“A new set of Dead Sea Scrolls, ancient fragments of biblical texts dating back almost 2,000 years and thought to have been hidden during a Jewish revolt against Rome, have been found in the West Bank.
The Israel Antiquities Authority announced Tuesday that a four-year archaeological project uncovered portions of the Book of the Twelve Minor Prophets, including the books of Zechariah and Nahum. It was the first such discovery in 60 years.
Also uncovered was a 6,000-year-old skeleton of a partially mummified child and a 10,500-year-old basket, which Israeli authorities said could be the oldest in the world. A CT scan revealed the child’s age was between 6 and 12 — with the skin, tendons and even hair partially preserved.
Among the recovered texts, which are all in Greek, is Nahum 1:5–6, which says: “The mountains quake because of Him, And the hills melt. The earth heaves before Him, The world and all that dwell therein. Who can stand before His wrath? Who can resist His fury? His anger pours out like fire, and rocks are shattered because of Him.”
The authority said these words differ slightly from other Bible versions, shedding a rare light on how biblical text changed over time from its earliest form.

Or the white folks who find out they had slaves in their family line way back when. It is beyond sad to see all this deliberate dividing of people into groups.

Today is also St. Gertrude’s Day. She was the patron saint of cats and those who love them. I was delighted to learn this a few years back because my Aunt Gert was a cat-lover. 🙂
As for cultural appropriation, like so many things, the original concept had a point but the term was broadened to include things like the satire post above skewered.
Apparently, originally the view was that a white or American person could use a piece of another (minority) culture without a problem, but a person from that culture could not do the same without possibly facing some discrimination. The example often used is that a white woman wearing her hair in cornrows or dreadlocks would be considered cool, but a black woman with her hair like that would face discrimination in the job market. (There has been a push of late to legislate against that.)
I guess a good way of putting it is that it is like the difference between laughing with someone vs. laughing at them.
But as we have all seen, some have taken the original concept and broadened it to include seemingly any use of another culture.

Of course, my description of that is quite simplistic, and there is more to it. I like to think that in many ways what we engage in is more “cultural appreciation” than “cultural appropriation”.
