  1. An interesting find….

    https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/dead-sea-scrolls-discoveries-are-first-ancient-bible-texts-be-n1261182

“Dead Sea Scrolls discoveries are first ancient Bible texts to be found in 60 years

A 6,000-year-old skeleton of a partially mummified child and a 10,500-year-old basket were also discovered.”

“A new set of Dead Sea Scrolls, ancient fragments of biblical texts dating back almost 2,000 years and thought to have been hidden during a Jewish revolt against Rome, have been found in the West Bank.

The Israel Antiquities Authority announced Tuesday that a four-year archaeological project uncovered portions of the Book of the Twelve Minor Prophets, including the books of Zechariah and Nahum. It was the first such discovery in 60 years.

Also uncovered was a 6,000-year-old skeleton of a partially mummified child and a 10,500-year-old basket, which Israeli authorities said could be the oldest in the world. A CT scan revealed the child’s age was between 6 and 12 — with the skin, tendons and even hair partially preserved.

Among the recovered texts, which are all in Greek, is Nahum 1:5–6, which says: “The mountains quake because of Him, And the hills melt. The earth heaves before Him, The world and all that dwell therein. Who can stand before His wrath? Who can resist His fury? His anger pours out like fire, and rocks are shattered because of Him.”

The authority said these words differ slightly from other Bible versions, shedding a rare light on how biblical text changed over time from its earliest form.

The first set of Dead Sea Scrolls to be discovered were found by a Bedouin shepherd in the same area in 1947 and are considered among the most important archaeological finds of the 20th century, although biblical scholars disagree on their authorship.”

  4. BTW, I never really celebrated St. Patrick’s Day and remember my mom saying why should we since we are not Irish. Just recently I did find out I do have some Irish ancestry. If we go back far enough we are all related. All those whining about cultural appropriating might be surprised like some of the black folks who find out they were slave holders way back when. Or the white folks who find out they had slaves in their family line way back when. It is beyond sad to see all this deliberate dividing of people into groups.

  5. Oh my word…an “Irishman” triggered by someone wearing green or wearing a “kiss me” button. What a miserable person he must be to have nothing better than to be offended.
    I’m Irish…and German…and French…Dutch…and who knows what else…I think I’ll just celebrate life and living…and the goodness of our Lord 💚 ☘️

  6. https://www.theepochtimes.com/italy-launches-criminal-manslaughter-investigation-after-teacher-dies-hours-after-getting-astrazeneca-vaccine_3735806.html?utm_source=morningbrief&utm_medium=email&email=hkoebele7@yahoo.com&utm_campaign=mb-2021-03-17

“Italian officials have begun a manslaughter investigation following the death of a 57-year-old music teacher hours after receiving AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine, according to local media reports.

Officials have so far said there is no evidence of a direct link between the man’s death and his shot.

Prosecutors in the northern Italian region of Piedmont announced they opened a manslaughter probe into the death of Sandro Tognatti, who received the vaccine in his hometown of Biella on March 13. His wife told news outlets that he went to bed that night with a high fever. The next day, she said, an ambulance was called for him, and he later died.

The local prosecutor in Biella, where Tognatti lived, announced the opening of a criminal case for manslaughter after his death, Italy’s La Repubblica newspaper reported.

Teresa Angela Camelio, the prosecutor, announced that the move “follow[s] the decision of the Piedmont Region to suspend ‘momentarily’ the administration of the AstraZeneca vaccine included in batch ABV5811, pending the decisions of the judicial authority and the drug supervisory commission.””

  9. I assumed it was parody.

Reminds me somewhat of Kingsblood Royal by Sinclair Lewis in 1947. A middle class white guy finds out he is black somewhere in the deep past. Ends up having to move out of his white’s only home into the “colored section”. Bizarre how we humans can look at each other through the strangest lenses.

  11. Today is also St. Gertrude’s Day. She was the patron saint of cats and those who love them. I was delighted to learn this a few years back because my Aunt Gert was a cat-lover. 🙂

As for cultural appropriation, like so many things, the original concept had a point but the term was broadened to include things like the satire post above skewered.

Apparently, originally the view was that a white or American person could use a piece of another (minority) culture without a problem, but a person from that culture could not do the same without possibly facing some discrimination. The example often used is that a white woman wearing her hair in cornrows or dreadlocks would be considered cool, but a black woman with her hair like that would face discrimination in the job market. (There has been a push of late to legislate against that.)

I guess a good way of putting it is that it is like the difference between laughing with someone vs. laughing at them.

But as we have all seen, some have taken the original concept and broadened it to include seemingly any use of another culture.

  13. Of course, my description of that is quite simplistic, and there is more to it. I like to think that in many ways what we engage in is more “cultural appreciation” than “cultural appropriation”.

  15. More about the survey in the note that is supposed to go out with it:

~ The guiding principle of this survey is the idea that your insights as a source are shaped by your experience and identity. Better understanding the demographics of our sources enables us to fulfill our responsibility as journalists – to represent the public.

Ultimately, this survey is part of a larger Google News Initiative funded project called Pass the Mic, focused on connecting journalists to verified expert sources from under-represented communities such as: people of color, LGBTQ+, female-identifying or nonbinary and/or disabled. Our final goal is to provide a user-friendly database, which can make it easier for journalists to find sources from under-represented communities. This survey is a crucial part of the research phase of the overall project. Answers from this short questionnaire will provide us with detailed demographic information of our named sources and inform us of the scale of our representation of sources in coverage.  ~
