Luke 22:7-46

The Last Supper

7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8 Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.”

9 “Where do you want us to prepare for it?” they asked.

10 He replied, “As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, 11 and say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 12 He will show you a large room upstairs, all furnished. Make preparations there.”

13 They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.

14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. 15 And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.”

17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. 18 For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”

19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”

20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. 21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table. 22 The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed. But woe to that man who betrays him!” 23 They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this.

24 A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. 25 Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. 28 You are those who have stood by me in my trials. 29 And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”

33 But he replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.”

34 Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.”

35 Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?”

“Nothing,” they answered.

36 He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. 37 It is written: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors’; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.”

38 The disciples said, “See, Lord, here are two swords.”

“That’s enough!” he replied.

Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives

39 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.” 41 He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, 42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.

45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. 46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”

  2. I suspect the last supper was really on a Wednesday.
    And the crucifixion was on Thursday.
    I go along with the “Good Friday” thing because it doesn’t make any real difference.
    But the Bible says Jesus was in the grave three days and nights. Friday doesn’t do it.
    But, you say, the Bible says the next day was the Sabbath.
    And I say. “Sabbath” to Israel was not a day of the week, but a Holy day. The day God passed over Israel in Egypt.
    e.g. You can have tow “Sabbaths”.

    The problem with this, and many other things that evolved from Roman Catholicism is that the ancient popes were politicians and not students of the Bible.
    Hence, this error, unmarried priests, physical presence of Christ when the priest says the magic words, and many other things that are church policy but not scriptural.

  3. Chas, three days and three nights is an manner of speech. It does not have to literally be three days and three nights, and there are instances in Scripture which back this up: https://answersingenesis.org/jesus/resurrection/three-days-and-nights/
    ‘In Esther 4:16, we find Esther exhorting Mordecai to persuade the Jews to fast. “Neither eat nor drink for three days, night or day” (NKJV). This was clearly in preparation for her highly risky attempt to see the king. Yet just two verses later, in Esther 5:1, we read: “Now it happened on the third day that Esther put on her royal robes and stood in the inner court of the king’s palace.” If three days and nights were counted in the same way as we count them today, then Esther could not have seen the king until the fourth day.’

    Friday was the first day, Saturday was the second day, and Sunday was the third day. It was not the Catholic Church that determined how the Resurrection was observed. The Eastern and Western branches of the church were still united when Good Friday and Easter began to be observed.

  5. From sundown to sundown. Christ was buried before sundown (John 19:31-42), so the day he was buried counts as one day and night, even though there was only a few hours left of that day before sundown.

    Fri. to Sat.
    Sat. to Sunday.

    3 days. Makes sense. 🙂

    But I don’t think the days matter either. What matters is He rose, and is coming again. 🙂

  8. Chas, I have always understood that, too. I know that numbers in Scripture can be figurative, but “three days and three nights” seems to be emphasized too much for it to mean “well, whatever.”

I once thought there was valid reason for there being another Sabbath – though if it was Thursday when he was crucified, then Friday and Saturday would be two Sabbaths back to back, which seems unlikely – but it was actually the Gospel accounts that convinced me otherwise. The four accounts all emphasize that he was buried on the day of preparation (Matthew 27:63, Mark 15:42). The sixth day was the day of preparation (Exodus 16:22-23). It specifically says that the women obeyed the command to not work, further emphasizing that the day after his burial was the seventh day (Exodus 20:8-12; Luke 23:56). And the women came to the tomb on the first day of the week (John 20:1), which was the third day after his death (Luke 24:13, 21). We sometimes do speak like this. When I work three days in a row, I will sometimes have occasion to say on the third day that this is my third day working in a row. I will not have finished the day, but it is still my third day of work. The Bible emphasizes three days, certainly, but the phrase three days and three nights actually only occurs three times in the Bible, I Samuel 30:12, Jonah 1:17, and Matthew 12:40, and the I Samuel passage is unrelated.

  10. The date for passover is not dependent upon the sabbath that falls on Saturday. It is determined by the moon phases. It is certainly probable that the passover came, then followed by a regular sabbath. That would account for the 3 days.

In a few hours the US embassy flight back to the states will be leaving PNG and flying through the night bringing all of those folks home.. 97 from Ukarumpa, even two little boys from my class, as the quints have been asked to come home due to underlying health conditions. For several this will be their last flight as they are retiring. My friends Jeff and Linda are retiring after 25 years in PNG. They could not fly out three weeks ago due to the shutdown. Please pray for things to go smoothly.
