  5. I just saw a weather map on FoxNews. It is 29 degrees in Raleigh. Colder than any other place in the US. It is 36 in NYC. It is currently 30 degrees in Greensboro.

  7. Why are people so stupid or callous as to tell a young woman who just announced she is pregnant about their third cousin twice removed’s sister-in-law who just had a miscarriage? My neighbor “child” just told us earlier this week that she is expecting a baby in November, I told her this would happen. Yesterday she told me about 3 or 4 people who have already called to tell her about other women’s miscarriages; one at 20 weeks. Do they really think she is interested?
    I also warned her that perfect strangers would touch her belly, talk to it, and deduct IQ points when they are speaking to her. 😉

  8. I am still up making a cake. My aide asked if I would make a cake for her daughter’s birthday. I think that she will be six. They do not have ovens or any way to make a cake. The cake is made, but I am tired and am delaying making the frosting.

    When Elvera was pregnant with Chuck, we were living in a trailer park belonging to Southwestern Seminary. All young couples. There was one old couple living there. About thirty. Others were young marrieds.
    About a third of them were pregnant. It just happened that the lady who lived beside us had her baby the same time Elvera had Chuck.
    The Fort Worth Star Telegram was going to have a story about two women with the same address had babies on the same day.
    But when they discovered that it was a trailer park, they didn’t run it.

The header photo is from our state park, a fox squirrel (the largest of our three varieties of squirrel, four if you count the black squirrel separately from the gray squirrel though it is the same species). It came down a tree and across the undergrowth, and I got a couple of photos. Then it went to this path of sunlight (it wasn’t very warm, 40s I think). In the sunlight it glowed, and it sat up to eat a nut it had found. I’m pretty sure it knew I was there (I was farther than it seems because of the zoom lens, but not terribly far from it), but it probably knew that humans are no match for a squirrel with ready access to trees, and that nut and that patch of sunlight in which to eat it were more inviting than the human was frightening. So it gave me a great shot while it cracked the nut. I also got a nice shot when its hands weren’t up to its face and it looked like it was sneering at me, but it isn’t as sharp in its focus.

  12. Morning! That snow pattern certainly is messed up this year…that is supposed to be our snow!! It was 67 degrees here yesterday and all but a smidge has melted!

    I have a fun story to do today, about a found class ring from 1969. Guy who found it is an atty who regularly uses metal detectors on the beach where he lives in Florida. After Hurricane Irma, all kinds of things were exposed, including this class ring from one of our local high schools. It’s in pristine condition, with the initials GT, and he really would like to get it back to its owner. The school was of little help to him so somehow he found and called us. I’m going to go through the 1969 school annual at the public library this morning looking for GT (he did find out there were 2 of them, one is deceased, but the school refused to give him the names).

    Looks like our rain is over and it was enough to help some of the wildflower seeds I scattered several weeks ago to take root. It’s the poor woman’s landscaping plan. Now I need to talk to the gardner on Monday to make sure he doesn’t whack them all out, thinking they’re weeds.

  19. For the record, I have packed about 90 books of boxes. I am a little more than half finished–anyone want to come help with the rest? I’m running out of motivation.

    If anyone is planning a move soon, especially anyone with a lot of books, liquor stores have excellent boxes. They come with removable inserts, so they should be good for packing glasses as well. But they are the right size for books (and they vary in size and shape enough that you can choose which one best fits a particular stack of books), and of course they are made to be strong so they don’t break in shipping. But they also aren’t made too large, so they should be liftable.

    We had copy-paper boxes and other boxes, but not enough of them. Three trips to liquor stores netted us a few dozen more, and of a better size, enough to keep me going for a while longer, though I still may run out.

    I was wondering how one packs 7,000 books! I don’t envy you. Moves for me always started out very neatly organized and wound up with garbage bag hauls as my motivation and energy levels (and time left before the drop-dead deadline) rapidly waned.

    I remember hitting the markets for boxes, too, they do seemed to have the best and most moveable sizes.

  25. It has been a while since I have mentioned public school. Son has an online course he has to take in school as part of the metalworking apprenticeship deal he is in. He was not getting any done the first couple weeks though he has fifty minutes of designated classtime each day to do it and a teacher looking over his shoulder to keep him on track. Turns out he was too busy talking with the four or five other boys in the class to have time to do the work. With a teacher watching to keep him on track. The principal stepped in and reminded the teacher of son’s challenges and the past week went much better, However, now son knows how to do autofill for his answers. He can just guess at the first numeral until he gets it right and the computer does the rest. He says it is almost as slow as doing the work himself. I wonder how many other children are using that feature to do their assignments and I wonder why it is part of the system.

  26. I have no idea why anyone would tell someone about miscarriages when they know that someone is pregnant. It is beyond me. Kind of like the cancer horror stories some like to share to cancer patients.

    I did have second thoughts about recently talking about the diabetics I know who lost feet, legs, sight and one (I transported to ER in a coma) who lost his life to the disease. The stimulus of this conversation was the diabetic woman heaping extra icing onto her piece of cake, while telling us she will have to up her meds shot later. She is older than me and Type 1. She is also a nurse, but there were others around, who are also diabetic or on the edge.

  29. I am hoping it is a glitch in the system and once drawn to their attention, they will fix it. They have been good about trying though many of the teachers still do not seem to understand the misuse of computers and other devices in the classrooms.

    Son, after all, only uses one earbud while the teacher is talking so he can hear the teacher and the music he has downloaded, probably illegally on the school computer.

  31. Kathaleena, I had a co-worker once who was diabetic, not on insulin, who didn’t check her sugar regularly. I think she took pills or something for it, but she was extremely nonchalant about it. A group of us women ate lunch together daily, and I would see her eat dessert with lunch and then eat cake two hours later if someone was celebrating a birthday. In fact, one day I was in a conference room full of people, and one big slice of cake was offered to numerous people, who all turned it down since it was so huge. (This lady was talking and didn’t see it turned down repeatedly.) When it was offered to the diabetic, she took it. I wanted to shake her and yell in her ear. Having diabetes isn’t like having acne, which you can choose to ignore.

  34. DJ, our Siamese cats are passionate about butter and will fight you tooth-and-nail to get at it. During my outing with siblings at Christmas, I bought a beautiful handmade ceramic butter dish from the Annapolis Pottery. Last Friday, I returned from an errand to find it on the floor, broken, and licked clean.

    And a funny story – the peeps were down for dinner the other night. Son noticed a strange pattern in the butter and asked if the cats had licked it. Hubby said, “No, I did that” to which granddaughter said, “YOU licked it??”

  39. There’s a lot to diabetes that’s in the head–and it is emotionally depleting, particularly in group settings. Sometimes you just get tired of it all and don’t care anymore because it feels too hard.

    I knew it was the rabbit. Isn’t it always a rabbit when there’s pregnancy involved? 🙂

  40. So now our community is roiled by the news the Fountaingrove water system is compromised from benzene following the October events. This water system is 1.5 miles west of our home and apparently during the fires, the system collapsed and fire debris–which included melting plastic pipe–ended up in one of the empty-at-the-time water tanks on top of the hills.

    Somehow, that has managed to contaminate the entire system, at an estimated rebuilding cost of $43 million dollars that our city does not have. These are the very expensive homes with views where doctors, lawyers, officials and wealthy people lived.

    We have a 98% occupancy rate before October. We have no housing open anywhere at the county with 5200 families needing homes–or less since many have given up and moved away, including a number of our friends.

    Medium cost of a home today, which has been screaming up of course, is $689K.

    People who lost their homes only have 17 months left of insurance-paid housing.

    I don’t know what’s going to happen. It just gets worse and worse. 😦

  41. The butter was in a big plastic tub I bought at the supermarket. Spreadable. Part of the container also was chewed open when i picked it up in the backyard. The lid was several feet away. Meanwhile, I found the strangest thing in the yard last night, it was a stick but looked like a big, twisted snake with 2 ears and an open mouth. Maybe it’s a fossil.

    The winds are crazy here today and there is a fire just west of I25…now it would have to travel a bit to get to us but….well…like I said these winds are not good. Praying for those living close to danger. Husband just got back from Denver and said the smoke was thick at the interstate and it stung the lungs…

  49. What can I say, the border collie prefers to eat in the backyard. I have found the cat’s (cute) dishes, sometimes broken, shredded ziplock bags, and empty containers of all kinds of things out there where Tess prefers to lie and chew (she has her preferred ‘spot’ and Cowboy has his spot on the other side of the yard). Once I found half a (big) bag of the cat’s dry food, emptied out and shredded, in the backyard. I still can’t figure out how they hauled that out the doggie door.

  55. So let’s see what’s new here…

    We have siding on our house again (repairs from last summer’s hail damage, which we weren’t aware of until we noticed all the neighbors getting their roofs redone, and our insurance adjuster told us no, the roof was undamaged, but the siding was). It’s so clean (I hadn’t realized how dirty the old siding was), it makes the windows look awful where the paint is flaking away or dirty. The contractor is going to repaint the shutters (I thought of suggesting we could do it ourselves but he’ll probably do a much better job), but I’m not sure about the windows themselves.

    Union is still negotiating with the administration, but they’re also organizing a strike committee and strike captains in case we strike. 😦

    They’re saying we might get up to 8 inches snow tomorrow. With sleet mixed in. 😦

    Older son is coming home this weekend and staying through Thursday (no school this coming week). So he’ll be home for his birthday on Tuesday, though we’ll need to celebrate it mostly a different day because I have rehearsal Tuesday for a concert in a few weeks, and Haydn’s Creation is not so easy that I can skip another one (I missed one for younger son’s concert, another when I was sick and coughing all the time).

    Younger son has his Eagle project planned, finally, is starting to make contacts with other local troops to request help. I told him I could get him to those other troop meetings, didn’t think to ask him not to plan one on Tuesday evening – but older brother should be able to help there.

  61. On top of clients all day, we had the visiting phone guys. I think that got the phones working better, but then we lost all power and had to leave around 8 p.m. tonight because tax returns can not be prepared in the dark. And the phone system is dependent on power. Maybe tomorrow will be better. I have been awake since about 3:30 a.m. I am fading fast.

  66. Gotta watch those Spanish teachers. They have a way of sneaking links into greetings. And if you notice, the comics links are usually imbedded into a phrase of some sort. It’s a little html trick I learned on here or the WorldMagBlog years ago. The link is the text that is a different color than the rest of the text.

    But no, I didn’t run off on Spring break. That’s next weekend for me. We get only a 5 day weekend, Thursday – Monday.
