  4. After reading the end of yesterday’s posts I realize I need to get some toenail polish because it will soon be sandal weather here. With my current vision, painting my toenails could provide some fascinating results.

    I am up so late because I just had a phone conversation with Wesley. I had wanted to talk to him earlier, but he was out playing board games with friends.

  8. I confess, I painted my toenails before leaving for Florida last week; and wore flip-flops the whole time we were there (except for my bicycling shoes, which are “sport sandals” and do show the toes).

  10. That photo was from a few days ago. At least in Indiana, if you want to see woodpeckers, your best bet is to be out among trees in the ten a.m. hour. When I have had multiple sightings and several different species, it is at least usually (possibly always) in that hour of the morning. Sure enough, a few days ago my husband was going to the store just about 10:00, so I had him drop me off near one of the trails, and I was out there from about 10:00 to around noon, and for the first hour I heard and saw multiple woodpeckers, including three species in one five-minute period.

    I saw the pileated woodpeckers, male and female, repeatedly, with several of the sightings being the birds coming and going to this giant sycamore tree that really dwarfs them. The tree was quite a distance from where I was standing, so I had no fear of scaring them and no chance to get good close-ups, but I did get several good shots. In this shot, I was looking more at the silhouettes, the shapes of everything, than at details. I thought it an interesting assortment of branches and limbs, and I waited for the pileated to be in classic woodpecker pose to take the photo.

    On the right you get a good look at the classic peeling bark pattern of the sycamore tree. And if you know how large a pileated woodpecker is (roughly crow-sized), then you get a hint of just how big this tree is, that it has limbs this large many feet up in the air. It grows quite near a creek. I’m not good at estimating size, but it’s enormous. For another size comparison, you can see a seedball just below the bird and another in front of one of the limbs on the right side. Those seed balls are more than an inch wide, just smaller than a golf ball, and this is how thick the branches are dozens of feet in the air (30, 40, 50 feet high? Higher? Couldn’t tell you, but it’s high.)

  11. I saw an Eastern Bluebird outside my window today. They always remind me of my mother because she gave me a sweatshirt with an embossed picture of a mommy Bluebird with babies in a nest on the front.

    Yesterday I was thinking how the hook and eye closure on bras is much like the waistband closure on men’s slacks except the bra has three or so small hooks and eyes and the waistband usually has just one large one,.

  12. We enjoy watching pileated woodpeckers. I often hear Woody Woodpecker in my mind when they visit. I also think of my mom, since she enjoyed watching them so much. I suppose she has some Florida birds she now enjoys to watch.

  14. Re: painted toenails – Mrs L doesn’t paint hers. But then, she doesn’t paint her finger nails either, and she wears no makeup or jewelry other than her wedding and engagement rings.

    The only makeup she ever used was lipstick.
    She took a beauty course when we were at Southwestern, They showed her how to wear eye shadow and all sorts of stuff.
    But she didn’t look real in it, so she went back to just lipstick.
    We wears beads and bracelets. That’s all
    She wore her engagement and wedding rings for years. But, fortunately, I saw her wedding ring on the table at a McDonalds and retrieved them. She doesn’t wear them now.

  16. Natural-looking makeup exists and is very doable, application wise. It’s you, but subtly better. 🙂 I’ll sometimes skip it altogether on weekends — and I wear lighter, barely-there blendable colors and generally less of everything now that I’m a bit, ahem, older — but most days it’s still a very quick part of my morning routine (and worth it, I always conclude after the 5- to 10-minute process is done). But with makeup, less is more the older we get, I think.

    I’ve never been one to paint nails. I would occasionally get into fingernail painting, but that never lasted long, just way too much trouble. Toenails maybe got painted when I was a teen — once or twice — but that was it. Feet, especially older feet, aren’t all that pretty to call attention to, right?

    We had a good downpour during the early-morning hours, I was happy. It’s lightly raining now but the sky is gray and the rain should continue through the weekend. And more rain will return for Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday.

    The other day I met with the port exec who retired six years ago but who still volunteers at our maritime museum — I interviewed him about our historic Red Cars and the project the port carried out to bring a few of them back on line for about 12 years. Anyway, as an aside he emailed me later to kind of vent about the media in general and specifically about the proposed John Wayne Airport name change dust up (one of his in-laws was a John Wayne friend, I believe, though I may have read that wrong). I told him I felt and shared his frustration about much of it.

    He was one of my favorite port sources always, though, and it was fun to meet up with him again, we talked frequently during the Red Car project which took way longer than anyone imagined. He still jokes that his hair turned gray during those years.

  17. I do still love to wear earrings. I fell out of the habit for a while, however, during the house chaos and after several months of not wearing them apparently (I really just hadn’t paid much attention), I went to put some earrings on and found one ear had semi-closed up. I managed to poke the earring through the thin layer of skin that had formed and decided I’d better get back into the habit of putting in at least some studs all the time as I doubt I’d go through getting my ears pierced all over again.

    Thanks to all of your prayers for my son. He is very depressed right now about several events in his life, starting with the death if his mom. Also, the heart-breaking deaths of two of his classmates at Fultondale High School didn’t help. There was no suicide attempt. Please continue in your prayers as he heals in the coming months.   27. Continuing to lift up the Kid before our Lord. Kbells was such a supporter and worrier over her son….how he must miss her. And in the teen years those emotions do seem to take it’s toll. Prayers for Dad as he seeks to support and encourage his son….
    The snow has stalled but the icy fog has been hanging around. They tell us a little later on the snow will come in as a dry snow due to the cold temps accompanying the front. The swings of the atmospheric pressure has been causing headaches for me.
    I paint my nails just to keep them from splitting. I have the thinnest little nails. I do paint my toenails…just because it makes my ugly feet feel a little prettier 🦶 Oh…and no clasps…sports bras..slip it over your head and be done with it! 🙃

  28. Encountering serious illness and death before one is 18 can be jarring. Life can be so care-free in many respects while we’re kids, so being confronted with life’s grim realities before adulthood is very hard and can leave a mark.

    I’m clearing out the office/den room today, I should be able to finish this task this weekend (I started it last weekend and expected to finish it then but it took longer than I thought). The desk still has a lot of things on top of it — clearing off that and organizing the bookcase will be close to the final steps.

    Everything from packs of new or partially used greeting cards to dog grooming tools and ‘what-nots’ were found in several wooden boxes I keep in there — those boxes are so handy (and nice looking) but I will have to put labels on them when I get them re-purposed so I don’t just forget what’s in there. The grooming tools can go into a vinyl pouch that once housed something else, who knows what, and I may store those in the patio gardening cabinet outside.

    One handy minimalist makeup product if you haven’t tried it: Boomstick — one transparent ‘berry’ color you can swipe on your eyes/brow-bone, cheeks and lips and be done with it. Fast, easy and simple.

  30. I’ll spare you the ‘before’ images. You know how things always look worse before they look better? That’s where that room is at right now, though it’s not as bad as it was a few days ago. I tossed a lot of old paperwork, filed what I was keeping. Desk drawers were emptied and so now can hold things I actually will be using working in that room.

    This week, meanwhile, is the big purge event at work as we get ready to move out of our leased space of the last 10 years. I’d already dumped a whole lot of things when we were going through those numerous waves of layoffs 1-2 years ago. All my desk drawers were emptied out (and I’ve never re-populated them). Stuff on top of my desk can probably mostly be tossed now as well, it’s paperwork mostly from ongoing stories. We’re told we’ll have “no” storage at our new bare-bones work spaces. Good thing so much now is kept electronically, but i’ll still miss my old-style, paper story files.

  31. DJ, I remember being in my first real office job while attending college at Georgia State. I was a cooperative education student working a quarter and then doing a school quarter. I had an on-going part-time job, too, as a sales clerk in a downtown department store. As I got to know people better in the office job (tax auditor with IRS) I found myself amazed at how many various troubles and problems the ‘adults’ I was working around had It was an eyeopener.My main concern was making good grades and what would I have for dinner. My goodness gracious, I was naive

  39. On makeup: The other day in the staff room, the TV was playing some show in which nurses got a makeover. The staff nurses who were on break scoffed at the idea, saying no one looks good after a twelve hour shift. There are a lot of rules about what one can wear: shoes must be closed toe to avoid injury around all the heavy equipment that rolls; painted & artificial fingernails harbor bacteria; hair must be off the collar, since it too is a sanitation hazard; if you are entering a sterile surgical area, hair must be covered & a mask worn; jewelry is also against code in surgical areas, as it has been known to get lost inside patients. Then there are the scrubs uniforms, and in surgical areas, the surgical greens, which are unisex uniforms laundered by the hospital until they become rags. Labour and delivery units have a surgical area for Cesarean sections and emergency surgeries for postpartum hemorrhage, so everyone working on the unit wears the same thing, whether surgeon, anesthetist, midwife, nurse, or cleaning attendant because they go in and out of the surgical area every day.

    Five weeks to go and I have to fit in nearly 200 hours of clinical plus written assignments. In four days, I have done three shifts, with one more before I get a couple of days to finish the paper that is due before the end of next week.

    Just teasing. I remember in the old days when you could only see the mountains from LA if the wind was blowing from the West. Poor San Bernadino got all the smog on those days. But LA has done a good job of cleaning up the air.

    I saw someone the other day thought they were having sciatica pains. Check out the piriformis stretches–that’s what has helped me, finally, to get through this.

    In my case, now the piriformis is finally less tight, I’ve discovered I’ve also got some serious and non-resolving hip pain. I’ll see the doctor this week; it’s hard to sleep with the aching hip. (Just one more excuse).

    My husband has decided to retire in 30 months. If I’ve got serious hip issues, I need to start dealing with them now while he’s still got good health insurance 😦

    I am so challenged by that. Every time I make plans, nothing goes right. I know it is wise to make plans and then be flexible, but it seems a long, long time since I made any plans that worked out. I am thinking that homeschooling was the last big thing I did that really worked out. If you have any thoughts about planning and especially in regards to that Bible verse, could you share with me? I sometimes feel like I am in a long term identity crisis.

Oh but the beauty of our surroundings is breathtaking this morning! It was -4 this morning when I awakened….it is now 2 above…that would be considered a heat wave for Kare 🌞
    Janice I tend to adapt to last minute change. My thinking is the Lord had different plans for me. There are those moments of frustration when I desired to accomplish a certain task and fell short due to circumstances though. That would be my human struggle 😊

  49. Thanks michelle, that was me (sciatica) — I’ve already tried one exercise I saw online the other day which seemed to help. I think it’s easing up some and late yesterday I actually thought it was gone, but now this morning I feel a twinge of it again. It’s the worst when I’ve been sitting for a long time (this happens at work) and then get up. Ouch.

    My desk and computer table the office/den are cleared off and polished. It really is a nice desk. 🙂 And the big, padded swivel office chair I bought some years ago at Staples will be so much more comfortable for working from home than the antique dining room chairs.

    Nancyjill, I tried the wax block on the one center drawer that was sticking and it’s better but still not ‘gliding’ open and closed. I’ll keep using it. All the other drawers are functioning fine.

    I need to eventually be able to hook my laptop up to the much larger monitor on the old desk top computer in there to work more comfortably, vision-wise — former photo editor told me to take pictures of the ports and he’d tell me what wire I need to use to connect the two.

    Another thing I’d like to get is a standing desk adaptor that sits on top of the computer table and manually raises up so you can stand instead of sit for a while and still work. We have them at work and they do really help (when I remember to use mine).

  50. I drove by the new office yesterday I’ll be working out of in a couple weeks, at least for some of the time.

    Can’t find a good photo of it offhand, but this pic linked below was taken from the building’s terrace — we’re on the 4th floor, not very high, but we do have some kind of view of the boulevard shown here.

    This will be a much closer commute for me, just over two bridges and I’m pretty much there.

  52. Donna, I have been keeping a watch on the standing desks. They seem overly priced now since they are the “new thing.” I will be glad to hear what you get. I look at them each time I visit Office Depot. Sam’s sells some office furniture but I have not seen them there yet. I have also wondered if there is some other piece of furniture that could be repurposed as a standing desk.

  54. Dj where do you park in such an area? That’s the one thing I dislike about downtown…parking and parking garages. The closest town for us is Monument…no parking meters. You just find a parking spot along the road and walk down the sidewalk to your destination. The beauty of a smallish town….

  55. I thought today’s photo was a fun catch–two in one, pileated on the ground and red-bellied on the tree. Cardinals were arguing over turf; two were on on one side of the trail chasing each other, with another two on the other side doing likewise–I could see four at one time! I was trying to get photos (which is almost impossible, and I didn’t manage), and I turned around to continue walking, and these two were in place not all that far from me. Had I continued walking, I would have flushed both, so I was glad I’d been paused.

    I’ve seen pileated woodpeckers on the ground before–their main food source is carpenter ants, and sometimes they get them from fallen wood–but it’s actually rather rare to see a red-bellied so low on a tree, so it was sweet to get them both in the same frame. Within five minutes of seeing this pair, I also saw a downy or hairy, so it was definitely my “10:00 is the best hour for woodpeckers” morning. I saw multiple sightings of the pileated and her mate, and heard them other times between seeing them. But by 11:00, I stopped seeing or hearing them and didn’t see any more woodpeckers in the next hour I walked. It doesn’t always work that way; they may be active at other times, or inactive in the 10:00 hour, but it’s common enough that if I particularly want to see woodpeckers, I’ll choose that time on purpose. On that day I simply got a late start and that is when I happened to go out. (Pileated woodpeckers have a large enough territory that the chance of seeing them on the same spot you’ve seen them before is fairly slim, but if you know the sound of their laughter, and their drumming on trees, and what they look like in flight, your chance of seeing them increases quite a bit. Going out in March or October–when trees are leafless but the birds seem more active–also increases the chances of seeing them. I have now seen them dozens of times, but probably 90% of my sightings are a six-week period in the spring, late February through March, and in October.)

    But right now it is snowing hard, and just under freezing, so I am going out to see if any bird is defying the weather to sing about spring. It’s late enough into the birds’ spring that I just might find such a thing. I wasn’t even planning to get outside today (other than to go to church), but the snow changed my mind.

  58. Here is the desk Art uses at home. I bought it with the thought that Miss Bosley might perch on the upper shelf. I am wondering if the upper shelf could hold a PC and become a very small writing station that could be used from the backside. It would give up and down exercise. It is against a wall so I can’t check it out very well here. I may need to look in store again.

  59. Hello All. I have been buried under getting the CE’s down. I am now halfway through. I could handle Agent Financials and Contract Management because that is what I deal with on a daily basis. Next up is Leading the Field (managing time, goal setting, listing management, and a few others that I personally am not good at doing or bore me to tears -listing management). Then there will be Managing the Real Estate Office. I also don’t do this on a daily basis because of the way KW is set up. I have never been in charge of or managed the escrow accounts and I figure if there is ever a complaint against one of my agents, I can look up the response time then and hire an attorney if needed. All brain-numbing activities in my opinion.

    Oh, well. Luckily I was able to clear my schedule Monday and Tuesday and can spend a day on each one and hopefully knock it all out. I can’t believe I let this creep up on me. I should have started this the minute I got my Florida Broker’s License.
    The good news is that I have heard Alabama will accept Florida’s CE’s so I may be covered for license renewal in Alabama for 2020, but I will definitely call to make sure this is so.

  60. You, Kim, and Roscuro are knocking out those hours! Good for y’all. That takes such focus and determination. My brother is good at doing things like that because over the years he always had to study and pass exams on the new pharmaceuticals he would be selling. He has done great on studying for the tax preparer’s tests, too. But because of lack of skill in keyboarding, and no desire to learn it, he is slow.

    We are having storms. I am in a downstairs closet. And I hear drips somewhere in the house. I think I will just live in the closet. Miss Bosley is happy in my lap wherever I am.

  61. It’s sunny here this afternoon but it was very gray and misting/showering on the drive to church this morning. We get a break for a day+ after this and then another system moves in late on Tuesday. I will never be tired of rain.

    Hearing drips in the house, from either below or above, is one of my nightmares.

    OK, back to the office/den cleanout/cleanup for me this afternoon. I really would like to finish this by the time the weekend is over.

  62. Janice are you cleaning out the closet or are you in there to keep safe? How well I recall running to the basement as a child growing up in Ohio. The clouds grew dark, winds howled and Mom gathered us up and took us downstairs. When we thought she was overreacting she said we had no clue….her mother made her take bobby pins out of her hair just in case lightening might strike her in the head!! 😂 (and all the while we were in the basement during the storm, Dad was either sitting on the porch taking in the wonder of it all or working out in his hobby shop on TV’s and radios…drove her crazy!)

  64. My standing desk is the laptop on top of the US Navy, History of the Civil War and a very thick atlas on my kitchen island. It works–and actually is what I use when the sciatica/hip/piriformis is screaming at me.

  65. Stacked books will probably be my most practical option at home, i think.

    Our work stand-up desks are contraptions mounted to the top of a regular desk (and they’ll go with us to the new place). Our sister paper, the Orange County Register, has actual magical desks that raise up and lower with the push of a button. Like all of us, they’ve lost large numbers of staff (we only acquired them 2 years ago or so but we’ve made quick work of their staffing numbers). We were hoping some of those now-empty desks could make their way to the rest of us but I guess not. Sounds like our new spare digs won’t even have room for something like that anyway.

  66. Home office/den is coming along. I did something I’d done before that works well — all the ‘little’ things (pen holders, staplers, etc.) that I didn’t know what to do with and were in the way (but most likely will be still useful to re-populate the desktop/room), I put in a large plastic tote on the patio.

    For now.

    So it’s all out of the way helping me make more progress without those distractions — I’ll bring some of the pieces back in when I figure out the desktop space a little better and will probably also give some of it away.

  69. Another strong band of snow came through our area. We have another 3 or 4 inches of snow (they predicted .01 inch…) the roads are a mess. I do have an appt at 8:30am to see our new doctor. I hope she makes it in because I plan to be there to meet her. Then I need to head into the Springs to pick up my new corrected glasses. All the days I have no appts….sunny and dry…yep…my dumb luck! 😂 Area schools have already called a 2 hours delay….the temps are to be below 0 in the AM….

  72. They kept changing how much snow we were supposed to get, but I think we ended up with two or three inches, which isn’t bad. And they revised the forecasts for the week to be a bit warmer–lows in double digits and not single, and one fewer day of the cold stuff. I can live with that. My eye is on spring.

  73. We are expecting six to eight inches of snow tonight. It has already been announced that schools in our town are closed tomorrow.

    As for polishing fingernails and toenails, mine are all currently polished. I usually polish my fingernails for church, then take it off a few days later. My toenails are polished because Nightingale gave me a pedicure last week. She has a bunch of products for doing that sort of thing, including one of those battery-operated foot “sanders”. (Not sure what it’s called, but it “sands” off the dry skin and rough patches.) My feet felt so different – and really good – when she was done!

    I have heard that keeping nail polish on the nails actually makes them weaker, so that it is good to take polish off after a couple days and let the nails get more oxygen (or something).

  74. 14 people died from tornado in southwest Georgia. It was really, really bad but only rain here. I stayed in the closet which is under a stairwell. I had put a chair in there so Miss Bosley got in my lap. I had calls from Karen anout the weather and then a call from my friend from church. We had a lot to catch up on since I have not been there lately. I thought about cleaning out the closet for a few moments and might have except for having the dozing cat in the lap and the talking ladies on the phone.

    Art just got home from work.

    We had an inch of rain this afternoon.

  75. I have a standing laptop desk that I use on and off each day. My rear end and a hip will hurt if I sit too much, especially at the end of the day. It would be nice to end each evening sitting down to read, but I need to be standing at least the last hour (I usually stand the last two hours) or else lying down when I go to bed will be uncomfortable with my rear end and hip (usually the right one, but sometimes both) already sore. I’m used to it, though.

    I usually have some music on, and “dance” as I listen and read.

  77. Now the forecast for us is for seven to ten inches of snow. We’ll see in the morning how accurate that is.

  78. We’re done with the snow. It ended up an inch or two. Now we have the cold, near zero in the morning with wind chills down around -20.
