It’s tempting to applaud this move, but we should be wary. While Mr. Jones’s rhetoric is certainly repugnant, mounting pressure from the political left to censor hateful speech may have unintended consequences, especially for people of color.
That’s because “hate” is a dangerously elastic label, one that has long been used in America to demonize unpopular expression. If we become overzealous in our efforts to limit so-called hate speech, we run the risk of setting a trap for the very people we’re trying to defend.”

Holy Jim Volunteer Fire Department Chief Mike Milligan, 71, says he’s known the arson suspect, Forrest Gordon Clark, for decades and has long warned that he posed a danger to the community.
“I’ve been trying for years to get someone to pay attention and nobody has really had the opportunity to do that until now,” he said.
Milligan said he was so wary of Clark that he avoided altogether going to the area of the remote Orange County canyon where the 51-year-old Clark lives. Nonetheless, Clark came to his home two weeks ago to return items he said he had “borrowed” from the fire department, he said.
“I said, ‘I want nothing to do with you, Forrest. Just go,’ ” Milligan said. “He was being gentlemanly in the beginning, and turned and then swore at me, and turned and left and was quoting the Bible. Later, he came back and told me what a jerk I was and everyone was after him.”
The next morning, Milligan said, he got a mysterious text from an unknown number: “911 call sheriff.” Milligan called back and though the reception was poor in the canyon, he recognized Clark’s voice, he said. Later came an expletive-laden text that ended with the ominous warning: “The place is going to burn just like you planned.””
“Senate Democrats may be “furious,” as CNN’s Manu Raju reports, but they can’t be surprised. Their demands for documents on Brett Kavanaugh’s time in the George W. Bush White House had already been limited by Senate Judiciary chair Chuck Grassley, who refused to play along with Chuck Schumer’s fishing expedition regarding Kavanaugh’s time as staff secretary. The Bush library has provided some documents from the Supreme Court’s time in the White House counsel’s office, but not before vetting those for executive privilege as well:

Bush’s team has provided the Senate Judiciary Committee with scores of documents from Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s time serving in the White House counsel’s office, but acknowledged that the Bush team ultimately made the decision on which records to disclose for public review.
In a letter obtained by CNN, the Bush representative said that the Bush team made the determination about which documents would not violate privileged communications and are “publicly releasable” to the committee.
The records are expected to be publicly available as soon as Thursday, but they will not include documents from Kavanaugh’s time serving as White House staff secretary from 2003-2006, as Democrats have demanded. Republicans have said such records would not be useful in determining how Kavanaugh would rule as a Supreme Court justice.
The problem, the Bush team explained in their letter to Grassley, is that the National Archives personnel are working at full capacity to review document demands from Kavanaugh’s work in the Bush White House from 2001-3 in their records. They informed Bush Library attorney William Burck that they don’t have anyone available to review the voluminous material Kavanaugh managed from 2003-6.
However, the restriction on documents from the earlier period has Democrats irate. One staffer told CNN that the Bush legal team’s involvement in the process has made the results illegitimate:

“After days of being dressed down by the judge overseeing the Paul Manafort case, federal prosecutors sought Thursday to put their foot down — filing a motion complaining that Judge T.S. Ellis III had unfairly admonished them in front of the jury.
Ellis has memorably and repeatedly criticized Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team during the trial for the former Trump campaign chairman. On Wednesday, Ellis ripped into prosecutors for letting a witness, IRS Agent Michael Welsh, sit in the courtroom before his testimony.
But in a five-page motion filed Thursday, Mueller deputy Andrew Weissmann and other attorneys on the team claimed Ellis had actually granted permission earlier in the trial for the witness to remain in the room during proceedings.
“The court’s reprimand of government counsel suggested to the jury—incorrectly—that the government had acted improperly and in contravention of court rules,” the prosecutors wrote. “This prejudice should be cured.”
Ellis responded by expressing regret in court Thursday.
“This robe doesn’t make me anything other than human,” Ellis said.
Referencing his earlier reprimand, Ellis said Thursday: “Any criticism of counsel should be put aside.”
The truce between the judge and prosecutors, though, did not last long.

“CNN deliberately omitted the words “Muslim extremists” in its coverage of the Muslim extremists who were arrested at a squalid New Mexico compound where police discovered 11 missing children who were starved and abused.
Prosecutors said Siraj Wahhaj and Lucas Morten (who were in charge of the compound) were secretly training the children to commit mass school shootings.
While that news is shocking enough, what’s just as stunning are revelations that CNN deleted a reference to the local sheriff’s statement describing the perpetrators as Muslim extremists.
Taos County Sheriff Jerry Hogrefe stated in a news release: “We had learned the occupants were most likely heavily-armed and considered extremists of the Muslim belief.”
Sheriff Hogrefe reaffirmed that FBI analysts had told him the suspects are apparently “extremists of the Muslim belief.”
The Federalist’s Gabriel Malor, an attorney, said of CNN: “The article originally included the sheriff’s statement that the individuals were “extremists of the Muslim belief…not there anymore.”
Moreover, CNN didn’t even admit in an editor’s note to the story that it had stealth-deleted the “Muslim” reference.”

Donald Trump’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame — destroyed on several occasions by detractors who sometimes wield a pick-ax — mysteriously multiplied over night so that on Thursday morning there were several dozen stars.
The effort comes from a conservative street artist who wishes to remain anonymous, but says he was motivated not only by the destruction of the president’s real star, but also a recent unanimous vote by the West Hollywood City Council to recommend the removal of Trump’s star due to accusations he has mistreated women.
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and Los Angeles City Council haven’t weighed in on the matter, but those who oppose the proposal note that others in Hollywood who have also been accused of mistreating women still have stars on the Walk of Fame, most notably Bill Cosby.
The anonymous artist says he’s not done with his mission to preserve Trump’s star. “Rip up the president’s Walk of Fame star or try to have it removed — like you’re the mayor of West Hollywood or something — and 30 more will pop up,” the artist tells The Hollywood Reporter…..

“Liberal New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman said the news media should work together and saturate the public with negative coverage of President Trump in order to erode his popularity among Republican voters.
Friedman said in an op-ed published Wednesday afternoon that if the media emphasize Trump’s personality instead of news about the strong economy, it may discourage enough GOP voters from continuing to support the president and benefit Democrats.
“Some healthy soul searching is taking place in newsrooms across the country these days over whether the mainstream media should be covering President Trump’s every tweet and rally,” Friedman wrote. “My answer: Absolutely! I made a comment to one of our newer reporters yesterday (he covers crime and we were overhearing an older colleague on a phone interview who seemed to be stepping over the boundaries of being an advocate for a position on a homelessness issue he was writing about) that we all need to leave our personal views at the door of the newsroom when we come to work. He replied (we were texting) “Yes, thank you.” So even younger journalists out there get it, thankfully. Maybe what used to be ‘old school’ journalism is again becoming new school …
Interesting because I think the media actually may do some soul searching through all of this present-day political turmoil. And that would be a good thing.

Firefighters worked through the night and into Friday morning, wrestling with the fast-charging Holy fire – which swelled to an estimated 18,137 charred acres overnight, up from 10,236 acres the night before.
Fire personnel continued to push back on the flames that tried to reach homes in the Lake Elsinore area.
The glow of the orange flames could be seen Friday morning in the hills above Riverside County neighborhoods.

“A Reuters story that dropped last night really takes the prize for manipulative coverage of the Muslim extremists who were abusing the starving 11 children found at the New Mexico compound.
According to the police, the children were being taught how to commit school shootings.
One of the men at the compound who was arrested is Siraj Ibn Wahhaj the son of the controversial Brooklyn imam, Siraj Wahhaj, who was named an unindicted co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. He also testified as a character witness for Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman, the notorious “blind sheikh” who was convicted in 1995 of plotting terror attacks in the U.S.
But in the Reuter’s story which is basically about the imam’s reaction to the situation, they never mention that critical fact about the imam. Nor do they mention that the police have called the compound group Muslim extremists.
In fact, they actually seem to be making an effort to build up the imam, as just the poor beleaguered father/grandfather in the situation.

This Is Like My Childhood Education in the Soviet Union
The year after the Soviet Union fell, I entered fifth grade at State School No. 8 in the Siberian city of Tomsk, where I was born at the beginning of the end of that evil empire. Usually, Soviet children started learning the history of Russia in fifth grade, but my teacher told the class that she had nothing to teach us anymore.
“The old history books are useless now,” I distinctly remember her telling us. “They were full of Communist Party lies.” Just like that, the entire monument of official Soviet history, built upon an ideological foundation of lies and held together by despotism, crashed as soon as the coercive power that had kept it upright for 74 years disappeared in an instant.
Undaunted by the failures of their comrades in the Soviet Union and other socialist hell-holes, left-wing activists are dug in at all stages of the American educational process from preschool to graduate school, where they seek to replicate the Soviet Union’s abuse of its children’s minds with lurid lies.
Even science education is facing a hostile takeover by progressive luddites with scientific degrees who insist, as one biology PhD student did recently, that “to think there are universal truths perpetuates a particular kind of able bodied white cisgender male logic.” The result of all this left-wing obscurantism is a brainwashed Generation Z that inhabits a false reality colored in stylized black and white by leftist dogma—the same false reality that Soviet school and preschool battered into me as a child.
The Teachers’ Administrators Back Them Up
After Bedar complained that he didn’t want to get fired for being a “liberal propagandist,” his fellow history teacher, Ibokette, wrote back: “David, if you get fired for doing exactly what history teachers, and indeed all rational and ethical‐minded adults should indeed be doing, I will be right behind you.”
I wish this would happen, not because I want them punished, but because I think the way they teach history is a form of child abuse. But Bedar and Ibokette’s superiors, all the way up the ladder, are fully on board with this abuse. Bedar’s direct supervisor, Newton North history department chair Jonathan Bassett, replied to his revolt against reason with this: “David: Your ‘essay’ is very good, and raises a lot of the questions that we are all dealing with. . . . We are in unprecedented times, and we are all struggling to do good.”
The Left is abusing American high school education in its struggle—not to do good, but to gain and retain political power. The ongoing trend of growing political intolerance and ideological bigotry among the newest American adults will continue, and nothing good will come of it. In the Soviet Union, I’ve seen what young people could be turned into, what I myself could be turned into. Trust me, America hasn’t seen anything yet.”

The Federalist’s Gabriel Malor, an attorney, said of CNN: “The article originally included the sheriff’s statement that the individuals were “extremists of the Muslim belief…not there anymore.”
Moreover, CNN didn’t even admit in an editor’s note to the story that it had stealth-deleted the “Muslim” reference.”

In fairness, that NYT piece is prominently labeled “Opinion.” It’s not meant to be a neutral news story.
Still, some good points and I’m glad to see that the whole “hate speech” category is getting some critical assessment from all sides.

Friedman said in an op-ed published Wednesday afternoon that if the media emphasize Trump’s personality instead of news about the strong economy, it may discourage enough GOP voters from continuing to support the president and benefit Democrats.
“Some healthy soul searching is taking place in newsrooms across the country these days over whether the mainstream media should be covering President Trump’s every tweet and rally,” Friedman wrote. “My answer: Absolutely! It’s the right thing for us to do professionally, and, as last night’s election results indicated, it’s the right thing to do politically if you want to see a check on Donald Trump’s power.”

I made a comment to one of our newer reporters yesterday (he covers crime and we were overhearing an older colleague on a phone interview who seemed to be stepping over the boundaries of being an advocate for a position on a homelessness issue he was writing about) that we all need to leave our personal views at the door of the newsroom when we come to work. He replied (we were texting) “Yes, thank you.” So even younger journalists out there get it, thankfully. Maybe what used to be ‘old school’ journalism is again becoming new school …
Interesting because I think the media actually may do some soul searching through all of this present-day political turmoil. And that would be a good thing.

Firefighters worked through the night and into Friday morning, wrestling with the fast-charging Holy fire – which swelled to an estimated 18,137 charred acres overnight, up from 10,236 acres the night before.
Fire personnel continued to push back on the flames that tried to reach homes in the Lake Elsinore area.
The glow of the orange flames could be seen Friday morning in the hills above Riverside County neighborhoods.

This classic article by Dan Jenkins gives you a good feel of what it was like to grow up in urban Texas in the early 60s. It is hard to overstate the importance of football. That ’63 Texas team won the national championship, defeating Navy and Roger Staubach in the Cotton Bowl. My friend Mike Bourland was a walk/on turned captain of the Baylor team which lost only once and came very close to beating Texas. Now in his late 70s Mike is still one of the top two high-end estate planning attorneys in Fort Worth and has not slowed down one bit.

“A Reuters story that dropped last night really takes the prize for manipulative coverage of the Muslim extremists who were abusing the starving 11 children found at the New Mexico compound.
According to the police, the children were being taught how to commit school shootings.
One of the men at the compound who was arrested is Siraj Ibn Wahhaj the son of the controversial Brooklyn imam, Siraj Wahhaj, who was named an unindicted co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. He also testified as a character witness for Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman, the notorious “blind sheikh” who was convicted in 1995 of plotting terror attacks in the U.S.
But in the Reuter’s story which is basically about the imam’s reaction to the situation, they never mention that critical fact about the imam. Nor do they mention that the police have called the compound group Muslim extremists.
In fact, they actually seem to be making an effort to build up the imam, as just the poor beleaguered father/grandfather in the situation.

A prominent New York City Muslim cleric said on Thursday that he was baffled by events leading to his grandson’s presumed death and the arrest of his son and four other adult relatives on charges of abusing children at a compound in New Mexico.

This Is Like My Childhood Education in the Soviet Union
The year after the Soviet Union fell, I entered fifth grade at State School No. 8 in the Siberian city of Tomsk, where I was born at the beginning of the end of that evil empire. Usually, Soviet children started learning the history of Russia in fifth grade, but my teacher told the class that she had nothing to teach us anymore.
“The old history books are useless now,” I distinctly remember her telling us. “They were full of Communist Party lies.” Just like that, the entire monument of official Soviet history, built upon an ideological foundation of lies and held together by despotism, crashed as soon as the coercive power that had kept it upright for 74 years disappeared in an instant.
Undaunted by the failures of their comrades in the Soviet Union and other socialist hell-holes, left-wing activists are dug in at all stages of the American educational process from preschool to graduate school, where they seek to replicate the Soviet Union’s abuse of its children’s minds with lurid lies.
Even science education is facing a hostile takeover by progressive luddites with scientific degrees who insist, as one biology PhD student did recently, that “to think there are universal truths perpetuates a particular kind of able bodied white cisgender male logic.” The result of all this left-wing obscurantism is a brainwashed Generation Z that inhabits a false reality colored in stylized black and white by leftist dogma—the same false reality that Soviet school and preschool battered into me as a child.
The Teachers’ Administrators Back Them Up
After Bedar complained that he didn’t want to get fired for being a “liberal propagandist,” his fellow history teacher, Ibokette, wrote back: “David, if you get fired for doing exactly what history teachers, and indeed all rational and ethical‐minded adults should indeed be doing, I will be right behind you.”
I wish this would happen, not because I want them punished, but because I think the way they teach history is a form of child abuse. But Bedar and Ibokette’s superiors, all the way up the ladder, are fully on board with this abuse. Bedar’s direct supervisor, Newton North history department chair Jonathan Bassett, replied to his revolt against reason with this: “David: Your ‘essay’ is very good, and raises a lot of the questions that we are all dealing with. . . . We are in unprecedented times, and we are all struggling to do good.”
The Left is abusing American high school education in its struggle—not to do good, but to gain and retain political power. The ongoing trend of growing political intolerance and ideological bigotry among the newest American adults will continue, and nothing good will come of it. In the Soviet Union, I’ve seen what young people could be turned into, what I myself could be turned into. Trust me, America hasn’t seen anything yet.”

The NYPD’s investigation of certain individuals associated with Plaintiff Masjid At Taqwa was based upon information about their lengthy history of suspected criminal activity, some of it terroristic in nature. This information includes but is not limited to: illegal weapons trafficking by members of the mosque’s security team and the mosque caretaker both within the mosque and at the store adjacent; illegal weapons trafficking by certain attendees of the mosque; allegations that the mosque ran a “gun club”; and allegations that the assistant Imam had earmarked portions of over $200,000 raised in the mosque to a number of US Government designated terrorist organizations.
Members of the mosque’s security team have instructed individuals on how to disarm police officers and have led martial arts classes involving individuals convicted on terrorism charges. Since at least 2003, Masjid At Taqwa members have participated in and sponsored paintball exercises and survival training outside New York City, activities which have been carried out for training purposes by violent extremists in multiple terrorism cases in the United States and abroad-such as the “Virginia Jihad” case, the Fort Dix plot, the 7/7 attacks in London, and the UK fertilizer bomb plot (“Operation Awakening”).
