Luke 2:1-21

The Birth of Jesus

2 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2 (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 And everyone went to their own town to register.

4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,
    and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

21 On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived.

    Gene Au try wrote several great songs. “Back In the Saddle”, and likely the most famous sing of all time, “You Are My Sunshine”.
    but I’ll never forgive him for inventing Rudolph.

  4. Nobody else up and about here yet. Well, daughter headed off to work and usually deposits her daughter with me here because daughter wakes up when she gets ready to leave. But not this morning. The babies are all sleeping in.

  5. Mumsee- A Christmas miracle?

    Amos and I are up. Mr. P, BG, and Lulabelle are all still in their beds.

    Mr. P couldn’t stand it, so he had me open a present last night. It’s a weighted blanket. I put it on the bed and BG was in our room talking to us so she crawled under it at the foot of the bed. She and I agreed we like it.

    I am about to make blueberry muffins and be prepared for my sleepyheads.

  11. All of this talk on TV about an explosive that went of at 0600 hrs this morning.
    It hasn’t occurred to anyone, yet, that the setting was probably a mistake.
    The person who set it was supposed to set it to go off at 1800 hrs rather than 0600 hrs.
    To locate the culprit, they need to find an ignorant person who doesn’t know how the clock works.

  13. Paul and I have exchanged our presents. I got a solar powered water fountain. Something I have wanted ever since we moved in this house.
    BG got her presents and had breakfast. She is headed to her dad’s and will be back here at 3.
    We have video of Little Miss this morning.
    Mr P needs to get states on his Mac and cheese. The tenderloin is out coming to room temperature.

    Oh the ASPCA absolutely ruins songs. This year the are doing there best to ruin Dilent Night! Rant over.

  16. Morning and Merry Christmas.
    We had our celebration last night…daughter and family left around 11….I was beat! But it was fun and chaotic …. the grandchildren had fun and only broke one thing in the house…I fixed it this morning….
    Chas your post made us laugh….Paul cannot tolerate Autry’s Rudolph song…he rushes to turn it off of Pandora every time it plays…which is way too often! 😂

    Merry Christmas everyone.

    I’m not feeling well and am mildly concerned I may have Covid. Probably not, but … coughing, sore throat, fatigue and a weird tingling in my right shoulder that started up about 2 days ago. No fever though, so that’s good, right?

    Either way, I’m probably sticking close to the bed and couch today. I finished the obit (of course the family asked if they can read through it before it publishes — NO, an entire family of editors; against our policy). But I do still need to run a couple things by them, I’ll wait until tomorrow.

    I should probably see if I can get Covid-tested somewhere, if only for peace of mind. I’ve been careful — except for dashing in to get that haircut almost 2 weeks ago now.

  23. Merry Christmas!

    My husband and I both celebrated Christmas Eve growing up. But the girls grew up with two sets of local grandparents (three of the four have died in the last five or six years), and so they were used to going to one household Christmas Eve, the other Christmas morning, and doing their own household celebration in between, Christmas morning, and that’s what they wanted to do with us. This year we had just the two of us and we celebrated Christmas Eve.

    My family didn’t really have Christmas dinner growing up, but as an adult I’ve participated in Christmas dinner more often than not. Today I got to fix one, even if it was just for the two of us. We got Cornish hens, and since they were quite small ones (under a pound each), I cooked three to make sure we have a couple days of leftovers. I also took mashed potatoes out of the freezer (since I’d already mashed all the potatoes we had on hand) and made gravy, and served a veggie tray and cranberry sauce. When I asked my husband what baked goods he wanted for today, he chose brownies. We started the day with freshly made cinnamon coffee cake, then talked to various family members, then ate lunch. It’s probably time to call another brother or two. (I’ve talked to two of my five brothers, our children, and my mother-in-law.)

    My mother-in-law wouldn’t get my husband drums when he was a boy and wanted them. But grandchildren are different. With parental permission, she got a small set of drums for our granddaughter. 🙂 We sent overalls, two cardigans, and two books, and I understand all the gifts were hits. (One cardigan was put on, then the overalls, to open the rest of the gifts.)

  25. Nightingale picked up Chickadee on her way home from work yesterday. We had a delicious dinner of angel hair pasta with garlic-lemon sauce, flounder filets, and mussels. Afterwards, we watched The Santa Clause and had some stollen and hot cocoa.

    This morning was the usual – opening presents, having breakfast (which had been cooking in the slow cooker overnight), and then opening our stockings. The rest of the day has been casual, with talking, playing Wii Fit games, and whatnot. Christmas dinner (ham, sweet potato casserole, spinach salad, and snowflake rolls) will be in a little while.

    It is so nice to have my girls together, all of us enjoying being with each other. And having Boy here, too, of course. 🙂 (He spent a couple hours with his other grandparents.)

    (Yes, I still miss Hubby, but am so grateful for the family I have left.)

    When Gabby’s-Mom learned from Nightingale that Boy was getting a good scooter for Christmas (which was on sale at the time), she decided to get the same kind of for Gabby so they can ride them together. 🙂

  26. Oh! Speaking of Boy. . .

    Yesterday evening, Nightingale took Boy’s scooter over to Neighbor-Husband for him to fix the brake lines which weren’t working correctly. (Chickadee occupied Boy upstairs while she did this.) When she went back to get it, he told her that Boy is a good boy, and since Gabby and her mom have lived on the lane, and the kids are spending even more time together, he has noticed that Boy has been a good influence on Gabby. (He is well acquainted with Gabby because she has been in his wife’s daycare for several years.)

    Boy may give us some trouble, but he is a good boy with others. That is encouraging to hear.

  27. Sounds like everyone is having a good Christmas Day ♡ except DJ who is not well. Prayers for you, DJ. I hope it is not Covid, and the ailment will quickly go away. One of my prayer partners whose husband has Covid texted that she fell and broke her arm at 2:30 a.m. and needs surgery next week. I am feeling so sad to hear that on top of the Covid.

    Art and I went out so I could deliver a gift bag to a friend. While out, we went to the community garden for me to get a few photos. I could not even go to the back side of the garden because the side walk was flooded from all that rain we had.

    Kizzie I smile at the description of your day…it is good to have family around and just “be” together.
    Janice just imagine if all that rain was snow instead…you’d be snowed under!! 😊 ⛄️
    In the fifties it is here today with sunshiny blue skies….next week we should get a tad bit more of snow…

  34. Wow, the last post was four hours ago.

    In the last 36 hours I haven’t seen anyone except my husband unless you count poor quality video (Zoom), but have spoken by phone with my mother-in-law, both daughters, son-in-law, and granddaugther, three of my brothers, and one sister-in-law. I tried to call the other two brothers and hopefully can touch base with both tomorrow.
