  1. The founders and confederate statues are one thing, but this seems like overkill.

    https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/statue-of-jesus-christ-toppled-and-beheaded-in-miami

“A statue of Jesus Christ was vandalized in Miami on Wednesday morning, and the Archdiocese of Miami expects it will be investigated as a hate crime.

The statue, located at southwest Miami-Dade’s Good Shepherd Catholic Church, was found decapitated and removed from its pedestal, and the Rev. Edivaldo da Silva believes it was a targeted attack, according to WSVN News 7.

“Obviously not, that’s for sure,” da Silva said when asked if the statue fell over on its own. “They had some powerful hands to remove it. Seeing what is happening in our country, I presume so, but we don’t have 100% assurance.”

    https://www.politico.com/states/california/story/2020/07/17/newsom-mandates-virtual-instruction-in-most-california-counties-for-now-1301843

“Newsom orders virtual instruction in most California counties”

“California Gov. Gavin Newsom laid out new rules Friday that will require schools in counties with high rates of coronavirus infections to keep campuses closed until they can meet certain public health standards, the broadest move yet in the U.S. to mandate virtual learning for the fall.

Schools located in counties that are on the state’s coronavirus watch list must not physically open for instruction until they have cleared several public health benchmarks for 14 consecutive days. As of Friday, 32 of California’s 58 counties were on the state’s watch list, including most of Southern California, the Central Valley, Sacramento region and Bay Area.

About 80 percent of California’s population lives in a watch list county. The order applies to all schools, including private and charter programs that might have been planning to run in-person classes.

The move defies President Donald Trump’s efforts to reopen campuses for the fall and comes amid growing concerns expressed by teachers and families. It also overrides efforts in areas such as Orange County, where the board of education this week recommended that students return to classrooms without masks. And Clovis Unified, a district in Fresno County, can no longer open five days a week as planned.”

“How Michael Flynn Got Caught In The Crossfire Between Two Obama Agencies Looking To Get Trump

Michael Flynn’s life was upended because one cadre of elites couldn’t let go of power, and the other had to justify spending $25 million of taxpayer money after realizing its investigation was a sham.”

“Although the Obama administration weaponized the Logan Act to get Gen. Michael Flynn fired, it never intended to actually use the antiquated law to prosecute him. In fact, it has been the prosecution instigated by former Special Counsel Robert Mueller that uncovered the full extent of the Obama administration’s misdeeds.

The Logan Act is a law from 1799 dictating that it is illegal for private citizens to negotiate with a foreign power in a way that contradicts the current administration’s policy. The Logan Act has been used only twice since then for prosecution, the last time in 1852, and is widely considered by legal experts to be unconstitutional.

    Obama Provided Leadership

Peter Strzok’s newly released handwritten notes shed more light on the meeting President Barack Obama held in the Oval Office 15 days before Trump’s inauguration. This meeting has become infamous because of Susan Rice’s bizarre decision to email herself an account of it on her last day as Obama’s national security adviser.

Present at the meeting were Vice President Joe Biden, FBI Director James Comey, Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates, and Rice. Sometime after the meeting, Comey told FBI agent Strzok about it, and now we have Strzok’s notes from that conversation.

Rice’s email says, “President Obama began the conversation by stressing his continued commitment to ensuring that every aspect of this issue is handled by the intelligence and law enforcement communities ‘by the book.’” These words, stated three times according to Rice, are conspicuously missing from Strzok’s notes of the meeting. Further, Comey’s subsequent decision not to proceed “by the book,” or within the bounds of law and procedure, demonstrate that either Comey didn’t take Obama’s instructions seriously or Obama never gave those instructions in the first place.

According to Strzok’s notes, Obama said, “Make sure you look at things plus have the right people on it.” Obama also asked, “Is there anything I shouldn’t be telling transition team?” Comey replied, “[Sergey] Kislyak calls but appear legit.” Although Comey claimed the calls with the Russian ambassador appeared legitimate, he proceeded to use the Logan Act as pretext for interviewing Flynn.

According to Strzok’s notes, it was Biden who brought up the Logan Act in the Oval Office meeting. It also turns out Biden was one of 16 Obama officials who participated in the mass unmasking of Flynn’s name. The more information that comes out, the more it looks like targeting Flynn was a coordinated group effort with Obama at the helm.

    Here’s the facts.

    https://www.thehour.com/news/article/It-was-like-being-preyed-upon-Federal-officers-15415096.php

“One widely shared video showed two men in military garb on the street at night taking a young man wearing all black into custody. On the video, the two agents do not answer shouted questions before putting the suspect into an unmarked minivan and driving away.

On Friday, Customs and Border Protection issued a statement taking responsibility for the apprehension and asserting its agents were wearing gear that identified them as CBP personnel.

CBP agents went after that individual because they suspected he was involved in “assaults against federal agents or destruction of federal property,” the statement said. “Once CBP agents approached the suspect, a large and violent mob moved towards their location. For everyone’s safety, CBP agents quickly moved the suspect to a safer location for further questioning.”

The agency insisted the CBP agents identified themselves and were wearing CBP insignia during the apprehension.

One protester, 29-year-old Mark Pettibone, described being grabbed by several men in green military fatigues and generic “police” patches on their clothing in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Pettibone said he did not know whether the men were police or far-right extremists, who frequently don militarylike outfits and harass left-leaning protesters in Portland.

“I was terrified,” Pettibone said in an interview. “It seemed like it was out of a horror/sci-fi, like a Philip K. Dick novel. It was like being preyed upon.”

Pettibone was taken to the city’s federal courthouse and placed in a holding cell. Two agents eventually read him his Miranda rights and asked if he would waive those rights to answer questions. He declined and the agents let him go. The federal agents who detained him did not tell him why he was being held or provide any record of an arrest, he said.”

  9. AJ — You easily accepted the federal agencies narrative of what happened in Portland. You’ve a bit more skeptical the last three years. Yes, police can hold you if they suspect you of a crime. However, the ambiguity of their suspicion — assaulting federal officers or vandalizing a monument –makes the arrest fairly arbitrary. Their disappointment with what they found in his back pack and his quick release when he wouldn’t answer questions indicates they were on a fishing expedition — roaming the streets arbitrarily arresting people dressed in black. From the video we can’t see any indication of a violent mob and the fact they had time to chase him and then walk him back indicates there was no security risk. Instead of questioning him there, he was taken into custody for what I can only infer was to intimidate.

I know the CBP can operate within a 100 miles of a land or maritime border and they can generally arrest without cause and hold you indefinitely (as the children still in cages can attest to). In some cases, they have even imprisoned Americans without cause. However, in Portland their directive was to protect federal property not roam the street looking for people dressed in black. And since Portland is within 100 miles of the Pacific, I suppose they can look from immigration violations. They have overstepped their jurisdiction and are establishing a dangerous precedent in which a president can order federal police agencies to American cities and then detain at will taking over the city, county and state police. In the end, you have armed federal agencies roaming the streets of American that is you now have rule by law not rule of law.

  10. Not everything is a hate crime. Both the left and the right jump too quickly to that conclusion.

Children shouldn’t be sacrificed for better economic statistics. There’s no real safe way to have a classroom of 25-30 students in the midst of a pandemic and California has some major hot spots that should be cleared up first. A county by county approach is probably the best balance between health and education concerns. Secondly, parents should be include in the decision making process — I find it ironic that the Republican party which has been at the forefront of parent choice is now all about mandatory attendance. Kellyanne Conway did say one size doesn’t fit all and parents needed to be involved but then she was talking about her kids and Baron Trump.

Living in a jurisdiction with only 150 new cases a day and maybe 3-5 a day in my city, I find the idea of sending kids to school in places like Florida ludicrous. Its obvious the only reason to send kids to school is to allow parents to work. In places like Florida, parents who can stay home with their kids will stay home. Thus the poor and marginalized people will again suffer.

  11. American libel laws make it almost impossible for Liberty to win this case. They should have found a paper copy of NYT in Canada or the UK and sued there. The chances of this going to trial is extremely slim. The US libel laws also make the plaintiff (and defendant) responsible for their own legal costs (in Canada and the UK the loser pays), so both sides have a motivation to settle rather go to trial. In the end, the only real purpose is to make NYT think twice in the future when writing about Liberty.

He used govt as a weapon against his enemies, not actual criminals like Trump is.

    https://www.foxnews.com/media/border-chief-portland-wheeler-protests

“Acting Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Mark Morgan has forcefully denied claims that his officers were concealing their identity and exacerbating the unrest in Portland, Oregon.

“It’s just outrageous and it’s reckless,” Morgan said Saturday of Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler’s complaints about his agents.

Wheeler has accused the administration of sending in troops as part of a political strategy that ultimately “ratcheted up the tension on our streets.”

“The argument that the mere presence of federal officers and agents causes violence, that is outrageous and it’s ridiculous, and I believe that most American people do not believe that,” Morgan said on “Cavuto Live.”

“What’s happening right now are absolute criminals. They are willfully organizing, planning and coordinating, and preparing themselves and bringing weapons to these areas with the intent to destroy federal property and harm federal agents and officers. That is criminal and that cannot be justified,” he added.”

    ——

“When Fox News host Neil Cavuto asked about officers not identifying themselves, Morgan called the allegation a “lie.” He also dismissed the concerns over unmarked vehicles, arguing that it’s a “standard tactic” for law enforcement.

“Right now, in situations like this, it’s standard procedure — it’s a standard tactic for law enforcement officers to use unmarked cars. … Neil, it’s been on your show, where marked vehicles have actually been attacked by criminals, so it just makes sense for the safety of the officers and agents as well as the protesters,” he said.

“They go out, they have reasonable suspicion or probable cause that these individuals have committed a federal crime by destroying federal property, or intentionally trying to physically harm a federal agent or officer, and they are going out and they are absolutely trying to apprehend those individuals,” Morgan added.

“That’s what they should be doing as to ensure law and order. These are criminals — they should be held responsible. As the acting commissioner, I support the men and women 100 percent in what they’re doing. These are not weird tactics. These are absolutely necessary tactics to hold these criminals responsible for criminal behavior.”

His comments echoed those of Acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf, who tweeted Friday, “Our men and women in uniform are patriots. We will never surrender to violent extremists on my watch.”

Morgan also told Cavuto that his agency had credible intelligence that protesters sought to destroy federal property. “They did just that — they attacked, they went in, they broke windows, broke down doors. They tried to enter the building and harm a federal officer,” he said.”

  15. the above is hrw.

Amused when people deny things that are on video and also amused with the “Acting” title. A nice symbol of the decline of the administrative state under Trump — no permanence.

True a small number of protesters are criminals but vandalism isn’t really what CBP and other federal agencies are for. It would not be weird for uniform local police to enforce the law and arrest people with probable cause but it is weird to use federal agencies to arrest people for vandalism.

  18. Are Trump supporters still trying to make “Obamagate” a thing? For eight years, not single person in the Obama admin was indicted, convicted, imprisioned or even forced to resigned meanwhile Trump is setting records. Did Obama make mistakes, yes. In my opinion he was too centrists and far too willing to compromise with people who would never reciprocate.

Meanwhile in Portland as your own list attests it was mostly graffiti. Now that the feds have arrived roaming the streets arbitrarily arresting people for wearing black. The narrative the Trump admin would like the nation to follow is a group of anarchists are destroying the streets of Portland and the feds are needed to restore law and order. In truth, the feds have escalated the problem. When a group of middle class suburban moms showed up to demonstrate and chanted “feds stay clear, moms are here” the feds shot flashbang at the moms. They are not a police force rather an occupying army treating the streets of Portland like it was Baghdad. And as you note; its now escalated to arson. I’m sure the feds aren’t the cause but there’s a strong correlation. Obviously when suburban moms show up and are treated like the enemy, the Trump admin has lost their way.

  19. The Chicago cops look like the Keystone Cops….who trained them?

They allowed themselves to be encircled with no way out in order to protect an animate object. First priority in many situations from driving on the highway to crowd control is to leave yourself a way out. Instead they sacrificed their safety for a statue of Colombus — an idol of a secular hero. And then when back-up arrives, instead of forming a wedge to clear a path for the trapped police to escape, they wade into the mob and start arbitrarily beating on people. They didn’t reach the statue or rescue the trapped cops instead distracted by the need to beat people up they themselves become trapped and have to form a square. Absolutely no discipline.

If this is the level of competence of the Chicago police, they should be defunded. This is the perfect footage to support defunding police.

    https://www.foxnews.com/politics/meadows-previews-school-reopening-plans-durham-probe-results-i-expect-indictments

“Meadows signals imminent indictments in Durham probe: ‘It’s time for people to go to jail’

The Justice Department’s watchdog has identified critical errors in every FBI wiretap application”

“White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows said Sunday that it’s “time for people to go to jail” as part of U.S. Attorney John Durham’s probe into FBI misconduct — prompting ex-Trump aide George Papadopoulos to sound a celebratory note on Twitter.

The comments came as Fox News learned this weekend that Jennifer Boone, a senior FBI official who oversaw the flawed probe into former Trump adviser Carter Page, has received a major promotion to lead a field office — and the bureau won’t say why.

Meadows, during his Sunday interview with Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures,” also previewed the Trump administration’s soon-to-be-released plans for reopening schools and implementing new economic stimulus measures. More details, Meadows said, would be coming this week.

However, Meadows’ comments on the Durham probe were among his most suggestive yet. They followed Attorney General Bill Barr’s comments to Fox News earlier this year that Durham’s findings have been “very troubling” and that familiar names are currently being probed.

“I think the American people are expecting indictments,” Meadows told anchor Maria Bartiromo. “I expect indictments based on the evidence I’ve seen. Lindsey Graham did a good job in getting that out. We know that they not only knew that there wasn’t a case, but they continued to investigate and spy.”

    —-

“”And yes, I use the word spy on Trump campaign officials and actually even doing things when this president was sworn in,” Meadows continued. “And after that and doing in an inappropriate manner, you’re going to see a couple of other documents come out in the coming days that will suggest that not only was the campaign spied on, but the FBI did not act appropriately as they were investigating. It’s all starting to come unraveled. And I tell you, it’s time that people go to jail and people are indicted.”

  23. Its been almost 12 years of constant Republican harassment of the Obama administration and still nothing. And it will be nothing — no indictments, no charges, no convictions, no prison sentences — Trump can’t say the same.

They can keep searching. I’m sure the House would love to hear FBI testimony. Just think Mueller, Comey and the rest testifying to a house committee…..Trump’s worst nightmare. How about they ask Flynn to testify — he can commit perjury all over again. There’s nothing there.

The Trump admin is scrambling to find a new narrative as they circle around the drain. Meanwhile Americans are dying a preventable death. America — home to 4% of the world’s population and about 23% of the world’s covid deaths. Trump hasn’t attended a cornavirus task force meeting since April and today he’s golfing.

His solution (?) is to ignore test results and send kids back to school. With kids back to school and parents working again, the economic statistics can improve. With an improved economy he hopes to increase his poll numbers. For better poll numbers he will put children in harm’s way. He’s no longer even trying to look like he cares.

His other tactic is to become the law and order president so he’s ordering federal agencies into Portland and his admin promises more cities, even when local administrations don’t want help. All to increase tensions — people tend to vote Republican when they’re scared. The Portland mayor was right — he sent federal police to Portland to gain votes in Ohio. You have a desperate man trying to manipulate the situation in order to win — with very real world consequences.

  24. The first video tweet claimed antifa miliants are riding around armed in unmarked cars. A truly weird statement — how are they supposed to mark their cars? Where was the anitfa? And I didn’t see any guns — maybe in the first pickup which was marked “Black Lives Matter” but I didnt see anything. There was a truck with a first aid marking. It looked like a well organized march with the “support” vehicles at the back. I’ve been in similar union led marches and its organized the same way. The purple truck went the other way and was an outlier to the rest of the video

The second video only showed some people breaking windows — no looting or theft or even entry was video taped. I’m sure Jeff Bezos can afford a few windows.

Antifa and other leftist groups are rarely armed — the traditional belief is that the Second Amendment isn’t respected when exercised by leftist groups. They know if they carry weapons the police will use it as an excuse to escalate the use of force; hence the left tend to use less lethal weapons. Yes I know some leftist groups will march armed but its generally not the case especially in these types of anti police marches where the police are just waiting for an excuse.
