  1. I won’t mark with 🙂 and 😦 but let you figure out what is what.

This week our electrician and his assistant came back, and attempted to finish the job. They got close: several ceiling lights installed, a microwave outlet rewired to get its own circuit, and more.

When one living area is not yet in commission for use, with tools and such set up around what will eventually be living space, and with one of the areas they were wiring being my office and another one our bedroom and the third my husband’s studio, and two men going back and forth between such areas, my spaces to “hang out” were quite limited. With my husband sitting beside me on the couch and occasionally making comments and the men talking to each other, I found I wasn’t able to read, either. (Previous visits I have sat in the reading chair in our bedroom and read a book.) I finally ended up lying down on the couch and dozed off a bit.

Then came a loud crash. Too loud to just be a hammer dropping or anything of the sort. Sure enough, our electrician (or at least his legs) had come through the hall ceiling.

My office light never did get hooked up, and our hall has some boards nailed to the ceiling until they can come back and fix it. He said that’s only the second time (in forty years) of going through a ceiling.

Also, I have had one or more books to edit nonstop since November (a good thing). I finished a big book this week, and another author has her book back to look it over and answer my questions after the first edit, but she tells me she doesn’t expect to get it back to me till the first week in April or later. So I decided I can finally get going on stripping the wallpaper in the hall bathroom (which will be an enormous task–it won’t come off easily, and will take several days). Sure enough, just saying aloud “I have a gap in my schedule next week, so I can work on the wallpaper” was enough to bring me another project. We’re both happy about that–this electrician is inexpensive, but a several-day job isn’t cheap. And my husband’s laptop chose now as a good time to die. So . . . income is useful.

But our daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter are coming in a week for an overnight visit (a wedding to attend–we will babysit Baby S during it–and then to attend church with us). This daughter hasn’t seen our condo yet, as she was pregnant on moving day. (The other has been here on moving day and two or three other times, including last week’s trip to surprise my husband.) So I will need to spend time tidying this coming week, even if I can’t yet work on wallpaper. (Bummer! Wallpaper removal is so much fun. Yeah, whatever.)

  2. Oy, we had a small hole in our ceiling for a couple of years – husband pushed a board through when he stepped on the end and it had shifted and could now drop down. The end result is the prettiest ceiling in my house 🙂 We covered it with boards painted white with a sheen and installed a hall light that casts pretty patterns on it. It makes me happy every time I see it.

  3. 😦 Haven’t seen Chickadee in almost a month, and doesn’t look like I’ll be seeing her too soon.

😦 The situation with Chickadee and the McKs. They seem unwilling to drop her off or pick her up even just once a week, and for the past month, Nightingale’s schedule has made it unworkable to both pick her up and drop her off. (Mrs. McK would be absolutely devastated if one of her daughters were in a similar situation.)

For a little while now, I have had a bad feeling inside that something bad is going on there. Not sure if that is a warning from the Holy Spirit (which has happened before with these kinds of thoughts) or just my own sometimes-overactive imagination (which has also happened before with these kinds of thoughts).

🙂 At least no one fell through my ceiling this week. 😀

  4. 😦 Hugs, Kizzie and continued prayer.

🙂 We picked out some of the things for the bathroom redo and have some samples here to make more decisions. We are leaving the ceiling alone on advice of the plumber/wall guy who came out. It is in good shape, has a sky-light and decent light fixture and fan. We decided against any wiring changes. My husband wired what we have and it is adequate. Some changes would be nice there, but not enough to take the extra time and expense to have it done. I will be happy to have it all finished. So many decisions and working around other people is not fun IMO.

  5. 🙂 Gathered some good information from Sherwin Williams rep yesterday on the why of the paint bubbling and on how to proceed, but not until our moisture is completely gone.

😦 Very uncomfortable new office set up but 🙂 shorter commute.

😦 Heard from former city editor (who’s still with the company in a different editing capacity) that more buyouts are in the works but reporters are exempt — only being offered to everyone else, but including editors. A memo is supposed to go out Monday. He said it’s a secret but he’s told a bunch of people already. I told him we work in journalism, that’s pretty much what we do — find out stuff and tell the people who will be affected.

😦 How in the world can we hobble along with even fewer people?

🙂 Someday I might write a book about the history of our former daily paper that was shuttered in 1998. Someday I’ll probably have the extra time to do something like that.

🙂 Had a 3-hour lunch with a former co-worker who took the last buyout and since then has retrained as a paralegal and now works in downtown LA. She’s doing well, she and the boyfriend are planning a trip to Europe in June.

  6. 😦 Also heard from one of our advertising reps today who said they’ve been slapped with a much higher quota they now have to reach which she said is basically impossible. If they don’t reach it, they’ll be written up. She said “So after 32 years I’ll get my first write up.”

They think it’s a way for the company to show cause to let people go without offering them a severance package.

  7. Travesty.

I’ve been afraid of falling through a ceiling from time to time, but so far it hasn’t happened.

Amazing snow in Tahoe. I liked to shovel snow when I lived in Connecticut–but I never had to throw it above my head into a snow drift to clear the driveway!

Adorables 11 and 9 are now skiing black diamonds with abandon. Six-month-old (as of yesterday) is now crawling and pulling to a stand. When your mother is an athlete, I guess this isn’t surprising–but we were still surprised.

Glad to be home after a hectic traveling ten days, though of course I now have grandma duty.

  8. Enjoy your grandma duty, Michelle!

As I have written previously, I have had a lot of grandma duty in the evenings for the past couple months, as Nightingale’s schedule has had a lot of 2nd shifts. This next week had three 2nd shifts scheduled, but yesterday I noticed that Nightingale had crossed off the 2nd shift on Thursday and written in 1st shift. I did a little happy dance when I saw that. 😀
