According to a pool report put out by the O’Rourke campaign, the candidate spoke to a group of asylum seekers in Spanish for about 15 minutes at a restaurant in Ciudad Juarez, across the Rio Grande from O’Rourke’s hometown of El Paso. The candidate then traveled to a shelter for migrants run by the Catholic Church, where he met around a table with migrants from El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala who told of being denied entry into the U.S. and returned to the Mexican border city while their asylum claims were being processed.
O’Rourke’s campaign livestreamed the discussion on his Facebook page.
“We hope, by sharing these stories, that the conscience of our country is awoken right now, and the need to change the policies that we have in place” becomes apparent, O’Rourke said on the stream. The 46-year-old blamed what he called “the Trump administration’s unlawful ‘Remain in Mexico’ program,” meant to reduce the attractiveness of U.S. asylum requests that in the past had allowed claimants to remain in the U.S. for years as their cases wound their way through the courts.
Of course, O’Rourke blamed President Donald Trump’s administration for forcing the asylum seekers to remain in Mexico. Weird how none of the Democratic candidates mention how America’s immigration system has been a mess for years. Oh, yeah. The Democrats had full control of DC in part of President Barack Obama’s administration but did nothing to reform immigration.

I don’t know that “enemy of the people” is accurate. But they are certainly the enemy of one side of the political isle due to their bias. And again, it’s more of a national media problem than a local one.

Here are some facts about the 2016 presidential election:
Most would agree that the four most important states in President Trump’s victory were Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and Florida. In those four states, the share of voters who said in exit polls that they considered themselves liberals were 27%, 27%, 25% and 25%, respectively. In each state, the share of voters who called themselves moderates was at least 10 percentage points higher.
And in the three of those states where voters were asked about health care, the share who said Obamacare went too far was significantly higher—more than 10 percentage points—than the share saying Obamacare didn’t go far enough.
So here is a question about the 2020 presidential race: Why do Democrats think they can win back such states with a more liberal agenda, one built in particular around going much further than Obamacare toward a Medicare-for-all, government-run health system?
That is the political puzzler that emerges after last week’s initial Democratic Party debates. In those debates, two camps emerged: a majority of the candidates seemed to fit into a progressive camp that would move the party to the left, and a minority of candidates fit into a more-moderate mold, who would root the party more in the center.
It’s still way early in the nominating process, but first impressions matter. And the first impression from the debates was of a dominant progressive wing, and a party moving to the left on the economy, health care and immigration. That road is at least a risky one. …

(Arguments in favor of the party’s continued swing leftward include: the country is more liberal now; this will boil down to an election of the Dem “base” voters who will be overwhelmingly motivated; and many average Americans believe now that the economy needs fixing.)
… “Members of the media, especially journalists, have had a tough few years,” said Andrew Challenger, vice president of the Chicago-based firm.
“Many jobs were already in jeopardy due to a business model that tried to meet consumer demand for free news with ad revenue. As media outlets attempted to put news behind pay walls, in many markets, consumers opted not to pay.”
Some of the notable events this year included the closing of the Youngstown Vindicator, the only daily in the Ohio city, with 144 jobs lost, and the sale of the New Orleans Times-Picayune resulting in the loss of most of the 250 newsroom jobs.
But the troubles have also impacted the digital sector with BuzzFeed cutting 200 employees in January and Verizon eliminating 800 jobs in its media division, which includes Yahoo, AOL, and HuffPost, the Challenger report noted.
The report noted that media companies have been unable to keep pace with Facebook and Google in tailoring ads for customers based on their interests, making it hard to generate online revenue. …
It also noted that a rise in browser ad blocking extensions has made it increasingly difficult to monetize online news. …

Figuring out a new business model for media has been, so far, impossible. Large national publications such as the NYT, WaPo, WSJ have managed to break out of the limited revenue box by attracting significant reader subscriptions, but they’re the exceptions. Very few readers are aware of any of this and continue to gripe about being asked to pay $10 a month to read their local news.
It’ll be interesting to see what shakes out in the years to come, whether someone can figure out a new business model that at least supports the work. So far, many have tried but there’s been no real solution or obvious way forward. (For years it was believed that digital ad revenue would rise & replace the falling print ad revenue; but then Google and Facebook swept all of that out from under everyone else, so here we are …)
An older businessman at our church used to frequently tell me, “They should have been prepared for what was coming and had a plan.” I’d always answer, “How?” No one could foresee how the digital revolution and the Internet, including the rise of social media, would slash through businesses in such unpredictable ways and leave so many in ruins. And it’s still all evolving with undoubtedly more unforeseen changes to come.
Some are convinced that that leftward tilt among the Democrats will guarantee another four years for Trump. That may well happen. But it’s also possible that, just as a lot of people voted for Trump mostly to vote against Clinton, people will hold their noses and vote for whomever will be the Democrat in order to vote against Trump.
One of my friends from church has come out in favor of Tulsi Gabbard, for her anti-war, anti-policing-the-world stance.
It is going to be a knock down, drag out election season, that is for sure. Whomever wins, I’m sure a lot of people will be surprised and dismayed.
DJ – Yeah, I think she is pro-choice. My friend would probably make the point that being against all the wars and military actions we’ve been involved in for the last couple decades or so is a different kind of pro-life position.
Some feel that the abortion issue is a done deal. Abortion is legal, and probably will be for the foreseeable future. Our job is to try to “change hearts and minds,” which is more effective than changing laws. The younger generations are supposedly more pro-life than boomers, which is a positive thing. So there are many conservatives and Christians who are focusing on other political issues.
I am torn about that. It is hard to imagine supporting and voting for someone who would be pro-choice, but there are other important issues.

From yesterday, as AJ confirmed, border facilities are run by for-profit corporations. Thus the goal is to maximize shareholder value not provide basic accommodations for migrants. Hence, the lack of soap, shampoo, blankets etc. is deliberate. The corporations are not overwhelmed, they are delibrating making money by minimizing by providing sub par living accommodations.
The closed Facebook page gives insight into the people working in these facilities. Yes, black humor is common and I’m sure teacher stafff rooms would upset many. I’m not surprised US arms were found in the wrong hands. International arm sales are profit motivated not security motivated. The Arab states have been and still are funneling US arms everywhere. The migrant camps issue is all over the left side of the internet. Its really motivating the progressive base. That base stayed home in the rust belt states last election. Its also reached conversations among my friends including my Dutch Reformed friends/relatives in Michigan and Iowa.
This issue also is contrasted to the Republican pro life stance. Democrats can rightly point out that the abortion rate is at historic lows and its time for a more comprehensive pro life position, including caring for migrant children as opposing to exploiting them for profit.
Exit polls miss the people who didn’t vote. A platform emphasizing healthcare and education will motivate new voters. Empasizing the migrant issue and the exploitation of children will also bring in new voters, enough to tip the scales in Pennsylvania and Michigan.
I don’t see the Democratic frontrunners as socialist. They are presenting pragmatic solutions and ideas. I was always imprssed by Harris so I’m glad to see her move up the polls but she’s far from a socialist. I should know I am one.
Btw, the Georgia election did have a third world optics to it. One of the candidates for governor is also in charge of the election… for appearance sake he should have abstained from that position.

The 46-year-old blamed what he called “the Trump administration’s unlawful ‘Remain in Mexico’ program,” meant to reduce the attractiveness of U.S. asylum requests that in the past had allowed claimants to remain in the U.S. for years as their cases wound their way through the courts.

Here are some facts about the 2016 presidential election:
Most would agree that the four most important states in President Trump’s victory were Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and Florida. In those four states, the share of voters who said in exit polls that they considered themselves liberals were 27%, 27%, 25% and 25%, respectively. In each state, the share of voters who called themselves moderates was at least 10 percentage points higher.
And in the three of those states where voters were asked about health care, the share who said Obamacare went too far was significantly higher—more than 10 percentage points—than the share saying Obamacare didn’t go far enough.
So here is a question about the 2020 presidential race: Why do Democrats think they can win back such states with a more liberal agenda, one built in particular around going much further than Obamacare toward a Medicare-for-all, government-run health system?
That is the political puzzler that emerges after last week’s initial Democratic Party debates. In those debates, two camps emerged: a majority of the candidates seemed to fit into a progressive camp that would move the party to the left, and a minority of candidates fit into a more-moderate mold, who would root the party more in the center.
It’s still way early in the nominating process, but first impressions matter. And the first impression from the debates was of a dominant progressive wing, and a party moving to the left on the economy, health care and immigration. That road is at least a risky one. …

Some of the notable events this year included the closing of the Youngstown Vindicator, the only daily in the Ohio city, with 144 jobs lost, and the sale of the New Orleans Times-Picayune resulting in the loss of most of the 250 newsroom jobs.
But the troubles have also impacted the digital sector with BuzzFeed cutting 200 employees in January and Verizon eliminating 800 jobs in its media division, which includes Yahoo, AOL, and HuffPost, the Challenger report noted.
The report noted that media companies have been unable to keep pace with Facebook and Google in tailoring ads for customers based on their interests, making it hard to generate online revenue. …

Figuring out a new business model for media has been, so far, impossible. Large national publications such as the NYT, WaPo, WSJ have managed to break out of the limited revenue box by attracting significant reader subscriptions, but they’re the exceptions. Very few readers are aware of any of this and continue to gripe about being asked to pay $10 a month to read their local news.
It’ll be interesting to see what shakes out in the years to come, whether someone can figure out a new business model that at least supports the work. So far, many have tried but there’s been no real solution or obvious way forward. (For years it was believed that digital ad revenue would rise & replace the falling print ad revenue; but then Google and Facebook swept all of that out from under everyone else, so here we are …)
An older businessman at our church used to frequently tell me, “They should have been prepared for what was coming and had a plan.” I’d always answer, “How?” No one could foresee how the digital revolution and the Internet, including the rise of social media, would slash through businesses in such unpredictable ways and leave so many in ruins. And it’s still all evolving with undoubtedly more unforeseen changes to come.

Some are convinced that that leftward tilt among the Democrats will guarantee another four years for Trump. That may well happen. But it’s also possible that, just as a lot of people voted for Trump mostly to vote against Clinton, people will hold their noses and vote for whomever will be the Democrat in order to vote against Trump.
One of my friends from church has come out in favor of Tulsi Gabbard, for her anti-war, anti-policing-the-world stance.
It is going to be a knock down, drag out election season, that is for sure. Whomever wins, I’m sure a lot of people will be surprised and dismayed.

DJ – Yeah, I think she is pro-choice. My friend would probably make the point that being against all the wars and military actions we’ve been involved in for the last couple decades or so is a different kind of pro-life position.
Some feel that the abortion issue is a done deal. Abortion is legal, and probably will be for the foreseeable future. Our job is to try to “change hearts and minds,” which is more effective than changing laws. The younger generations are supposedly more pro-life than boomers, which is a positive thing. So there are many conservatives and Christians who are focusing on other political issues.
I am torn about that. It is hard to imagine supporting and voting for someone who would be pro-choice, but there are other important issues.

I suspect the desire to engage in wars is at a low ebb in this country right now, not one of the top issues we face. Been there, done that, we’re all pretty much spent. I don’t see that as an immediate concern — maybe in another generation or two, or maybe not ever unless it’s a genuine WWII situation (but then, it’s always hard to tell at the time, isn’t it?). From yesterday, as AJ confirmed, border facilities are run by for-profit corporations. Thus the goal is to maximize shareholder value not provide basic accommodations for migrants. Hence, the lack of soap, shampoo, blankets etc. is deliberate. The corporations are not overwhelmed, they are delibrating making money by minimizing by providing sub par living accommodations.
The closed Facebook page gives insight into the people working in these facilities. Yes, black humor is common and I’m sure teacher stafff rooms would upset many. But not of these oral conversations mock the dead, are written down nor do they threaten politicans. In the facebook page, memes were posted of AOC and others that were derogatory and threatening and the right wonders why AOC felt threatened.

The migrant camps issue is all over the left side of the internet. Its really motivating the progressive base. That base stayed home in the rust belt states last election. Its also reached conversations among my friends including my Dutch Reformed friends/relatives in Michigan and Iowa.
This issue also is contrasted to the Republican pro life stance. Democrats can rightly point out that the abortion rate is at historic lows and its time for a more comprehensive pro life position, including caring for migrant children as opposing to exploiting them for profit.
Exit polls miss the people who didn’t vote. A platform emphasizing healthcare and education will motivate new voters. Empasizing the migrant issue and the exploitation of children will also bring in new voters, enough to tip the scales in Pennsylvania and Michigan.
I don’t see the Democratic frontrunners as socialist. They are presenting pragmatic solutions and ideas. I was always imprssed by Harris so I’m glad to see her move up the polls but she’s far from a socialist. I should know I am one.

I hope I’m wrong, but the nation seems to be in decline (permanent or not, there’s no telling). The country seems hopelessly divided and in a constant state of rage at “the other” side. It’s simply not a very hopeful time politically speaking.

Disputing an election until the dust settles is quite common. Being in charge of an election in which you are a canidate is banana republic level. There would be no dispute if he had noted the obvious conflict of interest and stepped down.

~ Philadelphia printer and newspaper publisher John Dunlap had a busy day after the Congress approved the final wording of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 — he was the person charged with printing the first official version of the document so that it could get into circulation. Printers and newspapers across the colonies were key in stirring the people on both sides of the dispute with London as the colonies moved toward this break. As James Madison would say years later, the press had its abuses, but we wouldn’t have a country without it. ~

I have yet to hear one even remotely political statement. 🙂
But it’s pro-military and pro-America, so Dems are probably hating it.
