  1. America doesn’t have a racism problem, the left does.

Victor Davis Hanson and The Strange Case of ‘White Supremacy’.

The Strange Case of ‘White Supremacy’

“There are concrete ways even in these troubled times to calibrate real American successes in mostly transcending race and religion. The United States is said to be a nation of 70 percent “white” people, at least to the extent in this age of intermarriage that such ossified rubrics mean much anymore. Yet America is the destination of most of the world’s immigrants.

Most estimates suggest new American immigrants range from 80 percent to 90 percent nonwhite, the vast majority from Mexico and Latin America, and Asia, and in particular Mexico, Central America, India, Southeast Asia, and China. Given the dominance of the American media worldwide, the influence of American movies and television, and the ubiquity of American pop culture, most immigrants have a fairly good idea of what life inside America is like.

Why, then, if we as a people are plagued from the outset by an incurable “white supremacy” and “white privilege,” would hundreds of thousands of nonwhite immigrants each year wish to enter such a dreadful place?

The answer to why America appears attractive to newcomers is obvious: what global elites say and what non-elites do are two quite different things.

Certainly, one can damn in the abstract (whether for careerist purposes or from psychological angst) what one desires in the concrete. For all her expressed disappointment in America, U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) may well have violated U.S. tax and perhaps immigration law in an allegedly felonious effort to facilitate her brother’s entry into America—a fact that resonates far more than her often tired whines about her dissatisfaction with her adopted country.

In sum, millions over the last few decades would have avoided or been barred from entering the United States, as they have avoided immigrating into an exclusionary but prosperous China or Japan—had they believed America was a racist country dominated by overweening white privilege. Throughout history white supremacist societies—or any other supposedly racially defined nation—have not adopted de facto or de jure immigration policies that welcome immigrants who are 80-90 percent of a different race or ethnic background.”

    “Current Racialist Leaders

All racist movements have leaders. America’s white majority has experienced such fringe racist demagogues who hoped to forge a common racial identity among enclaves of white Americans. More recently, the repellent David Duke’s Ku Klux Klan and macabre George Lincoln Rockwell’s American Nazi Party come to mind. Yet both men were 20th-century fizzles who never succeeded in making shared whiteness the common weld among diverse Protestants, Catholics, Republicans, Democrats, coastal elites and midwesterners, working poor and the rich, immigrants and native-born.

Today, alt-rightist Richard Spencer sees himself as a successor to white supremacists of the past. But he has no real national following, opposes Donald Trump, and finds his support mostly only on obscure websites and fringe survivalist groups that appeal to the unwell. True white supremacists are always outnumbered by their opponents at rallies, and have no creed that attracts any but the unhinged.

In contrast, the well-known anti-Semites and unapologetic racists of our media age are provocateurs like Louis Farrakhan, Al Sharpton, and Rev. Jerimiah Wright. They in varying degrees have been sought out by progressive politicians—for support, endorsements and photo-ops.

In the present-day America of 2019 anti-Semitism usually emanates from people like “the squad” or the unapologetic racial bigotry of an Al Sharpton, prominent rappers, or Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan. Who has had more influence on a president—Reverend Jeremiah Wright or Richard Spencer?

Barack Obama correctly assumed that all of his incendiary rhetoric—the clingers speech, the “typical white person” riff on his grandmother, the defense of his former pastor and confidant, the anti-Semitic Wright (“Them Jews ain’t going to let him [Obama] talk to me”), the cheap braggadocio of getting “in their faces” and taking “a gun to a knife fight,” or Eric Holder’s “my people” would be seen either as mere rhetorical excesses, or now and then understandable emotional cries of the heart rather than sincere windows into a problematic soul.”

  2. Like manna to the left.

White Supremacy: Like Manna to the Left

“Since the world has not heard enough about “white supremacy” lately, I thought I would say a few words about this neglected subject.

Please don’t turn up your nose and say “but ‘white supremacy’ is just a malignant fiction, a fantasy conjured up by the Left in order to beat up on conservatives, Trump supporters, etc.”

This is true. “White supremacy” is in this respect like “climate change”: a bugbear, a horror tale utterly without substance but scary—Oooo so scary!—nonetheless. In Through the Looking Glass, Alice scoffs when the White Queen tells her that she is more than 100 years old. “I can’t believe that!” says Alice.

“Can’t you?” the Queen said in a pitying tone. “Try again: draw a long breath, and shut your eyes.”

Alice laughed. “There’s no use trying,” she said: “one can’t believe impossible things.”

“I daresay you haven’t had much practice,” said the Queen. “When I was your age, I always did it for half-an-hour a day. Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”

The whole “white supremacy” meme is a bit like that. The number of real, honest-to-goodness, card-carrying, union-affiliated “white supremacists” is vanishingly small. They could be crowded into a middle-school gymnasium in a small town with room left over for the cheerleaders and a popcorn machine. The idea that white supremacists or the ideology of white supremacism represent a threat to American society is preposterous. Everyone knows this, the pathetic commentators on CNN and MSNBC just as much as the gesticulating clowns running for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Yet they keep screaming about “white supremacism,” hoping, I believe, that if they keep repeating the mantra, their incantation will bring the longed-for object into being.

Indeed, it is one of the signal ironies of the campaign against the phantasm denominated “white supremacism” that the people shouting the loudest against it say they abominate everything about white supremacism—“racism,” Donald Trump, etc.—when, in fact, they crave its advent with a fervency that makes St. Theresa look blasé.

You see this every time there is a public act of violence. When the news breaks you can discern a sharp intake of breath on the part of the Confraternity of Leftist Pundits. “Please Comrade God,” you can almost hear them pray, “Please let the perpetrator be a pasty-faced, Trump-voting, Christian white guy.”

Usually, it isn’t. But every now and then their prayers are answered, as they were, sort of, just recently when some wacko who doesn’t like Mexicans murdered 22 people in El Paso. Central Casting is going to have a hard time making the chap in question out to be a “white supremacist,” however, since he was just a mix of nasty congeries of bizarre ideas. But at least he was white. So was the Dayton, Ohio, shooter, who murdered nine people, but he had the misfortune to be a registered Democrat and avid Elizabeth Warren supporter and espoused various left-wing causes, so the less said about him, the better.”

  5. Poisonous lies.

    https://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2019/08/the-poisonous-lie-of-racist-policing.php

“THE POISONOUS LIE OF RACIST POLICING

It isn’t fun to keep addressing claims that policing in America is racist. But the left keeps peddling this lie, and Democratic presidential candidates have joined in, so I feel the need to keep countering it.

Fortunately, Heather Mac Donald does the heavy lifting. I just have to link to her articles and do a little summarizing.

Heather’s latest is called “Why ‘policing is racist’ is such a poisonous lie.” She informs us:

A new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciencesz demolishes the Democratic narrative regarding race and police shootings. It turns out that white officers are no more likely than black or Hispanic officers to shoot black civilians. It is a racial group’s rate of violent crime that determines police shootings, not the race of the officer. The more frequently officers encounter violent suspects from any given racial group, the greater the chance that members of that racial group will be shot by a police officer.

That’s a reality so obvious even a rational leftist should grasp it. Unfortunately, rational leftists are in short supply.

Once crime rates are taken into account, the study cited above shows that if there is any bias in police shootings, it is against white civilians. Certainly, there is no bias against blacks.”

    —————-

    Mac Donald’s piece….

    https://nypost.com/2019/08/05/why-policing-is-racist-is-such-a-poisonous-lie/

“The Democratic candidates have revived the anti-police rhetoric of the Obama years. Joe Biden’s criminal-justice plan promises that black parents will no longer have to fear when their children walk the streets — the threat allegedly coming from cops, not gangbangers. Pete Buttigieg has said police shootings of black men won’t be solved “until we move policing out from the shadow of systemic racism.” Beto O’Rourke claims that police shoot blacks “solely based on the color of their skin.”

A new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences demolishes the Democratic narrative regarding race and police shootings.

In fact, if there is a bias in police shootings after crime rates are taken into account, it is against white civilians, the study found.

Earlier studies have also disproved the idea that white officers are biased in shooting black citizens. The Black Lives Matter narrative has been impervious to the truth, however. Police departments are under enormous political pressure to hire based on race, despite existing efforts to recruit minorities, on the theory that doing so will decrease police shootings of minorities. The Obama administration recommended in 2016 that police departments lower their entry standards to be able to qualify more minorities for recruitment.

Departments had already been deemphasizing written exams or eliminating requirements that recruits have a clean criminal record, but the trend intensified thereafter. The Baltimore Police Department changed its qualifying exam to such an extent that the director of legal instruction in the Baltimore Police Academy complained in 2018 that rookie officers were being let out onto the street with little understanding of the law. Biden’s plan would require police hiring to “mirror the racial diversity” of the community as a precondition of federal funding.

This effort to increase minority representation won’t reduce racial disparities in shootings, concludes the PNAS study, since white officers aren’t responsible for those disparities; black crime rates are.”

And that is the sad truth.

  7. Kizzie,

There’s so much garbage in that article. It takes about 4 paragraphs for his intent (to direct people to his group so he can make money) becomes obvious. And he got out of the movement over 20 years ago in 1996, so he has no insider info that’s of use any longer. It also makes me doubt his claims the movement is growing. How would he know? Did he hear it on TV? He offers nothing as evidence for this claim.

But he does have a memoir you can buy, counseling you can pay for, and a TV show, and he’s available for interviews as well, paid, of course. He’s a grifter that the left uses as an “expert” because he tells them what they want to hear. Tucker Carlson was right.

It’s just Russia, Russia, Russia, repackaged. No proof, just trust us.

    No thanks.

  8. Police are biased systemically and on an individual level. They discriminate both on the basis of class and race. To invent a police check:crime rate ratio is to pull things together which dont belong.

The simple fact is the crime rate is higher in marginalized communities because police will process and arrest these communities for negligible offenses. For example white and black teens use marijuana at the same rates yet black teens are more frequently convicted and imprisoned for simple possession. Police will react differently to a white person than to a black person. There’s a YouTube video in which a white and black person both open carry in an open carry state. I couldnt find thr orginal but heres the clip with commentary

  9. Whether white supremacy is growing or not is difficult to determine. Most of the discussion I’ve seen focuses on anecdotal narratives that come from biased (on one side or the other) sources. How can such a thing truly be measured? I don’t think it can. It’s one of those political arguments that is lodged in the eye (and political leanings) of the beholder.

  10. I can see where there are mini-peaks for these movements now and again — we’ve seen it throughout the 1960s – 1970s with groups such as the Black Panthers, to name a movement on the other side of the aisle — but typically those kinds of things ebb and flow with the times (as opposed to being huge groundswells of movements as seen in Nazi Germany, for example).

That’s not to say we shouldn’t be vigilant and aware, but it seems to me these things also can be misread much too easily (and conveniently) — particularly in an intense campaign season?

  11. AJ – Since he knows people who are white supremacists, and helping them is his job (I guess) then I would assume he keeps abreast of what is going on with them.

I’ve also seen articles over the past couple years about this kind of thing growing in Europe, too.

Acknowledging that it is growing is not the same as saying that it is a particularly widespread problem, but that it is a concern that needs watching. It also is not anti-white to point this out. (I have a feeling that some white men think that pointing a finger at white supremacists is somehow pointing a finger at all white men. That is not so.)

I wish I could remember the details, but I read a piece countering the argument of “you can fit them all on a football field” or some such thing. He pointed out the terrorist groups that could easily fit on a football field or smaller spaces, but have still wreaked much havoc in the world.

  12. DJ – I know this tends to be a liberal vs. conservative issue, but it shouldn’t be. If white nationalism is on the rise, that is not an indictment of white men in general. But since many liberals would tend to welcome the indictment, while many conservatives would want to deny any growth in their defense against that indictment, the issue of whether or not it is a problem has become one more partisan issue. Interestingly though, I have seen folks who lean conservative also sharing articles that indicate it is on the rise, or at the very least, those already in the “movement” are getting bolder.

They aren’t racist or biased. They’re just smart enough to read their own numbers and know who is responsible. Why waste resources elsewhere? We know what the problem is, the left just doesn’t like it.

  15. More….

    https://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2019/04/11/the_fake_news_surge_in_hate_crimes__140019.html

“According to the FBI, “hate crimes” are on the rise. The agency reported a 17% increase in such crimes in 2017 compared to 2016. Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., recently said: “There has been an increase in hate crimes. There has been an increase in very negative rhetoric at groups.” Notwithstanding the crime hoax perpetrated by actor Jussie Smollett, CNN recently reported, “Hate crime allegations show no signs of stopping, with plenty of examples reported in recent months.”

But wait. The FBI, in its news release announcing the 2017 Hate Crime Statistics report detailing the “rise” in hate crimes, said, “Although the numbers increased last year, so did the number of law enforcement agencies reporting hate crime data — with approximately 1,000 additional agencies contributing information.” Coincidentally, the number of agencies that reported at least one hate crime within their jurisdiction also increased in 2017 — by 15%. The FBI described its efforts “to encourage reporting of hate crime statistics.” The FBI release said: “Next year, FBI personnel will provide training for law enforcement officers on how to identify bias-motivated incidents and report that data to the FBI’s UCR [Uniform Crime Reports] Program. Additionally, the Department of Justice launched a new hate crimes webpage, which has information for law enforcement on reporting incidents.”

Even PolitiFact, in its examination on whether there is a rise in hate crimes, said “the full picture is more nuanced,” citing a hate crime researcher who “said that some of the increase, especially in cities with very low numbers before, was the result of the more rigorous reporting.”

Kentucky State University professor Wilfred Reilly, author of a new book called “Hate Crime Hoax,” goes further than mere skepticism about an alleged rise in hate crimes. He says that most of the headline-grabbing “hate crime” stories were fake and calls the 17% uptick an “aberration” due to this increase in agencies’ reporting. “Almost all of that surge is due to the simple fact that in 2017 the number of police departments reporting hate crimes to the FBI increased by 1,000,” says Reilly, according to a Detroit News opinion piece. “The surge narrative,” he insists, “is pretty dishonest.” The Jussie Smollett case represents just one recent hate crime hoax. For his book, Reilly examined 409 fake hate crimes that garnered media attention in the last five years. “In major cases, almost all of them have been hoaxes,’ he says. ‘The number of hate crime hoaxes actually exceeds the number of convictions. The majority of these high-profile incidents never happened.'”

If Reilly is right, the rampant news reports of the “rise” in hate crimes is a stunning example of what President Donald Trump calls “fake news.”

  16. Kizzie, I just don’t know how they’re quantifying that beyond anecdotal incidents and the political rhetoric that’s on the rise surrounding the shootings right now. It may be on the rise, it may just be getting a lot more attention or publicity right now.

If it’s on the rise, does that mean from 1% to 2%? More? An increase by 50 percent? I’d just like to see something more definitive and I’m not sure it’s even possible to determine that. I guess we just watch and see.

My main thought isn’t so much that there is a large percentage of white nationalists out there – I agree that it is probably a small percentage – but that they do exist, they can be violent, and their numbers may be growing as a backlash to the uber-political-correctness that is rampant now, even if those numbers are still small. It’s something to be aware of.

  21. Black crime rates are not responsible for police shootings. How police handle black crime (or non crime) is responsible for the shootings.

A young black boy with a bb gun is killed within seconds of police arriving. Dylan Roof who killed numerous black church goers and was armed with something more than a bb gun is captured alive and is taken to Burger King. A young black man picked up a bb gun in Walmart to purchase for his kid. Someone phoned police and he was dead minutes after they arrived. A white man open carried in a Wal-Mart shortly after El Paso. He was intervirwed and releaed. A black man selling cigarettes was choked to death. A black man was shot jaywalking. The police overeact to black men but not to white men.

  22. Conservatives discounting the FBI is amusing. The FBI like most law and order institutions is staffed byconservatives, mostly Republican. In FBI history they have been far more likely to pursue leftist groups than racist groups. Even now they focus on environmentalist and antifa as well as white supremacists groups despite the latter’s overwhelming numbers. For a conservative organisation such as the FBI to admit white supremacists are the biggest domestic terrorism threat speaks volumes.

  23. If i accept the numbers from your links, about 2-4% of reported hate crimes are hoaxes. Fairly insignificant compared to those that are real. We don’t ignore 96% of reports bc four percent are false.

I can accept that some of the reported increase is better reporting and data collection. However, an actual increarse is also possible and a valid conclusion.

If we look at false rape reports we have similar data; about 2-10% depending on jurisdiction and if “unproveable” is included. I don’t think anyone would suggest false rape reports discounts actual rape reports. Rape similar to most crime is on the decline despite better reporting and data collection.
Unlike other crimes, race hate crimes are not on the decline. Better reporting and data collection is true but almost all crime has declined despite it. Not hate
