“A number of news stories have covered a new study out today from The Thomson Reuters Foundation: did you know the United States is one of the ten most dangerous countries in the world to be a woman?
Truly, this survey is an indictment. But not of the United States, of the “experts” who responded to it.
The actual methodology is something of a joke. Rather than comparing statistics on sexual violence, contrasting government policy, or anything that would give us concrete, objective measurement to judge one country against another, Thomson Reuters Foundation polled 548 women’s rights experts across the globe and asked them their opinion on the most dangerous countries.
The experts weren’t completely crazy. The United States didn’t make the top ten lists when asked about women’s access to healthcare, discrimination, human trafficking, or dangerous cultural or religious practices. But the reason it ranked in the aggregate top ten was because the women’s right experts inexplicably ranked the United States as the third worst country in the world for Sexual Violence and the sixth worst for Non-Sexual Violence.
Per the geniuses they consulted, the United States is tied with Syria when it comes to sexual violence against woman, and trails only India and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The United States is apparently worse at combating sexual violence than the Republic of the Congo, South Africa, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Mexico, Nigeria, Egypt, and Somalia.”

“Justice Anthony Kennedy’s retirement from the Supreme Court is going to have immediate political consequences by creating a headache for red state Senate Democrats seeking reelection.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said shortly following the retirement that he would hold a vote to confirm any President Trump nominee this fall. Though he didn’t specify whether any vote would technically take place before or after the November midterm elections, any candidate for Senate will have to take a position on the nominee.
Democrats are expected to overwhelmingly oppose any of the 25 names that Trump has promised he’d choose from, and they’ll be under pressure from their base to pull out all stops to try and block a vote.
But the political incentives of the party as a whole are much different than the pressures facing the Democratic Senators up for re-election in red states.
In 2018, there are 10 Democrats seeking re-election in states that Trump carried in 2016. Of those, five races are viewed as “tossups” by Cook Political report: Sens. Bill Nelson of Florida, Joe Donnelly in Indiana, Claire McCaskill in Missouri, Heidi Heitkamp in North Dakota, and Joe Manchin in West Virginia.
The difficulty faced by red state Democrats is that even in a more conservative states, a substantial portion of their base is going to be fiercely anti-Trump, and opposed to any of his judicial nominees. At the same time, particularly in the very red states (Missouri, North Dakota, Indiana, and West Virginia) where Trump won big, it’s going to be really difficult to vote “no” on a qualified Supreme Court nominee.”

“It’s nice to know that, in these bitterly divided times, the American public can all come together on at least one important burning issue of the day. And that issue is how much we all mistrust the media. According to a poll commissioned by Axios and conducted by Survey Monkey, nearly three out of four Americans believe that news outlets knowingly run “fake news”:
“Note that the prospect that these outlets run “fake news” more than “rarely” gets a majority in every political demographic. There’s no doubt that the topline number is driven by Republicans, 92% of whom believe this, but so do 79% of independents — four out of every five. It even gets a majority among Democrats.
That’s why the headline at Axios might be an example of the phenomenon. Highlighting that “92% of Republicans think media intentionally reports fake news” ignores the broad consensus of the results. Both Jazz Shaw and Instapundit pointed this out earlier this morning, and it’s a valid complaint. Furthermore, it’s leading other news outlets to ignore the broader findings, too, which is another complaint that people have about editorial bias and manipulated news.
The question is, of course, which news outlets they have in mind. Half of the people in this survey say they fight fake news by “stick[ing] to news sources they trust.” That sounds an awful lot like remaining in one’s ideological bubble. For Democrats, Fox News will undoubtedly be their fake news bête noire, and for some independents it might be as well. Republicans probably have more outlets in mind but at least some of them are keying those responses by grounding themselves in Fox News. Around half in all demographics do some fact-checking through Google searches, but fewer in each demo do anything more than that. In other words, the apparent unity on “fake news” is an inch deep, even though it’s a mile wide.
Part of that inch, though, is a broad consensus that fake-news publishing is purposeful:
More than two-thirds (65%) say fake news is usually reported because “people have an agenda.”
Roughly one-third (30%) believe such information is shared due to laziness or “poor fact-checking.”
Hardly anyone (3%) thinks that fake news makes headlines by accident.”

“Backlash against the Red Hen restaurant in Lexington, Virginia got a little out of control, and a little gross, on Tuesday, culminating in one 51-year-old protester getting arrested after throwing “chicken poop” in the general direction of the Sarah Huckabee Sanders-persecuting restaurant.
The fallout from the decision of the Red Hen’s owner to ask Sanders to leave because she works for the Trump administration, and then allegedly helping to stir up a protest against Sanders mostly-liberal family afterward, continues.
The owner, Stephanie Wilkinson, has resigned from her role of director of a local non-profit group designed to promote businesses in the city as a result of the distraction she now presents. “Considering the events of the past weekend, Stephanie felt it best, that for the continued success of Main Street Lexington, she should step aside,” the president of the board said.
On Tuesday, Wilkinson’s restaurant, which has remained closed since the incident, was visited by a group of protesters who were outraged by the anti-Trumper bigotry. One of those protesters, a West Virginia man, is facing charges after allegedly throwing chicken poop at the restaurant.

Yesterday, I blogged that a Kremlin official announced the two sides came to an agreement after US national security adviser John Bolton met with Putin on Wednesday. Kremlin foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov told the media that Trump and Putin “would start with a one-on-one meeting between the presidents that could last several hours, and would focus on bilateral relations, Syria and arms-control issues.
Bolton explained why Trump needs to have this meeting with Putin. From NPR:
Bolton told reporters in Moscow the summit agenda would include a variety of issues, including arms control, but the meeting would not necessarily produce any specific agreements.
He acknowledged that any meeting with Putin is likely to generate some “political noise” in the U.S., where Trump has been dogged by a special counsel’s probe into Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election.
“A lot of people have said or implied over time that a meeting between President Trump and President Putin would somehow prove some nexus between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin, which is complete nonsense,” Bolton said. “The president recognizes there may be some criticism of this decision to have the meeting. You’ve heard some of it here today. But what must guide his conduct of American foreign policy is the pursuit of American national interests. And he judges — correctly in my view — that this bilateral summit between himself and President Putin is something he needs to do and will do, regardless of political criticism at home.””

For a while, before tax cuts and regulatory reform boosted the economy, before defense spending increased, before Jerusalem was recognized as Israel’s capital, and before a “maximum pressure” campaign led to a detente with North Korea, #NeverTrumpers were fond of mockingly summarizing Trump supporters’ arguments as “But Gorsuch.”
This bit of childish taunting always struck me as an unknowing admission of ignorance about the role assumed by the Supreme Court in modern American governance. Even when 21 appeals court judges took their seats — orchestrated by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his Republican colleagues — still the one-note pundits played on, only louder: President Trump was so awful and evil, and conservatives who supported him had done so for one lousy seat on the Supreme Court.
The implication from all the noise and a thousands posts was that “Gorsuch” wasn’t worth it. Now, after Justice Neil M. Gorsuch’s first year on the court, it will be impossible to overstate what his confirmation has meant.”

“Justice Anthony Kennedy’s retirement from the Supreme Court is going to have immediate political consequences by creating a headache for red state Senate Democrats seeking reelection.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said shortly following the retirement that he would hold a vote to confirm any President Trump nominee this fall. Though he didn’t specify whether any vote would technically take place before or after the November midterm elections, any candidate for Senate will have to take a position on the nominee.
Democrats are expected to overwhelmingly oppose any of the 25 names that Trump has promised he’d choose from, and they’ll be under pressure from their base to pull out all stops to try and block a vote.
But the political incentives of the party as a whole are much different than the pressures facing the Democratic Senators up for re-election in red states.
In 2018, there are 10 Democrats seeking re-election in states that Trump carried in 2016. Of those, five races are viewed as “tossups” by Cook Political report: Sens. Bill Nelson of Florida, Joe Donnelly in Indiana, Claire McCaskill in Missouri, Heidi Heitkamp in North Dakota, and Joe Manchin in West Virginia.
The difficulty faced by red state Democrats is that even in a more conservative states, a substantial portion of their base is going to be fiercely anti-Trump, and opposed to any of his judicial nominees. At the same time, particularly in the very red states (Missouri, North Dakota, Indiana, and West Virginia) where Trump won big, it’s going to be really difficult to vote “no” on a qualified Supreme Court nominee.”

And that issue is how much we all mistrust the media. According to a poll commissioned by Axios and conducted by Survey Monkey, nearly three out of four Americans believe that news outlets knowingly run “fake news”:
“Note that the prospect that these outlets run “fake news” more than “rarely” gets a majority in every political demographic. There’s no doubt that the topline number is driven by Republicans, 92% of whom believe this, but so do 79% of independents — four out of every five. It even gets a majority among Democrats.
That’s why the headline at Axios might be an example of the phenomenon. Highlighting that “92% of Republicans think media intentionally reports fake news” ignores the broad consensus of the results. Both Jazz Shaw and Instapundit pointed this out earlier this morning, and it’s a valid complaint. Furthermore, it’s leading other news outlets to ignore the broader findings, too, which is another complaint that people have about editorial bias and manipulated news.
The question is, of course, which news outlets they have in mind. Around half in all demographics do some fact-checking through Google searches, but fewer in each demo do anything more than that. In other words, the apparent unity on “fake news” is an inch deep, even though it’s a mile wide.
Part of that inch, though, is a broad consensus that fake-news publishing is purposeful:
More than two-thirds (65%) say fake news is usually reported because “people have an agenda.”
Roughly one-third (30%) believe such information is shared due to laziness or “poor fact-checking.”
Hardly anyone (3%) thinks that fake news makes headlines by accident.”

The owner, Stephanie Wilkinson, has resigned from her role of director of a local non-profit group designed to promote businesses in the city as a result of the distraction she now presents. “Considering the events of the past weekend, Stephanie felt it best, that for the continued success of Main Street Lexington, she should step aside,” the president of the board said.
On Tuesday, Wilkinson’s restaurant, which has remained closed since the incident, was visited by a group of protesters who were outraged by the anti-Trumper bigotry. One of those protesters, a West Virginia man, is facing charges after allegedly throwing chicken poop at the restaurant.

Not everyone is a Russia-phobe. As Pat Buchanan has pointed out, Americans voted FOR Trump’s improved relations with Russia. I guess he must be part of the Trump Cult…or maybe he’s not a member of any cult (including the cult of Reagan) but just a thinking man who knows that governments routinely interfere in each others elections and stability if they can.

My problem with all of this is, as Christians we should be taking the higher road. We need to view all people, no matter anything about them, as imago dei–made in the image of God and thus worthy of respect.
The owner of the restaurant in Lexington was foolish. I’m very sorry, however, that her foolishness is now making her a target. We need to let actions speak louder than words and yet be full of love–otherwise we’re a clanging cymbal in a world full of noise.

Allowing child victims of sexual abuse to testify away from the accused was quite controversial at the time it was enacted, due to the accused having the right to face his accuser. I’m not sure how they got around that.
Have you heard about that motorcycle gang that accompanies child victims to court? They sit in the courtroom, too, so that the child knows he is being protected by them. God bless them.
