When I joined the AF, I measured in officially at 5’10.75″.
I noticed in past years that some of the clothes I wore didn’t fit anymore. I had to take them up.
I had no idea that people shrunk as they age.
But they do.
It doesn’t have to do with posture.
I have just lost about an inch of height.
Morning, Chas. I found where that inch went. It is quite humorous. My feet are growing longer. I do not wear the same size shoe at all. So… my missing height is coming out my toes!!!
Chas, please don’t take this the wrong (hurtful) way, but I had a chuckle over your comment that you have “never concerned myself with weird interpretations of scripture concerning sin and the last days.” Because there are several denominations, including my own Lutheran Church (Missouri) that consider your beliefs about the end times “weird.” But like you said, we won’t break fellowship over it and we love you dearly.
Good morning. No idea what the weather is like out there this morning, but I should know in another hour. I don’t hear rain, but I do hear roosters. Can you imagine life without roosters? I can’t and don’t want to.

But I noticed this morning that Paul, in I Cor. 1:7 says “…. waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Yesterday, several members of my family and I were discussing the implications of my discovery regarding a certain person’s dabbling with weird interpretations of Scripture. I pointed out that the really crucial point of error in believing that there were people before Adam or that a creation of earth that was destroyed before this creation was that it diminished the centrality of Jesus Christ. As John says in the beginning of his Gospel, not only was the Word in the beginning and was God, but “all things were made by him, and without him was not anything made that was made.” Paul, in the beginning of his epistle to the Colossian church makes it even clearer:
“Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all he might have the preeminence.”
The Creation of God was made by and for our Lord. Christ is the Word, and he is the image of God. This world we live in was created to reveal God in Jesus Christ, the second Adam. Again, Paul sums it up, this time in the first epistle to the Corinthian church, “For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.” This verse is in the section, chapter 15, where Paul is talking about the hope of the Resurrection. He compares and contrasts Christ with Adam (see also Romans 5:14-19). As the firstfruits of the new Creation, Christ’s Resurrection is the answer to Adam’s sin and the death of Creation. If Adam was not the first human, then Christ’s salvation would not be effective for all humans. The beginning of the story must be true for the end of the story to be true. The problem with the weird interpretation that I discovered is that it removes Christ from the centre of the story, and Christ is always the centre of the story.
So it is with those who say Jews are not saved through Jesus Christ. Paul, in his epistle to the Roman church, would beg to differ, in chapter 10:
“Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believes.”
To say that salvation exists for the Jews outside of Christ is to deny that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life and that no one comes to God the Father but through him. This is why these interpretations are so serious, so deadly, because they deny the Lord Jesus Christ.
Other variations in belief, particularly around eschatology, specific church structure, etc. do not inherently do this to the centrality of Christ. But when a belief crosses that line and removes Jesus Christ from the centre of the story, it is heresy. John was unequivocal in his first epistle: Who is a liar but he that denies that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denies the Father and the Son.”
One day I went down to my pond nearing dusk, just in case the great egret was still down there that had been there earlier in the day. It wasn’t. But right at the edge of the pond (no more than 10-12 feet from me, though I was also looking down on it) I could see half of a snapping turtle’s shell. I didn’t know if it was feeding underwater or what, but I started taking photos. And then occasionally I could see a claw or two. Eventually I saw a head, and then two heads, and realized I was seeing snapping turtles mating (mostly underwater).
I figured that most amateur herpetologists probably never got to watch that in the wild and so close, so I took several photos (though none came out wonderfully). The next day I was down at the pond again, and saw a snapping turtle shell farther out in the water. This time when I started seeing claws I knew what I was seeing. Only I think this pair is lying sideways, the back of one shell to us (and the reflection). I had to move around to a place where I could see them without the water having too many reflections, and there I was looking through waving grasses and never did get a good photo that showed a head. But I thought this impressionistic view of a shell, two turtle claws (which you rarely see), and the reflection was pretty cool. You can see part of a second (third) foot between the claw and shell on the front (left) end too.
Morning! We have had lovely mist falling since yesterday and it continues this morning. Transitioning from winter to spring is lovely time of year….but the shovel is still handy for when I shall need it….
That photo up there looks to me to be one of a bug. I don’t see a turtle in there at all 😳
Chas I have always been 5’2” and I am now 5’ and 1 and 3 quarters of an inch….I told my doctor I am “growing into the dirt”.
Nancy Jill, the claws at left are the bottom of a turtle foot (which is something you normally would never see) and the claws at right are the top of a turtle foot, and in the middle is a turtle shell, the top of it, what portion sticks out of the water.
What I heard about the shrinkage is that you lose a tenth of an inch every year after 50. That would be average loss, of course, but would add up to an inch a decade. I’m guessing some people “skew” the average. My husband is heading toward 60, so he “should have” lost more than half an inch. Liking his height, he said he won’t be measured again–but he was measured a few months ago and still showed his full height. And my brother who is well into his sixties, and should be an inch taller than him, still is a bit taller than him, so I don’t think either of them has lost anything in height.
Photo, to me, looked like something I wouldn’t want to find floating in my cereal bowl.
Yes, I remember a co-worker mentioning her grandmother suddenly being so “tiny” but she refused the idea that people “shrank” with age (I think later she accepted that’s what was happening). I believe our spines begin to compress w/gravity (and wear and tear) and that explains the height loss, at least partially.

Like Jo, I also have gone up in shoe size. From wearing a 6 or 7 shoe all my adult years, I strayed into the 8s about 10-15 years ago (shocking to me then) and now I buy 9s (9-1/2 in boots).
I think my foot is shrinking. I used to be a 9, but now wear an 8.5. I think the size of intervertebral discs shrink, thus causing the spine to become more compressed.
My foot size has increased too. I assumed it was because I’ve gained weight, that my shoe size was increasing along with my ring size. ?? All I know is that most of my dress shoes are now tight on me.
Checking my question online, it looks like most say if it hasn’t cleared your account, wait 2 weeks and then call the 800 number to see if you can verify the check was received.
Government! I would always get a confirmation tracking number when sending any payment to the IRS…just so they could not say I didn’t send it.
I just tried to sign up for Medicare online. Because we have frozen our credit reporting due to many breaches within insurance companies and banking institutions, they would not allow me to sign up. I now have to drive into the Springs to the Social Security office and get an “activation” code after showing my ID, SS card, birth certificate, proof of address….then they will allow me to sign up. When asked if I could just “unfreeze” my credit report for a week I was told it might allow me but then again it might not. ‘Oy!!!
Hi, all. My eye is very dilated so I can’t yet read the posts. The procedure went quickly. Nothing seemed amiss. I have a followup next week. Have I ever said how much I dislike having dilated eyes? It wears me out. But it is worth it to monitor and protect the vision.

Nancyjill, you just reminded me, my CPA always recommends the tracking # too and I TOTALLY forgot about that, I just stuck a stamp on it and mailed it. But if it had been stolen, the check for sure would have been cashed by now, right? 🙂
While shrinking is partly due to thinning spinal discs, the spinal vertebrae also contribute to the loss of height when there is bone density loss. The permanently stooped posture of many frail elderly is due to osteoporosis causing the vertebrae to basically collapse. There is another, less well known condition altering bone density, called Paget’s disease, in which the bone is remodeled: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/pagets-disease-of-bone/symptoms-causes/syc-20350811 It can cause significant loss of height. My great grandfather had Paget’s and he went from over 6′ to under 5′, mostly because of the loss of height in his spine. His daughter, my maternal grandmother, also had it, and although she was small in stature to begin with, it made her even smaller. My mother has it, and two of her siblings have been diagnosed with spinal stenosis, which can be caused by Paget’s. Our family has found over the years that many physicians are unfamiliar with the disease, as it is relatively rare, and so they do not look for it until it is brought up that it runs in the family.
I am thinking if anything it would be lost within the postal system. I do know when I send anything government be it local or federal they take their sweet time in chasing the check. The state of Colorado is the worst at holding the checks for weeks!
If you mailed it on the 12th it probably didn’t get there until the 17th…that’s why they call it snail mail 🐌 ✉️….I wouldn’t worry quite yet….
My mom was taller than me by a couple inches, but by the time she was dying, she was a little shorter than me. She was enjoying some shows about “little people” (dwarves) that were popular on a certain cable channel. I teased her that she liked those shows so much because she was becoming one of them. 🙂
Nope, the turtle is holding up a shell as a screen, so you can’t see anything. 🙂 I did post some other shots on Flickr that I elected not to send here (they are still largely under the water, but more obviously mating), but this one seemed more to me like a cool design with a “story” behind it.
I have been trying to drag truth out of a scared pregnant person getting ready to move home. I keep telling her we are not here to condemn but to help and it will be easier to help if we know the truth. At first she was very defensive but when I pointed out her ever changing truths, she started to open up a bit. Pray for us. I am going back in….

The IRS still hasn’t cashed my check, should I be worried? I mailed it on Friday, April 12, put it in the slot inside a post office by noon.
