  1. Kizzie, I laughed at your post yesterday quoting Boy. When #1 Son was in the 2nd grade I was driving him and a friend to our Lutheran elementary school. They were together in the back seat discussing recess when one of them said, “The girls always want us to play house or Barbies or games with them and all we want to do is hang on the fence and fart.”

  2. I take lots of notes when I read my bible. I just fill notebooks with them, instead of in a bible. Writing things down helps me remember them and think things through a bit more.

  3. Morning! It is a lovely morning in this forest. A tad bit breezy but the temps are in the 40’s 😊
The dentist will pop my implant in this morning…why it takes an hour and a half I don’t know but that’s what he is scheduling.
I take copious notes during sermons as it helps me to remember. I actually have a separate notebook I carry with me. When I am studying for our Bible study I take notes, underline and put little asterisk next to certain passages…that’s the way my brain is wired for memory 😊

  4. Good late morning!

I ventured out to Publix this a.m. When I am in the stores I see more of the people shopping for others than I see people shopping for themselves.

My brother called early to let me know that he voted. He is in a county that received anonymous emails about violence to occur at polling locations. I was relieved that he got it done safely. He spoke with several law enforcement people at the site. My brother will hardly let an opportunity pass to talk to people. He is such a born salesman.

  5. Just had the second of my extremely expensive injections. No word still on my surgery, but COVID cases are rising exponentially, making it likely it may be delayed.

A coworker told me yesterday that her brother and his wife had it, after they refused to wear masks and went visiting to multiple places against public health advice. She was very frustrated with him. I felt sorry for the public health officials having to do all that contact tracing.

  6. Bible notes: I copy verses on three by five cards, fully intending to memorize them. Instead, I keep them in the Bible and read them regularly as my ability to memorize is very stunted.

  7. me, too, Mumsee. but reading them over and over helps.
My daughter when she was in college memorized Ephesians. That still gives me hope.

Okay, I just successfully reset the password that I lost so now have access to my information. This is very frustrating.

Now on to try and find the right kind of covid test that has to be done the day before I leave, or two days and I need results in 24 hours. Am I too old to figure all of this out???

  8. Go for it Jo! You never know until you try!😀

Memorizing Bible verses becomes a bit easier with practice. I think what I do is to get the key words in mind and really understand what the verse is saying. Then I work on all the smaller words that can be trickier. I also memorize in phrases before putting it all together. That way it never seems overwhelming. Sometimes I turn the verse into a little song which is the best way to keep the verse in my brain.

  9. Janice, those are the strategies I use when helping my children memorize Scripture. They are working their way through Ephesians. But even with all that, my teflon brain resists. I do have some from my early years, memorized in song thanks to Second Chapter of Acts and other singing groups. But as Jo mentioned, reading them over and over does get them settled into the heart, not verbatim, but the gist.

  10. One thing that worked well for teaching children Bible verses was to use a mat with clear plastic pockets to hold each word in the verse. The children would toss a beanbag to land on a word to remove that word. They had to say the verse for each time they removed a word. It was a very pleasant game to use in Sunday school or Bible Drill. The large mats were sold by Lifeway or you could make your own using a shower curtain with taped on clear plastic pockets.

  11. Just got my now weekly COVID test. This is the only day off I have this week and it is too full to get a proper rest. Because of how they are making us in the clinic do home visits, the nurse who stays in the clinic is getting much more work to do. That was me yesterday, and I am still exhausted.

  12. Day 2 back at work. I am praying to be re-invigorated, I’m just feeling so detached and weary of everything right now, including the whole process of finding and writing stories. I turned one in yesterday and have another I’m working on today, but it’s tough going for some reason right now.

I dreamed I somehow acquired three little shaggy dogs, they were all related and different colors. But two of them escaped and became lost, so I was left with just the one who seemed to get along nicely with Tess and Cowboy.

I caught up on The Crown last night, looks like it’s approaching the Diana phase of the story, though I’ve read some of that isn’t particularly accurate in its portrayal.

  13. DJ, that is the way I felt yesterday and it scared me. Detached is not how you want to approach nursing. But I worked so hard through the holidays that the time I had off wasn’t enough to restore that strength.

  14. That should be the prayer request–that we might all reengage with the life God has put us into for His purposes.

I’d rather be reading and I’m not working hard jobs–mentally and physically in the public eye–like you are. xoxox

  15. Yesterday, the county north of us nearly lost all their vaccines when a freezer stopped functioning. They put out the word and basically vaccinated everyone who got there in time–rather than lose the vaccine.

So, all the medical professionals at the hospital, all the county officials, and everyone who lined up outside the building got a shot! 850 people vaccinated in about an hour.

I’m applauding their ingenuity–while they’re being eviscerated on social media.

    People have lost their minds.

  16. This thread has been good for me.

I got through college by reading the assigned texts and listening to the teachers; I never have written fast enough to take notes. i get so far behind that I lose what the teacher is saying. I just listen and remember!

Memorization? Hah! not MY strong suit!

Our number one son (adopted) had trouble when people talked with him. He often couldn’t understand what people said. We took him to a speech professor at Cal State L.A. She had a PhD from either the University of Florida or Florida State University. She said he probably understood about 60% of what he heard. There is a time in a baby’s life when the parents talk to the baby and get a response from the baby. Ricky’s mother was mad at his father. Rick has a fraternal twin, Ritchie. They have two older sisters. Mom may not have done this talking with babies very well.
Rick still has trouble understanding what people say to him.
Mary Anne found that telling him to do something after school often didn’t get done. She solved that by leaving posits just inside the door.

Turn on the oven to 350
Get the covered tray out of the refrigerator
    Put it in the oven

If one of your children has trouble following directions try writing them down.

Memory like a sieve? Write it down!
My memory of things to get at the store is 3 or less. Write it down!
Things my wife wants done? Write it down!
Things children do wrong or forget to do?

  17. This morning while at the store I remembered I had one simple thing I had meant to write down that I needed, but I had failed to write it down. I wandered slowly through the aisles trying to remember. Finally I was on the coffee and tea aisle which seemed it might be the right place. Finally, if popped up front to my brain that I needed coffee filters! I had almost left the store without them. I was not totally out of them so necessity was not pressing the item into my memory. I remembered all the other things I needed to get. I am trying to stock up more so I don’t have to go as frequently to the store.

  18. I’ve been known to go to the store because I’m out of something — and by the time I get home, I have other things I’d needed, but realize I don’t have the one thing I was actually out of that prompted the store visit in the first place

  19. Michelle, sometimes what is needed is not a reengagement but a rest. I am starting to really feel the side effects of this injection now, which, in brief, induces temporary menopause – to reduce to a manageable size what I need surgery for. So, I am going through menopause while endeavouring to deal with multiple issues on a professional and personal level, while in a workplace where management is being extraordinarily unsupportive of the stress the entire team is facing. They keep making new rules that make our job more complicated – they are now increasing the amount of redundant documentation they expect of us at a time when time is at a premium and constantly violating the union agreement regarding work assignment. Nothing is going to change with them. As all those of you who have already reached menopause know, mental and emotional changes are not entirely within one’s control and memory can be affected too. I made a fool of myself this morning when trying to indicate to the nurse on which side the injection should be given because I kept getting mixed up between right and left. The nurse however, was very understanding, and just commented that I needed a rest.

  20. I found one container of Lysol wipes and also some foaming Lysol spray. Art had asked me to get some spray disinfectant for the office. I used a sticky note to put on the spray can a warning that it is foaming cleanser. I imagined him not noticing that fact and spraying on the wrong surface (papers passed back and forth or something crazy like that).

  21. Our forgetful/ not listening children often have or had small notebooks in their shirt pocket. If only they would remember to look at them! But they often did especially while doing their rounds of chores outside. Writing lists and putting them on their doors does not seem to have worked.

  22. Whenever I try to make up a shopping list, I usually forget to write the one thing I really needed. When I lived on my own, I just had a general list of the items I needed to keep in stock on my phone, and would refer to it and then consult my memory to see if each thing was in low supply and needed replanishing. Since I was only one person, I knew exactly what I had used and had not used, and my diet was quite simple due to very limited storage space and very limited time to prepare.

  23. My mom would write everything down that I was to do after school and before she got home. She had to make it so detailed, it’s funny now. 1. Turn on the oven to 350F. 2. take the roast out of the paper and place it in the roaster. 3. put lid on the roaster 4. once oven is hot, place roaster on the top rack, etc. I really should have been able to remember those things (I had very good grades in school) but it seemed like whatever mom said went in one ear and out the other. I heard her, but it just didn’t register.

I find myself doing that now with husband and am trying to make a conscious effort to stop what I’m doing, look at him and then listen with more than just my ears.

  24. Art’s hearing is not as good as it once was. Now if I say something and he does not acknowledge it, I wonder if he heard me at all or if he is ignoring what I said. I don’t like having to use my ‘teacher’ voice with him, lol.

  25. Very pretty, Janice!

In my single days, every other week I would look at all the ads that came and choose one or sometimes two stores, based on who had sales on what I needed most. Then I’d take the ad paper and circle what I was going to buy that was on sale. Whatever wasn’t on sale, but I needed, I’d write at the top of the first sheet. I didn’t keep an ongoing shopping list; I’d just write what I knew I’d run out of, or items that worked with sale items to make a dish I hadn’t made in a while.

At the store, I’d start with the produce aisle (so that if they had anything that looked especially good, and I wanted to build a meal around it, I could), and I’d go down every aisle, or at least every aisle except non-food ones. I stocked up on items like peanut butter or tuna when they were on sale, and only bought them when they were on sale. Produce I bought when it was at a good price and looked good (seasonal), so I never put produce on my list unless I needed something for a specific recipe. If I saw tuna for a good price that hadn’t been on the ad (or that I hadn’t seen), I’d think about how many cans I had in my cupboard and buy accordingly. The system was thorough enough it was pretty rare I actually ran out of anything, or anything important enough to require another trip to the store in less than two weeks.

My husband shops very differently. When I married him, he was used to shopping every one or two days, bananas were on his “never out” list, and he would end with the produce rather than starting with it. So we had to work a lot of it out, including that I just do not want to go grocery shopping every single day. I got him to cut back to about twice a week, and if he wanted to go another time, usually he’d go without me. It worked.

And then Covid came along. We now make detailed lists; my husband looks up what aisle in the store everything is found in, and sorts the list accordingly, for the ease of our shoppers. We only ask them to shop every other week, and he generally gets Sam’s Club or Wal-Mart to send us foodstuffs that are non-perishable to limit what we are asking other people to buy. But I think it’s probably good that I’d moved us away from shopping five or six times a week.

  26. My sister had a sweet memory come up on her FaceBook yesterday that had her in tears.

Back story: Her husband’s family is very close. The matriarch is 98 years old and still going strong. She had 5 boys and 2 girls. Both girls are deceased, but one had a family before she passed away a few years ago. All the other children married and had at least two children, some had more. The next generation has married and now is having children themselves. So there are now great grandchildren of the matriarch. There are over 90 descendants of hers now. This family has a tradition of drawing names every Christmas and the person you draw is your prayer partner for the year and vice versa. And then at Christmas you give them a gift after praying for them and sharing requests all through the year.

My sister’s memory was of a post her niece (the one that passed away) thanking her for her children’s gifts. Indya, the 12 year old survivor, was four at the time and she had said “I love Uncle C, he is my best friend” and Aubrey described how she was eating her breakfast wearing the fairy outfit, wings and all. The fairy outfit was C’s Christmas gift to her after praying for her all year. Aubrey also thanked them for Remington’s gift of real tools. “He’s running around fixing everything”. So sweet.

  27. I received two lovely videos of my grand babies sleeping yesterday. So wonderful to watch their little facial movements and listen to the quiet noises they make. I can’t tell them apart when they aren’t in the same photo, even though they do look different. 🙂

  28. The neighborhood page, which has been so aggressively negatively lately I rarely read it, had interesting information about COVID antibody and regular testing at the local mall.

You can make an appointment, go in, and they’ll test you with results in 24-48 hours, or immediately, depending on the test. It’s a SIMON mall, for those possibly hunting a test.

    Insurance accepted.

They also noted that Hawaiian Airlines will test at the airport before your flight if you make an appointment–free. Very wise on the part of that airline.

  29. Oh, the header photo is one of a couple of species of bushes or shrubs in my area that turn lovely fall colors and then hold onto their leaves into late December or sometime in January, giving wonderful opportunities to photograph them in frost. I know where they grow and seek them out. 🙂 I sent AJ several shots with frost and Christmas colors, but didn’t get them to him till Christmas Eve, so we get some Christmas color in January.

Meander, toss in, pass up, go back, toss something else in, meander some more, realize I’d forgotten something on the other side of the store, go back, get that, then maybe check out at that point.

And realize I’d forgotten the ONE thing I came for.

  31. DJ, I could have been you at the store this morning. I often times make one pass through and then start thinking of what I may have forgotten. Then I am all over the place as the cliche says, “like a chicken with its head cut off.” Our neighborhood store is not supersized or I would be more organized about the foraging project.

  32. For those who send out large group emails, is there anything special for me to know before sending one out?
Do I just copy and paste a listing of names and addresses? How do I hide the names and addresses? I will be sending out group emails for a group of Christian writers in the Atlanta area.

  33. Michelle, you could just generate a list of prayer partners for your family and let them know what’s happening this year. Since they’re praying for each other, it’s not a secret 🙂

  34. Michelle, I am waiting for God to show me His plans. I am going for at least six months, but have already told them that I am willing to come for 1 1/2 years, depending on needs at the school. Since I know there are always needs at the school, that will probably happen. So after 1 1/2 years at age 73, it will be time to retire. I also said that I would serve where needed in the school so we will see what happens.

  36. Sad, Janice, and yes, just so much sadness it seems.

Memorizing whole chapters, books, or psalms is easier than memorizing a few verses. (I have never memorized a whole book, but know people who have. I have a whole lot of note cards filled with verses. Most are just as reminders or of something that just spoke to me. I have several long sections of scripture posted inside a kitchen cabinet door that is close to where I do dishes. I can glance at them whenever I am in the kitchen. Once you memorize a passage, you need to go through it periodically so you don’t lose it. I have a difficult time speaking a passage out loud to someone, but I can go through them quite well in my own mind.

The good thing is, that even if you are not memorizing, when you read the scripture over and over it affects your thinking in a wonderful way. We are so blessed to have the scripture at our fingertips.
