or copied by a machine. So a scientific approach to get to the bottom of what happened, what went right, what went wrong in an election. It takes out all bias.””

“Some Journalists Reportedly Afraid to Return to Capitol Building After the ‘Insurrection’”

    https://legalinsurrection.com/2021/07/some-journalists-reportedly-afraid-to-return-to-capitol-building-after-the-insurrection/

“At the beginning of Trump’s presidency, we were told that journalists are like brave firefighters running towards the burning building. Now we are told that journalists are still suffering from supposed trauma over the Capitol riot on January 6th.

Some reporters can’t even find the strength to reenter the building. Poor them.

Cameron Joseph reports at VICE News:

‘So, So Angry’: Reporters Who Survived the Capitol Riot Are Still Struggling

John Bresnahan spent January 6 watching a pro-Trump insurrection ransack the building he’s worked in for decades.

The congressional reporting veteran was in the House gallery when a colleague texted him that the Capitol’s exterior security fence had been overrun. As soon as he stepped into the hallway, he heard the roar of the crowd as they warred with police officers trying to protect the Capitol’s perimeter…

Bresnahan, a Navy veteran who has covered Congress since 1994 and co-founded the D.C. newsletter Punchbowl News, said returning to the Capitol after the riots was difficult.

“The next day, I was so angry. So, so angry,” he said.

Reporters have discussed their personal experiences in the days immediately following the Capitol insurrection. But few have publicly talked about the lasting effects in the months since—the toll that day took on them, the difficulty some have faced in returning to a site where they experienced trauma, and what it’s been like covering a Congress still deeply divided on the events of that day.

And the emotional scars are still there. Six months after their office was attacked, the Capitol Hill press corps is grappling with how to cover the insurrection’s fallout, as well as its impact on them personally and professionally.
Have you noticed that our media goes from mocking Trump supporters and other Republicans as stupid and powerless in on breath, and then in a shaky voice talk about how terrified they were by the unarmed mob at the Capitol?

Of course, other people were traumatized last year for different reasons and they have been almost completely ignored by our self-obsessed media:”

  12. The Jan 6th event was farcical but you never treat an attack and successful breach of legislative security as a joke. In addition it occurred to stop a certification of the presidential vote. A breach in security and an attempt to stop a presidential vote should be taken serious no matter how farcical the actual effort.

I have no idea whether the violence is black on black — didn’t’ see any mention of race. As an outsider looking in, I find the violence in the US, a western developed country, incredible. The race aspect is also something that’s rarely considered here so I wouldn’t think about whether Chicago was black on black violence. But as I stated before, the murder rate is far lower than it was in the 70s to 90s; so something is working or at least there’s less to worry here than some pundits might think.

Thanks for telling me the Biden admin is continuing the US’s long relationship with Saudi Arabia. I’m not surprised. Democratic or Republican, being friends with the Saudis has been a cornerstone of US foreign policy since at least Reagan. Only Carter had principles. In the last few years, Israel has moved from Turkey to aligning with the Saudis as their Middle East partner. Saudi-Israel-US as partners is no surprise — its an anti-Iran alliance. Its the wrong move for the Biden admin but not unexpected and if he didn’t, the criticism from Republicans and even some Democrats would be endless. Am I outraged? No, to be outraged would mean I expected Biden foreign policy to be different and it won’t be……again only Carter had principles and I doubt we’ll see a principled president like Carter again (btw the Carters are celebrating their 75th wedding anniversary)

  13. Oh there’s drama and not a little bit of disability insurance fraud — 150 police claiming some type of injury physical and mental. Although some police officers admitted the most upsetting part of the riot was the fact it was “their” side attacking them. So I have little sympathy. Yet the breech in security needs to be investigated — why was it so ineffective? why unprepared? why did some policemen move the barricades? etc etc.

I am surprised you are minimizing the actions of a man fighting the police — you resist or fight police you will be charged with assault at the very least.
