  1. Interesting….

    http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2018/09/28/gregg-jarrett-in-kavanaugh-battle-are-fords-lawyers-representing-her-or-democrats.html

“Professor Christine Blasey Ford – who has accused Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her some 36 years ago – may well have been betrayed and victimized by her own attorneys, who are Democratic activists with a record of fierce opposition to President Trump.

As a result, the attorneys ostensibly representing Ford may have breached their client’s trust and violated their ethical responsibility to act in her best interests. They may instead be motivated primarily by a desire to block President Trump’s appointment of a conservative justice to the nation’s highest court. An investigation of their conduct is warranted to determine if this is the case. ”

    ———————

“As Fox News reported this week, Ford’s legal team is composed of Democratic lawyers, donors and operatives.

Attorney Debra S. Katz has been a vocal protester at anti-Trump rallies and was quoted as saying: “We are going to resist. We will not be silenced.” Her partner in a Washington law firm, Lisa J. Banks, is also active in Democratic politics.

And last weekend attorney Michael Bromwich joined Katz and Banks on Ford’s legal team. He represents disgraced former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, who was fired after clashing with the Trump administration over the FBI’s handling of the Hillary Clinton and Russia investigations.

Are these the kind of attorneys who are interested in protecting their client’s best interests or are they more interested in advancing their own partisan anti-Trump agenda? “

    https://www.oregonlive.com/silicon-forest/index.ssf/2018/09/julie_swetnick_one_of_kavanaug.html

“Swetnick worked at Portland-based Webtrends for a few months in 2000, according to a civil suit the Portland company filed against her late that year. The company said she was hired as a professional services engineer to work off-site. It’s not clear whether she ever worked in Webtrends’ Portland office.

“In the suit, Webtrends alleged Swetnick claimed to have graduated from Johns Hopkins University but the company said it subsequently learned the school had no record of her attendance. Webtrends said she also “falsely described her work experience” at a prior employer.

The suit also alleges Swetnick “engaged in unwelcome, sexually offensive conduct” while at Webtrends and “made false and retaliatory allegations that other co-workers had engaged in inappropriate conduct toward her.”

The suit alleges Swetnick “engaged in unwelcome sexual innuendo and inappropriate conduct” directed at two male employees during a business lunch, with Webtrends customers present. Swetnick claimed two other employees had sexually harassed her, according to the suit.

Webtrends’ suit said it determined Swetnick had engaged in misconduct but could not find evidence to support her allegations against her colleagues. Later, the company alleged, Swetnick took medical leave and simultaneously claimed unemployment benefits in the District of Columbia.”

  4. More fake news from the NY Times.

    https://twitchy.com/gregp-3534/2018/09/28/wow-it-turns-out-the-american-bar-association-story-on-brett-kavanaugh-was-fake-news/

“Remember this big BOMBSHELL yesterday that said the American Bar Association called for a delay in a vote on SCOTUS nominee Brett Kavanaugh? From the New York Times:

The A.B.A. request was made on Thursday evening in a letter from the association’s president, Robert M. Carlson, to the Senate Judiciary Committee’s chairman, Charles E. Grassley, an Iowa Republican, and Senator Dianne Feinstein of California, the senior Democrat on the panel.

The bar association urged that senators vote on Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination “only after an appropriate background check into the allegations made by Professor Blasey and others is completed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” the letter said.

The call for a pause is significant not just because of the bar association’s clout in the legal community, but because an A.B.A. committee had said unanimously a month ago that Judge Kavanaugh was “well qualified” for the Supreme Court, its highest possible designation.

Senate Dems jumped all over it:

But, surprise! It was Fake News.

The Senate Judiciary Committee released this letter on Friday from the ABA stating that Robert Carlson, the President of the American Bar Association who wrote the letter, didn’t get the it approved by the committee that actually votes on this sort of thing and that the ABA’s rating of Judge Kavanaugh “is not affected”:

  5. Weak.

And a traitorous coward too afraid to stand up for the party and ideals he claims to support..

    https://legalinsurrection.com/2018/09/weak-republicans-deprived-us-of-a-victory-even-if-kavanaugh-eventually-is-confirmed/#more-261219

“Jeff Flake is getting the blame for the further delay in the Senate confirmation floor vote for Brett Kavanaugh.

After announcing he would vote in favor of Kavanaugh at the Judiciary Committee, without any conditions, Flake was pulled aside in the Senate hearing anteroom and aggressively lobbied by Democrats. It was an unusual scene, with Chuck Grassley and other Republican Senators waiting for Flake to emerge so that a vote could be taken.

What happened out of sight was that Democrats prevailed on Flake to condition his vote on a supplemental FBI background investigation, to take up to a week.”

    ———————–

“It’s supposed to be limited to a week, but Ford’s lawyers already have announced they do not accept that limitation.

For the Democrats, they may have snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. After Kavanaugh’s testimony yesterday, Conservatives/Republicans/Deplorables were stoked. Trump was stoked. Victory over the devious, disingenuous, dishonest and disgusting Democrats who sought to destroy Kavanaugh was at hand.

Anger over the War on Kavanaugh was to bring out a previously sleepy electorate, and possibly save Republican control of both houses of Congress.

The Judiciary Committee vote this morning was to launch what amounted to a multi-day victory party, with a series of Senate floor votes starting Saturday and ending with confirmation on Tuesday. While it would not be as amazing as election night 2016, it would have been been sweet revenge, in which each of us who has received some small measure of the abuse directed at Kavanaugh would be triumphant.

But it was taken away by Flake’s announcement. Flake earlier in the morning had been cornered in an elevator by activists screaming at him. As a Democrat operative noted on Twitter:

“Jeff Flake getting cornered in an elevator with his tail between his legs was one of the BIGGEST reasons he maneuvered for the FBI investigation into Kavanaugh. Just days ago, pundits were saying we shouldn’t confront politicians…”

Flake’s capitulation will embolden further confrontations against Republicans. Ian Millhiser, “Justice Editor” for leftist Think Progress, saw the connection, tweeting:

“Tell me again why we shouldn’t confront Republicans where they eat, where they sleep, and where they work until they stop being complicit in the destruction of our democracy.””
    —————–

I’ll be so happy when this fraud no longer sits in the Senate.

  7. Unfortunately, the Democrats will not be happy with giving this one more week for an “FBI investigation.” It’s almost assuredly not going to discover anything new, although it will give more time for more charges to come forth. At the end of the week, there will be demands for more time and more investigations. If that happens, it’s pretty much over for Kavanaugh. And even if the vote is held then (which is a necessity or the GOP might as well start over with a new nominee) and he’s approved, the Democrats will still say it was all “rushed” and Kavanaugh is surely guilty.

So while it sounds reasonable to do more investigation after the uproar surrounding Thursday’s conflicting testimony, it’s probably not going to bring any more clarity with regard to what happened at a teen party nearly 40 years ago.

The extra week of investigation is a compromise that really satisfies neither side in this, it mostly prolongs the country’s misery. 😦

  8. Lots of data here, but Americans’ views on trade are slowly shifting in the right direction. Even as Trump’s outrageous sexual assault confession made it socially unacceptable to be a sexual predator, his uneducated rantings on trade combined with his tariffs are making it intellectually unacceptable to be a protectionist.

Virginia Rep. Bob Goodlatte, the Judiciary panel’s chairman, announced the subpoena on Twitter.

    ——

“On Thursday, Simpson’s attorney, Josh Levy, told Goodlatte and South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy, the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, that Simpson would not appear for an interview, as the committees had requested last week.

“Part and parcel of this concerted effort by the President’s congressional allies has been a campaign of retaliation against the government’s whistleblowers, including our client Mr. Simpson, for their willingness to cooperate with US law enforcement and for their exercise of their constitutional rights to free speech and political activity as American citizens,” Levy wrote.”

“USA Today got slammed on social media after publishing an “evil” article saying Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh should stay away from coaching girls’ basketball because of sexual assault allegations.

  12. Here are a few thoughts:
    1. The Dems and the liberals in the media have handled the Kavanaugh matter very dishonestly.
    2. Had I been Flake, I would simply have voted to confirm without a request for an FBI investigation.
    3. That said, there is no certainty that Kavanaugh could have obtained 50 votes if the final vote had been yesterday.
    4. In a week, we can see what the FBI finds.
    A. If it is largely exculpatory, McConnell can call for a vote and get his 50 votes.
    B. If the FBI finds evidence to support Ford’s charges, Trump can pull the nomination and nominate Amy Coney Barrett or someone else more likely to reverse Roe than Kavanaugh.
    5. McConnell can ram the vote through before the new Senate is seated in January. He held Scalia’s seat open for almost a year to open the door for Gorsuch. He is not consistently conservative, but he is effective.
    6. This week of FBI investigation will make it more difficult for the Dems to campaign on this issue. In fact I think the Kavanaugh matter has helped the Rs. The Dems and the press have behaved badly and for once Trump has been relatively rational and dignified.

“Someone leaked Christine Blasey Ford’s letter to Dianne Feinstein to the media, setting off the current firestorm surrounding Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation.

Kavanaugh has denied the accusation of assault set forth in the letter, and vigorously defended himself at the hearings. Each of the people Ford has identified as being present during the party in question has denied being at such party.

During the hearings, however, the question arose as to who leaked the letter to the media.

It wasn’t Republicans, because only Feinstein’s office, the office of a Democrat congresswoman, and Ford’s Democrat lawyers had the letter.”

  17. This was predicted here before Trump took office. People and countries can “bribe” the infantile and insecure Trump with flattery. Omarosa kept her job in the White House while doing nothing, sowing discord and secretly taping everyone because “she always said nice things” about Trump. Kim has caused all US joint military exercises in North Asia to be suspended because he flattered and then “wrote beautiful letters” to our Child President.

    https://www.reuters.com/article/us-northkorea-usa-trump/we-fell-in-love-trump-swoons-over-letters-from-north-koreas-kim-idUSKCN1MA03Q

Trump told his West Virginia cultists that he and Kim “fell in love”. The West Virginia cultists laughed. Then Trump said, “No really. He sent me beautiful letters.” Some of the Zombie Trumpkins then applauded. If Obama had done this, half of Republicans would have been trying to impeach him for treason and the other half would have been seeking a medical exam so he could have been declared insane and removed under the 25th Amendment. Now with all Trump’s other idiocy, this goes virtually unnoticed.

Just note: Within a week, Trump has become the literal laughingstock of the entire world at the UN and his own cultists in West Virginia, a state he won by over 40 points.

    https://legalinsurrection.com/2018/09/trump-completes-first-trade-deal-with-new-agreement-with-south-korea/

“Fresh off his visit to North Korea and ahead of the United Nations General Assembly meeting, South Korean President Moon Jae-in signed a free-trade agreement with the United States, marking the first time the President Donald Trump has finalized a major trade deal since entering office.

The signing ceremony in New York on Monday represented key progress for proponents of free trade between the partners, as Trump last year reportedly planned to withdraw from the pact, which came into effect in 2012. Trump during his election campaign called the original agreement a “jobs killer” and complained its terms had contributed to America’s growing trade deficit.

As part of his push to rebalance global trade in America’s favor, the president is also negotiating changes to the North American Free Trade Agreement and is pressuring China to lower its barriers to American products. Nafta negotiations are ongoing, while there are few signs of progress with Beijing.

Trade analysts say changes to the South Korea agreement were largely cosmetic, as the president limited the scope of renegotiations by declining to invoke U.S. trade law that would have required congressional approval of the final deal.

The terms of the new pact included modifications to tariffs and automotive quotas.

Trump called the agreement a “historic milestone” although the changes agreed upon — doubling the number of U.S. automobiles that can be sold in South Korea and keeping a tariff on South Korean steel in place through 2041 — were largely cosmetic, given that a broader renegotiation would have required approval from Congress.

“This agreement will reduce bureaucracy and increase prosperity in both of our countries,” Trump said.””

  19. This is an honest question: Do you think Judge Kavanaugh really did not know the true definitions of “boof” and “Devil’s Triangle” or was he committing perjury when he gave his definitions?

(As I said the other day, if he did indeed know the true definitions, he was probably just an immature teenager trying to sound more experienced and cool.)

  20. By chipping away at the alternative which offends their fine sensibilities, people like Ricky and Flake (and many others) will eventually hand the country over to the Marxist wing of the Democrat party. For awhile I considered that very disturbing, but I have come to a place of deep peace with it now. As noxious as it is, most likely Marxism will not be all bad all the time for everyone….maybe. And eventually, like Capitalism, it will fall under the weight of its own intrinsic errors and arrogance, for God has not established these ideologies; they are the vain imaginings of man. For Christians in particular, Marxism may offer a chance to truly suffer for the faith if we manage to avoid becoming complicit in the rebellion that is sure to follow.

  22. I really did not think that even The Cult would try to defend Trump’s statement that he and Kim “fell in love” after Kim sent him flattering letters.

However, I should have known better. Trumpism is truly a personality cult not a political movement or a set of principles or beliefs.

There is literally nothing that Trump can say or do that the Trumpkins will not defend or excuse. It is sort of sad, but sort of funny.

This is a very possible preview of The Mueller Report which may “clear” Trump by finding that he moronically framed himself but is innocent of treason. It is going to be hilarious to watch the Dems attack the “Republican” Mueller while Trump decrees that all of The Cult must praise Mueller in terms previously reserved for Kim of North Korea.

  24. Debra – It may be wrong, but what I have read has said that the terms were understood the same way in the 80s as they are now.

I am willing to agree that they may not have had the same meaning, but this sticks out to me (if I am wrong on the wording of this quote, please correct me): He wrote to his friend, “Have you boofed?” But it seems to me that if he really was referring to “farting” (I hate that word), he would have written, “Did you boof?” (“Have you farted” would make no sense. Everyone does.)

Please don’t read anything into my various questions and comments about where I stand on the matter. I have also made comments to those who are against Kavanaugh which cause them to think I am on his side. Playing “devil’s advocate” (wish there was another term for that), trying to get each side to consider some pertinent points from the other side, gets me assumed to be obviously on the “other side”. But I think we need to consider perspectives that make us uncomfortable, that we would rather not see.

Although right now, I am not taking a side publicly (trying to avoid transgressing the 9th commandment), my tendency would be to believe Judge Kavanaugh.

  25. A bit much but not evil. Its standard practise that anyone accused of a sexual crime not have contact with children as a coach, teacher, etc. Given the nature of the claims, I don’t think this is necessary but I don’t think I would like my 20 year old daughter to hang out with Kavanugh when he’s drunk. But he’s good to coach girl’s basketball, in my opinion. However, if I faced similar accusations I would be suspended with pay and told not to coach girl’s volleyball.

As I’ve said before, its not the accusations that should dismiss him but his behaviour since. He lies even when its not necessary — never blacked out? devil’s triangle? Trump conducted an extensive search? His temperament is not judicial. He yells, belittles, interrupts and is emotionally unstable. He’s too partisan much more than Gorsuch or Garland. And he has a huge sense of entitlement.

    Compare his behaviour to Garland.
