  1. Morning all.
    Chas this story is for you.
    I went to a restaurant today to get a nice burger. I told them I was allergic to onions. So they said that all of their burgers have just a slight amount of onion in a sauce that they add. We worked on it and I decided on a grilled chicken breast to go. When I got home and was eating it, I saw that it had onions in the condiments. Several fresh slices just laying there. I took them out, but can still taste a little bit. Here’s hoping I don’t get sick. I can’t believe that after changing my whole order based on my allergies, I ended up with onions.

    I’m not allergic, but I can taste the smallest bit of onion in anything. It is on my tongue like a gun shot in the ear.
    Elvera had a sister, a sweet lady, who at family dinners, would say. “Charlie. This has onions but you can’t taste them””> I never said anything, but wondered “If you can’t taste them, why add them?” But they usually made a separate dish for me.

  3. I went through a decade of being allergic to milk products. I’d get sick, like a cold, for several days, and sometimes it was with just a small amount (e.g., I’d eat a candy bar that had been “safe” as in milk-free the previous time I’d bought it, and I wouldn’t think to read the label this time). But people tended not to believe me that it was a real allergy; they just thought I got a lot of colds and I imagined the connection. (I’ve since read that that particular version of a dairy allergy can be quite serious, but yes, that is officially one version of a milk allergy.) After several years of not touching dairy and not having any reactions I traced to inadvertent exposure, I tried again and didn’t have problems, but I went several years without eating much dairy (before it got really sensitive) and then a decade with no ice cream, butter, or even dairy in small amounts as one of the ingredients in something–I read the labels on everything and stuck to “safe” dishes at potlucks.

    One particular relative, I’d go to their house for a few days, and everything she made, I’d have to go through item by item, “Does this have any milk products in it?” She’d get to one side dish that she’d have to say “Yes,” and she would say, “Just a little bit,” and roll her eyes like I was being silly. She’d never volunteer “This has milk in it” or simply avoid cooking with dairy while I visited; I had to ask for each item. Her son now has a serious gluten issue, and I’ve often wondered if she ever remembers the casual way she treated my allergy, and hopes no one ever treats the gluten issue that way!

  4. Good Morning. I have slept until my head hurts. I feel like I have a sore throat. Swallowing is uncomfortable.
    The care has been excellent but I am ready to go home.
    Mr P was surprised when I told him I was born in this hospital.

  5. Cheryl, I knew a girl who had a milk allergy that expressed itself in the form of cold-like symptoms (cough, running nose, etc.). There is a lot still not fully understood about allergies – as the recent discoveries about this meat-allergy producing tick shows: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/alpha-gal-syndrome/symptoms-causes/syc-20428608. I have a cousin who became temporarily intolerant to milk products after she was treated for a parasite she picked up in Africa. Allergies, like auto-immune diseases, may be triggered more often by infections from biological agents than we are aware of yet. I know that my allergies (expressed in asthmatic attacks) have gotten much worse since I went to West Africa (although they were beginning to get worse before that time). I have always wondered if the really nasty virus (it was so bad, I wondered at one point if it was Ebola) that I picked up a few months before my serious asthmatic attack had a role to play in my final breakdown, as I never felt fully recovered after that illness.

  6. I used to get a stomach ache every afternoon. Then someone, may have been my DIL suggested that I may be lactose intolerant. I switched to lactose free milk and haven’t had a problem since.

  7. Twenty two year old daughter ate everything while here with no indications of allergy. As soon as she moved out and started mingling with her new friends, she became very allergic to gluten and could not eat any. But if she did, she had special medicine to counter it. Then she was very allergic to dairy and could eat none of it. We discussed the differences of allergic reaction and intolerance and the idea of having a doctor determine if there is a true allergy or whatever. She is home now and has no troubles with gluten or dairy. In fact she has two cheese sandwiches almost every day. But she cannot eat eggs. Her dog, however, is deathly allergic to dairy….

    I understand that many people have allergies and it can be life threatening. I understand that a lot more people have sensitivities or even intolerance. But there are also quite a few people who think they do and stay away from things they don’t need to because they have jumped on the bandwagon. And some people just plain don’t like the taste of certain things and that too is fine.

    True allergies, it pays to find out what they are as they can be life threatening
    Intolerance can make you quite uncomfortable.
    Sensitivities can be annoying.

    But sometimes people give up entire food groups based on what others are doing and that can actually be harmful to the body by not getting the nutrients needed.

  9. Chas, I too can taste even the smallest amount of onion in foods. After years of no onions or onion powder because my husband gets migraines from anything onion, I can taste it like I just bit into an onion. It doesn’t bother me (much) but I can always taste even the smallest amount.

  10. Not quite the same thing, but. . .When The Boy was little, he liked to drink my coffee and tea out of my cup, so I switched to decaf coffee and tea. (I know I could have said no to him, but I liked sharing with him.) Now, when I happen to have something with caffeine, I really feel it. So when Nightingale and I occasionally get lattes, I make sure that it is in the morning. Last time I had a latte, it was in the afternoon, and I paid for it that night.

    Chickadee can detect if something has been made with a little stevia, as Nightingale used to do (substituting some stevia for some of the sugar in a dessert). Nightingale thought she was just imagining it and being picky. But Chickadee has picked up on stevia being in something even when she didn’t know beforehand. (I like stevia in my tea, but can’t stand it in coffee.)

  11. Morning!! We had a wonderful thunderstorm last evening…lots of lightening and thunder. When the rain subsided husband turned the deck light on just in time to see a big ol’ fat raccoon hanging on the deck rail ready to drink from the hummingbird feeder!! Rocky raccoon froze in place then scurried over to the neighbor’s property!! Foiled again!!!!
    Oh…and I like onions. I do like the more mild taste of green scallions though. 🙃

  14. Fireworks here.

    But the weather is still mild, in the 70s. It’s been a sweet, easy summer (weather-wise) so far for us.

    I have a memorial service at church to attend late this morning and after that I am going up to see Carol, but i’m not planning to stay long. The visits are really so much nicer and easier without the errand and road trips all over town. It’s a 1-2 hour visit vs. a 5-hour, almost all day visit. And so much more relaxing. But I do miss not being able to get her out, she’s very confined now. 😦

    Our gas prices are set to spike (again) on July 1, some new tax going into place, so everyone’s being reminded to fill up this weekend. I filled my tank yesterday and going forward I will try to remember to catch it before it goes below 1/2 full — so the price won’t be as shocking.

  20. Nightingale wrote this about their camping trip on Facebook, “The Murphy’s Law camping trip. If it weren’t for the fact that we were in Maine, this was the worst camping trip ever. The BEST worst camping trip ever!”

    It rained the first night, and the rain fly (I think that’s what she called it) was not taut enough, so the rain came in and they woke up to find much of their stuff soaked.
    They spent the next night in the car.
    It was overcast and chilly on every day except on the trip up to Maine or as they traveled home again.
    No whales appeared on the whale watch. (But she now has a ticket for a free whale watch within the next three years.)
    Part of the back bumper on the CRV is duct taped now thanks to a big rock she couldn’t see while backing up.
    The wood she bought for the camp fire wouldn’t burn. (She knows how to start a fire, so it wasn’t her fault. Someone later gave her some wood that burned fine.)

    I forget what else happened. But they made the best of it, and had a great time nonetheless. Now she can’t wait to go again. Nightingale loves Maine!

    In fact, she is planning for us to take a weekend trip sometime. Since camping is not my thing, we will stay in a motel, which is why it will only be for a weekend, maybe a three-day weekend. She wants us to go on a whale watch together, for one thing. (I am touched that she specifically wants to go with me.)

  21. We, too, once had a miserable camping trip to Maine in which my husband spent half the time under the van trying to keep it running.

    He did stop long enough for me to get out near the seashore and feel the breeze blow my hair off my face.

    “Have you had enough, yet? We need to keep moving.”

  22. Are we telling stories of miserable trips to Maine? ‘Cause I got one, that I think I have told it here before. When I was a young child, we went down to visit relatives in Nova Scotia. To cut through New York and the New England states is actually a shorter driving distance to Nova Scotia than going through Quebec and New Brunswick, and in those days, passports were not required at the Canada-U.S. border. Furthermore, my father had an uncle and cousins in Boston. So, we had stopped in Boston and were on our way north when we stopped to camp in Maine. We stopped after dark, which was our first mistake. We put up our big canvas tent, but there were as many mosquitos in the tent as outside by the time we finished. We retreated to the car, but it was so hot in the car we opened the windows, which let the mosquitos in… Also, a thunderstorm struck. We finished the night by packing up and driving away.

  23. Didn’t realize that my first post was a question of the day. Onions actually make me physically ill as do shellfish. It is hard to travel and have to ask questions of all airline food, etc. Back is better, tho still feeling tender.

  24. Jo, I don’t eat seafood I can’t identify because I’m deathly allergic to sea scallops.
    Scallops are the only allergy I know of, but I nearly died. I was in the AF at Westover AFB at the time. The guys wanted me to go to the hospital. I wanted to die.

    My Maine story? Maine is the only state east of the Mississippi that I haven’t visited.
    I think I have passed through the south edge of Michigan, if that counts.

  25. Chas – I’m sure I have mentioned this before, but Hubby was stationed at Westover AFB when he was in the Air Force Reserves. (He had served four years in the Air Force, and then was in the reserves for several years after that.)

  27. I do not have a Maine story from the state, but Art’s office is on N. Main St. and he has camped there. Oh! He did hike the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine so he has camped in Maine! I almost forgot about that.

  29. I almost forgot to mention that Nightingale actually likes the car better now that it is slightly damaged and duct-taped. Now it has character. 😀

    She loved her old Honda Civic, and that thing was pretty old. It was obvious that one of the doors had been replaced as the color was slightly off. (It was that way when she bought it.)

  31. Younger daughter, who loves to travel, loves Maine. If she has two or three days off work, sometimes she gets in the car to drive somewhere, just because she can. Last year one of those trips was to go see autumn leaves in New England. She stays in a hotel, though.

  33. I’ve never been to Maine either but it always struck me as a state I’d like. I think the farthest north I’ve been on the east coast was Albany, NY — to watch my friend’s husband, a public defender, argue a case in court. He lost.

  35. I almost got to Maine. Mrs L and I took a road trip while visiting friends in Connecticut. We went up to Vermont and New Hampshire, intending to swing through a corner of Maine, but it was getting late so we didn’t.

  36. Our nephew is moving with his family to Maine. They vacationed there and fell in love with a quaint little town…they put an offer on a house and it was accepted. They are moving from FL to Maine in August. Oh to be young again…..

  40. Kizzie I am not certain of the job plans. Nephew works with DaVita and it’s possible he can work remotely. His wife is a stay at home Mom to three young ones under the age of 6. They are “adventurers” to say the least… 😊

  41. Rise and Shine…it’s Morning!! I have been awake since 3am….two cups of coffee and now I am yawing. But…now I need to ready myself for church. There is a 5th Sunday church lunch after the service. Then five young men from church are coming over to the house for dessert….I may need a nap after that!

  42. Beautiful day here. Twenty two has decided to milk goats. We had two kids butchered yesterday so their moms have plenty of milk to share. Helps them, helps us. I don’t care for the removal of animals but we would have thousands by now and nothing to feed them and so it goes.

  43. Goat milk will be good for everyone. We milk ours and I have customers that help mitigate the feed costs.

    I have not been to Maine, but would like to see either fall color or spring maple syrup taps.

  49. The Subaru “Wicked Big Meet” is happening today in my town. I’m not going, but I think it’s neat that it happens in my little town each year (thanks to our having the Stafford Motor Speedway).

    The Stafford Motor Speedway has races every Friday night throughout the summer. The races can be heard all over town, except maybe not in the far outreaches (we have a lot of land mass). Even with the air conditioning on, the races are pretty loud. But it is oddly comforting in a way. Most of us don’t mind it, and like hearing them start up again each late spring.

  51. What a gut wrenching video that is. So what is the answer? We are slowly seeing this happen in CO. South CO Springs has a new tent city popping up after they “evicted” the homeless camp in another location….they just moved along the creek further south. They use the creek as their toilet facilities and are now piling up tons of new trash in their new location. Most of these homeless people are addicts. They will not go to the Rescue Mission because there are rules. Some say fix up the closed down Sears building to house them….it would be trashed within months just as was the hotel that was donated…that hotel had to be razed. Such an awful dilemma…but God…our only hope……

  52. I am doing quite well. I took a tramadol at 1am and that was the last. I did take some ibuprofen a little while ago.
    I obviously didn’t go to church today. I have been sitting outside in the sun reading. I finally feel well hydrated. Yesterday I made Mr P stop at Tropical Smoothie and got a watermelon “mojito” smoothie. It felt so good. All seems to be going well. I will change my voicemail back on Tuesday. I am secretly enjoying not being able to drive or talk too much.

    I have taken a lot of passion flower and tiger lily photos in our yard. It seems we have twice as many as last year.

  55. We’re finally getting some summer weather here, in the 80s. It feels hot but that’s because it hasn’t been this warm in a while, I think. The sun is out, too. I can my sun-splashed backyard from inside the cooler den/office with the window closed tightly and the ceiling fan running …

    So another interesting sermon (“What’s in a Prayer Meeting? John 14:1-14) by our visiting (from South Carolina) seminary prof. today.

    He pointed out how desperate things are in the world (adding that might be a little less obvious to those in the south where church-going remains something of the norm). The ‘greater works than these’ in Scripture, he contends, are the corporate praying for the spread of the gospel; specifically for the Holy Spirit to empower the preaching of the Word, bringing sinners into the light and to Christ.

    Churches don’t pray for this enough, he suggested, and he’s no doubt right. (Interestingly he pointed out that someone suggested the earlier prayers of the Puritans may have been responsible for the first Great Awakening that came many, many years later.)

  58. Pastor Billy was preaching from Romans 12, and was talking about the importance of having a “culture of honor”. (He sometimes used the term “honor culture”, which made me cringe a bit, since it has a meaning far different from the one he intended). What he meant was honoring God and each other, in what we do and what we say.

  59. At church I heard that our past pastor did a wonderful memorial service for the young guy who took his life.

    We had a really good Life Group class today. I enjoy the small group I am with more than any other I have been with ever. The sermon was good today, too. Our part time pastor who is the manager of Casting Crowns preached from Haggai 1-2 on The Dangers of Misplaced Priorities. For the month of July we are combining both services and Life Groups so that will be interesting.

  60. Our Pastor taught from John 9….very good Word….
    Two of our young men came over after the after service pot luck. The other fellas forgot today was the Pikes Peak Hill Climb and they had tickets to go…but we are enjoying our two fellas. Husband helped one of them with fixing his bike while the brother took a nap on the sofa. So far I have fed them twice. They are out in the breakfast nook chatting it up with husband and eating…they are so pleasant…after I put the food out on the table I left the room so they could continue the male bonding… 🙃
